WiFi vs Cellular Network Data

Alrighty, well I just purchased an iPhone 4 and extremely satisfied. I do have one question, however, that I am trying to figure out and can't for the life of me figure out.
I have a minimal data plan and in the hopes of saving that for the road, obviously I had the phone connect to my home network. It connected and shows the name of the network. Then I went and did some basic surfing and checked the USAGE data for Cellular Network Data and saw that it was still going up. After this I went into network settings and literally turned off Cellular Network Data, but upon doing that Google Maps won't load, nor will any data application (i.e. Safari, Mail, etc...)
I am sure it has an active connection to my WiFi network, so I am just not sure where the problem lies.

It's just cellular data. But applications on your phone can use data in background when the phone is asleep, and WiFi is off when the phone is asleep so all background data will go over the cellular network.

IPHONE 5:  can't receive calls and random error messages, such as "could not activate cellular data network" and "no connection - network unavailable, please connect to wifi or cellular network."  This occurs even when signal strength or wifi is operational, and it does not matter whether wifi is on or off.  ATT went through the standard protocol - resetting network, resetting sim card, etc.  No changes.  Other phones working fine in same region with same carrier.  Apple's solution is to restore software, but haven't gone there yet.  Anyone successfully addressed this/these issues?

I should point out that it worked when the iPhone was set back to factory settings, but when restored with the backup, data/internet no longer works again, and I get the "Could not activate cellular data network" error message yet again.

I had the same issue, whilst my IPhone 5 iOS 7.0.2  was in my pocket all morning, I checked the usage on traffic monitor and it said data usage 1.1 GB.  My setting are:
    icloud:
    mail:off, contacts:on, calenders:on, reminders:on, Safari:off, Notes:on, passbook:on, photos:off, Documents & Data:on(whatsapp only), Find my Iphone:on
    itunes & apps store:
    music:off, Video:off itunes match:off Automatic downloads music:off, apps:off, books:off, update:off
    Podcasts: Auto downloads:off
itunes wifi sync: last sync Friday 11 Oct 2013 (not this morning)
I am using an inmarsat satelite connection if anybody knows any other settings that could cause vast amounts of data to download please advise. After thought would'nt it be nice if apple had an all in one feature(switch) that only allowed Push notifications and safari usage through. Thanks in advance.

  • What is included in the "Cellular Network Data" Received total?

I just purchased a new IPhone 4 from AT&T and within two days the Usage for Cellular Network Data>Received was 1.7GB.  The "Technical Support" guy at AT&T had absolutely no idea what the number included.  I am on a 2GB plan and was obviously distressed to see it only took two days to get near the total.  I had my WiFi on and thought I was downloading over it, not the cellular network.
The Tech Support guy kept telling me I had only 1.7MB so far to be billed on and wondered (didn't know for sure) if the 1.7GB received included the WiFi data. Am I reading the number wrong?
Help - I don't want any cost overruns!

    What is "Other"
It’s generally a combination of local caches from apps, browsers, mail, Messages, Reading List, saved games, app-specific documents and data, notes, and voice memos.
You can backup and restore to reduce "other" but they will start building up over time.

Is there any chance that you must have it in the package of your provider as an option?

  • After upgrade to 3.0, I loose connection after wifi to cellular network

After upgrade to 3.0, When I quit a wifi zone, I loose connection to cellular network. I have to restart the IPhone to find the cellular network. I am on FIDO with a candian number.
That look like the phone can't jump to the cellular network.

Data Settings for Pay & Go and Pay Monthly
    (non iPhone tariff) customers
If you're a Pay & Go customer and have the iPhone OS 3.0 Software, you'll need to change your iPhone APN (data) settings. This will get features like mobile internet and picture messaging (MMS) working. Details below.
If you're a Pay Monthly customer but don't have the iPhone Bolt On, or a specific iPhone tariff, then you won't be able to get the full iPhone experience.
Here's what you'll need to do:
From the main screen of your iPhone tap Settings > General > Network
It has done thre same for UK pay and go:
    http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/settings.html
    Under Cellular Data Network
For Pay & Go customers. Tap APN and change idata.o2.co.uk and enter payandgo.o2.co.uk (Please note that "o2" needs to be written with a letter "o" and not a zero)
For Pay Monthly customers. Tap APN and change idata.o2.co.uk and enter mobile.o2.co.uk (Please note that "o2" needs to be written with a letter "o" and not a zero)
You don't need to change your username and password
Ignore the Visual Voicemail APN box - it's not available to Pay & Go customers or Pay Monthly customers (with a non iPhone tariff)
    Under MMS
For Pay & Go customers. Tap APN and change idata.o2.co.uk and enter payandgo.o2.co.uk (Please note that o2 needs to be written with a letter o and not a zero)
For Pay Monthly customers. Tap APN and change idata.o2.co.uk and enter wap.o2.co.uk (Please note that o2 needs to be written with a letter o and not a zero)
You don't need to change your username and password
Turn your iPhone off and on again
If you're a Pay & Go iPhone customer, using your iPhone sim for the first time, you'll need to top up by at least £10.

  • Iphone 4 doesn't choose wifi over cellular for data

I've got a 32gb iPhone 4. I often use it at work where I get no or nearly no cellular signal. Even though I am connected to a perfectly functional wifi network, when I try to use Safari, the phone tries desperately to connect to cellular and I get the spinning wheel. I thought the phone was supposed to automatically prefer wifi over cellular. I've checked and the wifi network is working just fine (the phone also displays the wifi icon at the top indicating that it's connected to the network). I tried switching off "cellular data" in the Network settings panel. This got Safari working over wifi, but email still won't function and gives me an endless spinning wheel as it tries to find a cellular signal. Is there a setting I'm missing to force the phone to use wifi when it's available?

Sending the imessage needs a little time. While it sending, press and hold on for a while, you can see the "Send as text message" option. If you have a ios6 or ealier version, this option is always availible. But if you get a ios7, this option can only be seen when the imessage is sending or failed.
So double press the blue bubble as soon as you see them, and hold on for a second to wait for the option to come out, you will see the option "Send as text  message".

  • In correct Usage calculation of "cellular network data" must include wifi?

I just noticed that I have used 1GB in 4 days of usage according to my usage screen on iphone 4, this is obviously incorrect.
So I did a test "reset statistics" and did some wifi data and bam, up went my cell data usage.
Also checked my account online and it said 41Mb in traffic.
Anyone else see the same bug?

Best way to see what cell data usage is to log onto your acct at AT&T website.

  • I would like to synch my iPhone with iTunes so that some of the music is SYNCHED to the device (i.e. certain playlists). Currently, it seems like the phone will only allow me to play music via MATCH/Cloud (wifi or cellular network)

We recently got a new iMac.
Synching has been a bit of a challenge. We also recently upgraded to include CLOUD / Match service.
Now, when I synch my iPHone to iTunes, the music section does not allow me to download certain songs / artists / albums / playlists DIRECTLY to my iPHone. I would prefer to have the music resident on the phone vs relying on wifi or my cellular coverage.

Right. That's you signed up for iTunes Match.
I would prefer to have the music resident on the phone vs relying on wifi or my cellular coverage.
You can do either or both.
Download the songs to the iPhone when on wifi (to avoid using all your cell data)  adn they will be resident ont he phone.
Or simply stream them when you want and not download them.
You can create playlists in iTunes on your computer. These will get transferred to the iPhone via iTunes Match.
Then select these playlists on the iPhone to download them to the iPhone.

  • Is Cellular Network Data Usage persisted to a new phone

I got my original 3GS on release day in 2009 as an upgrade to a 1G. In around September 2009 it developed a problem with the mute switch so I had it replaced at my local Apple Store.
A friend just asked me what my data usage is (as he is looking at his first smart phone contract and doesn't know how much data allowance to include) so I checked my stats on the 3GS.
It says at the bottom Last Reset: Never so my question is, when does Never begin?
My current 3GS was restored from the backup of my original 3GS when it was replaced and I'm nott 100% sure but I think that the original 3GS may have been restored from the 1G.
So, does my usage stat include only the current 3GS or does it include the original 3GS (and possibly 1G if I restored from it)?
    Many thanks!

Texts don't count as part of your data usage. Apps like weather/maps/stocks/etc, email, internet, Youtube, iTunes store all count towards data usage.

    Hello All Who Read This!
I just bought an iPhone 5 on the 21st of March. I ate through 850 MB's in 12 days. I read up on the issue of data consumption looking for tips to conserve data. I did not know there was a problem.
This morning I found out that I was leaking data very little, but daily it accumulates. I am in Barcelona, Spain. I do not have a contract, I am on a prepaid Yoigo carrier.
I happened upon an article/blog by Robert Parks at snnyc.com "problems persist in ios 6.1.2.".
Although his situation did not relate to me, I tried a few tests on my own to see if I could stop the data leak without turning off my celular data and possibly push notifications, I think I found a solution that might help someone:
In ios 6.1.3 goto Settings/Mail, Contacts,Calenders and scroll down to Calendars and turn off " New Invitation Alerts" and also turn off "Shared Calendar Alerts".
My Cellular Network Data seems to be behaving. I only see a change in MB used when I open an ap that uses data.
    All The Best

  • I've lost my iphone with passcode lock and find my iphone lock on but the wifi n cellular data was turned off so no way i can trace it so the only question remains is will the person who finds it be able to unlock it and use it as his own ?

i've lost my iphone with passcode lock and find my iphone lock on but the wifi n cellular data was turned off so no way i can trace it so the only question remains is will the person who finds it be able to unlock it and use it as his own ?
is it possible to change imei number?
i've tried for so many times n still the phone is offline so i've set it to offline mode with my message but it never shows the last location why?

If the device is found, nobody can use it without knowing your Apple ID and password.
The phone will only show it's location if it is connected to cellular network or Wi-Fi. If those options are switched off, you can't locate the phone.
With iOS 7, Find My iPhone includes a new feature called Activation Lock, which is designed to prevent anyone else from using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if you ever lose it. It starts working the moment you turn on Find My iPhone in iOS 7. With Activation Lock, your Apple ID and password will be required before anyone can:
Turn off Find My iPhone on your device
    Erase your device
    Reactivate and use your device
This can help you keep your device secure, even if it is in the wrong hands, and can improve your chances of recovering it. Even if you erase your device remotely, Activation Lock can continue to deter anyone from reactivating your device without your permission. All you need to do is keep Find My iPhone turned on, andremember your Apple ID and password.
What steps should I take if I misplace my device?
If you ever misplace your device—whether it’s just lost or you think it may have been stolen—you should put it into Lost Mode immediately using Find My iPhone.
Lost Mode locks your screen with a four-digit passcode and lets you display a custom message with your phone number to help you get it back. You can also remotely erase your device if needed, and your custom message will continue to display even after the device is erased.
While Activation Lock works in the background to make it more difficult for someone to use or sell your missing device, Lost Mode clearly indicates to anyone who finds your device that it still belongs to you and can’t be reactivated without your password.
To put a device into Lost Mode, sign in to icloud.com/find from a Mac or PC or use the Find My iPhone iOS app.
For more information, read what to do if your device is lost or stolen.

    Hey aries35,
I found the following that goes over troubleshooting the same issue for the iPhone. I know you have an iPad, but the steps should still apply:
    Perform the following steps:
    Restart the iPhone.
Try another means of reaching the activation server and attempt to activate.
Try connecting to a known-good Wi-Fi network if you're unable to activate using a cellular data connection.
Try connecting to iTunes if you're unable to activate using Wi-Fi.
    Restore the iPhone.
If you receive an alert message when you attempt to activate your iPhone, try to place the iPhone in recovery mode and perform a restore. If you're still unable to complete the setup assistant due to an activation error, contact Apple for assistance.

  • Unable to connect to Wifi when cellular data is on

As I understand it, I should be able to have both WiFi and Cellular data turned on, and the phone should default to WiFi when a preferred network is in range, and 3G when I'm out of range.
However, when I have cellular data enabled and I attempt to connect to WiFi, it always says "Unable to connect to network".   As soon as I turn off cellular data, it connects right away.   It does this both at home and at work.
If I enable WiFi (and connect) while in range, then enable cellular data, it will end the WiFi connection, but constantly pop up windows asking which network I want to join, only to tell me I can't connect to them when I try.
My workaround has been to turn off 3G and turn on WiFi when I get in range, and do the opposite when I leave, which means I'm doing this 4 times a day.  Annoying to say the least.
Ideas?  I am unable to use a static IP at work (I have seen some fixes using a static IP).

as far as i know there is no fix without using a staic IP however you might want to check with your Service Provider and see if you are eligible for an upgrade
