WiFi vs. Edge

Hello people,
I just got my iPhone and i have a few questions about the Networking. I am not super familiar with Networking but i would like to know more. My main question is what is the difference between Edge and WiFi? Is there any hidden charges from AT&T while using either Edge or WiFi? Sometimes i will be in a room that has WiFi and it appears in my WiFi settings but even when i click on it and the signal apears at the top of the screen i still cannot get on the interent. It could be a problem with the network in that area but i would like to know if there is anything i can do in this situation. Is there anyway to toggle off Edge even if i am not getting a Wifi connection? Thanks

The $20/mo data plan with the iPhone is unlimited but applies to EDGE access only.
AT&T's EDGE network is accessed via cell towers - the same used for placing and receiving calls and text messages. This can be described as a fast dial-up access speed which is much slower that when accessing a WiFi or wireless network. There are no additional charges by AT&T for accessing a WiFi network but some public WiFi networks require payment for access and others are free. Many coffee shops, restaurants and shopping centers offer free WiFi access for their customers - some require a login via a website that comes up automatically with Safari after connecting to the provider's WiFi network and others it is a matter of selecting the available network.

  • All aps that require wifi or edge not working

Is anyone else having this problem. I can't connect using wifi or edge. All I get is no service.

I just posted a similar thread, under a different category.
I'm having a similar prob. I got my phone replaced today, wifi works, edge doesn't. I have a edge symbol present though.
If it's not one problem, it's another.
    agh!!

  • Podcast syncing via WiFi and EDGE

It sure would be nice if the iPhone could update podcast feeds via WiFi and EDGE. This would be great for more time-sensitive podcasts such as news podcasts and/or those updated on a daily basis.

While it is theoretically possible to podcast over wifi, edge is not a timing sensitive protocol. The data gets there when it gets there and that is it. Even if edge had enough bandwidth to run the podcast (which it generally doesn't) it wouldn't be a pleasent experience.

  • No WIFI OR Edge network after 3.0 update on first generation

I'm working with an original 1st generation iPhone.
I updated which seemed to go well (compared to horror stories I heard from my 3G friends earlier this afternoon). After the update I noticed some major issues:
    1. I can not connect to WIFI networks
    2. I can not even connect to the Edge network (therefore the internet just straight up doesn't work).
    3. I can not access voice mail.
    4. It cleared all of my text message conversations.
    5. It cleared all of my recent calls.
    6. It reset my settings in a few of my apps.
I CAN make calls and send/receive texts.
I can live with having to deal with 4, 5, and 6, but not having 1, 2, and 3, is just ridiculous.
    Can anyone help?

I also have the original iPhone and I am also in Pittsburgh and my EDGE network is down. I did not get the software update though. Maybe the storms last night caused an issue with AT&T's network. Please let me know if you hear anything on this. Thanks!

  • Poor WiFi on Edge 15

I purchased the Edge 15 two days ago from Best Buy. Brought it home and did the setup and it seemed slow. Not the processor, but the downloads. I ran a speed test and was getting 1 Mbps download but 5 mbps upload. I pay for up to 50 Mbps. I checked the speed on the phone via Wifi while sitting infront of the computer and was able to get the usual 30 Mbps. So I went in and updated BIOS, Intel network drivers, and ran a Windows update for 8.1. The problem remained. I took the laptop down to the router and plugged in a wired connection and was getting the usual 30 mbps. I updated the firmware on my wireless router and had no improvement. Switched over to the 5 Ghz WiFi connection and will get 25-30 Mbps, but it is inconsistant. Sometimes it will drop down to 1-2 Mbps. I've also tried manual dumps of the temp files and the DNS to no avail. It seems to me that there is a setting or program that is throttling the connection since no other devices in the house have that issue. Any assistance is appreciated.

For those with Lenovo Edge 15 (not ThinkPad Edge 15 !), please try to install BIOS.

  • 3G vs WIFI vs EDGE

can someone explain the difference? this is my understanding.
wifi is the fastest, 3g next and att's edge slowest. all are data networks and have nothing to do with voice transmission
though one can use wifi via the internet to make calls.
wifi has a symbol that looks like radio waves transmitting....several
hemisperes that radiate out, sometimes with one blue, sometimes all three.
3G appears in a box when 3g is active, E appears in a box when edge is active.

can't give a techie response and only some simple input on my experiences...
first, 3G simply refers to "third generation" networking signal capability compared to previous wireless generations. Believe it or not, they are already working on a "4G" due out in another couple years or so... Not sure about "voice" quality not being better on one over the other... if you are getting a better signal being connected to 3G network... I would think your voice quality and signal would be impacted.. another techie question.
While I live in a supposedly, "very strong" 3G and EDGE geo rgn. I can be in my home and one minute have a good signal showing 3-4 bars, and 5-min later, lose my 3G signal all together without moving an inch... signal will continue to vacillate. So last evening opted to jump on my home wi-fi network at the opposite end of my house, and was able to maintain a very strong signal without vacillating signal strength. If your novice to your 3G phone, I also noted that when I do a "location" finder on myself on 3G network from my house, I am shown in "hybrid" mode as being located next door at my neighbor's house... whereas, as you might expect (so I thought) that jumping on my home wi-fi network that it was dead-on. Interesting thing was that when I did a gas station search on 3G network, I was a couple of buildings away from the actual gas station location... but when I went to my home wi-fi network, was again dead-on? I am sure a techie out there can explain that. I have also learned in my four days of owning my 3G iPhone that if you are able to plug-in a specific house # and street, you will be most likely to get a better read on your location.

  • Maps only locating with wifi not Edge

Using Wifi, Maps can pin point me down to a matter of yards... at a street address I lived in over a year ago! Using the Edge network I am not found at all and I understand that's a function of cell tower location. I can accept that and will try again when moving.
But any ideas where the Wifi side of it would be getting data on me over a year old and pin pointing me there?
I began to think perhaps the past year was all a dream and my iPhone was my only link to the real world with that dream... maybe I'll wake up soon.

On Wi-Fi, my system also localizes me to an address I used over a year ago. I do have the same base station as I did at that previous address.
I think it has something to do with Skyhook and how they localize your address by literally driving around and picking up hotspots and recording locations. They must still think that the signal given off by my wireless router is at my old address because they haven't rescanned over the past year.
And this strategy is useful how??

  • Iphone wifi issues & edge

alright, here is whats going on: the iphone is connected to a wifi signal but doesn't have a regular cell signal so it cant use wifi. i try to use safari or youtube or any other internet app but it says that it couldnt connect using edge. shouldnt it be trying to use the wifi signal which is full bars? is there something i have o do inside the wifi preferences like dealing with the ip address or the http proxy? thanks for all the help

Try removing the SIM card and see if you can connect via Wifi. I get the same message, but then WiFi connects with no issues.

  • IPhone, WiFi, and Edge

I am using my iPhone in two different WiFi zones. Both assign IP addresses based on my MAC address. One also requires a password (which I successfully entered, and the iPhone remembered). The signal where I work in both places is maximum strength as acknowledged both by the bars on my iPhone as well as those on my laptop which has no problem with the signal in either location. In the one case, I am as close as ten feet away from the wireless router. The WiFi icon appears in the top status bar on the iPhone (although sometimes I have to enter/exit Airplane mode to get it there), it remains there when I bring up Safari, but the minute I start to traverse web pages, the WiFi icon disappears and is replaced by the Edge icon. The only way I have successfully been able to get the WiFi icon back is to either enter and exit Airplane mode, or power cycle the iPhone. Does anyone know how I can keep the iPhone "talking WiFi"?

As long as the WiFi icon is there, these all have the settings I would expect: I see the IP address I am supposed to have, the correct router, subnet mask, etc. As soon as the Edge icon comes back, however, they aren't. The IP address begins with "169.254...", and the subnet mask goes to 255.255.0.0. The router and DNS boxes are then blank.

  • Bit of Bandwidth data on WiFi vs Edge

My home uses an Airport Extreme. The bandwidth from SBC DSL on my MBP 17 is usually around 1150 Kbps (as measured by the CNET bandwidth website). When I do the same test on the iPhone through the my Wi-Fi, I get a bandwidth around 385 Kbps. Not bad. On Edge, close in clock time, 177 Kbps.
Not very scientific, one trial for each. The test was done at 9 PM EDT.
    MacBook Pro 17   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Thought I'd share my numbers now that I have a wifi router (bought one just for my iPhone!). My EDGE at home is usually around 170 kbps. When connecting to my router over wifi, which is connected to a cable mode, my iPhone tests at around 4500 kbps, same as my desktop computers. It's awesome! Sadly I am now able to notice that the iPhone's 650 mhz CPU isn't able to render "busier" web pages as fast as my desktops.

  • Email Problems: WiFi Fine EDGE Doesn't Work

I can send and receive email with wi-fi no problem. I can receive when on Edge but I can't send when on Edge. Anyone have any advice? Have I missed some setting that I don't know about?

    I FIGURED IT OUT MYSELF!

  • Can't use EDGE after connecting to my WiFi point.

This is weird. Every time I connect to my WiFi point, and then disconnect (go too far, turn of WiFi), my EDGE stops working. If I try to load a page, it'll just spin there, and then time out. To get the intenet back, I need to reset my network settings. It's a 3G, latest FW. What's wrong?

There are only four possible causes for your issue:
    1) Software issue (fix: restore)
    2) SIM card issue (fix: get a new SIM card)
    3) Network issue (fix: call your carrier)
    4) Hardware issue (fix: replace iPhone)
It would appear we can rule out 2 & 3. That only leaves 1 & 4.
You can try restoring your phone from a backup(backup first), that will restore a fresh OS, but if the problem is with data on your phone, it will merely restore the problem.
Restore your phone as a "new" device in itunes and re-sync your content. You will lose all saved data doing this
If neither of the above work, you most likely have a hardware issue, as there are no further troubleshooting steps available.

  • Gmail imap *very* slow in WiFi/EDGE

I have two IMAP accounts on my iPhone: one for my school account, one for my gmail account. When I check for new mail in my school account, it takes 1-2 seconds. Checking for new mail in the gmail account sometimes takes 30 - 60 seconds. However, when I check mail right after that happens, it's done in 1-2 seconds.
It happens on both WiFi and EDGE.
    Any thoughts?
    Peter

That happened once to me and I got rid of that by going to setting - airplane mode -ON, wait 30 seconds, turn it off and retry... it will reset both your wifi and edge connections

  • Can't send email over EDGE from hosted gmail domain. Works fine over WIFI

I'm trying to send email from my google apps hosted doman over EDGE network.
I'm using port 587, SSL, authentication: password.
Works fine over WIFI but edge network rejects it every time.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Ben

I'm running into the exact same issue. However, I am running my own mail server and not going through Gmail. On wi-fi, everything works fine. On Edge, I receive the error message indicating that the server is not responding, unable to connect to server, etc. I spoke to Apple support and they just walked me through the settings and said that they did not know what was wrong and suspected there is something wrong with the phone and wanted me to take it to the retail store to have them look at it and possibly send it in for repair. When I spoke to ATT they said that they are not experiencing any disruptions in the Edge network and that they also suspect it is the phone. I personally do not believe it is a defective phone. I upgraded my phone a couple of days ago the 1.1.2 firmware and within 24 hours later I started having this problem. I also tried setting up a connection to my .mac account and experienced the exact same thing there, so I know it is not isolated to my mail server. Funny thing is, I can access the internet over the Edge network just fine, so this has something to do with either the mail ports being blocked somehow within the Edge network or has to do something with the Mail Application on the iPhone which is not recognizing or not able to connect through the establised Edge connection. Maybe there is some sort of firewall on the iPhone that is blocking those ports? If anyone from Apple or ATT is listening, please investigate! I do not want to mail my phone in for repair when it is a perfectly good phone and may be able to be fixed with another firmware update.

  • WIFI --- EDGE problem

Sorry for the new thread.. I don't know how to delete my other one. I found my own question confusing, so wanted to re-phrase my post:
Basically the problem seems to be from the Wifi to EDGE transition. When I leave the house and the WiFi gets out of range, EDGE doesn't start working. E-mails won't check and I cannot connect on SAFARI or AppStore.
It then works for a while and then locks up again... I need to switch On and Off Airplane mode to restart EDGE... it gets annoying after a while..
I cannot replicate the problem by simply turning off Wifi when I'm at home.
Does this sound like a problem I should call Apple on? I hate the long wait time, so I'm hoping someone has an answer here...

Shameless bump. Really need an answer

  • Using email through Edge and WiFi other than my at my home

When I first got my iPhone I could not send mail, but I could receive mail whether I was on WiFi or Edge. I synced my iPhone with my work laptop and now I can receive and send mail, but ONLY on my WiFi at home. I can not send or receive email anywhere else whether it is another WiFi or Edge. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Thank you for replying. Is there a way that I can tell what kind of SMTP I need to be using? I am using a Mediacom account, our local cable company. My incoming and outgoing mail server is mail.mchsi.com according to Mediacom.
