Wii + iMAC = : (

I love my Wii and I love my Mac, but man am I frustrated!
I know there are serveral posts concerning the subject of connectivity, but the solutions that are working for some are not working for me. I believe I must have the AX configured incorrectly. Any help would be appreciated.
I'm using a duo-core imac in my office room with dsl service and an airport express which is 20ft. away in my living room. I am able to stream music to my stereo in there.

So that's the breakdown on the AX, as for the Wii...
I get a selection of wireless networks to choose from, and mine (PANDA) is the strongest.
When I check for connection, I get the everpopular 5 digit error code. 3 different numbers, all 5 digit numbers, though.
I imagine there's got to be a solution for me somehow! The proximity of the Wii and the AX is about 2 feet, so I don't think the possition is the problem.
Also, with my AX, I've never gotten the light to be green at all. Am I correct in understanding that green means a good connection? If so, I've never ad one. Flashing amber is OK for music, but not the web, I guess.
Thanks all, and I can't wait to be one of those people to experience the joy of the successful hook-up.

Ves_Paul, Welcome to the discussion area!
Are you using your iMac's Internet Sharing to create a wireless network? If so:
You can not use WDS since the iMac's Internet Sharing doesn't know how to do WDS.
You can configure your AirPort Express (AX) to join as a wireless client. Follow the directions in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.
Several threads have indicated that a Wii can not connect to the internet by connecting to a Mac's Internet Sharing service. Apparently there is some port (or ports) required by the Wii that are not handled by Internet Sharing.

  • Imac 24" with wii and ps3

I'm looking at getting the new 24" imac.
    Questions:
    1. is it possible to run a wii and ps3 through the imac without additional hardware?
    2. If not, is it best to use a hd scaler like the gefen hd mate scaler to connect the devices to the imac or are there alternatives?
    3. will the imac display give good reproduction of HD media (ie blu ray through the ps3)?
I'm aware of the elgato eyetv solution but want to avoid the tv route to avoid paying the tv licence fee (don't have a tv or any real desire to get one if I can otherwise spend the licensing fee on a better specced machine).
    Cheers

    Hello,
There is no video input on the iMac. I've never seen anything but Standard Defintion video input devices via USB/Firewire (the HD input devices are PCI cards), they are also generally more expensive than the Elgato TV Tuners. I would have said that the cost of an ADC to give you the video-in is a significant chunk out of a getting a seperate HD TV, but then you don't want to have a tuner in the house because you'd have trouble convincing the TV license people it's not in use.
So my wild card answer is take a look at a 24" display with HDMI and DVI. You can connect it to the iMac via DVI as a second display and it's HDMI in port will allow you to play the PS3 on it:
Example (This is a TN panel hence the price. The S-IPS version is somewhat more.)

  • Can I use an iMac as a display for a Wii & Playstation 3?

    Hello folks,
My GF and I are planning to buy a 24" iMac and we are planning to replace our old boxy television with the iMac.
Can someone please tell me if it's possible to connect a Wii or a Playstation to the iMac, or should I keep the old telly handy.
    Cheers

I'm not sure how easy it will be with the Wii and not sure what PS your talking about. I have done it with the Xbox 360 as it has a DVI adapter to my 24" iMac. However some people are using boxes like this one; http://www.consolesource.com/ecomm/catalog/XCM-1080p-VGA-Adapter-Xbox-360-Wii-PS 3-PSP-Slim-p-2709.html to use a Wii with monitors. Granted it will only be VGA so you will need a VGA to Mini-DVI for the iMac. This is a little pricey but will work with most systems.
There are just stand alone cables like this one; http://www.consoleshop.com/product.php?productid=20658&partner=googlebase&bid=3 so you might need to look around for adapters. It can be done though.

  • Using imac manotio with wii or ps3

    Hi all,
I have an imac 24" and i have wii and ps3.
Which device can I use to connect my imac monitor to these console?
I saw on the web the Elgato Hybrid device, but isn't the right solution for ps3.
    Best regards...

I too have a ps3 and wanted to use it as a media hub for music and pics from my imac. I use "MediaLink" from nullriver (www.nullriver.com/)and so far work pretty good. The only thing I have an issue with is sometimes the video streaming from say a download from i-tunes will start and stop. You should search the playstation 3 forums for more options. Hope this helps some.

you can get the canopus ADVC110 and plug in the yellow RGB cable into it, then plug the device via firewire 400 into your computer. then open up iMovie 09 and press import video, but don't record or anything. just play.

  • IMAC Displayport HDMI INPUT for Wii, PS3, XBOX360 etc

The iMAC supports to use its 27" monitor as an external monitor for other devices through its Mini Displayport that supports both output AND input.
There are many HDMI adapters for the Mini Display adapter but I want to know if a special adapter is required for input and what are the specifications/standards/name for the adapters, contacts and cables that are required?
Specifically I am going to use the 27" display for gaming consoles mentioned above (Wii with the Wii2HDMI adapter).
What do I need to know to write down on my shopping list? Thanks!

At this point I think that you are all wishing & hoping, but are perhaps operating on hype. Yes the 27" iMac is the first iMac with a video import. It has a bi-directional mini-DisplayPort. Various models of Macs have had mini-DisplayPorts for video output since 2008. It is not a new port on Macs.
There are a number of adapters for this port, some made by Apple, some made by a number of 3rd party Mac accessory manufacturers. Currently you can buy the following adapters; mini-DisplayPort to DVI (D), mini-DisplayPort to VGA, mini-DisplayPort to Dual-link DVI (D), and mini-DisplayPort to HDMI. There is also a mini-DisplayPort to mini-DisplayPort cable. The other thing to remember is that the mini-DisplayPort does not carry audio.
    However, if you go to the Apple iMac webpages you will find that Apple is very specific about how you can use the mini-DisplayPort at this time. This is what it says;
    Mini DisplayPort.
The Mini DisplayPort lets you connect an external display, including the Apple LED Cinema Display, to your iMac. On the 27-inch iMac, the same port offers input, too. So you can connect any external source that has DisplayPort output — including a MacBook or MacBook Pro — and use your iMac as a display. (emphasis mine)
So Apple is saying that currently you can use the 27" iMac as a display for devices with mini-DisplayPort output, such as another Mac, like one of the notebooks. Meaning that you can use the 27" as an external monitor for a MacBook Pro with a mini-DisplayPort to mini-DisplayPort cable.
Anything that you have read at outside websites with reviews about the new iMac and hooking up a Wii, a PlayStation, a Blu-Ray DVD, etc is pure speculation at this point and there is no guarantee that patching mini-DisplayPort adapters to other technology standard cables, such as DVI or HDMI, will provide the proper input to use the 27" as a display.

  • Connecting Wii to C2D iMac?

    hi there,
hey can this be done because I read elgato have a product tha can do this but only on some games.
    help would be appreciated.

If it can output to a standard def TV through the standard red/white audio and yellow video cables (RCA), products that are designed to capture such analog video should work.
I have this one (XLR8 XtraView USB).

I don't use it with a Wii, but I use it to connect a VCR to an Intel iMac.

  • Air card on Imac. Set up & share internet wirelessly with  Nintendo Wii.

I have tried to set up without success, connecting my iMac,s air card internet connection with a new Nintendo Wii. I have at one point got the Wii to recognize some connection signal (name of my iMac) but no through connection to internet with air card online.
Unfortunately, I have changed several settings on my iMac in the bluetooth and airport setups so it is not at the same starting point as original.
FYI I have an airport extreme also, which has never been utilized but is a recognized network on my MAC.

Your AirPort Extreme should be connected to the internet via the modem or whatever your ISP provides. The Mac and Wii connect to the AirPort, either wirelessly or via ethernet cables. When set up this way, your Mac will have nothing to do with connecting your Wii to the internet.
I hope this video will help:

  • Net access for wii and iPhone via iMac - help!

If I've got it right my fairly new imac flat panel has a built-in Airport networking card that actually allows me to connect my wii and iphone to the internet without a separate router. I actually managed to set up the network with the wii but later lost the connection. I just got an iphone so I've been trying to get the wifi access going going again using the standard mac os utilities but I just can't figure it out and I can't find any useful guidance. Suggestions? Thanks.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Thanks for posting back.
Does the Wii only need Port 80 to be open on the Firewall or does it use other ports also?
    Thanks

  • Can I connect either a iMac or ipad to Nintendo wii

Can ipad/iPad mini or 21 inch iMac  be used as a display for Nintendo wii or any other games console?

I am having the same issue, anyone else ?

  • Connecting Wii (RCA) to the 27" iMac

I want to connect the Wii videogame console (RCA cables) to the 27" iMac and play games on the iMac's display.
Apple says: 27-inch models also support input from external DisplayPort sources (adapters sold separately).
Am I going to need only the adapters? And what adapters should they be?

    I have a plan.
It looks like it is going to cost about £200 (About $250 with out our UK VAT TAX)
And involves a couple of convertors.
First to go from the Wii Component to HDMI and upscaling it to 720P
    http://hdcompany.co.uk/productinfo.php?productsid=100
Then to go from 720p HDMI to Mini-Display port.
    http://www.futureshop.co.uk/atlona-hdmi-to-mini-displayport-converter-with-usbpo wered-p-3280.html
I'm still shopping around, but I think this bundle would work.
I'm just waiting for speed bump/upgrade to the iMac line and then I'm going to buy the lot and let you know how it goes... If anybody else wants to try before I do, I wouldn't mind the reassurance....

  • Wii/Nintendo Gaming --Can I hook up my Wii to utilize the iMac monitor?

Can I hook my Wii system up to utilize my iMac monitor?

The only iMac with built-in video input is the new 27-inch iMac, and that currently only works with DisplayPort input. All other iMacs only have video output, not input.
You can add video input through a USB interface device. Because a Wii is designed to work with a TV, you may be able to use a device that makes Macs act like a TV/DVR. This is one example
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/ElGato/10020630R/
I'm not familiar with the type of video output (and the connection type) for the Wii, so you'll have to look into it some more to see if such a device will work. The most popular devices of this type are made by Elgato and Miglia, and they offer several different types.
If it works, the device plus included software will display the video input in a window on the iMac. You can view it in that window, or expand it to full screen. I have an older device (standard def only) and I use it to watch video from a TiVo on my iMac's screen.
