Wiki startup time

I have a wiki server that is bound to AD for authentication. It was upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6.
Start up times for the wikid service takes over 10 minutes...
Any one else having long startup time for wiki?
here is the startup section for the wikid log:
2010-03-03 16:25:19-0500 [-] Starting
2010-03-03 16:37:03-0500 [-] in migration. repo version is: 23
2010-03-03 16:37:03-0500 [-] Discussion path does not exist, skipping: /Volumes/DMSan2/mediawiki/Users/cwbell2/discussion
2010-03-03 16:37:11-0500 [-] Running

How many users in your AD domain? Apparently there's a bug in wikid that makes it recreate all of its user preferences at restart, and if there are a lot of users this takes a while. Bryson Gore found a way to patch one of the scripts to solve the problem (at least for the moment); if you're feeling daring, the instructions are [here|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2253375#10906016].

  • Slow system and application startup times

    Hi,
I've got a 17" Macook Pro (Early 2011) 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 - ever since I bought it I feel like it runs a little slow.
I've been a long-time mac used but I feel a little disappointed with this machine.
e.g.: Startup time takes around 4 minutes.
Applications take around 10 seconds to start.
Chrome sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to start, about the same to quit.
My Xbench scores fluctuate wildly - best I've ever got is 220, worst is 18. 160 is about the average.

    http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=537725
    http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=544252
I feel that tried everything including:
    - Creating a new user
    - Repairing disk permissions
    - DIsk verify and repair
    - Removing all startup items
    - Installing extra ram (currently at 8GB)
It runs well most of the time but frustratingly slow sometimes and there doesn't seem to be any anomalous activity in activity monitor. I feel that it could be the hard disk, but don't know (I always have 250-350gb free).
    Any help appreciated!

Thanks for the link. I've never seen that page before but I have done everything in that list.
It's not a spinning beachball issue - the system doesn't lock-up often it just takes a **** long time to do some things. I didn't really realise it as a problem until I started using other people's older/lower spec'ed macs and noticed that they run FASTER than mine.
Activity monitor pics - just after a restart with my usual apps running:
    CPU https://skitch.com/e-hellodaniel/83pq5/activity-monitor
    Memory https://skitch.com/e-hellodaniel/83pq7/activity-monitor
    Disk https://skitch.com/e-hellodaniel/83pxg/activity-monitor
Even using Skitch to take those screenshots took ages.
It's almost like the disk or CPU is throttled back or bottlenecked, and always has been...

  • Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) Startup Time Increased

    Hi everyone,
I have a Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) non-retina model. I have an upgraded SSD (Crucial MX100). The startup time from switching on to the login screen is usually around five seconds but since this morning the time has increased to around 40 seconds. When the power button is pressed, the tone sounds and the screen lights up but it takes quite a while for the apple logo to appear. I haven't added or removed anything or changed any settings since before this happened.  There doesn't seem to be any changes to the performance of the computer once it has started up, or the time taken from the password entered for the bar to load (Yosemite).
My hard drive cable once broke and I had it replaced at an Apple store  (if that means anything to anyone). If anyone could give me any possible explanations or advise on how I can return the boot up time to the normal time.
    Thanks,
    Ben

    Hey there,
During startup of my MacBook Pro, Captive Network Assistant checks 249 different airport, hotel and other misc. WiFi hotspots. Proabaly adding a good 3 minutes to my startup time. ***? This all started while I was on extended layover at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.
I thought Captive Network Assistant was an iOS thing. No iOS devices in my home or office. Here's a portion of the console log during startup.

Looking at the times, I see this only takes a fraction of a second but my startup time is still much much longer than it ever was or should.
Does anyone have any idea on how to get rid of this? I deleted the Captive Network Assistant.app from my computer but the checking continues. It seems to be a rarely mentioned issue doing a web search, and nothing like this, although  it's referred to in certain articles.
    Really weird.
    Gregg

I'd take another look at your startup log.
If you look closely, you'll see that all those log messages occurred in the space of 30 milliseconds - by comparison, a human blink takes about 150 milliseconds.
So while I don't doubt you're seeing slow startup time, I don't think CaptiveNetworkSupport is the culprit, per se.
Fortunately, since every startup event is timestamped, it should be easy enough to determine what task is taking the most time.
As for CNS, it's not just an iOS thing - it's standard in Mac OS X, too. I'm also under the impression (but can't confirm) that it only checks the networks that you've previously connected to, so check System Preferences -> Network -> AirPort -> Advanced -> WiFi and delete any networks you no longer use or expect to connect to.

    can you help me please?

It seems, that all Windows machines develop this type of long startup-times over time. Conclusion: Bad quality operating system . There are a few things you may try: Disk cleanup, disk defragmentation and avoiding non-neccesary start-up programs running msconfig. My experience is, that all of these have limited impact, so the ultimate solution is a clean re-install of Windows. To do this, back-up all user data and use recovery disks as available.

  • IMac  with SSD and Hard drive very slow startup time

I have a new mid 2011 iMac with a 250gb SSD drive and a 2TB drive. All are from Apple as BTO options. When I first used the iMac my typical startup time from the hardware check chime to desktop was typically 12 seconds. Something, somehow has been changed because now it takes over one minute to boot up from the SSD. After the chime I hear the fans running and also the 2tb drive.  After about 20 seconds I hear the hard drive spin down and then after another 20 seconds it starts up again. Once it starts up the boot up sequences contiunes and returns to the desktop. After this the iMac perfprms as normal. I have tried running disk utility from the recovery partition. I have also reinstalled Lion as well from the recovery partition and neither of these change the outcome.
When I first got the iMac I used time machine to restore from a previous machine into the 2tb partition and then went into advanced options in System preferences>Users&Groups to point to my home folder on the 2Tb drive rather than the default one on the SSD. That was working fine until I discovered software problems with both Preview and Textedit where they would not start up with this arangement. I then repointed my home folder to the default one on the SSD which cured this issue with these programmes leaving my data remaining on the 2Tb drive. Since doing this I have had the one minute boot up problem.
Can anyone offer any advice as to how I may overcome this problem and get my iMac back to starting up in twelve seconds from the SSD as it did before.  Any help would be appreciated on this topic.
    Thanks.

Where do you maintain your Home folder - on the SSD or on the HDD?
If you want to do a clean install (from scratch) then do the following:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
Before you go to the extreme of the above would you do this:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Just in case your system slowness is due to something eating up CPU time. Oh, and if your system is brand new check the upper right corner of the menubar for a "dot" inside the Spotlight glass. This means Spotlight is indexing the drive. Until it finishes your system will be quite sluggish.

  • Energy Saver Startup times

I wrote a script that opens an online radio station when iCal tells it to to act as a sort of alarm clock for me. The only way that this works is because I tell my computer to turn on at 9:55am via the Energysaver Scheduler option so that the computer can start up and allow iCal to open and activate the script. However, being that I am in college, I do not wake up at the same time everyday. Energy saver can only schedule the same time for every weekday, everyday, or one day at a time. Just one time. Do any of you know a way to set my computer to wake up at different times on different days?
    Thanks

Jegdart: I have no intel-mac at home, but tested that too on a friends intel-mac. Set startup-time on MacOS, shutdown and indeed machine starts into windows. Later my friend said that it didn't work anymore after he had once booted into windows and shut it down before the startup time would kick in (startup-time settings lost?). I would be very gratefull if you/someone could verify this.
    1. Also we found out that when you restart into MacOS again, the system clock is way-of and back in windows, again way of. Both have a different system time but after a short period (network time server) this gets corrected. Documentation suggest the chip time is/should be GMT.
    2. Bootcamp/EFI acts as a bios-driver for windows to be able to run. So i have to test if
a tool like http://www.boraxsoft.de/CMOSTimer_eng.html will be able to poke thru and
really set the RTC timer. (It would be sad if i destroyed my friends chipset with such a tool)
Way better would be if Apple added startup-time to the bootcamp control-panel in windows.
thanx for your suggestions so far.

  • Weblogic 7.0 startup time is very bad

We just upgraded to weblogic 7.0, jdk1.3.1_03 and are on solaris 8. We find that
the startup time is horribly slow and very pathetic. Talked to support, not much
of help there except that they accepted the fact. Removed UDDI, webservices.jar.
Any startup performance improvements from anyone out here? The startup time sucks
a lot and the support wants us to wait till SP1 which would eat away a lot of
developer time waiting for the server to start. Does anyone else have a problem
regarding the same? In 5.1 the whole application used to start up like in 2 minutes,
now we see that it takes about 8-10 minutes which is totally unacceptable.
Any help would be appreciated as this is wasting a lot of our time out here. Is
migrating to weblogic 7.0 worth it given its performance compared to 5.1?
    Shiva.

I have one domain running. In development mode we have only one server.
The development server without anything deployed in it alone takes more
than 2 minutes to startup. Below is the complete dump of the server when
there is nothing deployed in it.
    Time stamp here is 10:39:29.

  • Reducing Initial Startup time in Flex 1.5

How can we reduce initial startup time of a flex application
? Suppose we have a large application , and we want to reduce
application startup time. Is it possible that we are able to devide
application into multiple SWF files and (Initially ) only those SWF
files are downloaded on client which are initialy required ? How
can we acheive this i.e architecting application in such a way that
intialy some SWF ( only required on client side ) are downloaded on
client and remaing are downloaded only when they are actually
    required by client ?
any help would be appreciated !!!!!!!!!!
    thanks

    Thanx for your reply !
yes i want to create similar look.I have two questions
    regarding this
    1) I have little idea that we can acheive such look by using
creationPolicy = "queued" , my question is ..........suppose we are
using a tabNavigator with 4 tabs and in each tab we have set
creationPolicy="queued" . we are using mxml custom components of
each size 20 Kbs. First time either only first view will be loaded
    on the client side(size 20 K) or all 4 views(size 80 K) will be
loaded. It is really important becuase I want to reduce initial
    startup time.
    2) How we can use such component which show size of contents
    downloaded ( as used at
    http://www.merhl.com/
    ). any sample code ?
    thanks once again !

  • Startup time issue - T420s

I have a T420s with i7 and stock intel ssd and recently my startup time has been awful. Despite using various startup optimizers and playing with msconfig, I found the problem but don't know how to fix it.
When there is a CD in the optical drive (any cd) that startup time from power on (finger swipe) to desktop is 1 minute 47 seconds.
But, without a CD in the drive, startup is consistently 51 seconds or better.
Is this a normal delay? I tried to change the boot order in bios to only boot from the SSD (and not the optical drive) but can't figure this out. In bios it is already set to quick boot. Then I tried pressing f12 on startup but it seems to display the list of available boot drives without a way to change them. How do I set my laptop to only look to boot from the SSD?
    Thank you.

I found the right setting and excluded all other drives from the boot priority list except for my intel ssd, BUT it still spins up the optical drive upon power up and takes forever to boot into windows. Is there anything more I need to do so that it only boots from my ssd?
You can take out the CD?
I haven't used a CDROM in ages....except to burn an image of my recovery discs....all other CD I just create an ISO out of it and then mount these images as an when I need. MagicISO at http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso-magicdisc-overview.htm is a free program you can try using.
Regards your booting problem, I couldn't figure out why it is doing that, except that you have a bad CD disc and the CDROM drive is having a hard time to read it, hence it keeps spinning and spinning and wasting the OS time to intrepret what device is that. However, when you changed the Bios setting, it shouldnt happen like that. A bad CD, you will hear the noise, like suddenly it will spend faster, then slow down, then repeat and there will be a series of clicking sound as the actuactor arm tries to read the media and the laser try to focus.
Maybe you can try to rank them by priority 1) SSD 2) HDD 3) CDROM etc instead of pressing x to remove the CDROM Drive from the list. Also, there is 2 bootup list, one with AC and one with battery, so you need to change the list appropriately. My bad, i mean the normal boot list and the network boot list....

  • Code to be exeuted at tomcat startup time

    Hello all
I have an application which has to deal with a lot of data. Its actually a servlet which serves charts based on user's choice of dates. Since the data the servlet has to look through is huge and stored in flat files, I want to store everything in memory. Every 15 minutes I want to update this datastructure (append) in memory with new data.
I am using TOMCAT 4.1 as the servlet container. So, is there a way to execute some java code(containing the data structure) and have a reference of the class available in the servlet class at server startup time?
    thanks for all your suggestions.
    Mahesh :)

All you would need to do is declare your object so that it has scope to the entire servlet (so it could be referenced later) and then instantiate the object and perform it's methods in the servlet's init() method.

  • Why is Maverick's startup time so SLOW!!!

Start up time went from 10 seconds to 32 seconds...
I quit Drop Box, wifi & got rid of all programs out of the tray, leaving only the finder & it did not improve the time...
How does one improve the start up time????

The new Maverich update for GMail and iBook obviously fixed other issues...
The original Maverick caused my startup time to go from 10 seconds to 32 seconds...
This revised Maverick startup time is now 18 seconds...
    I greatly appreciate the improvement...

  • How to fix slow startup times on a macbook air

Before upgrading to Moutain Lion my MacBook Air booted up to the desktop in less than 30 seconds. Now with Mountain Lion it takes 1 minute and 30 seconds to get to the desktop. What can I do to get the startup time back to the way it was before upgrading?

I had already checked and tried numerous "google" searches without any successbefore coming here. If you can't give a response without being sarcastic then don't bother replying.
Wow! Are you thin-skinned. My comment wasn't, as you say, sarcastic. I never assume anything not explicitly stated or implied. If you've visited these forums for any length of time, you'd know how many don't do the obvious things, but expect responders to be clairvoyant. If none of those hits solved your issue, I'm out of ideas, since the global and app-specific defaults changes work here. Good luck and have a happy holiday weekend (US-only).

  • Macbook Pro: long startup time / very slow in general

    Hello everyone,
I purchased a Macbook Pro 15” in the summer of 2010 before going to university.
The startup time has become ridiculously slow. Even opening a web browser is stressful.
I have now completed my studies and I am pretty sure I have uninstalled all the large software I had installed for my degree and deleted majority of my
document/files however the startup time has not improved.
I have been looking through threads discussing Factory resets?
My Mac did not come with a disk (Snow Leopard originally installed). I simply turned the thing on and it was ready to go.
If I was to reset my Mac to factory settings would I need to purchase a disk? Is there something else that I could do instead?
The problem seemed to materialise when I upgraded to “OS X Mavericks”.
The only software I want to keep on my Mac is Pages, Numbers and Keynote.
I have transferred all the documents I wish to keep to another computer so I do not mind losing everything currently on my Mac.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Do you know what the original disks were? Were they snow Leopard, higher than 10.6.3, they are most likely builld specific.
I can not guarantee that it will speed it up, but if your HD was pretty full 50%+ as well as your caches, it should clear a lot of stuff off the machine that can slow it down. It will probably take a couple hours to go thru this, give or take.
How much of your HD is used, I keep mine at about 20% to help keep it faster, (less stuff to search)
If it is just the speed you are concerned with I will send you some links in regards to that. I answered that you wanted to go back to "New machine" settings, hence my reply.

Maybe something here will offer help. The reason for repairing the disk and permissions, etc... is that smetimes the disk gets errors, which the mackine hen has to work around, if it can. Hvaeing your disk much past 50% will slow it down, having caches that have not been emptied and are full of junk can slow it down. Try going to  Safari menu clicking reset Safari, empty cache, also go to Safari Preferences/Privacy tab click "remove all website data.
This would be a start. read thru the links, or do a tottal wipe and install.
I hope this has helped you in some way.

  • Ridiculous startup time on 11 month old Macbook Pro 13"

I bought my 2010 Macbook Pro 13", 4GB RAM and 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo last christmas.
Up until about the end of July when I upgraded to OSX Lion, my start up times ranged from around 35-45 seconds - I used to be very satisfied with this.
However, after I upgraded to OSX Lion, my startup time has taken a huge turn for the worst - it now ranges between two and a half to THREE minutes! This is an absolutely RIDICULOUS slowdown for a Macbook Pro that isn't even a year old - my four year old Windows Vista HP crappy laptop boots faster than this! The machine still runs smoothly and fast once it's fully booted, however.
Is there anything I can do to reduce the startup time on this machine that cost me an absolute bomb? I treat it very well, and clean the OS very reguarly using CleanMyMac.
    Thanks in advance

Go back to Snow Leopard with a fresh install, and quit using Clean My Mac, you only need to clean the caches (which speed up boot times) if they are corrupted, not routinely.
Also Lion loads all your previous open programs, another asinine idea to torture people with, click that little box thingy when you shutdown each time.
