Will a cinema monitor override my MBP resolution?

I have an old 17" MacBook Pro with 1920x1200 res maximum.
I want a higher resolution so I can do crisper screen shots.
If I hook up my MBP to a cinema monitor (2560x1440 resolution) will that monitor override my MBP resolution?
I thought that you cannot override the resolution of a laptop.
I just went to the apple store and saw how much better a screen shot is on their monitors with higher res.  They told me I might be able to get a comparable quality by using a cinema monitor on my old MBP
Does that make sense?

-I will need to reset the desktop to appear on my laptop before I unplug and walk away with my laptop (since the toolbar wil not be accessible on the lap top if it is not mirrored)
When you disconnect the external display, the "extended desktop" becomes smaller. Anything left on the "other" display is moved so that it is on the remaining display.
No need to re-arrange anything manually.
You can move the MenuBar to either display.
You can place tools palettes on either display, or drag them back and forth.
You can drag windows so that half is on each display, and when you scroll, both halves are adjusted appropriately. "It just works."
You do not necessarily need a huge Apple display -- any modern Monitor-quality display will work. (A TV set is NOT a Monitor.)
You can ask them to demo this for you at the Apple Store -- that is what the Apple Store is all about -- take your computer and try it!

  • MBP resolution stretched and over-scan on external display

Hey all, I started playing Portal 2 on my MBP, at a resolution of 1280x800--the game killed that resolution on my external forever since.
When I ran the game for the first time it appeared stretched on my 16:10 external monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 275t plus). In the game settings the resolution was initially set to 1024x768 and the aspect ratio to 4:3. When i corrected the aspect ratio and resolution everything went well until I exited the game. From that point on, whenever i run that monitor at 1280x800 from the MBP it is  stretched, over-scanned and ill positioned. Ever since initially running Portal 2 the external monitor has detected the resolution 1280x800 as 1024x768, but it is still able to detect and run other resolutions correctly.
I've tested the laptop with other external monitors at 1280x800 and it's able to drive them without issue.
    I've tried...
...to reverse the steps to fix the problem, but haven't had any luck.
...to reset the monitor, through the OSD, holding the source button, and just plain unplugging it for a while.

  • How do you change the location of a cinema monitor?

the cinema monitor comes expecting to be located to the left of the computer - images flow to the left from the computer onto the monitor. From the monitor they flow to the right onto the computer.
How do you reverse this if you need to have the monitor located to the right of the computer?
G5 plus cinema monitor   Mac OS X (10.4.1)
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

The left to right orientation is not changeable. For
example, there is no way to have the menu bar
reversed so that the "Apple" menu icon is on the
right instead of the left. Nor is there any way to
have a finder window with the sidebar on the right.
However, you can place your dock on the right edge of
the display and move your HD icons to the left.
Windows will usually open in the location they were
    in when you closed them.
Thanks for the help, but I think I was not clear with my original question (above). What I was trying to say was, when I slide a window from the G5 to the cinema monitor, the window always exits the G5 from the G5's left side and enters the cinema monitor from the monitor's right side. Since the monitor is located to the right of the G5, this is disconcerting.
Is it possible to arrange things so one can move a window off the G5 from its right side - to the right - and then have it move into the monitor on the monitor's left side? This would be the "expected" behavior of the image. While the arrangements option in displays exchanges the roles of the G5 and the monitor, as it were, it doesn't solve the problem.

  • Can I use two HP Pavillion 23bw monitors with my MBP with Retina Display?

Can I use two HP Pavillion 23bw monitors with my MBP with Retina Display with good video quality? I just purchased them and am already reading about issues with non-Apple External Monitors being used with MBP with Retina.  Plus I just assumed it given the power of the video card, but I can turn off the display to my MBP and extend the two HP monitors correct? I do realize they won't have the picture quality of the retina display but I would hope they look reasonable with 1080p

This is an update on the question about the use of the Dell P2415Q 4K monitor with MacBook Pro 13" and 15" w/ Nvidia graphics card installed. The monitor works very well with both systems and is automatically identified when connected. The 13" machine with Iris Graphics defaults to 2560 x 1440 at 60hz. This was very workable, matching the Apple Thunderbolt Display for resolution. I was not able to set the display for full 4K at 3840 x 2160, even at 30hz. Just not enough horsepower with the basic Intel CPU with Iris Graphics. But make no mistake, the setup works well and the screen looks great.
The 15" with Iris Pro Graphics and the Nvidia GeForce GT 575M discrete graphics card also recognized the display and drove it at full 4K, 3840 x 2160, 60hz with no problems. Running in clamshell mode required a bit of fine tuning with the Apple display settings. But nothing major.
Due to a relatively small workstation, I selected the 24" version of the Dell monitor. If you are looking for a relatively large monitor with near "retina" resolution, the P2415Q is a perfect pairing for the MacBook Pro - and a terrific bargain. I paid $530 on the Dell website.

  • Can't get my new monitor to display widescreen resolutions correctly.

Just bought a new 19" widescreen monitor with a maximum resolution of 1440x900. 1280x960 and other normal resolutions work fine, but they're distorted. But when I try to start X with 1440x900 resolution, the entire screen seems as if it's been moved to the right 2 inches and up half an inch. That is to say, there are black bars on the left and bottom, and the desktop area goes off the screen to the top and right.
I've been googling and searching forums all day but I haven't found any solution to this problem. Changing the monitor geometry in the menu can help, but it can't shift it enough to actually fix it.

try getting rid of all the other display subsections, i dont know why they are there.
also, you can try without a conf, the new x server doesnt need one.

  • Using cinema monitor with top closed

A MBP C2D is driving a 30 inch Apple HD cinema monitor with the top closed.
USB KB and mouse connected to the MBP. OS 10.4.9.
Can use the power button on the display to switch from sleep (MBP sleep light pulses) to normal operation (sleep light steady on at medium). Sleep light behavior is not discussed in the MBP User Guide when using these conditions.
Can see no indication the MBP display is on.
So is this all normal behavior? And the best way to undertake daily operation when want only the 30 inch monitor as my display.
    ?

Personally, I would leave the screen lid cracked open a bit for cooling purposes. Air is drawn in through the keyboard to aid in cooling.

  • Clear Cinema Monitor & Mac Mini

I have what I assume is a stupid question, but better safe than whatever. Is there any issue with hooking up the older clear cinema monitors to a mac mini (I assume all mac mini's are intel based)? I need a replacement monitor, but don't want to buy new because I'm planning on buying a new imac within the next year. Thanks for any guidance provided for the clueless.

  • Will Apple Cinema Displays work with Directv?

Hi everyone, I have a 23" Cinema Display, the model before the aluminum casing. Now what I'm trying to do is watch Directv on the ACD through the hdmi/dvi output of the directv receiver. I understand I will need an ADC to DVI adapter for my model display but I'm already planning on getting one since I will be connecting my macbook pro to the display.
So has anyone tried this out and can say this will work fine? Or will the picture be distorted, colors off, incorrect signal, etc? If it works fine, I will buy a dvi switch so that I can use the display for my computer and television.
I know there is Elgato's EyeTv hybrid out there but this option will only allow me to watch OTA HD and every directv channel in sd. I already have the directv hd package in my house but do not have a tv in my room at the moment.
    Thanks a lot.

As far as I know this won't work for at least one reason and possibly two. For one, Apple Cinema displays are very picky about the input that is passed to them. In fact, the 23" ACD will run from one, and only one, format, which is 1920 x 1200 at 60Hz. This is not a standard for consumer devices like satelite TV boxes, so the DirectTV will not be able to output this resolution.
The second reason is that the HDMI output from the DirectTV will likely expect an HDCP handshake from whatever display is attached. ACDs are unable to provide this.
There may be products from Gefen that will allow you to interface the two, but I'm not sure about that.

  • WIFI random connection problems when connected to Cinema monitor

This is macbook pro purchased prior to 2008. I use an external cinema monitor in my office at home. Recently when I start the laptop with monitor connected I cannot get a airport connection. If I disconnect the monitor and restart downstairs I get an automatic airport connection.
I've changed channels on airport to CH 4 since we use cordless phones which I've read are on CH 11.
If I retart laptop downstairs and bring back upstairs and connect to cinema display, i can get airport connection.
Any thoughts on this? Seems to be a system configuration issue?

Odd that in your outline of troubleshooting steps you say you "disconnect the monitor and restart downstairs"...
Can you start the macbook pro UPSTAIRS where you want to be WITHOUT the cable attached to external display and get CONNECTION?
Sounds crazy, but mabey it's your signal strength? Sometimes a wireless connection will work at the edge of it's range okay but establishing connection at the same place will not work. Does that make sense?
Ensure that you can connect to the network when "upstairs" "near the cinema monitor" like you would if it were all working okay but DONT connect it.
    Eliminate the up/down part first.
Can you elaborate on your network configuration? What Modem, Router, etc are you setup with?

    Hello Philly,
I believe that when you reset your ipod(command given from the computer, right?)  touch WHILE the ipod was updating, It cleared the system in the middle of writing files, thus corrupting(equivalent of cutting of in the middle of a sentence) the basic running system.
I suggest you go to an apple store and ask for a technical diagonosis in person. they may offer to help if the problem is fixable. If your ipod is still under warrenty, i would guess it would be free/low cost.

  • Daisy chain 2 Dell monitors from new MBP retina

I have 2 Dell E2414H monitors. I cannot get my second montior to work. Here's what I've done.
Bought an HDMI to DVI. This works fine to monitor 1.
Used VGA from first monitor to VGA second montior.
Second monitor says VGA isn't detected. I've made triple sure it's plugged in.
    Help?

So far I have NEVER heard of a monitor having a VGA port with the female type connector (typically an input to the monitor) that can drive a video signal out.  It would require substantial "smarts" in the montor especially if the monitor were taking higher resolution video on the DVI input and (hypothetically) driving re-sampled video out the VGA.
Here's the link to the information for this Dell monitor:http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&sku=320-97 76
For $180 I am 99.999% certain this montor does not have the ability to both receive and transmit video signals.
DP 1.2 is the video port on the mac computer not on the diaplay and is irrelevant in this hardware scenario.

I have a new macbook pro and an LG w2361v monitor.  The max resolution the mac is allowing me to set is 1400x1050, why can't I get to the max resolution the monitor can accept (1900x1080)?  I know that the monitor is able to accept this resolution but It can't seem to find it.  Is it something to do with the new thunderbolt port? or the fact that I'm utilizing the VGA adaptor?  I could go HDMI if that works better.

    Use DVI or HDMI.
VGA runs out of steam after a while.

  • Will a Macbook Pro give me higher resolution on my external?

I have a 27" monitor with a max resolution of 1920x1080, I can't get a higher res out my current PC laptop.
If I bought a Macbook Pro, would it give me a higher res on this monitor?

The MacBook Pro has a video card that is capable of much higher external resolutions than 1920x1080, but it can only achieve this if the monitor itself can handle it. Read the specs for your monitor to see if it can.
If your PC laptop is recent at all, I'm sure its video card can also handle more than 1920x1080 easily on an external. Chances are the limit is in the monitor, but like I said, read the monitor's specs to verify this.

  • New 24" Cinema Monitor

I'm about to install a new 24" cinema monitor and my "IT" person says I may need to get a different video processor. My current:

    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: SLOT-1

    Device ID: 0x4152
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-A13602-121
    Anyone know if I'm ok as-is? I know I need an adapter cord. I'm on a PowerMac G5 OS X 10.5.6. I think it'll be fine.

Your computer has a Mini DisplayPort. I don't know what the display port is on your other monitor. My information says a standard DVI port. If so then you can get a DVI cable and put a DVI to Mini DisplayPort adaptor on the computer end of the cable.
