WiFi & VPN to AppleTV without access to Ethernet?

Here's my set up.
I plan to rent a duplex in a foreign country where I share a wireless connection with the landlord. I do not have access to ethernet, only the WiFi connection.
I have a MacBook Pro and an AppleTV 3. I would like to be able to establish a VPN connection to my AppleTV with only access to WiFi.
Is this possible with a MacBook, or are there other WiFi (no ethernet) devices that can assist with this? I've heard of some people using WiFi USB sticks?

How will we see a difference? How will higher network speeds help the AppleTV performance? AppleTV uses UDP data streams which are fixed and slow, relative to Ethernet and 802.11ac wi-fi.
Not according to this article:  Apple TV: TCP and UDP ports and protocols used - Apple Support
....and good thing too; UDP is best confined to live audio/video streaming and VoIP.
Also the relative performance of TCP and UDP depends entirely on the kind of traffic you're sending, e.g. lots of small files, or fewer big files.  For tiny files, UDP has the edge, but for larger files TCP wins out (that's a gross generalisation though).

  • If I connect a time capsule via ethernet to an existing internet connection and use it to create a private wifi network for my wireless devices, will other users on the primary network (not the private wifi one) be able to access my files on my TCapsule?

Like it says in the title basically.
I want to use a time capsule to store my files and backups and access it from my phone and MacBook Air. However I do not want the others in my house who are currently connected to the same wifi/ethernet router to use my connection or my TC hard drives.
I had also been thinking about wirelessly extending the wifi network (a linksys N router) but I guess that will allow everyone to access my Time Capsule?
I hope you guys can help me.

No, if you have not provided them with the Time Capsule device password.
Users will be able to "see" the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading in the Finder on their Macs, but they will not be able to access the drive or the files.

  • How to AppleTV without internet?

I'm looking into buying an Apple TV for the wireless connection to my iPhone 4S to stream videos, games, etc.
But now I'm curious about all the downloaded videos I have on iTunes library that I would like to have at home.
Here's the kicker- no internet at home, only at work. So I usually download during the day, sync my phone and watch when I get home. But of course, I run out of room to keep everything I want even with 160GB iPhone (mostly music).
So here's the question: Is there a way  to move purchased movies from my computer at work to my Apple TV at home AND be able to do all the fun stuff like wirelessly play games on big screen from iPhone?

    AppleTV has no storage.
Unfortunately current models need internet to play protected iTunes content as internet authorisation of playback is needed.
If you have a computer at home you could transfer your downloads from the work machine to the home computer iTunes library.  You could then use Home Sharing for AppleTV to access the computer iTunes library.  You would then need a local network connection between AppleTV and computer plus internet access for AppleTV.
Potentially if your iPhone has internet you might be able to enable a wifi hotspot (or share internet via USB) for the computer, and either allow AppleTV to connect to iPhone too via wifi or share the computer internet (from iphone) over ethernet to AppleTV.  This should work in theory and provided playback is via AppleTV Computers icon the media should just play opver the LAN not the internet, but with iPhone internet used to very briefly authorise the playback.
While it should work I can't guarantee it, and there has also been a post where someone used their iPhone internet allowance quickly using Home Sharing even though such dats should be local not traversing the internet.
In all honesty, I would be wary without a router and decent internet.

    3. Microsoft router MN-500:
Tried this old router (the one I used before purchasing the LinkSys). It is an old (circa 2002) Wireless B base station with WEP Security. The iPhone was never able to connect to the Internet using various settings, many of which were duplicates of the LinkSys tests above.
On both routers my wife's Dell laptop and my HP printer connect without incident, using the same network/security settings.
I have always been able to connect to various unsecured WiFi networks; I have never been able to connect to a secure WiFi network (although the only one I've really tried has been my own).
I am at a loss as to what to do next. Any suggestions?

    SUCCESS!!!!!
I visited my brother-in-law yesterday and attempted to connect with his secure network. By sheer luck, he is using the exact same model LinkSys router. My iPhone connected first time--so the iPhone was eliminated as a source of the problem.
I didn't do a lot of troubleshooting at his house, but I did notice that his network was set for both dynamic DHCP and dynamic DNS. I know that either or both of Windstream (my ISP) and my broadband modem requires a pair of static DNS addresses.
Sure enough, delving real deep into Windstream's support site, I discovered a LinkSys router DNS help page, specifying how to set static DNS addresses in LinkSys routers. I then accessed my router, enterd the known static addresses, saved the router settings, then rebooted the iPhone and connected to the network.
    SUCCESS!!!
Thanks to Jane, who suggested it was an ISP issue, Jason, and all at Apple support. dumonj, I'll email you directly. Try this suggestion and see if it helps.

  • Using ipad2 and airplay with appleTV; can I have the ipad2 on wifi and the AppleTV on a wired port of the same router in order to use airplay?

can I have the ipad2 on wifi and the AppleTV on a wired port of the same router in order to use airplay?

I belive you can, I think my friends Apple TV is connected to their internet via an Ethernet cable, and we use Airplay sometimes using our iPads that are connected to the same network via WiFi. It should work as long as they are both connected to the same network. However, I don't have an Apple TV of my own, so don't take this as a solid answer.

  • BT WIFI VPN Client

Anyone know why I can't download the BT WiFI VPN client?
I first tried downloading it in may and when I click the link for windows 7 64bit I get the web page not available error.
I've tried every now and then since then and it still gives the same error.
I even tried downloading the win7 32bit and still get the same error.
It seems odd that the download link hasn't worked for 3 months and BT haven't even noticed.

    Hi,
Did you log into BTWifi? If you did then I would try just connecting to the hotspot without logging in.
    1) Find a BTWifi Hotspot
    2) Connect to it
    3) DO Not LOG IN
    4) Go to this link http://www.btwifi.co.uk/help/security/vpn-software.jsp
It should then try to download it without going to the "Your Connected Page"
    Hope That Helps.

  • Can I save my videos of iTunes in TimeCapsule to watch it in AppleTV without my MacBook? Thanks

I have an AppleTV and I want to buy TimeCapsule 2TB or 3TB. But I have this question: Can I save my videos of iTunes in TimeCapsule to watch it in AppleTV without my MacBook? Thanks

You can change the location of your iTunes Media folder from your MacBook HD to your Time Capsule. This will work, but only if your iTunes library is open Apple TV can access your content over Home Sharing. Apple TV cannot play the videos stored on your Time Capsule without iTunes.
iTunes Match does what you want, only with music: Apple TV streams the song from iCloud without iTunes. Unfortunately videos and movies aren't part of the iCloud service.

  • Using the newest AppleTV without owning a computer?

    Hello,
On the current AppleTV, can you stream the TV shows you own without your using your computer?
Can you own an AppleTV and access all your purchases if you no longer own any computer?
    Regards

Music can't be purchases at all???
It can't be purchased from the TV. If you have another device you can purchase it on, you can stream it to the Apple TV using AirPlay. Alternatively if you subscribe to iTunes match (computer/iTunes required, even though it may not be connected to the Apple TV) you can stream your entire iTunes music library without your computer being connected.
So if I buy a movie on the new AppleTV, can I not watch it whenever I like?
You can only buy movies on the Apple TV in the US, if you are in the US, you can redownload your purchases whenever you want.
The AppleTV only streams now doesn't it?
    Yes
Is AppleTV not "computer-free" like iPads and iPhones?
I wouldn't say the iPad/iPhone was entirely computer free just yet, the Apple TV can function without a computer, but like the iPhone/iPad it needs the computer for some things, just more things than the iPad/iPhone does.

  • I have an apple id for my itunes and want my wife to be able to access it on her ipad but not sure how when her id is different?

You can use one account with iTunes on your Mac, and different account(s) with the Mac App Store (for buying/downloads apps or OS updates for your Mac), iCloud (System Preferences > iCloud) and Messages (Messages > Preferences, or command-comma)

  • How can I get my old iTunes music onto my new computer without access to my old computer? I left my previous job and forgot to transfer my music. I bought iTunes match and it shows my old Mac as a device, but I cannot get the music off it.

How can I get my old iTunes music onto my new computer without access to my old computer? I left my previous job and forgot to transfer my music. I bought iTunes match and it shows my old Mac as a device, but I cannot access any of the old music. All I can find are what was on my iPhone, but that's not what I want. I need all my old music from my old Mac, which has been wiped clean by IT at my old job. BUT, I did have iCloud at that time and I thought all my music would be accessible through it. I don't understand the Cloud! And I'm thinking spending $24.99 on iTunes Match was a waste of money because I still can't access my old music.

When you are done with this issue, consider the computer back at the office may still
have access to your iTunes account, and it should be de-auhorized. You can do that
remotely, but be sure you carefully do not mess up your other computer iTunes libraries.
    Good luck & happy computing!

You can transfer Itunes purchases by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
You can transfer other stuff with the info provided in this previous discussion:

You can also redownload apps at no additional cost:

Once you get the stuff in the iTunes library of you new computer let iTunes erase your iPod and replace its contents with what is now in your iTunes library.

    Hi Rohan,
Are you saying to replace "nat (any, any)" with "nat (inside, outside)"? I was wondering about this because I'd always done "nat (inside, outside)" but a colleague had performed the initial configuration which already contained "nat (any, any)" statement and I was not sure if this was just something new in 8.3.1. I also noticed the "global" command is no longer available.
I will give this a try. Thanks.

You can't "accidentally" put a passcode on any iPhone...its a multi-step process. Further, restoring an iPhone will remove the passcode, as the passcode is not included in an iPhone backup.
Are you sure you're talking about the phone passcode & not something else...like the "Restrictions" passcode?

You IT person should be able to sort this out.  But, they seems to be too busy or disinterested to do this.  Suggest you provide the it person with an iPhone to get interested.
Any could be lots of things.
The best you can do is to get access to the admin setup for networking on a pc?  The internet settings are all the same.  Only what names the manufactures change from OS to OS. Check and compare parameters.
