Wii/Nintendo Gaming --Can I hook up my Wii to utilize the iMac monitor?

Can I hook my Wii system up to utilize my iMac monitor?

The only iMac with built-in video input is the new 27-inch iMac, and that currently only works with DisplayPort input. All other iMacs only have video output, not input.
You can add video input through a USB interface device. Because a Wii is designed to work with a TV, you may be able to use a device that makes Macs act like a TV/DVR. This is one example
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/ElGato/10020630R/
I'm not familiar with the type of video output (and the connection type) for the Wii, so you'll have to look into it some more to see if such a device will work. The most popular devices of this type are made by Elgato and Miglia, and they offer several different types.
If it works, the device plus included software will display the video input in a window on the iMac. You can view it in that window, or expand it to full screen. I have an older device (standard def only) and I use it to watch video from a TiVo on my iMac's screen.

Set 2 independent users on the iMac, each can then have their own accounts (iCloud, iTunes etc)

  • Can i hook up my Macbook unibody to my iMac (2007 model), and use them as one computer ?

I have an iMac 20" which i bought in 2007. Then in nov 2009 i bought a white macbook unibody. I've got ableton Live running on both computers and what i want to do is, use my iMac as a main computer and my macbook as a support computer. I have a few questions.
    1) Can i upgrade the processor of my iMac ?
    2) Can i use my Macbook as a second screen ?
    3) Will the upgraded processor help in the performance of the running sofwares ?
    Please help!

    1) No. The iMac's processor is part of the logic board and cannot be replaced with a different one.
    2) No. The MacBook does not have video in capability.
    3) It might, but see answer 1.
    Best of luck.

  • Can I hook up my Dell Latitude for using iMac as display?

the Dell has VGA & HDMI so I wonder if it will work using a Moshi Mini DisplayPort to HDMI-adapter or similar?

If I understood you, you want to use your iMac as a display for the Dell Latitude.
See > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302 27-inch iMacs and iMacs with Thunderbolt ports can be used as a display, and Apple says that this feature works only for other Macs.
That's not exact and that's not the truth because an iMac can be used as a display for PCs, but the PC must have a DisplayPort or a Thunderbolt port. If your PC hasn't got DisplayPort, you can't use the iMac as a display

  • Can you make a line in audible on the iMac?

Hey guys. I just purchased my first mac. I bought the iMac 20'' 2.0 ghz . One question I have: Is there any way to have an inputs sound be played through my speakers?
The reason I ask is that I have an MPC-1000, Korg Triton keyboard, and Bluebird microphone hooked up to a mixer. From that mixer, I have always had it lined into my windows based PC. When I wasnt using the mic, I could unplug and listen to my keyboard/MPC through the computers speakers by unmuting the line in from the sound preferences.
On the iMac, I purchased the iMic USB adapter and have my external speakers plugged into the OUT and the line in from my mixer into the IN. Obviously when recording vocals you do not want to be able to hear yourself through the speakers, but I do need to hear my keyboard/mpc. Any way to mute? I could not find a thing anywhere to see if I could do this. Thanks guys. I appreciate the help.

    Hi Rick
A simple option for pass thru from line-in to line-out is the Leopard compatible LineIn 2.0.3 at MacUpdate.

  • Can't create a new batch or open the batch monitor

I just installed Final Cut Studio 2 and everything works fine except for Compressor. When I open the program nothing comes up and I can bring up all the windows manually except for the batch monitor which is obviously needed in order to compress files. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I just installed Final Cut Studio 2 and everything works fine except for Compressor.
Ok, so Compressor isn't working. What signs are being presented that tell you this?
When I open the program nothing comes up and I can bring up all the windows manually except for the batch monitor which is obviously needed in order to compress files.
Wait a minute, you just said that Compressor isn't working. If I understand you correctly, you can open the application. It is also my understanding that you don't have any idea how the Compressor interface works.
The Batch Monitor is a separate application which is only used to monitor batches that have already been submitted from Compressor. That's all it's used for, it's just a monitor. Think of it this way, it's the gas gauge on your car's instrument cluster, it just tells you how much fuel is left in the tank, it's not the tank itself.
Here's a pretty quick overview on how and when to use Compressor:

What specific problem are you having with Compressor? Have you added a job that isn't being submitted?

  • I am about to upgrade my eMac to the latest iMac. What can I do to transfer PPC software so the iMac can use my data such as email contacts, safari bookmarks, etc.?

I am about to upgrade from my eMac to the latest iMac. The eMac has given up the ghost at 10 years of age.
I have a full backup of my eMac so could use old email and safari contact/bookmarks,etc.
What is simplest way to do this?
Will the iMac distinguish between old PPC software and new Intel if I try to do a migration from old to new?
Can I use a flash drive to copy and paste required items from old to new?
    All advice gratefully received.

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
      1. Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
      2. Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons
      3. All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins
      4. Contextual Menu Items
      5. Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions
      6. Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius  work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.  Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

      6. Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
      7. OS X Lion: How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.  The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode.  It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
      1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
      2. Backup your data.  This is vitally important in case you make a mistake
          or there's some other problem.
      3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
      4. Startup your old Mac in Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
      5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and
registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your
desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:
      a. MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (15-inch,

      b. MacBook Air - Migration Tips and Tricks;
      c. MacBook Air - Remote Disc, Migration, or Remote Install Mac OS X and
          wireless 802.11n networks.
Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the  Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • Can i hook a external hard drive to the tc usb port and fire wire from the computer for faster movie transfer ?

Will i be able to hook a WD 3tb external hard drive via the TC USB port for network storage as well as a direct firewire to the same WD 3TB external hard drive for faster transfer of home movie for storage?

In general, no.  I do know of any drives that support simultaneous use of the USB and Firewire ports.  (Or eSATA, if equiped.)  I have several USB/FW drives from Seagate, Western Digital, Iomega and others that I used my own hard drive and none allow this.

    2 DVI monitors
will this allow me to use them as one extended desktop? or will it mirror those two monitors together?
id like to be able to use my macbook pro in close lid mode with a dual monitor set up

For your MBP you will need an adapter such as the following and an HDMI cable for video:
For audio, you will have to tap the audio output port and connect to the TV RCA audio input connections.  This will give you an idea of what will be required:
    Ciao.

  • Can i hook up a g-drive to the airport to access?

  • Can I safely quit task demanding activities in the Activity Monitor?

1.) I see that the "Python" often groves very large and is both processor and ram demanding. Why? And it is safe to "kill the python" (quit the process) at any time?
2.) Sometimes I see even two Pythons. Why?
3.) Are there other processor or ram demanding activities I can quit at any time without any trouble?
4.) Are there any ways of avoiding restarts? (I have a great new setup with a program called "Desktop Manager" which is almost like spaces in Osx 10.5 which I would like to keep
5.) It is generally considered "good health" for the Mac to have a restart now and then and Why?
    Thanks.

If Python is doing this all the time, then there's a bigger fish to fry. Quitting it isn't a solution. You need to find out what's causing Python to 'hang." When you view the processes in Activity Monitor one of the columns indicates who owns the process - is it you or the system? If it's you then you have something you are using on your computer that requires Python. Look for third-party software you may have installed.
In Activity Monitor double-click on the Python process. A dialog will appear. Click on the Open Files and Ports tab. Scroll through the list to see if anything pops out at you such as another program that is using Python to run some scripts.
You will need to track down whatever is using Python. You should also consider doing some cleanup. Download a utility such as TinkerTool System and use it to clean all user, system, and font caches. If you have a corrupted cache problem this could fix it. You need to do an immediate Restart.

Our email keeps shutting down and saying server not found. It works fine on all the PCs but not our iMacs. Any help would be appreciated. We just downloaded the new LION  - would this be an issue?

I feel like I'm getting closer. First, the connector on our cable didn't fit snugly. Tug it slightly and it lost contact. I put a new cable on the server and now it seems more robust. Server Admin opened faster, anyway.

This server is bound to Active Directory (using Directory Utility -- don't know if I need to do it elsewhere?) and I'm not sure what was trying to authenticate at that time.
My error messages for "server not found" have gone away for my iChat client, but now it just pops up the authentication window over and over when I try to log in. I'm wondering if there's something missing in the server binding?
