WiFi WEP

I Have a WiFi network at home. All the computers were Windows. Recently an unknown user has shown up so I added a 10 byte hex WEP to the WiFi network. My laptop and remote computer are fine. The question-- How do I enter the hex WEP password into the iphone? Must I convert to an ASCII password to accommodate the iPhone? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, you should change your wifi router  to WPA2 encryption method.  Here are other recommendations:

Please anybody could help me to get connected my ipad2 to a wifi wep. The ipad recognizes the wifi but not able to connect... Thanks

This is from the Apple WiFi trouble-shooting document: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
    - If you are using WEP security and have multiple WEP keys on your Wi-Fi router, try configuring your Wi-Fi router to use only a single WEP key in key index 1.
    - Consider using WPA or WPA2 instead. WPA and WPA2 encryption protocols are newer, more effective security options for wireless networks than the older WEP protocol.
WEP security should really not be used. It has been deprecated by the WiFi Alliance as insecure since 2004 (it can be cracked in seconds by hackers).

Help! I have to keep entering my wifi WEP password every time I slide my iphone 4S on  again.  It doesn't store the password as it should.

The use of WEP is not recommended for compatibility, reliability, performance, and security reasons; WEP is insecure and functionally obsolete. Any reason you're using WEP? I ask, because you might as well not have any security at all, & this is most likely your issue.

  • Iphone keeps forgetting wifi wep key

last Thursday  I took mi  iphone 4s to  apple store otay ranch San diego CA  my wifi was  greyed out  & said  no  wiffi   what  they  did  is they  restore  my
Iphone  & updated iOS5.1.1  thw  wifi is  working again  now   My iphone keeps forgetting my home and work wifi wep key. I can connect to it and its fine and

  • Wifi WEP passphrase vs. key - how to connect?

My iTouch only connects to my secure Wifi by using the 26 character WEP key when challenged for the Network password. How can I get my iTouch to connect using the passphrase, instead, which is much easier to remember?
The network password gets blown out everytime I reset my iTouch (which is a sucky "feature", IMO).
    TIA

    Hi,
The issue may be the length of the password phrase. If you are using WEP, you'll want to use a 5 or 13 character password phrase as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1344
If you are already using a 5 or 13 character password phrase, you may be able to resolve the issue by Resetting Network Settings on the iPhone. To Reset Network Settings tap Settings> General> Reset> Reset Network Settings.
+"When you reset network settings, your list of previously used networks and your VPN+
+settings are removed. Wi-Fi is turned off and then back on, disconnecting you from any+
+network you’re on. The Wi-Fi and “Ask to Join Networks” settings are left turned on."+

  • Cannot connect OSX 10.4 Tiger to wifi WEP personal

I have two old G3's or G4's that can only run OSX 10.4 Tiger. They connect to unsecured routers just fine.
But the problem is they cannot connect to my Q1000 Centurylink wifi router when i put a password on it. I have tried WEP and WPA-personal and used AES and TKIP configurations, but they tell me they are unable to connect. I know there are few of these around but it seems odd that i cannot find this issue on the internet with a Google search.
Can you think of any work around?
A different forum that is more relevant?

Hi, on WEP try Putting a $ in front of the password...
    $paswd
    If 5 chrs.
    Or...
nstead of joining it from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed. Before I went through network diagnostics and all of that stuff in system preferences, and then I tried the "Join Other Network" method, and now it works like a dream.
On WPA personal, the original Airport cards neede a Firmware update to do that, & they cant do WPA2.

  • Mountain Lion wifi WEP security connection issues

After installing Mountain Lion I experienced connection issues with my linksys router when waking from sleep. After trying numerous recommended fixes that would only work for a short period of time I have come across a fix that resolved all issues.
    1. Login to your router and changed from WEP to WAP security settings.
    2. In network preferences>advanced; delete the previous WEP network from your preferred networks.
    3. Open Keychain Access (spotlight search) and delete the Airport network password from both login and system.
    4. Search for new wifi networks and select the new WAP connection to your router.
This has completely resolved my issue and forced my lazy self to upgrade from the outdated WEP secutiry protocol to WAP.
Hope this helps anybody experiencing this issue.

I think you mean WPA, i.e. WPA2 (personal) for best security, compatibility and performance (or is Linksys different?)

  • N80 WiFi - WEP key doesn't save after upgr to 4.06...

Upgraded my N80 i-net version to latest firmware 4.0623.042 & since then WEP key set up in Access Point doesn't get save. I get asked for WEP Key every time I try to access WLAN. Anyone having same issues? WiFi access was working fine prior to upgrade.
    Thanks in advance
    Vic

    Just an update to this
Thanks to a comment on another post I noticed I was able to start iTunes by right-clicking iTunes on the Start menu and select Run As Administrator.  This seemed to work fine, but still I could not run without doing this afterward.  Note: I'm already an administrator, and I don't fully understand the difference.
Anyway, I have decided to uninstall 10.4, reinstall 10.3, and reinstate the 10.3 library.  All works fine now, so I suspect something is not quite right in 10.4.
I should have taken the 'If its not broke, then don't upgrade it' approach. I get too complacent sometimes...

In both case is the same problems
N900 have problems with WEP ??
    Can anybody help me ?
    Thanks

WEP encryption is not safe anymore. Use a WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK passfrase if you can. It's much easier to set up.

  • Wifi WEP password not working on Windows side, works fine on Mac side

I have not been able to get connected to my wireless connection with windows xp however I have no problem on the mac side. The problem is that my password is 12 characters (not 13). This WEP password works fine on the mac side and also works fine on my iphone. It also works on an older Dell laptop, so it just doesn't make sense. If my password is supposed to be 13 characters (as windows tells me) how come I can connect to everything else?

Hmmmm, interesting! Well, ASCII or HEXADECIMAL, both were designed pretty much for the same purpose, to allow a computer to understand what the heck it is we want them to do (since computers only understand binary - 0100101110011 .. etc).
That character limitation I would guess is probably a limitation of the router, I have no idea, but it seems like that would severely limit security and if it were me I would get another router (but that's just me ). Xnav might have a point, but to this day, OS X has never done that to me. It wouldn't hurt to give his suggestion a try though. Hope you get it worked out soon. I'm sure it's frustrating.

  • IPod Touch 2G loses WiFi WEP connection, have to re-enter SID and password

We bought a new iPod Touch this week, and it keeps dropping/forgetting the WiFi connection settings. My network consists of a Netgear N router set to mixed mode (B/G/N), WPA, MAC filtering, SSID is not broadcast. I have added the new iPod Touch's MAC address to the routers filter list. On the new iPod I choose Other at the choose a network setting, entered the router information and password, and it connected fine. For a short time it continues to connect fine, but after a few hours or the next day it won't connect (and in network settings it no longer lists my router to connect to). I have to go through the process of choosing other, re-entering the network settings password, and it repeats again...works for awhile, then forgets the setting. We've restored the iPod...same problem
I have 2 iPhones and 2 Gen 1 iPod Touches that we are currently using that have never shown this behavior. The Gen 1 iPod Touches are upgraded to SW version 2.2.1 (5H11).
There are so many postings on the net about the 2nd gen iPod touch having wifi problems that I'm suspicious there's a hardware or software bug that remains unsolved, and am ready to return this unit to BestBuy while I still can unless I can find a solution on this forum.

First of all, turning off SSID was a work around for the issue. Am now consistently connecting to the network. Thank you!!
But in response to luvlab's last response -- how could an issue supporting a common feature of every wireless router ever made not be considered a bug? That would be just plain silly. Given how long the iPod Touch 2G has been out, I fear you're right -- it's a bug in the design that can't be patched with software and is too costly to fix (or it would have been fixed by now), so SSID is just a "feature" that isn't supported.
But still -- I thought apple was better than that (tech marketing, design, software, validation, test), so I hope you're wrong.

  • WEP keys - is there a "remember" function?

Is it correct that every time I connect to my WEP secure wifi network that I have to enter my (24 digit) WEP key again? Surely the touch has a "remember password" function (given that it is designed to be portable!)??
I'm also grumbling about the lack of copy and paste app which could at least save some trouble with this problem. Any suggestions?

I am having the same problem. I have a WIFI wep network. If I join the network and LEAVE the wifi turned on no problem (most times). I can turn the ipod on and off. all is well (most times). However, after reading an article on the power drain imposed by the wifi I started turning off the wifi when I was not using it. Major increase in battery life. However, now when I want to use the wifi, I turn it on and it finds the network, and the small key icon disappears. So the network is there but I cannot access the network because the ipod didn't connect securely. I have to remove the network first, turn off the ipod so it is lost, turn the pod back on, and then add it as a OTHER network. Sometimes I have to do this several times and at times I have to turn off the ipod and turn it back on to get the wifi to work properly. HOWEVER, if I leave the wifi ON. I can power ipod on and off without a problem (most times) i.e. it still happens.

  • Does iPad 2 WiFi /3G (AT&T or Verizon) have a sim card slot?

I wonder if iPad 2 WiFi/3G (AT&T or Verizon) has a sim card slot?
As already i have my sim card that i use in my current ipad WiFi/3G & would like to transfer it to the new iPad 2 WiFi/3G (AT&T or Verizon).

I've been having the same yet different issues... I can connect to WiFi at home no problem but I come to work and the iPad 2 can see the WiFi connect but only get the IP address and subnet, nver the router or DNS require to get on line. I have a iPad 1 andhad the same issues but the last iOS update fixed that issue but when I got the iPad 2 same issues arose. I tried for a couple of days getting on work WiFI (WEP encryption for quest/employee web access) and I noticed I had my iPad bluetooth active, no connected. I turned it off and immediiately got online. I doubt most users are having the EXACT same problem as me but this was a very simple solution that fixed my WiFi woes.
    Cheers!

  • What exactly is the advantage of VPN?

I work in an architectural office of about 15 people. We've always had access to our wiki, files and calendars when out of the office.
Currently we have a Standard setup of Leopard Server with the following services: iChat (using just a private local domain), iCal (with all calendars delegated to one another), AFP file server (3 different groups) and Wiki Server.
What exactly would the advantage be to us of VPN, over simply connecting to a file server via "Connect to Server...", accessing our Wiki via the office IP address, and subscribing directly to our calendars from home?

    VPN: Virtual Private Network.
Virtual: implemented without needing specific hardware; uses existing networking hardware and connections. Non-virtual ("real" or "physical") private networks typically involve dragging network wires around or broadcasting signals of your own, or leasing T1 or SONET lines and other such gear from a communications vendor.
Private: A private network is (preferably) difficult to eavesdrop from the open WiFi at the coffee shop, easier to control access. Non-private networks are also known as open networks, and that ftp or telnet or imap/pop password you just entered can be read by others on the same network. That, and the entire contents of the mail messages you have sent and received over the open network are also accessible.
Some private networks are less secure than others. The WEP-based security provided by some WiFi networks is now usually considered to be analogous to a wide-open WiFi; WEP is quite weak, and tools to break it are widely available. WPA is rather better here, and anyone using WEP should move to WPA, or better. (qv: the TJX credit card data exposure was reportedly due to the use of WEP.)
Most VPNs also have some form of authentication; a certificate, smartcard or token card, or other such challenge. Passwords are one of the weakest mechanisms here, but there are VPNs that use just passwords.
+I guess too, there is some additional functionality added. For instance if you're logged into the VPN with a work laptop, presumably if you update your server-based calendar it will update the server as well.+
No. A VPN is and should be assumed nothing more than a network connection. The difference is in the degree of privacy provided. Beyond the encryption and authentication typically inherent, VPNs do not add application-level features over what an open network connection might provide.
An ssh tunnel is a specific form of VPN, and does reasonably well at providing security and at avoiding exposing your password and your data.
Network: as with open networks, VPNs can be used to allow client systems to access a network, or to bridge two or more networks together. VPNs can also provide a reasonable way to manage the connections between these networks, or a client connecting into a network. For the purposes of discussing connectivity, a VPN is another form of a network connection.
