Wifi works on iPhone but not MacBook with more bars!

so, sitting in the same spot my MacBook Pro has 4/4 bars but the wifi only works for five seconds at a time (not literally but it feels like it), then I have to disconnect and reconnect. My iPhone has 2/3-3/3 bars and the wifi works great! why is this? Shouldn't the MacBook have better reception as its bigger/has more power? Why does it show more bars than the iPhone but hAbe a worse connection?

Start up in Recovery mode. In the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. While in Recovery, you'll have no access to your saved bookmarks or passwords, so make a note of those before you begin, if they're needed for the test.
Test. After testing, restart as usual and post the results.

  • WiFi in Asia works on iPhone but not Macbook Pro

I am currently traveling around Asia and I have my Macbook Pro and iPhone with me.  I have had no problems connecting to WiFi networks with my iPhone (currently typing this message with it on my hotel's WiFi).  However, my Macbook Pro has had endless issues.  Sometime it works, but often it doesn't.  The most common issue is that it gets a self assigned IP address and can't connect to the internet.  It can usually find and connect to the WiFi network, but from there things get dodgy.  As I said, it sometimes works fine.  I would say it works on 1 out of every 3 networks that I try.
So far I have tried the following:
Renewing DHCP Lease (without client ID and with made up client ID)
    Disabling firewall.
Turning off wifi and them back on.
    Restarting computer.
    Deleting WiFi service and recreating.
    Creating new "location".
    Repairing permissions.
    Using different login account.
Manually entering TCP/IP settings copied from iPhone.
    "Forgetting network" and rejoining.
None of the above has helped, except that one time renewing DHCP lease with a made up client ID did the trick.
I have the summer 2012 MacBook Pro 13" with OS 10.7.5 installed.
Any help would be very appreciated.  :)

It doesn't seem like anybody is going to respond to this thread, but I guess I will keep updating it just in case (and perhaps if I ever find a solution it will be helpful to others).
Since my last post I have been to about 12 hotels in both Thailand and Cambodia.  This issue has continued with some variations:
    * At 3 of the hotels the wifi on my MacBook Pro actually worked!  It seemed to work ok, with minimal speed issues.
    * At 6 of the hotels the wifi did not work on my MacBook Pro, but worked fine on my iPhone.
    * At 3 of the hotels the wifi worked on my MacBook Pro but was PAINFULLY slow (to point where I couldn't upload photos, could barely check facebook, etc).  In fact, it was so slow that I basically gave up using the internet with my MacBook Pro and used my iPhone instead (which had normal speeds).
I have continued to search the internet for solutions and nothing has helped yet.  It seems like this is a common issue with newer MacBook Pros, especially with OS Lion.
I have also concluded that this isn't necessarily an Asia specific issue.  It seems like an issue with my MacBook Pro and using various WiFi routers with various setups.  Some work, but most do not.  Unfortunately I do not have access to any of the routers that I am using, so changing router setup is not an option.

  • Netflix works on iphone but not MacBook Pro?

I'm a new Apple Macbook pro guy.  Switched from Window PCs after getting my iphone.  I downloaded the Netflix for iphone - works great, but Netflix on my MAC wants Silverlight.  Is that secure?  I heard you also have to enable JavaScripts - Java is secure, but JavaScripts are not?
Old guy needs some help :-)

  • FaceTime works on iPhone but not macbook..? HEEELP.

Facetime makes/recieves calls as per usual with iphone, but Macbook pro is unsuccessful- says 'connecting' and rings without ever getting through/does not recieve incoming facetime from other devices.

    Hello emilia_,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with FaceTime.  It sounds like you have isolated the issue to your MacBook Pro.
You may be experiencing this issue due to an expired certificate that can be updated by running the software updates on your MacBook Pro.  I recommend reviewing the following article:
Unable to make or receive FaceTime calls after April 16, 2014
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5419
If your software is up to date, I recommend continuing to troubleshoot with the steps in the following article:

  • Wifi works at home but not when away from home

My Wifi works at home but not when away from home, what is wrong?  I thought with a phone plan I didn't need to have a wifi connection.

You either need WiFi or Cellular (or both). If you have neither, you can't connect to the internet.
Most people use WiFi at home and Cellular while away from home, or connect to public WiFi networks where there are some.

  • IMessage working on iPhone but not on MacBook Pro or iPad Air

I Am getting increasingly frustrated that iMessage is working on my iPhone but not on iPad or MacBook Pro.  I have tried settings system preferences, taking jabber off etc but still no joy. It's been two weeks now, can anybody help me please

    HI,
In System Preferences > Internet Accounts  you can enable some email type addresses (they may or may not be actual email addresses) to be able to join various services.
Therefore a Google ID  can be activated  for Messages as Google allow Google Mail IDs to use their GoogleTalk Service which in turn  happens to be a Google Server.
At Facebook (if you have an account there) you can enable Chat which gives you a Facebook Chat ID  which also runs off a Jabber server (the ID is similar to your regular ID  but has chat in the name and does not work with the Mail App)
Apple Issued IDs (@mac.com @me.com and @icloud.com ending IDs) will work as AIM valid Screen Names  in Messages until the 30th June at least (Then @mac.com and @me.com names will stop).
The iOS version of Messages will send either iMessages  to Apple IDs and iPhone Numbers or in some cases will send SMS to other phones including iPhones that may not have enough service coverage to do iMessaging.
Of course people may use their Google ID as their Apple ID and use it in the Messages app on the Mac which in turn may mean it is the same on the iOS device.
The same can be done with  Yahoo ID.
This means the email IDs from both those services could be used as a Messages account anyway, the iMessages ID as the Apple ID and be active for Mail in Internet Accounts.

  • Just bought an Epson 2540 Printer, connects with iPhone but not Macbook Pro

I am able to print from my iPhone but not my Macbook Pro. Wireless test page worked fine. Turned on Sharing option, turned off firewall, and still does not connect. This is very frustrating, please help

You may have to visit the Epson website and make sure your printer has drivers updated for Mavericks:

Updating the drivers through this link should fix your issue. Post if there's any problem.

  • I have air printer that works on iPhones but not iPad 2

I have air printer that works with both iPhones but not with iPad2

Just to build on red_menace's answer a bit...
    set MyText to do shell script "ps -A | grep '[M]ac VNC 2.1.app' | awk '{print $5}'"
    log "MyText=" & MyText
set content of text field "Dir" of front window to MyText
The log command will write the results of the "do shell script" to Xcode's run log window. If you see the correct output there then you know that part is working correctly and the problem is in the way you're trying to insert the string into the text field. Maybe "Dir" doesn't match the name you've given your text field in IB? Or maybe your text field is contained within another view, such as an NSBox or an NSTabView?
Also, I guess "of front window" should work in AppleScript Studio but I always give my windows AppleScript names in IB and then explicitly specify the window in my scripts. Like this:
set content of text field "Dir" of window "MyWindow" to MyText

  • I've updated one of my contacts and the entry is corrected on my iMac and my iPhone, but not MacBook.  Why not?

I've updated one of my contacts (to correct their email address) and the correction was made on my iMac (where I made the correction) and my iPhone, but not on my MacBook.  All three devices are on the "cloud"...

but not on my MacBook.  All three devices are on the "cloud"...
On the Macbook switch Contacts off then back on in System Preferences > iCloud then restart the Mac.

  • IMessage working on iPhone but not on MacBook Pro or iPad

I've been working on this issue for several days to no avail. I've even worked through it with multiple technicians on AppleCare (and they actually made the problem worse). I cannot send any messages via iMessages on my Macbook and...in the process of troubleshooting it, lost the ability to send imessages on my macbook. My iPhone (even when the only thing it is connected to is wifi) works fine. I'm using the most up-to-date version of Mavericks. I'm using the most up-to-date version of iOS. The only thing that the technicians and I could figure out to spark this had to do with 2-step authentication. Has anyone else successfully resolved this issue before?

  • Airport Express: Wifi works for MacbookPro, but not iPad or iPhone? Defective device?

    Hi All,
Just got a brand new Airport express installed, and the wifi works perfectly fine with my macbook pro, but for some reason it does not work with my mobile devices.
My iPhone and iPad both work on other wifi networks. They are able to connect to the wireless network I set up, but there is not internet connectivity.
Do I have a defective device? Is there something else I can do to troubleshoot?
    Thanks in advanced

  • Outgoing mail server will work on Iphone but not Mail on Macbook

My POP account will send mail on my iphone no problem, but on the mail program on my macbook it times out. All the account information is identical. The mail program keeps telling the server does not support port 995, but on the Iphone it does. I have tried changing the port but it still won't work. Suggestions please!

misilulu, outgoing mail uses the SMTP protocol on ports, 25, 587 (for submission only) and, in the case of SMTPS, port 465 (rarely used and deprecated).
The POP is used for incoming mail on ports 110 or, in the case of POP over SSL, 993.
If all the settings between your iPhone and your MacBook are the same and you are having problems sending outgoing email on your MacBook it is most likely because you are using the wrong port. If you are using port 25 then it is most likely that your ISP is blocking that port for all mail servers except their own. If that is the case try the mail submission port 587. If that doesn't work then try 465 as a last resort.

  • ICal syncs Google calendar with iPad and iPhone but not MacBook Air

    Hi there,
Sorry to post another thread about syncing issues, but the solutions posted in the ones I looked at didn't quite solve my problem, so I'm wondering if I'm having an issue that's specific to the way I've set things up with my devices?
I created a Google account for the sole purpose of having a Google calendar that I could share with my Dad. We both access this Google calendar through iCal.
My Dad generally checks or posts updates using iCal on his iPad and iPhone. Meanwhile, I'm using iCal on my MacBook Air, which FWIW is also running Snow Leopard. (I don't have an iPad or iPhone - this is my only means of accessing the calendar.)
Any change he makes on the calendar will show up on both of his devices, but not mine. Any change I make will not show up on his devices.
I logged into the Google account in a web browser (Chrome, FWIW) and checked the calendar through the same browser - all of his changes aren't showing up on it, but mine are.
I had my Dad reload the same Google calendar in his devices (i.e. delete the account and add it back again) and confirmed he's using the right Google address and password. This doesn't do anything to solve the problem.
What else am I missing? It's a little frustrating trying to fix this because my Dad's in another state so I don't see him that often, and even though I taught him how to use an iPad and an iPhone, he's still not the most computer literate person, so talking him through this is a little tricky.

On the MBPro and the iMac open System Preferences > iCloud
Switch Calendars off then back on.
Give iCloud a few minutes to re sync the data.

  • Wifi works on laptop but not on Ipad

My WiFi works on my MacBook but not on my Ipad/Iphone.  I use Airport by Apple for my WiFi.  Any ideas?

    See if anything here helps:http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
Plus you might get better support in an iOS or iPad or Wi-Fi forum in the Apple Support Communities. This does not sound like a Mavericks-related problem.

  • Music works on iPhone but not on iTunes

A really good chunk of my music doesn't work on iTunes anymore - I'll try to play it but get the message that iTunes can't find the file. It definitely still works on my iPhone, but I'm afraid to sync because I'm worried that what music does work on the iPhone will stop working when it syncs with iTunes.
What can I do to get the music that works on my phone back onto iTunes? I probably haven't synced the two since maybe the holiday season; I don't remember how long this has been happening, but it's not new.
    Thank you in advance!

I figured out how to remedy this last night. I had to pull my music off of my iPhone since it was no longer on my hard drive -- I used a free program called [Senuti|http://www.fadingred.org/senuti> to transfer the music (note: you have to download the Beta, which is linked at the bottom of the page, for it to work with an iPhone).
The program's website has instructions on how to do the transfer without your phone syncing to your computer (which might delete the music from your phone that's missing in iTunes).
Senuti works by figuring out which music is already on your computer, and copying any music that isn't already there. The problem with this is that all of your music is listed in iTunes even though the files aren't there, so Senuti won't copy anything without some extra steps first.
I had to delete all the songs in my iTunes library (from within iTunes -- and make sure you choose to *keep the files* on your hard drive).
Then in iTunes, I chose *File >> Add To Library...* (or Command + O). By default my iTunes Music folder was already chosen, but you might have to navigate to it and then click "Open."
This will add the files that you do have back into your library. After this, use Senuti and it will copy over all of the missing files from your iPhone to your computer.
