Wiggle Text in Motion?

I'm just trying to make silly looking text wiggle (or jiggle). Kind of like if you would hand draw each word and redraw every 2 frames or so. So that the text looks "nervous".
I'm sure there must be an easy way to do it in Motion.
I've got Motion 3, by the way.
Thanks.

I'm thinking, Mark, that there's no way to cause the text to jiggle using the Wriggle behavior. I'm guessing that wireduck wants something like Squigglevision™ used on Dr. Katz, etc...
I've done up a project for my book, but I'm limited in how much I can post of it online.
I call it WobbleVision and it looks like this:
Wobble Vision
What I can do is tell you I used a cellular generator with tiny particles and a sharp edged gradient, made it 4 frames long, clone layered it, set the end condition of the clone layer to pingpong, then dragged it the length of my project. Then I used my "inking" group (letters and outlines) as a mask for the cloned cellular generator, applied a slight Gaussian blur and a threshold. This causes the particles to "clump" together and the ping-ponging effect makes the lines wobble like a looped redraw.
I'm sorry I can't be more specific, but I hope that'll give you enough to get started.
post back,
Patrick

  • How can I create transparent animated  text with Motion and Final Cut Pro?

    Hi all,
I am trying to replicate an effect that a previous video editor did in a project, but I can't contact them.
They made animated text in Live Type, and saved it as a QT movie. When this text is placed over existing video in the FCP project, the text is "transparent", basically it acts like text created in FCP (You can see the background image behind the text, like through the middle of the letter "o").
I have made some animated text in Motion, but when I save it as a QT movie, and bring it into FCP, the whole 1280x720 screen is covered by this movie, and I have to crop it so it does not cover the background image. It is all black except for the text. And of course the text is not on a transparent layer. Any ideas how I can create this effect with animated text? I've tried messing with transparency and overlay settings, nothing seems to work.
Running latest version of Final Cut Studio...
    Thanks
    Dave

Just bring the Motion (.motn) project into FCP and lay it over your clip.
The QT you're exporting has to carry the alpha channel (animation codec, million+ colors), but don't waste your time/disk space with that. Just bring the motion project into FCP.

  • Making 3D Text In Motion 4 ?

I have seen a Creative Cow tutorial for making 3D text in Motion 3.
    http://library.creativecow.net/articles/wigginspeter/3dtext.php
It involves a rather complex workaround to get a simulated 3D effect.
Is there an easier and quicker way to produce 3D text in the new Motion 4?
I have studied the appropriate parts of the manual but as usual they are fairly meaningless to me and anyone else who is not already an expert.
Are there any tutorials, written or video, on the web or is the whole technique so simple it could be described in a few sentences?

That you tube tutorial is the same basic concept as the one on creative cow. In fact, he wrongly calls it "true 3d text" which is obviously isn't. It's really only a bunch of tightly stacked 2D planes. The look of the text breaks down when viewed on edge, but for a work around it's very handy. I use it a lot myself.
However, for "TRUE 3D text", you require a "true" 3D program, or else a plug-in like Invigorator or Boris' Continuum.

  • Jagged Text from Motion to FCP5

Hi.. still having trouble with jagged text from Motion 2.1.2 to FCP 5.1.2 (OSX 10.4.8), PAL DV 720 x 576. Would very much appreciate some insight. I have done a butterfly animation with some lense flares and text. Concept is butterflies come in from off screen and land on attractor to reveal text message with lense flare behind. Views great in Motion on fit to screen, resolution fine. But import as .mtn to FCP and text very disappointing, very noticeably having trouble with resolution, even noticeable on Viewer and Canvas, but really awful in full screen Digital Cinema Desktop Review because the text is so obviously not 576 lines. Something is happening in the import to destroy it despite trying everything I could see in this forum. I can actually count the lines on full screen, enough to estimate I am only getting approx 230 vertical lines instead of 576.
In both Preferences/Presets and Project Properties PAL I have set Broadcast SD 720 x 576, Pixel Aspect Ratio PAL D1/DV 1.07 , Lower (Even), 25 fps. Under Project Properties I have additionally tried 16 bit, and under Render, set anti-aliasing to Best, and tried switching on and off Dithering, and also increased motion blur to 50. I have also switched off interlacing (to None) in both Motion and FCP as one forum comment suggested. In FCP I import the clip as a .mtn file, and change properties to Premultiplied Black and Lower/Even line order prior to dragging into Viewer and then Canvas. But the Motion text already looks jagged in both these screens before I even render in the timeline. I learned a while back under Avid XPress Pro to give text gentle movement diagonally in order to create the illusion of higher resolution than if motionless. But once in FCP, it "wobbles" very noticeably as the application attempts to blur the distinction between the 230 vertical lines on the screen. As I mentioned above, it plays perfectly in Motion on a full screen, with no obvious degradation in vertical resolution, but it's very disappointing once in FCP.
In FCP I have tried just about every setting, but nothing so far addresses this problem. The main settings are 720 x 576 CCIR 601/DV PAL (5:4) Pixel Aspect Ratio CCIR 601 (720 x 576). I've been careful to also check Sequence Settings in addition to User Prefs, Audio & Video Settings and also System Settings. Under Sequence Settings/Video Processing I have tried RGB, YUV 8 Bit and high precision YUV in case that made a difference. I also did several exports to Quicktime .mov, including trying Lossless + Alpha, but no difference, and in any case that work around loses ability to update on the fly if something is chnaged in Motion.
Perhaps I have missed something obvious. I would very mcuh appreciate any assistgance before I go back and delete the text from Motion and do it in FCP instead. I really hope tht others have found solution which works within Motion. I have enjoyed crteating the animations and it will be a great product if I can do the text within Motion and export without loss to FCP.
    Thanks heaps...

Thank you so much for all your replies and interest in my problem - very helpful. I have just come up for air (after several long nights of editing) and the project went out on time, RUN LIVE FROM MY MBP. Your replies saved me a lot of time, pointing out that the resolution was actually ok (for SD), but I just wasn't seeing it on FCP because it was only showing one field, and scaled at that. I firstly tried playing back with the Canvas settings suggested by Mark and it appeared as smooth as it did within Motion. Then I tried viewing on an external monitor via Firewire - all resolution great (at least for SD).
Typically I publish on DVD, but the above tests gave me enough confidence to print to DV tape as a backup (and I loved the user interface - so easy to add bars and tone etc). But I took the risk of running my MBP live at the event, complete with my SATA RAID ) drives and the M-Audio 1418, which I found worked really nicely daisy chained off my DSR-11 deck. This produced far better sound for the live event and gave me enough comfort that I could always run directly off the DSR11 if any of my computer gear failed. The second advantage was that it allowed me to cue precisely synchronised with the live drama, from which the butterflies flew onto the screen - exactly on time as the talent opened the gift box on stage. If you've tried to cue from dvd or dv deck you'll know what I mean. Some consumer dvd players go to sleep if the standby period is too long, and the DSR11 creeps along frame by frame to save tape wear, which can really get in the way of live events. Also, I foudn that the DSR11 needs to be cued at time code prior to the intended start point in order to allow adequate sound buffering.
But with my MBP set up - it was the easiest incorporation of video in to a live event that I had ever done. It worked flawlessly - all I had to do was hit the MBP space bar as the talent guestured with her hand out of the gift box onto the screen - butterflies flying out exactly on time.
    Thanks again everybody.

  • Skewed text in motion menu

Hey all. I have a motion menu where the art director has the txt built on screen on a skewed angle. So the text looks like its angled 3d into the page slightly. Its subtle but creates a nice visual effect.
The problem is the square boxes that encase the overlay highlight (shape to the left of each text) and button text itself can't extend over the entire text because of the skewed angle of it. Not a big deal for a DVD player with just up and down functionality needed, but for a computer with mouseovers, its an issue.
Is it possible to have invisible buttons that when rolled over or "selected" it actually toggles the hightlight state of a different button.
Hope that makes sense. I don't believe its possible but I thought I would ask. Maybe there's a way to script the button state in some way (cross platform).
    Thanks!
    Fish

    hi,
well it depends what you want to do with the text, but if you make the text in Motion it will be vector based so you have more control over resizing and you can use parameter based animation presets on it. If you make it in photoshop first it will rasterised, so you have no control on editing it, resizing, changing font, and you cant use the behaviours

  • Sending text to Motion does nothing but open a new file

I'm editing in FCP and created a text object, carefully placing it in exactly the right position. I right click on the text in the timeline and choose "Send to Motion" but all it does is open a new file. Seems to me it should have actually "sent the text" to Motion as it implies. Did they really not include this feature? Otherwise, its pretty darn meaningless.
Now it seems like I have to re-typeset the text, and go back and forth until I get the placement right again. So much for simplified workflows!

Your fundamental approach to this is wrong.
Tom has already pointed out that Motion is a graphics and text animation tool (amongst other things).
If your point of reference for positioning text is based on the content of the video track below it -send the video clip to Motion and apply the text there, where you can also apply any number of effects to it. Motion has access to exactly the same typefaces that FCP has and a few more in the form of "LiveFonts".
If you wish to have the animated text as a separate element, you can simply delete the video from the background layer in Motion once the positioning and timing has been established. If it needs to be tweaked or changed completely, simply right click it on the FCP Timeline and choose Open in Editor. This will launch Motion with the text project loaded automatically.
So consider it a suggestion for future versions of FCS. (If these posts filter up to the right people!)
They don't. Apple Discussions participants are all users, just like you.

  • Blurring of text once motion file is imported to FCP

I've been experiencing this problem for a while now. I guess this could have been posted in the motion forum as well. When I create a simple text screen (black solid background) in Motion it looks as it should, but when I import that same file into FCP the text seems to lose a lot of quality and becomes blurred. Sometimes the quality is so bad that the crosses on T's and the dots on I's are not visible!
Both motion & fcp projects are set to 25fps. When I open Motion to start a new project I normally leave it to default (pal dv i think)
I'm sure this can easily be corrected so if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.
    Alex

Still receiving a number of Motion to FCP problems.
Not only is the text blurring when imported into FCP but motion files with for instance a particle emitter/behaviour (such as stars moving towards frame) is taking nearly 2 hours to render & even then when i go to play the file in fcp the timeline freezes with a 'dropped frames' pop up appearing.
    Help?!

  • Creating 3D text in Motion 4

    Hi,
I am new to Motion. I have Motion 4 as part of the Final Cut Studio package. Hopefully, this is not too much of a newbie question:
I would like to create a 3D phone number that slides and rotates up in a commercial. I combed the web for tutorials. I watched one several times but the adding a camera part has me perplexed. I made a QuickTime movie of a Final Cut Pro project because the project has mattes that can't be sent to Motion. I opened the QT file in Motion 4. I added a camera, created the text and added a replicator. All good but when I go to slide and twist the text, the whole video imported from FCP moves. I want to keep the QT file in 2D and the text in 3D. I toggled the 3D/2D switch in Motion and couldn't ge it to work.
Do I need to assign the text to a separate group to animate in 3D? If yes, how do you do this? Is there a clearer tutorial that any of you know of that covers this?
Would appreciate any assistance as I am very much stuck!!!!
    Mike

    Mike,
Take a look at this tutorial to see if it helps.

  • Best way to edit text in Motion 5?

I am using Motion 5 and a Template (from Motion VFX), and had trouble editing the text in this one text field. I couldn't just click in the Canvas and edit the text; it would just create another text box.
I am trying to get out of the habit of just clicking on the canvas, and I want new ways to edit text.
I searched and I found one way. I would use the "Find and Replace" tool (Command and F), and then search for the text string, and have it edit it. Is this the best way in everyone's opinion? Are there other ways I can edit text fields? Any tips?
    Thanks,
    Craig G from DC

Select the Text "layer" in the layers column; select the Text tab in the inspector; select the Format button at the top and change the Text in the Text field at the bottom.
BTW, that text field is publishable for FCPX from the disclosure triangle that appears when you mouse over that space with the "Text" header.

  • Scrolling text from motion too fast in fcp

    Help!
I tried using motion 4 for scrolling text but it scrolls too fast... it scrolls perfect speed in motion  but when I open it up in fcp 7.0 it goes faster.
my sequence settings match for fcp and motion 4.
I have tried auto, custom and fixed .
I have played with scroll rate mulitplier
I have shortened and lengthened the timeline
I have gone to some video's on setting this up i.e. vtc.com/products/AppleMotion4/Text/90443 and other videos... nothing I do seems to slow it down,.
    Thank you for your assistance

    Hey Michael,
Yes frame rates are the same.

  • Is there a zoom in for text in motion?

I am trying to start my text off small and have it grow bigger like zooming into the text. I tryed doing this with the behaviors and it looked a little glotchy. Any suggestions?

You can do this a number of ways, but always start with large text and then shrink it down.
Two ways (or even more maybe) of doing it
    1) Use a camera to move on the Z axis
    2) Scale the containing layer of the text from say 10 to 100% with the text set at 288 al the way
Don't animate the font size, it will produce shaky results.

  • Can't find 'displace' text in Motion 5?

Can't change settings text: font, size...

Not sure what you mean by displays, but if you click on any text item then go to the inspector, and the text sub-inspector you will see a whole bunch of ways to customize your text.

  • HT201109 Final Cut Pro 10.1 crashes with Motion 5.1 custom Scrolling text and Graphics titles

    Dec 29, 2013 1:33 PM
found out why Final Cut 10.1 won't load my custom titles without crashing. When scrolling text in Motion 5.1 if you ad a graphic to scroll with the text Final Cut 10.1 will crash. If I remove the graphic in Motion and then load it into Final Cut 10.1 it will work.
So Graphics and scrolling do not work. The graphics are .jpg, .png, .tiff, .psd. I don't know how to fix it. Hopefully someone out there does.

Thanks Tom for the advice. I have four external hard disks, all of them formatted with Mac OS Extended Journaled. On all devices (2TB) I have more than half free space. They are connected either with Thunderbolt or USB3 cables. Different manufactures:  LaCie, Toshiba, WD and Samsung. I face the same crash problem if I connect a UBS drive 16GB or a any other device to the USB ports including the Sony Video camera connected with a USB1 cable. Same problem on ALL my computers! To work properly, I have to disconnect all USB devices and work only with internal hard disks. I also tried to format the MacbookPro (erasing the partitions with a new installation) but I have the same problem. I really lost hope...

  • Text is slowing down Motion work flow

I've been having a problem with text in Motion 3 for awhile now, but it's gotten a lot worse all of a sudden. Lately, when I work with text, navigating around the different menus and adjusting the size/tracking/leading/color/etc. of a single word is stalling the software quite a bit. If I work with still images or video within Motion, everything seems to work great, but working with text is becoming unbearable.
I should note that since FCP can't product gradient text, I typically create the text in Motion to export as a PNG file to import into FCP.
Can anyone offer me assistance in correcting this issue? Thank you!

Make sure your render quality is set to Normal instead of Best, unless you are getting the text very close to the camera, or scaling up very large - that will make a difference. Use Draft while working, and render at Normal. Or don't render at all - just bring your Motion project into FCP - no reason to render anything.

  • Text animation grinds Motion to a near-halt

I have a blank canvas, onto which I animate some text. A rolling credit list like at the end of a movie. Time slows right down. The text animates correspondingly slowly.
I then delete the text object and layer. Time moves as it should.
    What is going on?

Text slows Motion down - the more glyphs, the more it slows it down. Try changing your resolution and quality levels to speed things up.
