Will a 7200rpm drive drain my battery a lot?

Hi,
I'm changing my MBP 15" Mid 2010 models hard drive to either a 750gb 7200rpm or a 1TB 5200rpm drive.
What i wanted to know is will i notice a significant battery drain with the 7200 drive? I heard because the drive reads faster it can drain the battery a bit quicker.
If so, are we talking an hour or 15mins etc?
I use my mbp for music making on the move and for DJ'ing.
Thanks for any help and advice.

What are you doing that you think is slow?
A faster drive will make apps load a little faster. But going to a 7200rpm drive will also lower your battery life and create more heat.
I've noticed marginal improvements. Helps a little with some of the benchmarking tools.
The noise, heat, and power are very much dependent on the vintage/technology of the drive. Some recent 7200 RPM drives are comparable (even better sometimes) to older 5400 RPM drives when it comes to power, noise, and heat. I've yet to encounter any problems. My Hitachi Travelstar 7K200 has been a stellar performer. It might mean about 5-10 minutes less battery life than the OEM drive, but I run it off the adapter most of the time anyways.
Given the model of the original poster (late 2006 Core 2 Duo) I'd venture that a recent 7200 RPM drive could be comparable to the factory drive in terms of power consumption, noise level, and heat output. Check out specs and comparison shop.

  • What is the normal amount of GB of Other Space for a new 32 GB Ipod touch 5 Generation with iOS 6.1.3? Also, will iOS 7 slow down/drain the battery of my device?

My Other storage space was at 2.84 GB after i loaded all my music/apps onto a recently purchased 32 GB Ipod touch 5 Generation with iOS 6.1.3.  Resetting the settings and removing the music and apps did not help reduce the Other space.  I restored to a backup and got my Other storage space down to almost 400 MB.  When I started syncing music it grew 500-ish MB.  Each time I sync, the Other grows a bit more.  This is really irritating.
The official listed available GB on my 32 GB is 28.22 GB (not including Other), so now I am irritated knowing that this Other is taking up my space when I didn't even have 32 GB of free space to begin with. So 28.22 - 2.84GB = 25.38 GB.
I want to restore to a new device to see if that helps, but do not want to upgrade to i0S7.  Is there any way to do this?
If I upgrade to i0S 7 I am worried it might slow my ipod or drain the battery faster.  Will it do that?  The ipod is expensive and I dont want it to go downhill and obsolete on me because it can't handle a better operating system.

Less than 1 1/5 GB is normal. It does grow with time.

when streaming is it better to use the wall outlet for source of power or will that eventually drain the battery?

Best to use wall power to keep the battery from draining.  You can do either of course but will have a limited time on battery.

  • I have a hung up app that will not update or delete that drains the battery. How do you fix this?

I chose to update a app. It says waiting under the apps icon but will not update. I click on it to pause the update but it still drains the battery. I try to delete the app but it won't let me. What can I do?

Try the power off. Press home button and the on/off button at the same time for a few seconds. Then slide the tab to power off.
Then press the on/off again after a few seconds. Once it powers on fully, tap and hold on the application to see if it will start wobbling with a x on the corner, if yes, delete it.
If no, wait for someone else to suggest a better idea.

  • Will it wreck my macbook pro battery if i drain it.

i have learnt that it doesnt wreck macbook pro battery if i leave it plugged it in all the time, but i was wondering would it wreck it if i drained the battery down to approx 10% and then charged it all way back up and kept doing it? if it wrecks the battery whats the point of having a 7 hour battery life like it says?
    all advice is appreciated.

The battery is designed to be cycled. It is not necessary to do this more than once a month or so.

In fact it will. If you want it to last, cycle it about once a month.
Don't leave it plugged in all the time, nor should you leave it in a fully charged or fully discharged state for extensive periods of time (several weeks). That will kill it just the same.
    from
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html:
Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time. ...
    ... and
If you store a battery when it’s fully discharged, it could fall into a deep discharge state, which renders it incapable of holding any charge.

The best advice is not to obsess about it. Like any well-designed tool, Macs are designed to be used.

  • My iPad will not power down.  It automatically restarts and drains the battery because it is on all the time.

My IPad will not power down and stay off.  It powers down and then restarts after a few seconds.  Since it is on all of the time, it drains the battery between uses.

Then I think it is time to take to an Apple store to be checked. Make an appointment at your closest store. You can keep it plugged in to maintain the battery until you get it checked.

  • IOS 6 drains my battery like IOS 5

I have an iPhone 4S and just like when IOS 5 came out, any notifications that appear on my phone, if I don't unlock my phone (swipe the bottom), to clear out the notifications, they end up draining my battery!  Same problem when IOS 5 came out and APPLE had to release an enhancement updgarde to fix this!
I only have Email and Facebook notifications turned on and I make sure to clear out any opened apps. I didn't have have this problem with IOS 5.1.1.  As soon as IOS 6 came out, these problems occured, just like when IOS 5 first came out.
I used my phone 4x yesterday (2 IM's and 2 short calls) and I started with 100% battery and by 5pm, it was down to 18%.
2 nights ago, I went to bed with a 38% battery and when I woke up, my battery was at 0% as my phone shut itself down.
I have also tried doing a hard reset.
Anyone else having this issue?  Any word on when an enhancement upgrade will be available to fix this issue?

    Brad,
I truly believe the issue is the IOS 6 software upgrade.
I, recently, used to work for Apple (1.5 yrs) and have tried everything that there is to do with remedying this issue.
As mentioned in my initial post, my phone did not have these issues until after installing IOS 6, which coincidentally, is having the same issue as we all had when IOS 5 was released.

The title of this topic is wrong. Parallels/Windows is draining your battery. Perhaps the Parallels forums are the best place to look for a solution. E.g.:

Well, there are different versions of Sata.  See:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA#Revisions
I think this is the info someone would need:
You may want to post machine info.
blue apple > about this mac > more info button. Click on the hardware line. It has a little triangle in front of the word hardware.
    Leave out the serial number.
    Example:
    Machine Name: iMac
    Machine Model: PowerMac4,1
    CPU Type: PowerPC 750 (33.11)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 600 MHz

Look around & see if you can find the bus speed for the SATA.

If you are referring to the fact that, in the App Store app, after you have installed or updated an App, that the Install button changes to now read "Open" then this does not mean that the App is Open and running. It means, rather, that, if you touch the button now marked "Open", the App will be started and "Open". It's just a quick way to get to the App you have just installed or updated.

Does a bluetooth enabled keyboard drain teh battery of an iPad if left on?

I just copied that from ways to conserve battery. I have no idea if its just incrimental or what? You got me there. Just if your not using it and your keyboard is sitting there, turn it off.
You may be getting the idea by now that wireless networking of any kind drains battery. It's true, so another way to save battery life is to turn offBluetooth
*Meg- Who knows Its recommended,  but is it....."Oh your battery will last 10 additional mins with bluetooth off". Could be something as silly as that.
