WiFi works at home not abroad

I have a 2g iPod Touch. I verified that I coudl connect via wifi from home and from a public wifi location before leaving on a trip to UK. However once I left I could never get net access on nay public or pasword wifi spot.
I could get connected according to the wifi status but trying to run any application, Safari, Mail or Skype got an error of either continual connecting with nothing or an invalid argument.
I tried resetting network connection while I was gone and never did get anything to work.
I'm back home now and my iPod is working on my home wifi network.
Any idea what I can do to fix this for next trip?

Did you tap Settings > WiFi > and the blue ">" next to the network name? Do you have a legitimate IP address (not 169.x), a full subnet mask, router IP and DNS IP addresses? If you don't try "renewing lease" while you are on that screen.
The errors you say you are receiving are not the kind that I would normally associate with a bad or incomplete network connection. When is the last time you restarted or reset your iPod?

You either need WiFi or Cellular (or both). If you have neither, you can't connect to the internet.
Most people use WiFi at home and Cellular while away from home, or connect to public WiFi networks where there are some.

Wifi working but safari not searching..

I'm having the same issues. Started when I upgraded iphone 4S and ipad1 to 5.1.1. Wife's iphone 4g on 4.4.2 has been ok. I've forgot the network on both devices and restored the iphone, none of which changed the issue. I've upgraded to ios 6 on the iphone 4s, problem still persists.
One thing that will help for a time: go to your router and change the wireless control channel. When I first did this I got full connectivity for about 48 hours... and now the problem is back. I'm now changing the wireless control channel every 12 hours, which is a pain but at least keeps me connected. I've tried a few other solutions that are out there and that has been the best one so far.
to do this on a motorola router: type 192.168.0.1 in your address bar.
username: admin and password:motorola if you have not changed the factory defaults.
Click on the word "wireless" and look for the "control channel" field. This may be set to auto or to 1, try changing it to 6 or 11 (preferred) or any other channel.
The control channel can cause static in the wireless system IF there are several networks nearby that are on the default setup.
There is a fair bit of buzz about this issue out there, some other things I've seen:
This is a hardware issue. Go to the store and have your wifi antenna checked, some users reporting that they get free replacement devices.
Check against other wifi networks that require a password (this is next for me). Logon to those networks and surf until your wifi stops. If your wifi connects to the internet but stops responding, then this is a software (or hardware) issue and apple needs to step up. Some are claiming this to be the case.
IF you connect and stay connected/on the internet on another password protected wifi, then the issue is with your router. this is where things get cute.
Comcast may tell you to update your firmware. Motorola may tell you that your cable provider is the only one who can push through firmware updates. Comcast may tell you that you are not in an area that is being updated. It's unclear if they say that to all customers, or just those who have purchased cable modems and aren't renting them from comcast.

My wife has just had a new iPad and while Wifi works fine with it at home, at work it will not connect to the Wifi despite the correct password being entered. The 'waiting wheel' simply goes round and round next to the Wifi network attempting connection.

When your device is trying to connect to the work Wi-Fi network, go to Settings > Wi-Fi > then tap on the name of the Netowrk that she is having trouble with. Then tap on forget this network. Let the device attempt to connect again and make absolutely sure she is trying to connect to the work network and not a nearby network, then make absolutely sure the password is entered correctly.

From your description, it sounds like you may have been using the SMS feature of Continuity in iOS 8. If this is the case and it has somehow become misconfigured after a recent change, you may find the information and steps outlined in the following articles helpful:

Since I downloaded 7.0.4 onto my iPad 4th gen. the wifi has been unstable.

Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

How can apple put out such an update that causes so much grief and inconvenience to hundreds of people. Not to mention risking lives with Bluetooth kits not working...outraged!!!!!!

First, grow up. Just because YOUR phone isn't working, doesn't mean Apple put out bad software. I've not had any difficulty, nor has anyone else I know. And just how is Apple risking lives with Bluetooth kits not working? It's YOUR decision to talk on the phone or text and drive. Not Apple's.
We're users here, volunteering our time to help others. Posts like yours, which are whiny and ranting, simply means we're likely to ignore you and not provide you with any help. Not to mention, it makes you look absolutely foolish.
Further making you look foolish is the fact that you haven't even asked a technical support question, nor have you provided anyone here with any troubleshooting steps you might have taken, including those recommended in the user guide.

Yesterday got wifi in my home and after nearly 4 months starting learning how my IPad Mini functions. Later today I tried to get back on but was stopped, with a requirement of a passcode (not a password). I used the one I knew and was kicked off.

After having trouble getting back onto my IPAD Mini this afternoon, because I apparently did not have what was required a passcode ??
I was putting in my previously decided on password. I had to use my CHROME machine to communicate with Apple, and because there seemed to be some confusion about my identity when I had gone on the Apps sections of my IPAD, and when communicating with Apple on my CHROME machine, I went ahead and changed my password. Going back to my IPAD to log on, using the new information it again kicked me out - this time saying I couldn't get back on for one hour.
The only other passcode info I have is because we now have WiFi in our home -- for the first time since I purchased my IPAD at Christmas. Today was the first time I had been able to get into the system and see some of the functions work - email, maps and then APPS and that's when it went all hinky.
When will this all get cleared up?

The iPad is looking for a 4 digit passcode that you used to lock the device. Did you set a 4 digit code when you set up your iPad? You need to enter that code in order to unlock it. If you don't know the code, you will have to restore the iPad in order to unlock it.

Thanks for the swift reply, I have been looking online and a loose plug seems to be somewhat of an issue with many, I hope mine is actually a problem and not what others are experiencing. It's taken me this long to even reach out for the simple fact I HATE being a complainer but this is just horrible.
