Will 16X DVD's work on iBook G4 with superdrice

I inadvertantly bought 50 16X DVD-R Upon opening it I found a disclaimer that said I would need to update my firmware or these DVD's wont work. Does anyone know anything about this, or am I just stuck with 50 DVD's that cant be used on my machine?
Thanks

Even though the DVD manufactures boast of reverse compatibility, this is, I am sorry to say is not always the case.
As you have aptly pointed out that along with the purchase of your DVD's you got the message to update your Firmware.
Again this will work some of the time and other times this is not an option.
It depends on the optical media that is in your Computer.
Matshita, Pioneer, etc offer Firmware updates in 3 different places. Apple offers updates, as well as the Manufactures Web site.
The last option is Google. Type in the name an model of your burner in and read the options available for firmware updates. You will find that those options offered by Open Source Developers are normally a better choice.
Reason is open source works so much better with Mac and the Unix Operating System.
This should help..
Although remember you could be possibly stuck with the 16X media, because only the absolute newest DVD burners will accept this media without firmware updates.

  • Will a 16x DVD+R work in the iMac Superdrive?

I'm new to DVD burning and I just bought my first batch of blank DVD's. The package has a warning to make sure your drive can handle 16x DVD's.
I know the burner will only burn at a Max Speed of 8x, but will 16x discs work OK in the drive? or should I return them for 8x discs.

Just for the record... I burned a couple of 16x +R's in my internal Apple drive at 8x, one in my LaCie at 16x and both played well on both Intel machines BUT when I first tried to play the one burned on Apple drive in my Denon DVD-1920, I got a message that it couldn't be played. I hit the eject button then inserted it again and it played.
The 'old' conventional wisdom - that DVD-R is more compatible with more players SEEMS to be loosing some ground... and there are more and more DVD recorders (for both home A/V and for use with computers) that can use either DVD-R or DVD+R that it's a hard call to make. I'm going to take a cue from Dad of 3 and try the +R in my other computers and DVD players to see if I get the "hiccup" that I got on my Denon - or if it just won't play at all.
Three months back I had never used anything buy DVD-R but when I bought my 16x LaCie with Lightscribe (and wanted to try Lightscribing) all my dealer had was DVD+R (and that seems to be the doing flavor for Lightscribe DVDs - I ran into one great media Internet store on the web that I forgot to bookmark that had some good info).
Anyway, yes 16x media will burn in an 8x drive (or, I should say, mine did - DVD recorders all seem to have their own personalities) and yes, I have successfully played DRD+R's on 3 of the 6 DVD devices that I own (I don't have any game consoles) but I if you wanted to stick to 'tried and true' I would probably buy DVD-R or get a 3 or 10 pack of DVD+R's and give them a shot.
All the folks who will be receiving my DVD at Christmas will be getting DVD+R (unless I can find some Lightscribe DVD-R'S) so I'm hoping they work!

  • Will this DVD Drive work in a Lombard?

Hello my friend has a PB G3 Lombard running 10.3.9 with a 333MHZ CPU. It has a CD Drive in it, and I have a drive that i pulled from a Dell Laptop that had a bad logic board, well i took the dell housing off and found it is a HL Data Storage drive (which i successfully installed a HL drive in my powermac, so i feel good about this lol) anyway, can i put this drive in the Powerbook so he can watch movies and what not?

    Hi ze,
I can't say for sure if that drive will work in a G3 laptop like a Lombard or Pismo. I do know that the 333MHz Lombad did not come with the necessary goodies to work with a DVD drive without a PCM CIA converter card that enables it. I haven't looked for quite a while, but the cards were running about $50, a year or so ago on ebay.

  • Will my dvd player work if i re install mavericks?

Hello. Can anyone tell me how to partition my macbook pro and re-install mavericks?
I have a Western Digital external hard drive which has been set up to perform automatic time machine back ups on connection. This has been happening since before i upgraded to Yosemite.
I would like to partition my macbook pro and re install the Mavericks OS on one half if thats possible?(to extract it from one of my backups)? whilst keeping the Yosemite OS in action...?
I want to do this as my mac has stopped playing dvd's suspiciously soon after upgrading to Yosemite, so i would like to see if works again with mav's...
The dvd's are all legit, the superdrive is clean and has nothing stuck in it..   I've tried a few other things suggested online but they didn't do anything and i don't see an external dvd drive running through vlc as a solution..
I've also seen online that this has happened to a LOT of people. One report was of advice from apple that their super drive was broken only to get it back with the message that it was a software problem after all.
Another report was that after re installing Mav's it worked fine.
So i haven't seen any fixes anywhere and apple don't comment. I'd really like the dvd player to work again on this 1.5 yr old £1200 machine
Thanks in advance if any one can help,, i also warn that on a scale of 1-10, 1 being cave man 10 being Steve Jobs, i'm a high 2 or a low 3.
What ever info is needed about my computer just tell me what and where to find it and i will post a screen shot
maybe this will be helpful to others with the same problem ... Thanks

What specifically is the issue?  It won't play DVD movies through the DVD player?  Or it spits out the disc when you attempt to read the disc?
If it just won't play movies, that could simply be a glitch with the DVD Player app... if it spits out the disc, that's a different thing entirely.  If it's a DVD Player issue, download VLC and then try playing a DVD using VLC.  If that works, it's the DVD Player app.  It may need to be reinstalled.

  • Will Mini DVD's work/eject in the IQ506?

Howdy! I saw reference to this issue in Januray, but the posters were saying 'I think' & 'Maybe' about it...and I want to know For Sure before I stick a Mini DVD in the slot load device that it won't get hung up in there. Anybody know for sure?

    Yes, they work fine....
Just insert them near the center of the slot.

  • Will MEMASSPO or MEMASSIN work to update PO with new transit table data

I'm looking to refresh PO's (ME22N) with new transit table data.  Would MEMASSPO or MEMASSIN refresh PO's, i.e. new delivery date, with the new transit data.
The only work around we have found is to go into each PO, add a text field and then save.   We want to write a WinShuttle script to fix the thousands of PO's, but some PO's already have a text field, and the WinShuttle script will erase the text previously entered in the PO.
    Thanks.

MEMASSIN will certainly not effect purchase orders, as it is the info record mass maintenance.
And changes in master data never effect already existing transactional data.
I dont think that MEMASSPO will effect any other table than the 2 tables listed (EKKO and EKPO)
But it is easy for you to just test it for a single PO with MEMASSPO, so you will immediatly know if it does or not.

  • Blank 16x DVDs will not burn in internal DVD burner

    Hi

  • Will a "harvested" DVD drive work?

A very serious accident had befallen my 15in Titanium PowerBook G4 the other day. Unfortunately, the accident was fatal. Seriously damaged motherboard and TFT display. Repair costs approach the cost of a new 12" Powerbook, so funeral services are scheduled for next week, and delivery of a new 12" Powerbook is scheduled about the same time.
Fortunately, the old PowerBook had agreed to be an organ donor, so I am harvesting a number of items from it -- hard drive, 802.11b card, DVD drive, and memory. The hard drive was transplanted into an external USB 2.5in hard drive enclosure. The 802.11b card went into my older PowerMac (an M8705LL/A).
I am wondering about the memory and DVD drive, though. I have a 12" iBook G4 about two years old or so, pretty much bottom of the line, that has a CD-RW and (had been upgraded to) 640MB RAM.
Could the OEM 128MB be replaced with the 512MB from the Powerbook (assuming that the Powerbook's 512MB memory didn't get fried), upgrading the machine from 640MB to 1GB? Seems I remember reading about a memory limitation on that particular vintage of iBooks, but don't remember where I saw it or what it said about max RAM.
Could the CD-RW be replaced with the DVD drive? And would rerunning OS10.4.3 combo updater be all that would be required to install the proper DVD drivers on the iBook?
Thanx in advance for any guidance that anyone can provide.
    12" iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.3)
    2001 Quicksilver G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)
    2001 Quicksilver G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)
    2001 Quicksilver G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

The RAM from the PowerBook won't work in an iBook G4; those two machines take different RAM types, which have a different number of pins. The slots on one machine won't accomodate RAM designed for the other machine.

I have a Canon DC310 camcorder that uses mini dvd's and doesn't have the ability to connect to a computer.  How can I get my new Imac to read these dvd's?  Will the mini dvd adapter work or do I need to purchase an external dvd rom device?  Which device works well with the Mac?  Do I need anything else to get the dvd material onto my mac?  Thanks!!

No DV port in camcorder.  Just a yellow AV port/hole.  I did find a Canopus ADVC110 device in a box that was bought several years ago to convert VHS tapes onto DVD's.  Can I use this with a Mac?  Could I connect a dvd player to the Canopus and transfer the disks onto my Mac?  Or, connect the camcorder via AV port to the Canopus and that to the Mac and transfer that way?  Thanks again!

  • Burning 16x DVDs (im)possible ?

    Hello community,
I owe a G3 800 (PowerMac4,5) with a standard internal DVD burner. I burned DVDs (-R) for years. I recently bought a case of 16x DVD -R (Philips), and I am having problems at the beginning of session, with a double error message prompting that I could not print the DVD (the first time, the error message was even more precise, with something related to being unable to calibrate the laser etc...). I tried with another brand 16X DVD-R (Imation), and the same happens now. I do not have any left of my old 8X DVDs (the last one worked well a few days ago). I cannot find more on the market (Valencia, Spain) which apparently has switched to the 16X standard. On one box of these, I picked a warning message on the possibility for having to upgrade the firmwares of burner (intended to PC owners probably). CD Burning is unaffected. The problem happens with Toast, Disk-Utility as well as finder burning, although with different messages (I grabbed the Toast message images if needed).
OK, now my question: could it be that this only change from 8x to 16x is causing the trouble ? If yes, is there a solution (other than hunting for old stocks of 8x... ?).
    Many thanks
    Yvan

There are several different Manufactures of 16X DVD-R Media.
Not all will operate in the slower DVD burners, You already found that out.
You must buy the absolute best Media. Next you must read the packaging of the media you buy. You need to purchase 16X media that tells you on the packaging that it will burn at 1X,2X,4X,8X,and 16X.
    Not all of them will.
I use Maxell 16X DVD-R in the individual Jewel Cases.
Many of these other manufactures will not burn at all the slower speeds and they also use other companies to manufacture there products.

Another suggestion, let the Software choose the burning speed.
Do not manually choose the burning speed.

  • Sony DRU-810A 16x DVD±RW on G4 MDD ?

    Hello,
I bought myself a Sony DRU-810A 16x DVD±RW since I only got a Combo Drive in my G4 Mirror Door Drives. The guy at Futureshop told me that if my Mac is IDE/ATA compatible, it should work fine even if Sony claims it only works on Wintel PCs.
I first installed it in cable select mode: Combo first, Sony second, just like Apple request it in the installer guide. My G4 only recognise the Combo Drive. No Sony anywhere...
Then I tried the Master/Slave mode: Combo as Master, Sony as Slave. That's even worst: my G4 don't recognise any of the two drives...
What can I do? Can I use the Sony DRU-810A 16x DVD±RW in a G4 MDD or is it really PC only?
    Thanks a lot!

    Thank you so much MacRN!
I’ve put the Sony DVD±RW in first and the Combo Drive second on Cable Select mode and the System Profiler now recognise both drives. I tryed booting and writing a 8x DVD-R and everything is perfect.
I really don’t know why the other combinaison didn’t work but that’s not that important.
I will put my problem in the XLR8 database so it can help others.
    Thanks again!

  • 16x DVD's not useable on a G5?

    Hey all,
I bought some 16x DVD's to backup my music collection, but I can't get them to burn. I tried blowing out the drive bay (to the best of my ability) and still nothing. It will see that there's a DVD in there, but not every time. Does this sound like dust/debris or is my computer's drive not compatible with the 16x DVD's? The max burn speed is 4x - am I a dinosaur?
    Thanks,
    -S

i burn tons of disks with 16x capability on my G5 with the original SD. I think that in some cases it depends more on the brand of the disk. i learned this with my TiBook. It was VERY particular about which brand it would accept on a regular basis. I learned that Memorex, TDK and Sony disks were good choices. Back in the day, there were whole threads devoted to which discs would work with the TiBooks. I now usually just get Memorex 16x DVD's because they are so cheap and easy to find.
If there is a problem with your SD, replacements are relatively cheap at OWC.
