WiFi while traveling

Recently I was at a hotel that used NetAccess for WiFi. This hotel in San Diego had free WiFi and gave me an access password to log on the their WiFi router. After connecting, iIt turns out that you need to scroll down in the terms and conditions window to accept them and to connect. Unfortunately, it appears the window is written in Flash, an iPad no-no. I called the NetAccess technical support number that appeared on the opening web site and they were able to enable my iPad based on the MAC address. For those less technical, the MAC address is located in Settings, About, WiFi Address.
If you run into something similar and give the technical support folks that address, they can enable your iPad.
HTH.

A lot of hotels use third party wireless network providers that have flash sign on pages. I had this problem with two hotels since I have gotten my ipad. (I travel a lot for work).
I finally went and got a Verizon mifi yesterday, so that I will always have a backup plan if I can't get on the hotel's network. It is good to know that some of the providers can enable the devices by phone.
I think the decision to not include flash capabilities in safari will prove to be inconvenient to a lot of us for awhile. I am eagerly awaiting an alternative browser app that will deliver some sort of work around, some sort of flash to html5 transcoding or something.

  • WiFi While Traveling in an RV or staying in a Hotel

    Hi,
I just purchased an Apple TV 2. I hooked it up to my home network and from what I've done with it so far I love it. Although the Netflix movie I wanted to stream last night took about 5 tries before it would bypass the try again later screen, do you get that a lot?
Anyhow! I would like to know if anyone takes their Apple TV 2 with them on trips where they know there is wifi available. I have an RV and most RV parks have WiFi now. Can I take it along as a stand alone device and connect to the RV park WiFi without having to have a computer around for it to stream from? It seems like I would be able to in theory, I'm just wondering if anyone here has done it. Looking forward to hearing back some responses.

    It's certainly a limitation.
I can connect to the free wi-fi with my iPad, Macbook and Mac mini but even if I could connect AppleTV I'm not certain that the provider would actually allow communcation between the devices for security reasons.
I brought a plethora of devices with me to cover all bases and am able to play protected material from my Mac Mini over HDMI without the need for any internet connection - maybe they're all authorised from previous streaming or automatically authorised as the computer is authorised, but to play on AppleTV still requires intenet authorisation it seems (computers connected without internet using a mif-fi device to provide a local wi-fi network) - even Airplay will not output to an AppleTv 2 without an internet connection even if the files play on iPad or computer - again the paying customer loses out due to DRM - had I ripped DVDs of these titles or downloaded piratd copies I would ot have an issue.
One thing I haven't tried yet as MacMini is doing the job, is to connect to free wi-fi using Mini or Macbook, connect to AppleTV using ethernet cable and share internet connection over ethernet - the terms of connection vaguely prohibit connection sharing so I haven't tried.

  • Problem with WiFi while traveling - connects to Hotspot, but cannot open page in Safari

Local (hotel) hotspot requires login - fine, have account.  But Safari only takes me to login page sometimes, other times simply gives "Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding."  Server has not stopped responding, e.g. I can reach it with a laptop.  Problem is Safari refuses to give up on stale connection, start over.  Same problem with iPad.  Same problem with Google browser (different verbiage).  Have tried turning off, on WiFi,  rebooting device.  Any tips on how to get Safari to let go and start over so it gets to local login page?

Found this on another discussion: go to your setting - general - reset - reset network setting
This is a brutal step, should be completely unnecessary, but it seems to work.
Apple needs to fix this - obviously from other discussions, many people are encountering similar problems.

  • Sending iMessages over WiFi while traveling abroad?

I'm currently out of the country and don't have an international data plan. I want to text my boyfriend using iMessage (I have a WiFi connection in the hotel and he also has an iPhone). I know it's free for me to send iMessage texts over WiFi even though I'm in a foreign country, but would he be charged to iMessage me back if he's sending his messages using 3G/data? I don't want to run up his phone bill. Thanks for any help!

  • How can I take my iPhone & iPad backups from my iMac at home with me while travelling using my Macbookair (128Gb SSD) with an ext. HD?

How can I take my iPhone & iPad backups from my iMac at home with me while travelling using my Macbookair (128Gb SSD) with an ext. HD? I want to continue to back up my devices including those of my wife while travelling without using the cloud and not returing home for several weeks.
    Any ideas or solutions?
    Thanks for your help.

You can use any Mac with a recent copy of iTunes to back up an iPhone or iPad. It doesn't have to be the one you usually synch with, so long as you don't let it try to do a synch.
Just take fresh backups on the MBA. As for how to get the backups onto the external drive, I'll have to leave that to others; I've never tried.

  • While traveling in Ireland and riding on hotel WiFi, emails sent from iPhone not always received -- some were, some were not.  All were shown as sent on my iPhone.

While traveling in Ireland last week, I was using my iPhone 5 to access my incoming email and to send email.  All of my outgoing emails are shown as sent but not all were received.  Not a function of whether emails were replies or particular addressees -- some emails to same addressees received, others not.  Help would be appreciated.

That sounds like a local WiFi issue...can you login to the email server of your email provider?  If so, you can check and see if the emails you sent reached the server.
Providers like Verizon, and AT&T, and Comcast in the US have direct login capability for subscribers...there you can check your account activity and see if the emails were received by the server to send on.  The iPhone merely shows you that the email left the iPhone, nothing about what happened after that.

the Wifi storage options are interesting but it seems they only allow to read files from the device on the iPad but not transfer files to the storage device via WiFi.
I'm looking for a possibility to use the iPad for photography while traveling, without the access to a computer.
Shooting photo's in RAW format crates pretty big files that will fill up the iPad's memory pretty fast if you shoot a lot during a (let's say) month long trip.
my idea was to use load the photo's to the iPad so i could view them and sort out any bad ones. then copy them over to the storage device so i can continue using my CF cards for shooting. I have an image thank for copying the photo's directly to the HDD but it would be so sweet to be able to check them on the iPad before hand.
    any suggestions?

Check out pogo plug device, it allows you to upload camera roll via wifi.

  • I will be using public wifi for 3 months while traveling, do I need VPN for security?

I will be using public wifi for 3 months while traveling, do I need VPN software? And is it needed at the receiving end?

As long as you only enter your password in secure web forms, connect to secure mail servers, and don't mind if a stranger is watching which Internet servers you connect to (but can't see what you do with them), a VPN isn't necessary.

  • How do I set up email accounts to send emails while travelling overseas using various wifi locations?

How do I set up email accounts to send and receive
emails while travelling overseas using various wifi locations?

Many ISP provided email accounts limit connections to their outgoing SMTP email servers to only connections coming from their own network. So, if you try to send email when not connected to their network (i.e. when not at home), the connection will be rejected.
If you are using an ISP provided email address, in these circumstances, you'll need to ask your ISP if they provide an "authenticated SMTP connection" so that you can send email via their SMTP server when not actually accessing the internet via their network. You'll need to enter your email account username and password in the Outgoing SMTP server settings and possible configure SSL or outgoing port numbers. Your ISP will be able to advise on this though, as the exact setting vary between ISPs.
By far the best solution though, is to use an email account that is not tied to any particular ISP, such as a GMail account, as these can be used from anywhere, on any network and provide authenticated SMTP as standard.

  • How do I copy MP4 files onto my IPad while travelling?

    Hello all
I picked up my first IPad through work last week, and am still familiarising myself with the device. What I did manage to do is connect it to ITunes on my home computer and copy all of our childrens TV shows onto the device for our daughter to watch, and it all went smoothly.
I have a question regarding this process however. I tend to watch a lot of TV shows, and in most cases I wait until after the season is finished and pick up the boxed set, so that I can watch it when I want, without commercials. What I then do is convert them to (unprotected) MP4 files that I then usually copy to my PS3 to watch them on our TV. Just as a test, I copied a few onto the IPad and they look great, I could easily see myself using this device to watch shows while travelling.
However, our IPad is only 16 gigs, and in longer trips I would probably want to take more shows than that would allow. I also have a 1 Terrabyte portable harddrive though, that I can fit ample amount of shows on.
At the moment I have only connected the IPad to one computer running ITunes, which is my PC at home. However lets assume I was travelling, and had both my external hard drive and IPad. What would be the best solution for copying movies from that external harddrive to the IPad to allow me to watch additional shows?  Unless I'm mistaken, I can have up to 5 computers authorised with my account.  Would it in theory be possible to find a PC, authorise it to my Ipad, copy the files over and then deauthorise that PC?  Or if not, what is the recommended solution?
Apologies if this is common knowledge, I'm still a newbie.

Even though you can have your iTunes account authorized on 5 computers your iPad can only be linked to one computer. If you used another computer to copy your content from your external drive you would have to Restore the iPad with the computer erasing all other data. The process will allow you to backup then Restore to that back up but it will not contain any of the media files you wish to keep on the iPad. This is why it is important to get the most storage on an iOS device you can afford.
You might want to look at something like Kingston's Wi-Drive which is an external drive your iPad can access through wifi. http://www.kingston.com/us/usb/wireless#wid I don't think it has any integration with iTunes but you could put a copy of the videos you wish to take with you then play them on it it's app.

  • My message page is frozen while traveling with an international data plan. Cannot use my messaging. Help?

Message page frozen while traveling in Italy. Have international data plan but cannot get or receive messages. How can I get off frozen page?

You want to call and get the internation data plan.  its 25 dollars for 100 mb.  if you dont buy that plan it is like 20.43 per MB.  Very expesnive.  You have the option to just turn cellular data off and only use wifi.  if you dont buy the global data poackage your going to want to do that because your phone will use data even if your not doing naything.  That 25 dollar data package works for most countrys
