Wifi WEP password not working on Windows side, works fine on Mac side

I have not been able to get connected to my wireless connection with windows xp however I have no problem on the mac side. The problem is that my password is 12 characters (not 13). This WEP password works fine on the mac side and also works fine on my iphone. It also works on an older Dell laptop, so it just doesn't make sense. If my password is supposed to be 13 characters (as windows tells me) how come I can connect to everything else?

Hmmmm, interesting! Well, ASCII or HEXADECIMAL, both were designed pretty much for the same purpose, to allow a computer to understand what the heck it is we want them to do (since computers only understand binary - 0100101110011 .. etc).
That character limitation I would guess is probably a limitation of the router, I have no idea, but it seems like that would severely limit security and if it were me I would get another router (but that's just me ). Xnav might have a point, but to this day, OS X has never done that to me. It wouldn't hurt to give his suggestion a try though. Hope you get it worked out soon. I'm sure it's frustrating.

The use of WEP is not recommended for compatibility, reliability, performance, and security reasons; WEP is insecure and functionally obsolete. Any reason you're using WEP? I ask, because you might as well not have any security at all, & this is most likely your issue.

  • Wep password not recognised

My Airport WEP password is not being recognised when I want to login to my home netgear base from my Macbook pro, but the same password is being recognised when another Mac is used. It used to work but they did something with the configuration at work and now I just can't connect.

Most buisnesses don't use WEP anymore due to the risks.  I suspect your IT guys changed your Mac to WPA.  You need to check this in the Airport settings in System Preferences....

  • WEP password not accepted. Two separate Airport based offices.

I have an Airport network setup in two different locations/offices (Leeds and London).
It was all working fine and the WEP password worked and the iBooks and Mac Books all logged in automatically once setup. This worked fine for months from installation.
Now, for no apparent reason and no changes on the AirPort, the WEP password is not being accepted and the laptops cannot connect any more.
Has a software update done this? I can't think so as 3 of the laptops have not been updated for the last 3-4 months and the Airports started acting like mthis two weeks ago.

    Hi,
The Airport base Stations have not been updated since purchase. One is about 7 months old, the other about 2.5 months old.
Does this mean you think that the previous software / formware was faulty and this discconnection or loss of WEP password is simply a fault and a SW UpDate will fix it?
I've not tried your suggeestion of no encryption or WPA yet as I will not visit the sites again for 3-4 weeks, but surely any setting available should be stable?
    Thank you.

  • Search not working in Windows 7, works on XP

    Hi folks,
We had quite a time getting RoboHelp for Word to work on our new Windows 7 machines. The highest supported combination (of RoboHelp version and Word version) that we were aware of from the postings on this site did not work. Long story.
Anyway, we ended up reinstalling RoboHelp 7 and Word 2007. We have Word 2010 on our machines for other things, but we use 2007 exclusively for RoboHelp. We still save our files as .docs instead of .docxs. (This was a decision made long ago and there was a reason for it, I think, but I don't know it now. :-P  I'm just mentioning it on the off chance that it's relevant.)
We thought all our problems were over - the help seemed to be compiling fine - BUT: the Search tab does not work on Windows 7 machines. Comes up completely blank.
The same help file, including the Search tab, will work fine on  XP machines.
    Any advice?
    Thanks in advance - Sandy

anyone know how to fix this?

  • WEP Password not being accepted

As someone is hopping onto my network I set up a WEP Password on my wireless router.
My macbookpro running 10.5.3 joins the network with no problem when asked for the passport, as does my ipod touch but my iMac with 10.4.11 just comes back with "there was an error connecting to the network".
    Any ideas?

Well I've found the answer myself after stumbling around so will leave what I found here for posterity and in case anyone else finds the same problem.
On all my devices it just asked for the WEP Password which I entered (a five letter word) and it was accepted.
On the imac that didn't work, until I tried the WEP 40/128-bit ASCII option - which I imagined couldn't work, yet it DID!
What I saw as the the password was converted into hex - PLUS it included a $ at the start, something that I never saw in any of the various manuals or literature that came with any connected item.
So now I'm only left with whatever issues arrive when I get a wireless connection for my xBox 360…

  • WEP password not accepted for joining existing wireless network

My router has WEP security with a 10 digit 64-bit hex value. When I type it into the connection wizard it complains I need 13 digits. I have tried adding a $ and "s but to no avail. What is the trick?

Hello SteveWhite. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling the use of simple easy to remember WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys. The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AirPort Express (AX) will be hashed differently on a non-Apple client and vice versa.
You may find the following Apple article helpful. Also, have you considered switching to WPA or WPA2, since WEP is no longer considered secure?

  • WEP Password Not Accepted

I have a Netgear router which hosts the 802.11g wireless network in my house. We have 4 computers that connect, 2 are macs. My iBook G4 was recently reformatted, and now I cant connect to my network. The network has a 10 digit numerical WEP password, and the other computers in the house connect to it just fine. When I type in the password, it says "There was an error connecting to the airport network". Using network setup assistant, i get the message "The password you entered is invalid". I have checked and double checked and the password is right. What could be the problem?

herzeleid22, Welcome to the discussion area!
If all of your equipment supports WPA2 or WPA, I would change the encryption to that. That eliminates the incompatibilities that appear in WEP.
If you must use WEP, change to a 13 character password as recommended in KB 108058, Choosing a password for networks that use Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP).

  • System password not regognised with install of Tiger update on mac restart

    Hi all,
I have just installed the latest Tiger update and on the machine restarting after installation to complete the install process, a message comes up asking for the password so that the Tiger update can access the system.
When I type in my password, it says it is wrong.
Caps lock is not on and I have tried variations to no avail.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you.

I must add that this very same password that I am trying still works on software installs and so forth.

  • IPad wifi connection password not memorized !

Actually Apple doesn't read these messages. These are user-to-user forums.
To report a problem to Apple visit http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html or contact Apple support.
Perhaps someone could offer some help if you gave some details of the specifics of you problem, i.e., router make and model, encryption type (WEP, WPA, WPA2), WiFi type 802.11g or n, etc.
The iPad should automatically connect to known networks. Note that for most iPad users this is the case. If you search these forums you will find many posts about having to re-enter WiFi passwords see also Apple trouble shooting guide 3304 - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3304

  • Wep password not connecting to router

I have a Powerbook G4 12" running OSX 10.4.11. I usually have no problems connecting to wireless routers. I am currently in Europe and the place I am staying at has a wireless router through ADSL network and I can pick it up on my wireless menu and the password they gave me is good. It works for their Windows laptops without any problems, but when I connect I get a message of Unable to connect. I read on another forums to try and put a $ in front of the password and that did not work either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As you haven't had any traffic on this subject, allow me to suggest that you repost in either the PowerBook G4 forums here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=120
(select your machine's sub-forum by type and screen size), or in the Tiger OS Networking sub-forum here:

You've ended up in the forum for late-model G4 mini-towers like the one pictured under my name at the left. You are better off posting in the areas I linked.

  • WEP Password Not Recognized

trying to help my son set up Linksys WRT546. Wireless works fine if Security Mode is Disable, but when I set to WEP and enter a password, generate and save, and then try to sign on the network, I keep getting invalid password. I can then switch security mode back to Disable and name appears w/o password protection, but at least works.
Why isn't the password I am entering on the Wireless Security site, not recognized?
    thanks,
    Armando
    Solved!

    Hi,
If you are gonna use WEP, just type anything in the PASSPHRASE field and then copy the KEY 1, because that will serve as your PASSWORD. If you use 64-bit WEP, it will generate a 10-character password as you can see on Key 1-4. But, if you want to use your own password and not let the router generate one for you, please select WPA instead. Please refer to the link below.

  • IMac won't start in mac. Will only start in Windows, option key won't work to allow me to get to mac side. downloaded avast last week. Worried this could be the problem??

iMac was making a strange sound yesterday. I shutdown and restarted now it will only boot in windows vista.  I've tried option key that doesn't work, I've tried command R no luck.  I've left un-plugged, not sure what to do. I don't even get the white screen like it's trying to load, it goes directly to windows vista, once in windows I can't get anywhere to try and go back.  I did download avast the other week, it seemed to be running fine until yesterday. UGH

If you are running OS X "Lion" or later, boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. For Snow Leopard, start your Mac while holding the c key with its original OS X Install DVD inserted in its optical drive.
At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red. If Disk Utility reports "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK" in green then you can be reasonably (though not completely) assured your hard disk is in good working order.
If you manage to boot OS X, uninstall Avast. Its effect on a Mac has progressed from complete and utter worthlessness to maliciousness.
Be sure to use its latest uninstaller, which will remove it completely.
