Will 10.4.3 kill my iMac

Howdey,
I'm planing on upgradeing to 10.4.3 and ordered the Dvd's today. However, I was just reading that people are having a hard time after updating their 10.4.X insallation to 10.4.3. I'm wondering what problems people might be having with their G3 iMacs and would I have the same problems if i did a fresh install of 10.4.3 (since thats the version now shipping)?
iMac Dv+ 450mhz   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

I have an iMac tray loading. As you see below I have mine modded with 500 Mhz processor and 384 MB ram.
I installed Tiger on it and it ran very very slow. Took it off and put 10.3.9 back on.

If you are wondering why you are not getting any responses, it is because you have vented a complaint without any details that make any sense or give anyone something to work on.
If you want help, I suggest actually detailing what has happened, with versions of software etc. Anything that would let us assist.
As a start I am guessing that you have not really got the hang of "How it all works". Firstly download the Pages09_UserGuide.pdf from under the Help menu. Read that and view the Video Tutorials in the same place. A good addition would be the iWork 09 Missing manual book and something to help you learn how to use your Mac.

  • Will AppleWorks work with my new iMac?

    Hi,
I just purchased a new iMac / 24", 2.8 GHz, CD2, and I was just wondering if my old AppleWorks disc 6.2.9. will work with the new iMac. I am currently running 10.5.6.
Or should I use the new iWork instead?
Any information anyone could provide would be most helpful.
    John

    Hi John,
AppleWorks will run well on your new iMac.
Whether you should switch completely to iWork depends on what parts of AppleWorks you use.
iWork's biggest deficiency (as noted in Yvan's signature line) is the lack of a database application. If you use AppleWorks's database module, there is nothing in iWork that will replaces it (although iWork '09 does have some list management and merge capabilities). You may also find some difficulty transfering Paint and Draw documents.
Other than that, the change should be pretty easy. iWork applications will open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing (Pages), Spreadsheet (Numbers) and Presentation (Keynote) documents. They will not open AW Draw, Paint or Database documents. Nor will they open any AW documents made with AW 5 or any version of ClarisWorks.
    Best route:
-Install AW 6.2.9 on the iMac using the installer disk or by moving the whole AppleWorks 6 folder from one machine to the other. Remember to remove AW from the old machine to stay within the single user terms of your AW licence.
-Download and install the 30 day trial of iWork '09.
-Spend some time over the next 30 days getting familiar with the iWork applications, then make your decision.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Apple TV Will It Work On A 24inch iMac Computer?

I Posted This in The Wrong Forum I Hope Someone Will Delete The Other? its in The iMac Forum, If I Ever Wanted To Buy Apple TV? Will it Work with a 24inch iMac Computer? or just a Certain Kind of TV Monitor? Cause when i go to The Apple Computer Store I See they have it on a Really Big TV Monitor do i really have to Buy that kind of Sized TV Monitor? instead of Using it on a 24inch iMac Computer? I Don't Go To The Apple Store A Lot, but I Was Just thinking of it cause i Notice They Have That.

It will connect to a TV or monitor with either HDMI or component inputs.
It is mainly designed to be used with HDTV's.
It won't work with an iMac's monitor.
    Some monitors have HDMI inputs.

My i7 2010 iMac can't run AirPlay yet.  When will this become available for the rest of us??

when will airplay be available for other iMac?
    Probably never.
Airplay mirroring is only available on these models:
    iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)
It will presumably become available on future Mac releases. For everyone else, there's the third-party, AirParrot.

  • Have I kill the iMac?

I was given a grape iMac running OS9 I had hoped to used in my Special Ed classroom for students to use a couple of applications that will only run on OS10 on a Mac. (The school is all Windows :P )
I started the upgrade to 10.2 with the disk I had purchased for an iBook that has since passed away and been replaced by my MacBook Pro.
I did not read the the "read me" file as I was in a rush and didn't find out until the upgrade didn't finish that I needed to update the firm ware.
I have tried to reformate and reinstalling from original start up disks but I get a message it is unable to do the reformat.
Have I killed the computer? What are my options?
Please help as I have a couple of student who could REALLY use the the two applications I would like to use with them.

This problem occurs a slot loading iMac g3's.
The downlevel firmware may prevent information appearing on the display. You saying that you get stuff displayed on your display?
The display works for the first boot, but goes downhill after that.
I have tried to reformate and reinstalling from original start up disks but I get a message it is unable to do the reformat.
You mean the original cd boots up? You get into the mac os 9 setup stuff. You run whatever : disk first aid? : to format the hd. The formating fails. What is the exact message? You might be able to install the software without reformating.
Have I killed the computer? What are my options?
No. ( Your in luck you have a lot of windows boxen laying around, probably with all sorts of problems, you can grab one of the vga displays )
The easiest option is to attach a vga display to the slot loading iMac. There is a connector hidden under a plastic cover under the machine. The cover is on the bottom toward the power connector. The vga display works fine. If you do not mind the looks, you can leave as is. Install the firmware & the iMac display comes back to life.
Please help as I have a couple of student who could REALLY use the the two applications I would like to use with them.
You need to figure out the level of your firmware before installing 10.2 or greater. ( The PC name for firmware is BIOS. ) Installing 10.2 with a down level firmware will most likely make your iMac unusable and difficult to fix.
    What is firmware?
The firmware software receives control when you poweron your machine. It does some hardware testing and some hardware configuration then passes control to your version of Mac OS. It reside on a PROM ( program read only memory ) chip on the logic board.
Figuring out what level of firmware you have?
Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down commandoption+of
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:
    Apple PowerMac4,1 4.1.9f1 BootRom built on 09/14/01 at 13.18.04
    Copyright 1994-2001 Apple Computer Inc.
On my machine, I have 4.1.9f1.
    What firmware do you need?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
For a slot loading iMac, this article indicates that you need to be running 9.1 or later version of Mac OS Classic.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75130
"The iMac Firmware Update 4.1.9 will only run on iMac computers with lot-loading CD or DVD drives running Mac OS 9.1 or later from a local drive. If you are using Mac OS X you must boot from a local Mac OS 9.1 or later writeable partition (not a CD, or network disk) prior to following the update instructions."
You can download the Mac OS 9 updates from the Apple site.

  • Will this HDD work in my iMac?

I have an iMac at home that recently gave up the ghost. I believe the HDD died. The screen went to the flashing ? folder and when i tried using disk utility, it would not show the Macintosh HD. The only thing that showed up in the disk utility was the DVD drive and CD. The Model number on the bottom says A1173, but it is not a G5. It is intel, and has the iSight built in. I am currently running leopard. I pulled a WD2500JS-40NGB2 out of it, and figure it to be bad.
I figured I would replace the HDD and while I am at it, may as well upgrade the memory.
This is the HDD I was looking at installing:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136534
This is the Memory I am looking at:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145157
Price is an issue to me, otherwise I would just buy another computer or pay someone else to do this install. That is why I am trying to stay under $100. I know the WD green is cooler, but would rather go with a faster blue.
Can someone tell me if I am barking up the right tree, or if they have any better suggestions?
    Thanks,
    AL

Without knowing exactly what iMac you have it's impossible to say. I would recommend that you contact OWC (www.macsales.com) because they specialize in Macs, the products they carry are tested and verified to work. I think you will find their prices more than satisfactory and they also have great support something you won't get at NewEgg. While I have bought from NewEgg before buying you need to know exactly what you're doing before you pull the trigger. With OWC because they have excellent pre and post sales support you know before you have bought the products they will work. You can contact them via a chat session or just call them, you will find links on their site.

  • Will reinstall of Snow Leopard help iMac stop freezing?

    Hello,
I've been having problems with my Mac freezing.  I've tried all kinds of things (verify and repair permissions and disk etc, make sure enough free space, as well as checking fans, disk utility etc) and the problem persists.  It's a 24inch iMac that I bought in late 2008 and the problems have been  ongoing intermittently for  months now.  Basically what will happen is  that I’ll be using it when it will suddenly freeze and the screen goes  blank.  The only thing that works then is to restart by holding down the  power button on the back to turn it off and then on again.  I use it  most often for internet (I use firefox) but the issue has happened when  doing other things too, so I don’t think it’s related to any particular  programme.
I took it into the genius bar and after checking the disks and finding no problem their advice was to reinstall snow leopard.  I was the last appointment of the day before a long weekend and the guy was helpful but fairly rushed.  The thing is that I had this problem with leopard as well before upgrading to snow leopard, so I can't see how it's related to snow leopard.  So, is reinstalling snow leopard likely to help?  Would it be easier to upgrade now to Mountain Lion instead and see if that helps?
Any suggestions gratefully accepted and please let me know if there's other information that you would need to know in order to provide any suggestions.
    Thanks so much in advance
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac8,1
    L2 Cache: 6

I have the same model. What I suggest you try next for this problem:
    1. Run the Apple Hardware Test. It can't detect all hardware problems, especially intermittent ones like you might be having, but it is still a good first step.
    2. Reset the SMC. I'm not sure why but this has fixed some odd problems I have had in the past with my 2008 iMac.
    3. If this doesn't help, try running for a while without any peripherals attached to your iMac besides the keyboard & mouse. If you don't see any freezing problems, try reattaching your other peripherals one by one & running that configuration long enough to see if one of them is causing your problems.
    4. If none of this helps, go ahead & reinstall Snow Leopard, making sure you run Software Update afterwards to update it to the latest version. The Snow Leopard installer isn't like earlier OS installers. To reinstall the system just run it & accept the defaults. It won't write over or alter your user data or create any "Previous System" folder stuff, so it is a fairly painless procedure. It even performs the equivalent of Disk Utility's verify disk step, so you don't have to do that beforehand.
    5. If none of this helps, reply to this topic & we can suggest other things to try.

  • Firefox is frozen, will not open, and will not let me shut down iMac.

A couple of days ago, I installed Evernote. That made it so that my iMac would never shut down or go to sleep or restart because Evernote wanted to remain running all the time. Now Firefox has stopped responding. I cannot open Firefox, nor can I close it, nor can I shut down, restart, or log off of my iMac. I guess this might be related to Evernote, but I cannot find a way to uninstall Evernote. I do not know how to go into Safe Mode on the iMac. Two months ago, I upgraded the software to Mavericks and have had problems ever since. The only browser now working is Safari. I read that I should uninstall and reinstall Firefox, but do not see how, because I cannot open Firefox to get to Help on the Firefox toolbar. I see only the Safari toolbar. I cannot open Help and see Troubleshooting Information because I am not in Firefox, I am in Safari.

    Hi,<br>
It sounds like you have several programs that are stuck (not responding). Here are Apple's instructions for "force quitting" applications that are not responding - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3411
If you still can't shutdown your computer after trying that, you can press and hold the power button for several seconds and the computer will shut off.
It's likely that once you can shut the computer down and then restart it, that Evernote and Firefox and other programs will behave normally.
