Will 16Gb RAM on a Early 2011 2.7 Ghz i7 Macbook 13" cause any problem? Also i plan to upgrade to Mountain Lion, will it work?

I want to upgrade my machine with 16 GB RAM, it already has a G.Skill single RAM chip of 8gb. need help with the following. Will upgrading to 16Gb RAM on a Early 2011 2.7 Ghz i7 Macbook 13" cause any problem? Also i plan to upgrade to Mountain Lion, will it work?

It won't cause you any issues or problems....
it is however, suggested you install the same brand RAM that are of the same specs....
1333MHz........
Installing different brands with different CL speed might cause issues....
so if you already have a G.Skill RAM installed, then install the same brand.

  • By upgrading to Mountain Lion will 1333mhz ram be recognized?

Installed 8gb/1333mhz ram running snow leopard and it would crash at boot screen.  Did some research and saw my mac cant handle that and I really would like to be running 8gb, so before exchanging the ram I was curious if by upgrading to Mountain Lion, will the system then recognize and not crash with the 8gb/1333mhz ram???

Your MBP is supposed to be using PC3-8500 DDR3 1066 MHz ram.  Macs are extremely sensitive to their memory and repeatedly have problems with ram that is not exactly in spec.  Using ram rated at a higher speed will not run faster, and in fact will not boot in most cases.
You need to send the memory back and get the correct ram for that machine, check the Mac specialists such as OWC and Crucial for memory that is guaranteed to work.

As Austin Kinsella1 says, it's a good idea to check your program versions.

If I upgrade to Mountain Lion, will my Windows based apps still work or will I need to reinstall them?

As I said, the Windows applications are running in the virtual machine, using the Windows system.  It is not directed affected by upgrading Mac OS X to Mountain Lion.  So you should not need to re-install anything that runs in the Windows virtual machine.
The real question is, does Parallel Desktop, which is the Mac OS X application, work properly under Mountain Lion?  You should go to
    http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/
and make sure you are using the latest version that has been updated to work with Mountain Lion.

  • I am using lion and wonder if I upgrade to mountain lion, will I have to purchase iWorks

Please, someone address this issue.  I wonder if I upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion, will my applications work such as iWorks '09.
I just purchased an iPad 2 and I understand that if I upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion that I will be able to integrete the two better.
Thanks so much for any input.  I have spent hours trying to find out this information on FAQs, support questions etc. on Apple.ca and
frankly, I am getting very frustrated.
PS - I just purchased the upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion not even a year ago and here I am again.  Don't know what to do.

  • When upgrading to mountain lion will it delete all my files?

Will an upgrade to mountain lion delete all my files so as to lose data or will my existing files be saved?

That's the difference between doing an upgrade or a fresh install. Mac OS 10.6 or .7 can be upgraded or even reinstalled over the top of the existing OS without affecting the user folder which contains all your documents, pictures, music, etc.
In order to do a fresh install you would have to used Disk Utility to wipe the drive before you do the installation.

  • Upgrading to mountain lion will it erase my calendars on my devices?

I have not upgraded to Mountain Lion yet but am ready to do so & am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  I don't use my Calendars on my iMac since I don't have icloud and am nervous that once I install Mountain Lion it will then erase all the calendars I have set up on my ipads and iphones to match the iMac.  Can anyone tell me the best way to upgrade and not lose the Calendar info I have on all my devices?  Thank you!!

These will protect you Mac. I have no iOS devices, so can't discuss those things.

  • If i upgrade to mountain lion, will I lose all my aftermarket software?

I just got an iPad 2 & now I need to upgrade my macbook pro to mountain lion so I can activate iCloud & share media between the two. I'm worried that if I do, I will lose all my aftermarket software on my macbook, most importantly 'office for mac' as I don't have it on disc and need it.
I was going to upgrade via the app store - can I do that without it affecting my other software?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You won't lose anything upgrading Mac OS X. Note that Office 2004 isn't compatible with OS X Mountain Lion because it's a PowerPC application, so if you are using it, you have to upgrade to Office 2008 or 2011 first. Remember to make a Time Machine backup and/or a clone with Carbon Copy Cloner before upgrading

  • I have a macbook 2009 2gb model. If i upgrade to mountain lion will it slow down the laptop?

I have a mac book, 2gb 2009 model. I am thinking of upgrading the system to mountain lion but recently did the ame thing on my work's desktop mac and I find the system is slightly slower. Will it make my macbook slower doing this. Currently I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.8. Thanks

i've been running mountain lion on my white unibody 2gb ram macbook since launch. it is possible and it works, but i just upgraded to 4gb's yesterday and i can tell a difference in the os. its not dramitically faster like an ssd would be, but its definitely snappier and smoother.
i got my 4gb ram at owc for 32 dollars shipped and it was very easy to install.

From where did you lose the iPhoto icon? From the Dock? If so, then it's still in your Applications folder. Find it there then drag the icon back into the Dock. If it's no longer in Applications perhaps you've moved or renamed it. Use Spotlight to search for "iphoto."
Upgrading to Mountain Lion will not affect your iPhoto Library unless you erase the hard drive first. Be sure you backup before any system upgrade.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
             7. Xserve (Early 2009)

  • Will my documents be saved when I upgrade to Mountain Lion OS X?

Hi. I am planning on upgrading to Mountain Lion OS X when it comes out in July. I have all the system and harware requirements. I have never done an upgrade before. Does anyone know: Will my MSword for Mac and iLife programs and everything still be on there? And will all my pictures and documents still be there? Or because of the upgrade will it be a completely new start? I am confused. Please help. Thanks

Before attempting any Major Upgrade... get yourself an External Hard Drive and create a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive...
By far the easiest way to make a Backup, is to use something like
    SuperDuper  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
    or CCC  http://www.bombich.com/
That way, should anything untowards happen during the Upgrade, you will LOSE NOTHING.

  • I have a macbook, and have heard mountain lion will slow it way down

I have heard upgrading to Mountain Lion will slow my macbook down.  True or false

I have the newest Mac Mini with 8GB memory and I'm still experiencing a considerable slow down in most processes since upgrading to Mountain Lion, especially when browsing. I feel like I'm back in the old PC days.
So at least in my case, memory is not the answer. 8GB should be plenty. Any other pointers to increase speed would be appreciated.

    my MBP specs:
    13 inch early 2011
    2.3 ghz intel core i5

    1. A 13" screen is awfully small to do any efficient editing. The 15" gives you significantly more on-screen real estate.
    2. All of the MacBook Pros can run FCE. However the graphics processor in the 13" model will limit some functionality with effects. See Tom's earlier comment.
    3. Not much difference. All these cpu's are fast. There will be more overall system performance gain from the quad core at the slower speed.
    4. FCE cannot use more than 4GB RAM anyway, so the 4GB that comes with every MBP is more than adequate. If you expect to use Aperture or CS5 then go for more RAM, otherwise there's not much reason to add RAM. You will be better off spending your money upgrading to the 7200rpm hard drive.
    5. Everything will be smaller on the high res screen; there are just more pixels (1680x1050) on the same 15.4" screen area. (I have a 15" MBP with the standard 1440x900 screen and it is beautiful.)
