Wifi Stops Working Periodically

I just got this Macbook Pro a few weeks ago, and lately its connection speed has been very sluggish if there at all. Airport will still show a strong connection, but I can't view any webpages. I was able to be logged into Adium, but not browse the internet, and then all of a sudden, I couldn't find any networks available. Mind you, I live in an apartment, and there are around 7 networks in my area, but when I scanned for networks, there were none.
The only thing that has helped the problem so far is restarting my computer, but I'm still worried my connection will drop again. The past few hours my wifi has been working on and off, I even had to move to get to the ethernet cable in order to get a stable connection.
I've seen a lot of problems with wifis on MBPs and I'm wondering if others are experiencing what I am, and whether I should just take my mac up to the apple store to have them replace the wifi card.

Folks: *there may be a power/signal issue going on here.* I had a similar problem of my network connection dragging to practically nothing when hooking up my LaCie external drive to the USB port. Please see my post below (link and text)
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9914924#9914924
Folks:
Apple needs to get on this issue fast; after turning off my N mode on my WRT160N Linksys Router, I got my packet speed back up to where it should be... HOWEVER I noticed another problem.
When I hooked up my LaCie external drive (connected via USB), my packets on PING practically stall to nothing. I then eject the external USB drive and re-ping and I get acceptable packet speeds; I re-connect the LaCie external drive to the USB port and my PING crawls to nothing.
There is CLEARLY a correlation between the network speed crawling to nothing while hooking up an external drive; possibly a power sink and/or signal interference on the Airport when hooking up a USB device? (or perhaps even Firewire 800 too?)
I sure hope Apple is reading this one, because this could be a MAJOR issue that needs to be fixed ASAP.

  • I am having problems with my optical corded mouse that came with my iMac (it's about 2 years old) It stops working periodically, and I can't figure out how to fix it; doesn't look like I can open it to clean it, or anything like that.

My corded optical mouse (model A 1152),which came with my desktop  iMac, stops working periodically.  The little tracball may work scrolling down a page, but not up, sometimes, and I have yet to figure out how to fix it, or why it happens at all.  Is there someone who has had that problem, and what did you do?

    Hello:
Turn the mouse upside down and run it (vigorously) over a piece of paper.  Better yet, run it over a microfiber cloth.

Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
Try right next to the router
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

    Could it be this?
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem. A trick that works frequently with iPhones:
Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
    Power up
Settings > AirPlane Mode OFF, Do Not Disturb OFF
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.

Thanks for the quick response. What you have said makes sense but there is no rhyme or reason to he data used. I reset my cellular data counter to zero so both sent and received read zero. I was connected to wifi and let the phone to go into sleep mode. I waited about ten minutes and sent myself the same email four times, each with a 750 kb attachment. It was sent to my .me address so it was push mail on my phone. Sure enough I checked a minute later while bringing the phone out of sleep mode and checked the data. It showed just 10kb sent but 1mb received which just doesn't tally with the 4 x 750kb mails received. It just isn't making sense.
He knows what you asked and has already answered it!
I thought I had read where the iOS4 (or maybe just the iPhone 4) was supposed to be able to keep wifi connections alive while inactive. If the phone is sitting there on a charger with a wifi connection available, why use the 3G?

    Hi Gunjan,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like you've already tried a few troubleshooting steps, but these links may offer some additional tips:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1398
If you are using a public or commercial network that requires a login or subscription, see this article for more information.
Verify that you are selecting the correct network if you are in a location with multiple Wi-Fi networks.
Verify that the Wi-Fi network settings are correct. You can view and configure Wi-Fi settings using the following steps:
    Tap Settings > Wi-Fi.
Locate the Wi-Fi network you are currently using and tap .
If you've verified that your settings are correct and the issue persists, try the following:
Tap "Forget this Network" to reset settings for this Wi-Fi network, including the password. Then try connecting to the network again.
Note: This can be useful if you identify a network issue and want to prevent the device from automatically using this network in the future.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings, including passwords, VPN, and APN settings.
Note: If the Wi-Fi network uses MAC address filtering, you will need to add the MAC address to the access list for the Wi-Fi router. The MAC address for your device is listed as the Wi-Fi address in Settings > General > About.
If this issue persists with multiple wireless networks, see our general iPhone Troubleshooting Assistant for more steps you can try:

  • Wifi stops working when NTP sync occurs

Every few days I have a problem where the WiFi stops working on my time capsule running v7.6.3.  All of the cleints in the house (Mac Mini, two Macbook Pros, iPad, two iPhones) stop simultanously and don't see the wifi network at all.
At that point I get an Ethernet cable and check out the logs.  Frequently I see a message similar to the following:
    Nov 29 18:21:13
    Severity:5
Clock synchronized to network time server time.apple.com (adjusted +810754969 seconds).
    Nov 29 15:21:12
    Severity:5
Clock synchronized to network time server time.apple.com (adjusted +811604500 seconds).
There are plenty of log entries where NTP sync is successful.  I have an Airport Express running 7.6.3 that uses time.apple.com and this is never a problem, only on my time capsule.
I've performed a factory reset twice and it doesn't help.  Today I've switched the NTP server to 'us.pool.ntp.org' to see what happens.  I also notice that when I power cycle it, the time reverts to January (year unknown) until a sync occurs.
Has anyone else ever seen this?  I have an OG 1st gen Time Capusle.

No its new to me bcoz no matter u move latop anywhere up,down, tilt anything shouldnt happen at all,i move mine all directions without loss if this continue to u better go to apple to test sound like interfering inside no idea of this,u cant keep doin restart all the time....its not right........

    Hello,
My macbook pro wifi stop working suddenly, and know appears a X on the wifi icon, what may have happened?
Its seems to be the harware.

    Hello raphaelitajuba,
The article linked below provides information regarding this indicator and steps that can help restore functionality to your MacBook Pro's Wi-Fi.
AirPort has detected a problem with the driver or a necessary sub-system component, apply the latest manual AirPort software update or reinstall Mac OS X. If reinstalling Mac OS X does not correct the problem, take your computer to an authorized Apple service center.

  • WIFI stopped working after I woke the computer up, now says connected to the network but not the internet, all other coputers and devices connected still with no problems, have pinged IP address from router and got the message "4 packets sent none receive

    Hi,
WIFI stopped working after I woke the computer up, now says connected to the network but not the internet, all other coputers and devices connected still with no problems, have pinged IP address from router and got the message "4 packets sent none received"... Help
I have tried network diagnostics which doesnt help... The only other ting is, when I woke the computer up it said tat another device was using my IP... My wife had plugged her phone into the computer to charge etc but even when i turn wifi off on the phone there is no change... also in settings on the phone the IP address is different...

The answer to your question is - neither!
Your PC should to configured to obtain an IP address automatically, and to obtain DNS server IP addresses automatically, from the Airport Express. This is the way Windows (and Macs for that matter) are configued by default, and that is the way most people have their computers set up. If you manually configured your PC's IP address to be the same as your wife's Mac, it certainly explains why your PC is not able to access the internet.

  • Ipod touch wifi stopped working

can somebody please help me.. on my ipod touch 2nd gen software version 2.2 the latest one i have used wifi before and it is simply brilliant.. however today i come home from dinner and i play some games i am chilling with my ipod then i decide to do some web surfing but oh no! safari is telling me no internet connection even though i have full wifi bars next to where it says ipod! what is this?? how can i fix it?? i have turned off my ipod turned it back on reset my settings turned it off some more reset it some more and nothing seems to work!
this is useless without the wonderful internet!
    please help

  • Wifi stopped working suddenly

wifi stopped working suddenly? and will not turn on in system preferances
Under the Advanced     wi-fi Address: 00:00:00:00:00:00
Just clicked on the wi-fi symbol on top bar (sorry do not know name of bar, if some else dose?)  and it states that No Hardware installed
    Any help please.

I can add my macbook pro to the list of 'wifi: no hardware installed' victims.
At the London Regent Street Store yesterday (after an hour's wait beyond appointment time) the Genius test said it was a hardware fault and the airport card must be faulty/dead. However, when I got home I turned the mbp on and, as if by magic, wifi was working normally. About 3 hours later it failed.  I switched off overnight. It's been dead most of the day so I did a complete clean up using Onyx, restarted and, yes, you guessed it, wifi was back.
I guess it could be a faulty airport card but it seemsthere are an awful lot of airport cards failing all at the same time! Coincidence or a software glitch post 10.7.2? Various forums now seem to have plenty of entries from mac owners with this same problem.
How do we get an official response from Apple on this? In my experience Apple are fantastic at addressing this kind of issue once they know. How can we ensure they are aware?

    Hi s.kouris,
I'm afraid that unless you are able to contact the previous owner and have him wipe the device, or provide you with his Apple ID password so you can delete the iCloud account, you are out of luck.
With iOS 7, an Activiation Lock was added to deter thieves. This lock prevents anyone but the owner of the device from deleting the iCloud account and restoring the device:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5818
Unless you are able to reach the original owner and get the device wiped or the iCloud account deleted, you are stuck with a brick.

What do I do when WiFi stops working?

Have you done a reset on the device?  Hold down the home button + the lock button for about 10-20 seconds until the white Apple logo appears.  Once the phone resets, see if this helps.
If not, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings and see if that helps.

  • When I connect my External HD my WiFi stops working.

When I connect my External HD my WiFi stops working. Anyone knows why?????

I do have the same problem with my MBP 15" (late 2013) on the right USB-Port as well. It still works when I use the left one.
As the external hard drive has its own power source I suggest it doesn't have anything to do with the difference regarding the provided power of the right and left side...(?)
    Is this problem solved yet?
