IMac 2 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2GB RAM

The Internet is frequently very slow. I am hard wired to the TimeWarner Motorola cable modem, but also have a new router with 5 GHz that has a Firewire port. Would my Internet speed increase substantially by hard wiring to the router by Firewire?
My MacBook with 4GB RAM is much faster via a wireless connection.

Unfortunately, connecting your iMac by Firewire directly to a router which then connects to the cable modem will Not increase the speed of your Interent connection relative to directly connecting your iMac to the cable modem. Your iMac's network speed is at your ISP's delivered maximum directly through the cable modem. All the router would add is the ability to share the cable modem's output signal among multiple connected computers. I believe you are experiencing the fact that the internal hardware (CPU, RAM, etc.) of your older iMac may be slower in processing the ISP's internet signal than your more powerful MacBook.

Your tems are fine, nothing at all to worry about. One thing you can do is shut down the computer, remove the RAM plate cover on the bottom and vacuum out the air intake. As for the spinning beach balls that isn't a freeze it means a process is busy. You can run Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and when you begin getting SBBOD look in AM and see if you see any processes using a large %CPU and also click the System Memory tab and look to see how much FREE RAM is available at that point in time. As a general rule of thumb OS X likes to have 500MB or more of FREE RAM, if you see it's at or below 500MB then a RAM upgrade is needed or you need to reduce the amount of open windows. Of note there is a new AMD Catalyst Omega driver released earlier in the week that brings 5K resolution to AMD graphics cards. Here is the link (support.ad.com/en-us/download) to the AMD site. But none of these work with my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014), Windows 8 bootcamp.

All of a sudden my MacBook Pro (Granted it is an old computer) started having a red cast to the display. All shading and shadows are red now. Up until yesterday, I never had any problems with the display. Is it just getting too old? Computer works fine otherwise.

Those gray disks are machine specific and will only work with model of Mac that they shipped with.

Had hard drive failure on MacBook 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, so had to rebuild the OS on new drive. Was on Lion 10.7.5 prior to failure, but had to reinstall Snow Leopard 10.6.3 since that was most recent OS on media I had. After finally getting ethernet connection to router working, was able to get to internet and download / upgrade to 10.6.8. I assume I can probably buy the upgrade to Mountain Lion 10.8 from there.
Problem is this, Airport will not stop self-assigning IP address for my wireless connection, and unless I can get wireless back on this laptop, doesn't make a lot of sense to continue the rebuild and reinstall of all the software that was on it prior to HD failure. Only way to my home network and router is ethernet now. Everything else on my network (Apple MacBook Pro laptops, iPhones, desktops, and non-Apple printers and laptops) is hooking up to router wirelessly fine.
Any ideas how to resolve successfully so that the airport will stop self-assigning and allow the router to assign the IP address?

Apple keep telling me I need to update to icloud but I'm not sure if Lion will work on my Mac. I've upgraded to snow leopard which seems to have knackered my .me or .mac account (whatever it's called now), so I don't seem to have any option but to upgrade to Lion if I every want to see my emails again.
