Will 16GB of RAM really increase my speed?

Hello, all you MacBook Pro fanatics!
I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro with 8 GB of RAM installed - I bought the Corsair memory from Amazon for under $50 and installed it myself.
Amazon now has a 16GB kit fro Corsair for only $100 - the least expensive price I've found. The only RAM intensive app I really run is Photoshop CS6, but I do keep a lot of apps open at one time (Acrobat Pro X, Outlook, InDesign CS6, Illustrator CS6, Word, Parallels running XP, iTunes at the moment) and I was wondering if the extra RAM would actually help me out.
I'm looking for some advice from people who have already upgraded to 16 GB... can you actually tell a difference?
Any advice would be most welcome.
Clinton

BEWARE BEWARE BEWARE before you install your shiny new 16GB of RAM and restart the Mac!
All modern computers manage their memory using a paged virtual memory scheme. This means setting aside a piece of the hard disk drive where unused portions of the processes are paged out (as you have already found out). Plus Macs incorporate a sleep+hibernate scheme for fast and reliable recovery after the lid is closed.
Paged VM requires setting aside room for at least duplicating the physical RAM, EVEN IF it won't be needed (like you and your humongous gob of 16GB of real RAM), since the OS will want to play safe just in case. Hibernation is independent and knows nothing of the VM; it requires room at least the size of real RAM to copy its contents.
Now that you are going to stuff 16GB in to replace the 8GB it already had, the paging + sleep spaces are going to DOUBLE in size. That means you will see 16GB magically vanish from the amount of free disk space, the instant the Mac boots up fully decked out. So be sure there's enough room available before doing the install.

  • Does adding RAM help increase my laptop speed significantly?

I have a 667MHz Powerbook G4 with 512MB RAM. It's getting really slow lately, especially after installing MacOS 10.4 and Adobe CS2.
I tried not to open too many programs at a time, but it doesn't seem to help much.
Does anybody have the same problem with the newer Powerbook or Macbook Pro? I'm wondering if I need a new laptop, or just an extra RAM.

    Hi shintaoetama,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
Although adding RAM may increase speed a little running some routine system maintenance will certainly speed up things much more radically: MacOS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance

  • Will Windows 7 Pro run with 16GB of Ram in Macbook Pro Early 2011 13-inch?

Will Windows 7 Pro run with 16GB of Ram in Macbook Pro Early 2011 13-inch?, Does the brand of the Ram matter ?
I installed Crucial 16 gb and the Mac runs just fine but Windows won't start. It gets to the login screen then it turns white.

I decided to make another try today after some reading and googling the internet.
I started windows with my old 4GB memory and changed the bootconfiguration with msconfig. I typed manually in max memory tp 16384 MB and saved the settings. Then I turned it off and inserted the 16GB ram again. Then it started really but when looking at the properties of my computer it says 16 GB installed but I can only use 2,16GB. So I opened msconfig again and changed the settings once more and restarted. Now it says 16GB installed but I can use 14,2GB so I guess it is ok now for some strange reason. I suppose the lost 1,8GB is for the system ?? Do I dare to turn it off again :-) what will it say next time ?
I am so happy and greatful for all your help, I really really appreciate it and I hope my solution will come to use for someone else with same problem.
    Thank You all :-)

  • Will a more powerful processor increase my GMail and Google Apps speed??

Will a more powerful processor increase my GMail and Google Apps speed??

I take it that you know the processor in the iMac G4 is not upgradeable. It's soldered to the logic board. The 20" iMac G4 had the fastest process of any G4 iMac--1.25Ghz-- so you're maxed out there.
Do "About the Mac.." from the the Apple menu to see how much RAM is installed. Sluggishness can be due to too little RAM.
Sluggish performance can be a too full hard drive. Single click your hard drive's icon then do command i to see the values of Capacity, Available, and Used. the space Available should be no less than 10-15 percent of the vaule under Capacity.
For comparison, I have a G4 tower with a single 1.25Ghz processor and the same bus speed and video RAM you have, and it is not at all sluggish with anything other than Office 2008, which is sluggish all by itself. My G4 has 1.75G RAM and a bunch of free space on the hard drive.

  • Update RAM or HDD to increase tether speed?

Hi, I have a 2011 Macbook Pro running Lion 10.7.5 that I use to tether a stills camera. The files are very big and I have started to notice a significant slow down in capture speed. I am looking for some advice on what I could or should upgrade in the laptop. I already have the fastest processor that the laptop can handle, I have 8GB of DDR3 RAM that I could upgrade to a max of 16GB, and an internal Toshiba HDD that runs at 5,400RPM which I could replace with a faster drive. The question is, what would likely be the most significant upgrade for me to increase data speed, the RAM or the HDD? Or both? Thanks.

Yes, capture speed is referring to how long it takes for the image to get from the camera onto the HDD. I realize there are other factors, such as the type of transfer being used (USB, Thunderbolt etc.) but I'm using the best available to me for now. So upgrading the RAM or HDD is my only option. The files are about 70MB each which doesn't sound big but there's a lot of processing involved and the speed that I shoot is a factor also. I'll try shooting with Activity Monitor open, that is a great idea thanks.
I was looking at SSD's, I was wondering if shooting to a Thunderbolt external SSD would work or if the images would still get slowed down because I would still have to be going through the laptop to access the SSD. I can't shoot directly to an external drive because I need to also be able to see the images on the laptop as they come in, so it needs to be plugged into the laptop. Getting an internal SSD would be tricky because unless I spend a fortune I'd have to downgrade the amount of GBs I'd have since most SSD's are only 250-500GB and I currently have 750GB of regular disc space. Or would a regular 7,200RPM drive be a big enough upgrade from a 5,400RPM?

Which is the best company and is it necessary to buy it from the Apple store.

Let's clear the air here between fact and fiction.
Brand of RAM has little if anything to do with its quality.
A reliable vendor is more important that brand of RAM.
Installing faster rated RAM than required for your computer doesn't result in a faster computer. The RAM still runs at the speed of the system's memory bus.
Installing slower rated RAM than required for your computer will make the computer run slower.
Using faster rated RAM is a tricky business. Sometimes it will work and sometimes it will not work. This may be due to other factors related to your computer's memory bus speed and clock speed as well as other characteristics of the RAM such as CAS Latency (CL.)
The reliable thing to do is use RAM that meets the specifications set for your computer. That information is found in either the user manual or the system specs.

  • Will 16GB RAM wear out the SSD? rMBP

Will 16GB RAM in my 2014 Retina Macbook Pro wear out the SSD? I plan on keeping it for 4 years.
Can the SSD, seeing how as the new Macbooks have everything soldered I think, be replaced at all if it runs out of write cycles?

The SSDs of today have a Mean Time Between Failure rate equal to that of the hard drives.  That means you can use the modern SSD as much as you like as those failure rates are in many, many years.  The first and second generation SSDs had vey short lifetimes.  All of that has changed and you can feel free to use it as much as you like.
Your other comment, the current generation of Mac OS X's, Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks, do grab a great deal of the available installed memory.  So it looks as though all of the memory is in use.  Actually it is not but is simply grabbed by the OS X so it can quickly allocate memory as needed.  More important to look at than the available memory is the Memory Pressure.  Go to Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor and click on Memory top center of the window.  Then look at the Memory Pressure bottom center.  As long as that is displayed as green you are great.  Yellow and you are loading up the memory.  Red and you are using virtual memory, the SSD, for swap space.  With 16 GB ram it is not likely you will ever see that go yellow.

Be careful about mixing Time Machine backups and other data on the TC's disk.  That will cause conflicts, sooner or later.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.

  • Does more RAM really speed up internet use??

I have an internet connection of medium speed and use my IMac for very basic uses: Google search, email, and general internet page viewing. Lately, it seems that pages load in 4-6 seconds completely and I see the dreaded spinning ball too often. I otherwise just use the basic Mac software provided, ie, IPhoto, ITunes, etc. Would adding more RAM help NOTICABLY the speed of loading pages??

Do you every empty your browser's cache? It's a good idea to do that daily, and also to close the browser and reopen it periodically. Browsers tend to eat CPU and can end up hogging most of it when they're been running for a while.
512 is about the minimum RAM yoo can get away with, adding another GB would speed things up noticeably. Make sure you get a lifetime warranty with the new memory, a good place to look is [macsales.com].

  • Whats the best option to increase the speed on my mid 2010 macbook pro?

What choices are there for me to increase the speed of my computer ?

More RAM and a SSD. If you're running under 8GB of RAM, I would recommend upgrading to 8GB. You can check out Crucial or OWC for the correct RAM configuration for your model.
While you're at Crucial, I would also look at the available SSDs that would fit your machine - just use the System Scanner tab, and it will show you the recommended upgrades.
RAM and SSDs are about the only things you can upgrade to make your computer faster.
If you're new to SSDs, see my user tip here -> https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4741.

  • How to increase the speed of producer-consumer architecture

    Hey everyone -
This is a follow-up to a previous thread that I had posted (
    http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/How-to-use-a-dynamic-true-false-signal-with-a-case-structure/m-p/114...
), but my next question has taken a bit of a different direction so I have made a new thread.
Following tbob's suggestion, I am trying to use a producer-consumer architecture to start and stop data acquisition from a simulated NI 9237 device.  I have attached the current version of our code to this post (Producer_Consumer_architecture.vi).  Our main problem is that there is a significant lag between when elements get added to the queue using the Enqueue function, and when they are removed from the queue using the Dequeue function. As a result, the signals from our simulated DAQ channels run for much longer than they are supposed to, and the start-and-stop of data acquisition is not keeping in time with the simulated square wave signal (we would like our NI 9237 device to acquire data when the square wave has an amplitude over 3, and stop acquiring when the amplitude is under 3).  If you allow the program to run for about 30 seconds, you will see what I mean (press the stop button twice to quit the program).
If anybody has any suggestions as to how we can increase the speed of the program, they would be very much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance!

    hello,
i don't have tools needed but , i see one thing is that you enqueue
every time you are greater 3 that means about every 2-3 ms so consumer is really   sought
is it really what you want ?
may be you want to start on a treshold so you can use a treshold fonction
if i don't make mistake your square is 10 hz and the daq is configured 25000 sample 25000 hz
so you aquire 1s of signal every 100ms , there is something to correct
    make tests and tell us

  • What is left to upgrade that will improve my MacBook's  (2007 - Intel) speed the most?

What is left for me to upgrade that will improve my MacBook's  (2007 - Intel) speed the most?  I have a 2007 MacBook that has the maximum amount of RAM installed already (2 Gig).  I've upgraded to OSX 10.7 also..  It's sometimes sluggish when trying to run Office 2011 or Windows XP under VM Ware Fusion
    Thanks,

You can put two 2gb RAM sticks in your model 2,1 but it can only use 3,3gb. This is a hardware limitation and cannot be changed.

    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/faq/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-3-g b-memory-limitation-details.html
OWC tests have found that there is a slight speed increase with having two 2gb sticks in rather than one 1gb and one 2gb. Your model is in the gray lines at the bottom of the graph. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Memory_Benchmark/Apple_MacBook/

  • How to increase Processor Speed

I have a iMac Intel Core Duo 17'' and it has 512 MB RAM, and the BUS Speed is 667Mhz. I recently bought an M-Box from Digidesign which is for music, and when i plugged it in, it said there wasn't enough power to run the mbox. I looked at the specs and it says that i must have a G4 Processor with 933 Mhz or higher and Mac OsS X Version 10.3.9 or 10.4. I want to know how i can increase my computer to run this product and how much it would cost. Can you people please help me?

If you mean that an error was displayed on your screen saying that there was not enough power, then where did you plug this device in?
Did you plug it directly into the USB ports on the back of your computer?
The USB ports on the keyboard and on the back of other devices are usually provide less electrical power.
If you are getting this error message even when it is plugged-into the USB ports on the back of your computer (directly into those ports), then you may need to see if there is a power adapter for your M-Box.
It may come with it's own power supply, or require you to purchase one. If so, that power supply would plug directly into the M-Box.
As for the specifications / system requirements, you already exceed what is printed on the box.
But, you are running an Intel system. So, you'll want to make sure that the software and device are able to work with an Intel Mac. The specifications you list are assuming that you are using an older PowerPC Mac (the previous generation of processors).
Most PowerPC software will run properly on an Intel Mac. But, some programs and devices do not.
I don't see a device listed as M-Box listed as one of their current products. So, I didn't see exactly what you are working with or trying to get working.
But, you should check to make sure that it is compatible with the newer Intel-based Macs.
    I hope this helps.
