Wifi sync - does sync, doesn't backup

Hi all -
I'm wondering if this happens for everyone:
I backup to iTunes and not to iCloud. When I connect the iPhone with the cable, and press sync, then iTunes does backup the iPhone. However, when the iPhone syncs wirelessly with iTunes (either by pressing "sync now" on the iPhone or by pressing "sync" in iTunes), it syncs content, but it does not backup.
I thought that maybe you can't backup over wifi, but that's not so, because if you right-click the iPhone in iTunes you can select backup even when it's connected via Wifi. It just doesn't do a backup when you do a Wifi sync.
This is very annoying, because automatic syncs which take place over Wifi, will not backup the iPhone. So if you choose not to use iCloud, there is no way to get automatic backups.
What's going on?

Seems like this will affect everyone. See this article:

When I try to sync my iPod iCal with my MBP (OS 10.7) iCal via iTunes and WiFi I get a message saying "Safari Downloading Safe Browsing Data" but I am connected to a local network and thus the syncing does not complete because the downloading never completes because I am not connected to the internet.
Why does syncing iCal need Safari Safe Browsing Data? How can I turn this off?

See:

"Safari Downloading Safe Browsing Data" is just some data that is synce with the computer. To turn off on the Mac go to System Preferencs>iCloud and turn off Safari

• Z22 doesn't sync calendar with Outlook, does sync other data

Trying to sync Z22 with Outlook Office 2007. It does sync tasks, contacts and notes, but not calendar. I also tried exporting calendar to a .dba file, but Outlook doesn't recognize a .dba file as importable.

I have exactly the same problem, and it is a big issue for me as well. Possibly more so as I had suggested that the whole company move over to the 6300.
The problem is definitely with the recurrence of type 3rd Thursday of every month Etc. I get the appointment, on the same date as the original "seed" appointment in outlook wiht the time replaced with 00:00 to 24:00. Sadly this has made this phone unusable and I have had to revert to my old Nokia 6230i which does not have this problem.
I am using Outlook 2007 6300 Firmware 5.5 and PC Suite version 6.85.12.0. I only sync one way from outlook to the phone.
Sadly this could be fixed quite easily if appointments of this sort were converted by PC Suite into "one off" type appointments.
I would really like a solution to this ASAP please.

Try rebooting your computer and reset the iPad. Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button continuously until the Apple logo appears. Then release the button and let the device restart. You will not lose data doing this. It's like a computer reboot.

The TC is a wireless router.. it must plug into the internet by ethernet.. you cannot sync to wireless.

Trust me when I say this coming from 20 years of experience.
Get a powered external drive, format it 1 Partition Option: GUID and OS X Extended Journed as the format in Disk Utility.
Download and install Carbon Copy Cloner, clone internal drive to external drive.
Set a schedule to remind you to do it at least once a week, keep it near your charger.
When you plug your charger in, do plug the clone and power the machine up, set the display to sleep only,
CCC will do the rest.
If you want to boot from it, hold the option/alt and select it Startup Manager.
I've seen many TimeMachine and TimeCapsule nightmares and so far haven't seen a problem from anyone using a bootable clone.
It's simple, it's easy, it's more reliable and more powerful than what Apple does and it only takes plugging in a extra cable.
Make as many clones as you want, keep them time seperated, off site etc. etc.
Cables don't have network issues, clones can be verified in seconds merely by booting from them.
Clones protect your productivity, your up in seconds on a clone despite even the hard drive dying.
Software problem? No sweat, boot of the clone and reverse clone your problems away.
If you want to fuss and muss with half implemented TimeMachine and TimeCapsule network headaches then prepare to suffer.
I don't like to suffer, I bought a Mac not to suffer, but it appears you do with TimeMachine and TimeCapsule.

• Wifi and USB sync doesnt work with iTunes 12

Mac Pro running Mavericks
iTunes 12.0.1.26
iOS 8.1.1 iPhone 6 plus
(other ipads iOS 7, etc etc)
wifi and USB sync doesn't work for my iPhone running iOS 8.1.1. The device doesn't even show up listed anywhere in iTunes! iPhoto does show the device
and I've been able to save off photos from my phone.
I will point out that when connected via USB cable my phone does display a pop up asking if it should trust the computer it is connected to. I, of course, answer yes.
Likewise other iOS devices in the house (3 ipads) running iOS 7 and iOS 8. Non sync at all via wifi.

i've emailed them but there's no update required.
iTunes is the problem
iTunes might be the problem but doubtful Apple will change it to "fix" VL plugin.
And VL is looking at the problem.

• New PC + iPhone sync - does that have to mean I lose my app data?

Hello all,
I've got a new PC and I've transferred my purchases & copied my library to it (from my old PC). When I try to sync my iPhone, it says it's going to erase all of the old content. With apps, does that mean I lose all of the data (game progress, Camera+ pictures, etc)?
Can I copy over my iPhone backups from the old PC and avoid this scenario?
Cheers,
Brent

Hello Eric,
Thanks for the link - I'm already good for the music, it's the apps I'm concerned about.
For example, I've made a ton of progress in Jetpack Joyride - am I going to lose all of that progress (10hrs+ of gameplay) when I sync up?
Alternatively, in Camera+ I've got about 95 pictures that are in various states of editing. I'd rather not have to finish the edits on all of them before syncing up
It doesn't seem to make sense that I have to blow these apps away when I've transferred purchases & copied libraries to the new computer.
Cheers,
Brent

• Sync does not sync my passwords - EVER

i started using sync now since foxmarks went down and have a few observations:
bookmarks sync - that feature is very, very slow. sync happens in minutes and sometimes not complete and I have to manual start sync numerous times until everything has been syncd
passwords sync - does not happen, EVER, none of my passwords are syncd.
that addon is not very good, I can't even make backups or see the contents of my sync folder online. There should be a way to save all your data so you can import it when you reinstall. having to rely on a slow and buggy sync is not good.

1. Xmarks replaced Foxmarks a few years ago, when they added other browsers beyond Firefox to their service. Xmarks hasn't shut down yet, that was planned for early January 2011. That may not even happen - UPDATE: Xmarks Sync NOT Dead Yet - http://www.xmarks.com/about/shutdown
2. In Sync preferences there are 5 items to select for what type of data is sync'd. '''Firefox will: Sync everything''' is the default setting. Any chance you changed a setting there?
3. "not very good" - in your opinion. Sync wasn't created to mimic other services, like Xmarks. The developers included the features that they think are important and are trying to keep it uncomplicated as they can. Being able to view your data on the Sync server would have greatly complicated the encryption of your data and the retrieval of that data from the server. Unlike Xmarks, your Firefox Sync data is encrypted as it leaves your PC and then unencrypted when it is downloaded to Firefox or Firefox Home on another device. Your "Sync Key" is only good in Firefox, so your data can only be read in Firefox - no one else has access to your data in an unencrypted format.
4. To recover your data from the Sync server, you either install the Sync extension on Firefox 3.6 or install Firefox 4 which includes Sync (once it is released) and you setup your account information on the new installation. You then sync the new installation with the data that is on the server.
5. As far as speed of the sync goes, while the initial sync might take 30 to 45 minutes, subsequent syncing is done very quickly depending upon the differences in your data between the device and the server.

• Does syncing to iTunes automatically update the iPad 2? Or is there another procedure to updating the iPad 2?

Hi,
I very recently bought an iPad 2 for my wife. She tried to do some online shopping and couldn't get past the checkout screen. Poor girl tried all day and was so frustrated when I came home. I told her to use my PC laptop and she was done in minutes. I went to the local Apple Store and their advice was to disconnect and reconnect the iPad WIFI connection. And to update the iPad. I sync'd to iTunes and couldn't figure out how to search for updates. Does syncing automatically do the updating?
Thanks

No - to update the operating system (iOS) on the iPad connect it your computer's iTunes, and in iTunes select the Device on the left-hand side, and on the summary tab click 'Check for Updates'. The current version is 4.3.3 - you can tell which version your iPad has by looking at the Version field in Settings > General > About on the iPad (the bit in brackets is just the build number of the iOS release); the iPad's current iOS version is also shown on the summary tab mentioned above. If you do not currently have the most up-to-date version then the download is just under 600 meg, and therefore may take a while to download.

• In the Apple world, why does 'Sync' mean 'Erase' ??

I have some photos on my iPod, and a few applications. When I try to 'Sync' at work, iTunes 8.0.1 tells me that it will erase the content on the iPod and 'Sync' it to the current iTunes library, which does not contain any photos or apps.
Why does 'Sync' mean 'Erase' and is there a way around this?
I'm fine not syncing the photos, but I want to be able to add applications to the iPod from my work machine, and dragging the app icon from the iTunes Library to the iPod does not work.
Work computer is authorized...

Sync means sync. But it's a one-way sync, not two-way. That is, iTunes will, if it's set to automatic, sync your library to your iPod making it identical to the content on your computer. By demand of the content owners, way back when the iPods first came out (who by some ludicrous logic feared that it would promote piracy if it was easy to get tracks back off an iPod), though, the reverse isn't the case; iTunes will not sync your iPod back to your library on your computer (except for content purchased from the iTunes Store and for that there's a command; it doesn't happen automatically).
If you want to connect your iPod to more than one computer's iTunes library, set things up for manual control:
Managing content manually on iPod

• Sync does not work- multiple desktop FF

Sync does not allow adding more than one DESKTOP FF in order to sync multiple desktop FF (e.g: work, home, & friends , etc..)
I do not like to use an add-on.

Sync doesn't care about the type of device (desktop vs laptop vs phone) when trying to add a new device to a Sync account. Please explain what you want to do with Sync with a little more detail.

• What does sync mean?

Anytime I plug my iphone on my MacBook Pro, it prompts me to few things I would like to understand for full usage of my iphone. Can anyone help me with please?
what does sync mean?
How can I backup contact data in my iphone on the computer to secure
How can I secure against theft?

How you delete content from your iPod depends how you have it set to update:
If you are updating automatically then delete the files from the iTunes library and next time you connect they will automatically be deleted from your iPod. Highlight the file and press the delete key on your keyboard, or right click and choose either Clear or Delete, depending on which version of iTunes you are using.
If you are updating manually, connect your iPod and click on the icon when it shows in the iTunes 7 source list click on the chevron > to the left of the iPod icon This will display the various icons for the iPod itself, Music, Movies, TV Shows and Playlists. Click on Music and you'll see the traditional song view. Find the files on your iPod that you want to remove, highlight them and delete directly.
To select multiple items such as all the songs in an album, click on the first track in the list hold down the shift key and click on the last track to highlight the selection. Then press the delete key.
To summarise, you start by highlighting the song/video/selection in either the iTunes library or on the iPod song list as displayed in iTunes then press the delete key on your keyboard: Deleting songs or playlists from your iPod

Try to reset the iPod by pressing the home and sleep button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose data doing a reset, but it can clear some glitches after installing new software or apps.

• I recently lost all of my contacts on my iPod touch 4g. If I sync my iPod with my backups on my PC,will the contacts come back or will they be deleted also?

I recently lost all of my contacts on my iPod touch 4g. If I sync my iPod with my backups on my PC, will the contacts come back to my iPod or will the sync delete the contacts from my backup file?

The contacts are part of the backup. So restoring from a backup that has the contacts should have the contacts. Make sure that you have autosyncing turned off, otherwise when you connect the iPod to the computer iTunes may overwrite the old backup with the new contents of the iPod that does not contain the contacts. To turn off go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and check the box that says Prevent iPods...
