Wifi - why is it necessary?

I didn't buy my ipod touch it was a gift, but I like it.
The necessity to have wifi to connect to the internet through safari seems a waste. I don't intend buying wifi for my PC just so I can run ipod touch - so why can't ipod connect through normal broadband that my PC uses?
This severly limits the machine. I know wifi is so that I can connect anywhere, but if I want to connect at home (example to register - can't get a register connection through my broadband) seems a total waste of computing power.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You don't need to add WiFi to your PC. All you need is a very cheap wireless router connected to your broadband modem. Hardly anyone would use the iPod touch as a mobile internet device if it had to tether itself to either a USB or Ethernet broadband system in the home. When you're out in town WiFi is the only option anyhow. I guess as Apple has shipped WiFi as standard for many years now on all Macs bar the professional Workstations it just makes sense to use the most common technology.
You don't have to have WiFi to enjoy an iPod touch however.

  • Why it is necessary that public class name should  same as filename in java

    hi,
    why it is necessary that public class name should same as filename in java.
    As I know that it is a convention, but I want the information why this convention is made.
    thanx.

    but suppose if i am creating a java file with default access modifire then we do not need to save the file name as a class name.So, your question is "Why does the rule about top-level classes being in a file of the same name apply +only+ to public classes"?
    If it were applied to all classes, then we could never have two top-level classes in the same file. Doing that is generally not a good idea, but it might be useful from time to time. EJP already told you why it applies to public classes, and, since these are the most common by far, it's a fair compromise that it apply to them but not to other classes.
    Was this the reason the original designers did it that way 15 or so years ago? Don't know, don't care, but it's one plausible explanation. Maybe it was just a balance between simplicity and clarity on the one hand, and flexibility on the other.
    It's certainly not something I can see caring that much about, unless you're doing an in-depth history on Java, or writing an in-depth treatise on computer language and compiler theory.

  • Plugin-container.exe : what is it, why is it necessary, can I delete it

    Continued from the "plugin-container.exe : what is it, why is it necessary, can I delete it" thread:
    1) When people say Firefox uses up a lot of CPU/Memory, they are telling the truth. Tools like Task Manager and Process Explorer show you how much CPU/Memory Firefox is using up. Stop calling people liars when they say Firefox is using up X Memory. Stop making baseless accusations like "you're running other programmes that are causing your CPU to skyrocket and Firefox to freeze". Task Manager and Process Explorer don't lie. Take yourself off the thread because you're not helping anyone, you're creating anger and hatred, you're basically trolling. If you have no valid advice to offer, keep your mouth shut and stay away instead of launching into the "you're a liar" nonsense.
    2) Stop typing in caps
    3) Refrain from using profanity and ad hominem attacks
    4) If you claim you're abandoning Firefox for another browser, fine: now get off the board and go away instead of posting inflammatory hatred against Mozilla since you're no longer using Mozilla
    5) Stop attacking and/or ignoring the advice of Mozilla representatives like Morbus
    6) Morbus: the Firefox Safe-Mode advice you frequently dispense is the most rejected advice because most people do not want to mess with their browsers, especially people who are not not knowledgeable about safe-mode, add-ons, disabling, etc. I fully agree that people must learn how to diagnose the problems on their own and find solutions on their own, but not all people are capable of learning how to do that. Computers are easy for many people, but not all people. The Safe-Mode solution appeals to a '''minority '''of people who are comfortable with picking apart their browser and picking apart other things to find solutions, not the majority, who fear making things worse.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == Today 6/22/2010

    7) Stop telling people to remove add-ons and plug-ins and scripts. Firefox was made specifically to enable to build their own browsers. Firefox was made for the purpose of allowing people use all the add-ons and plug-ins and scripts they wanted. No other browser offers that range of add-on/plug-in/script support. Removing the add-ons and plug-ins and scripts eliminates the purpose of Firefox. If Mozilla representatives want to insist that removing add-ons and plug-ins and scripts are the solution, then Mozilla is telling us that its browser is no different from IE or Chrome, in which case Mozilla has given us a reason to stop using Mozilla.

  • Why is it necessary to make the block synchronized while iteratiing

    Why is it necessary to make the block synchronized while iteratiing thru Synchronization Wrappers?
    here is the code sample for same:
    Collection c = Collections.synchronizedCollection(myCollection);
    synchronized(c) {
    Iterator i = c.iterator(); // Must be in synchronized block!
    while (i.hasNext())
    foo(i.next());
    }

    If at the first place I am getting all the methods synchronized by calling
    Collection c = Collections.synchronizedCollection(myCollection);
    that means no two threads can enter the data structure of this collection, I am not getting how ConcurrentModificationException will be thrown while iterating thru this collection?
    Can u please explain in a little depth?

  • Why is casting necessary here?

    hi all, take the following code:
    int i=-20;
    final int j=20;
    final int k=i;
    byte b1= j;
    byte b2= k;
    byte b3= i;after i complied it, i got two errs. at b2 and b3, i solved that by casting.
    but why is casting necessary here in contrast with b1?
    thunx

    You are trying to narrow an int to a byte.
    This is acceptable, but only when the following conditions are met (JLS 5.2):
    1 - The expression is a constant expression of type byte, short, char or int.
    2 - The type of the variable is byte, short, or char.
    3 - The value of the expression (which is known at compile time, because it is a constant expression) is representable in the type of the variable.
    In your example, your assignment to b1 uses a constant expression (j[b], which is final).
    Your assignments to b2 and b3 do not use constant expressions (b3 is assigned from i, which is not final; b2 is assigned from k - which although final, is based on i, which is not).

  • I can not use my itunes on my iphone or ipad unless i am within range of wifi. why??

    Please help
    I run a PA company (Big sound systems) and at events i play music through the system using my ipad or iphone. this has never been a problem until recently. since i updated my OS on my iphone4 and ipad2 i open itunes like normal, select a song and it tells me i can not play the song because it is on my cloud and i am not connected to the internet. as far as i know i never took my music off my phone or ipad and when i plug them in it even tells me space is being taken up on my phone from all the audio stored on it, yet i can not play a single track without connecting to the internet through wifi.
    if i had internet everywhere there wouldn't be a problem but thats just not possible. some of the event i do are in the middle of no where and i cant be without my music. Also i can not use my phone like a personal music player like anyone else would just walking around with earphones because as soon as i go out of wifi range i can not play anything from itunes.
    why did it have to change in the first place,
    please help.

    does that mean I can not buy a movie or tv show  from itunes and watch it on my car tv through my iphone? Does that also mean I can not watch any video even the ones I take via the iphone camera? That makes no sense, f that is true what is the rational? And how come it works from the IPOD?

  • N8 Wifi WHY?!?!!!!

    OK,
    I have a 6GB data plan per month on my N8 but why is it to upload YouTube Videos or download maps from OVI, I HAVE TO USE WIFI?
    Downloading maps fails if there is no connection via Wifi
    Uploading a video to YouTube give the" You need to be using Wifi to upload this video"
    Does anyone know why Nokia would restrict me on uploading?
    Anyway around this?

    It is not a Nokia restriction and probably just the way you have set up the internet connection for Ovi Maps.
    If you go to Settings>Connectivity>Settings>Destinations you will find that your access points can be filed under 3 categories, Internet, WAP services and Uncategorised. Click any one of those and you will find various access points files under each of them. You can move your access points between them by longpressing the access point. Within each category you can assign a priority level. Example, if you want your phone to always use wifi when available and use your data plan when not then move both access point to the same category, then assign a the wifi a higher level of priority.
    Then you start Ovi Maps, goto Settings>Internet>Network destination, then specify the category of access points you want to use. The category chosen whould match the one you set up above,

  • Super SLOOOOW file transfer from MacBook Pro Retina to Time Capsule over WiFi - why?

    So I have been having a search around and it seems like the advice for folks complaining about ludicrously slow wifi transfers from their Mac to their Time Capsule is... to do it wired.
    As you may know, the MacBook Pro Retina does not have a cable Ethernet port. So I have to buy a Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet adaptor (and a cable if I don't already have one) just to perform this basic task? Seems hard to believe.
    MacBook wifi is showing as connected via 802.11n to the Time Capsule and the link speed is showing 217 Mbps in Network Utility.
    So why is it so slow?

    Thank you, LaPastenague - very complete answer!
    How is the old NAS connected to the TC?
    What actual speed are you getting?
    It is important that when you select an option you stop other options from interferring.. ie.. turn off wireless when you do ethernet.
    First, I had the NAS connected to the laptop (Dell XPS M1710, Win7 - (yeah, I know, but it does the job, still)) via USB, which generated about 900KB/S r/w speed,
    then I tried connecting it via LAN to TC, but didn't succeed in getting TC recognize the drive,
    lastly, I connected it via the USB port directly to the TC, and got ~900KB/S r/w speeds again.
    In all scenarios, the laptop was connected via LAN as well (TC's WiFi was not disabled, though).
    Then I read the above thread and tried finding DHCP settings. Found them in the "internet settings" in the airport utility, but not in the "dive settings", so I didn't know what to change there.
    Strangely, the only thing that I changed was the TC-name, taking away a hyphen and a space (from "myname's TC" to "mynamesTC"), which resulted in faster r/w speeds, going from the 900KB/S to 1.5MB/S (still not what I expected).
    Also that any copying of files will be a loop, old NAS--Computer.. Computer--TC
    Got it. Tried to provide a faster connection by directly connecting old NAS to TC via USB, but makes sense.
    Each connection is just as impportant as the other. Plus you can see the computer must handle every packet in a double hop tx, rx tx rx for each one. So using gigabit all the way is vital.
    Will try again connecting old NAS to TC via GB-LAN, and have it recognize it, and provide and update here.
    This is best done in full isolation from internet.. just setup so you can do the copy overnight.
    I was planning on doing several actions of moving files in a session of re-organizing, and am not really keen on waiting 4-6hrs between each step. The old NAS shall host all videos later, as it is recognized by the PS3 when connected via USB, while the TC shall host all photos and music, which I am rather accessing from the laptop's itunes.
    And also to realise lots of very small files can copy extremely slowly.. no matter how fast the connections are.. it is heaps of small files that cause copying to take forever because files are written to the disk and then file allocation tables are filled in for every one. It is why a backup is much faster as files are compressed into single large file. Or like TM using 8KB bands where the file ends are handled differently to normal disk.
    That will have added to the slow-ness of the session last night, as I was copying 25GB of photos which took 6hrs (***). So that would have been faster if I compressed them to .zip before moving? (not because it reduces size, as it barely does, but becuase it puts many small files into one big one?)
    Just moved a 164MB vid from laptop to old NAS (which is still connected to TCs USB port, while laptop to TC via WiFi): result: 1minute40secs @ 1.70MB/S.
    Then moved same vis from laptop to TC: 1minute55secs @ 1.80MB/S (gaining write speed slower that old NAS, therefore taking longer despite higher final speed).
    So, is there any further improvement / setting that I could change (DHCP / NAT) to get to higher r/w speeds, like the 6.75MB/S quoted above?
    Thank you again! MFP

  • I can't open wifi, why?

    I can't touch the Wifi buttom. So i can't go on wifi at all, why?

    Follow the steps here: iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim .
    If these don't work then your iPod probably has a hardware problem.

  • I have an ipad mini 16G wifi - why can't I send SMS txt msg and only imessages?  On the settings, there is no option for "send SMS when imessage not available" like on my iphone.

    Why can't I send SMS messages from my ipad mini 16g wifi?

    Even when your iPad Mini has a 3G cellular modem onboard, the iPad Mini still can NOT send or receive SMS Text messages.
    The 3G modem is only used for a internet data connection and has no software to either send or receive SMS text messages even though the hardware is available.
    I can confirm this with the iPad Mini iOS6.1 with 3G cellular modem.
    Apple Support has this issue currenlty under investigation - you can follow this issue here:
