Will a DKA790GX Platinum run on my old psu?

hi guys.  sorry if this is in the wrong forum section?
anyway, tomorrow, in the post my DKA790GX Platinum mobo will arrive with an AMD Phenom II X3 720 chip.  i am extremely broke at the moment and can not afford a new psu right now.
can anyone tell me if its possible to run my old psu on the new board and chip?  ive had my current mobo and psu for about 5 years, and i feel a bit out of touch with hardware jargon.  my psu its still going strong, but im not sure if it has the right amount or type of connectors?  i have tried reading the mobo manual online and my psu manual but all these volts, amps and numbers mean nothing to me  :(  one thing in the mobo manual that struck alarm bells was the mention of 'atx 24'.  my psu only has 1 x 20pins connector that plugs into my current main board.  will this be enough?
my psu details:  antec true blue 480p  (not the antec true blue 2).

thank you!

right..  thanks guys!
Fredrik - hmm..  yes, the 5000 does sound good.  i only went for the Phenom II because i thought it was a modern chip style, and therefore the best option to go for. if i had seen that the 5000 was a good competitor for it earlier, i would probably have gone for it.   i am too eager to get this pc set up though lol!  so i am going to stick with the chip when it arrives tomorrow.
Mike - i hear what you are saying about the corsairs.  i will start saving.  i need to save for a gfx card also.  for the minute, i will be running the onboard graphics, so my psu hopefully will cope untill i upgrade!
thanks again guys.  your advice is very much appreciated.

I bought a new, larger external hard drive. I have my iTunes library on the external drive instead of C: drive, Using Windows 7.
I copied my itunes library from the old drive to the new one, changed the libarary location in Edit/Preferences/Advanced to the new drive.
iTunes will not start or run unless the old hard drive is plugged in.
If I disconnect the old drive iTunes shuts down.
    Any ideas. ??

    Hello kskip,
Thank you for providing so much information about what is going on.  It sounds like you have setup iTunes to save new content to your new external hard drive in iTunes>Preferences, but it sounds like iTunes is not opening iTunes Library.itl file on the new external drive.  You have one last step to take to have iTunes point to your new external hard drive rather than your old one:
Steps to create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
You should see the following screen:
    Additional information
If you do not see the screen above, then you did not hold the correct key at the correct time. You may want to try again. Note that if you pinned iTunes to the Start menu programs, and open it that way, it may not work.
Once you select "Choose Library," you will need to navigate to the iTunes Library.itl file on your new external drive.

  • DKA790GX Platinum SOLVED (backward FP connector and IGP driver issues)

Hi all. I just got my DKA790GX Platinum along with the rest of my new PC parts yesterday and got it all up and running last night with Vista Ultimate x64. So far everything runs smooth as silk except for a couple small hiccups...
1: The power LED doesn't light up. My front panel wires only have a 3 pin connector, so I'm using the 3 pin spot on JFP2 with the arrow on the connector on the + pin. SOLVED: Connector from the front panel was wired backward. Put the arrow to - and it worked perfectly!
2: the HD3300 onboard video seems limited  to 1440x900 pixels resolution. My monitor supports 1680x1050, which I was running on my old computer with a radeon x1650xt. Since most of the reviews I'd read placed the HD3300 between the HD2xxx and HD3xxx series for performance, I figured it'd be a better card than the x16xx series. In this respect I guess not unless anyone has a way to enable higher resolutions on it.  SOLVED: Installed the latest catalyst drivers from ATI for the HD3400 series and in the advanced control center under Monitor Properties 0 -> Attributes unchecked Use Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) or driver defaults then manually set my maximum resolution and refresh rate to those of my monitor. After this in the advanced control center under Display Options I was able to set my desktop area and refresh rate to the correct numbers.
3: Initially I was getting awful frame tearing or interlacing of some sort on video playback, including both DVDs and video files like AVI. This I was able to resolve by disabling Aero but I'd think there should be a better solution for such low intensity usage. I never had this problem on the x1650xt in XP.
Any ideas for any of these problems would be much appreciated!
    Current system specs:
    Mainboard: DKA790GX Platinum
    CPU: Phenom 9950 Back box
    RAM: 4GB OCZ 1066
    Sound: Auzentech X-Meridian 7.1
    HDD: Samsung 1TB SATA2
    Chassis: Thermaltake Armor+MX
PSU: Antec 430w (will be replaced with a higher wattage supply when I have the money but works for now)
    Monitor: Samsung 225BW (22" widescreen)
I'm using all the latest drivers from the MSI web site for the motherboard, and from the manufacturer websites for sound and monitor.

Yes, I downloaded the latest Samsung 225BW drivers from their web site though I find it questionable as to whether they're functioning properly or not; Adobe Photoshop CS3 gives an error on startup saying the monitor's color profile is corrupt. My guess is the drivers aren't fully compatable with Vista x64.
Meanwhile I got my replies from MSI, both from the customer service form which I filled out first, and the technical support form which I'd found shortly after submitting the first ticket. I've never gotten two such vastly different yet both so woefully inadequite answers from a company in my life
    Tech Support's answer:
    Quote from: MSI Tech. 11/06/2008
There is no problem with the on board HD3300 VGA which can support the full 1080P resolution which be sure to have the latest mb bios and a fresh/clean OS installation and follow by updated system and device drivers installation which there is no problem to support the 1680x1050 when the monitor can support it: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1552 ** http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1552

    Dear customer,
The onboard VGA performance is lower than external VGA. It is normal.
    Best regards
    MSI technical support team
Tech support while correct didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, and the broken english is difficult to read. The customer service answer is ridiculously false, I have to wonder if this employee ever bothered to look up the answer (yes an IGP is typically less powerful than a discreet video card but the goals I was after were well within the card's capabilities. The fact that I was able to resolve the issues proves that). I hold MSI hardware in very high esteem. I've never had a problem with an MSI product that wasn't caused by another part failing (my K9N-Neo F in my previous computer popped a cap in the northbridge when the PSU blew out, and my wife had an MSI board literally melt a few years back in a power surge, neither was MSI's fault) but my estimation of their customer support has dropped a few notches today.
To sum this entire experience up though; this is simply one of the newer MSI boards on the market and it hasn't had a long time for drivers to be perfected. The ATI drivers work slightly better for now. As for how I figured it out, I read a review on the board somewhere (maybe newegg since that's where I bought it) that mentioned the catalyst drivers from ATI have had the HD3300 in them for a few months now even though it's not linked directly on their site yet. I figured the HD3400 would be worth a try. :D
In an unrelated topic, I've got a new problem though I'm not sure if it's related to the board at all. For some reason Portal stutters awfully in full screen mode even with details turned way down. It runs fine in windowed mode. On googling it I found several other people on the net have had the same problem but no answers have been put forward that I've seen. As far as I can tell it's a DX9 emulation error in Vista x64 but no way to prove it and no ideas for a solution. Then again the IGP could simply be insufficient to power that game despite being nearly twice as fast as the x1650XT I'd been using in my previous machine....

  • DKA790GX Platinum RAM questions

Hello everyone.  I've done quite a bit of thinking about what direction to take for my next computer and I've decided that I really like the features that the DKA790GX Platinum motherboard has to offer.  However, I've heard some people say that they've had issues when dealing with DDR2 1066 RAM not on the MSI board specifically, but other 790GX based motherboards.  Will DDR2 1066 run in dual channel mode with a Phenom processor installed?  Some people have said that it wouldn't.  I plan on getting 2x2GB chips for a total of 4GB of RAM if that information will be of use.  Secondly, I've been eyeing some of the high end Mushkin memory since I've had nothing but great luck with them.  This memory uses 2.0 - 2.1 volts.  I don't think it would be a problem, but the motherboard specs specifically say that 1.8v memory is the standard supported.  Do you think that all will be well when using the higher voltage memory?
I guess I have one more question before signing off that doesn't have much of anything to do with RAM.  I'm foregoing getting a Windows OS for this computer initially due to the possibility that MS will be releasing Windows 7 on the market sooner than anticipated (supposedly in the first half of next year).  If that OS turns out to be a great deal better than Vista, I'd rather just purchase an OS once rather than upgrade 6 months or so later.  Having said that, I plan on using Linux (Ubuntu 8.04) until I can make a good decision on which version of Windows to support.  How would I go about upgrading my BIOS since I won't have a Windows OS initially?  I just looked through the readme and it still says to use an ME or 98 boot disk to flash the BIOS.  I figured maybe somebody else may give me some tips on doing this outside of Windows.  That would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks for all advice that you can give me.

The cpu is designed to run four sticks, but at 1.8 volts.  That's where the catch is because most memory rated at 1066 uses higher voltages  The Bios Kernal Developers Guide AMD has posted on their web site from April does indicate what you are stating, but if you contact AMD support, they will tell you otherwise.  I swear AMD is still beta testing Phenoms long after they were released.  Running the memory I have at 1066 is not supported by AMD, only 1.8 volt memory is.  If the bios is written by the motherboard manufacturer to support the memory as mine obviously is on this board, it will work.  Since MSI has gone to the trouble of supporting this memory and it is some of the first 1066 sticks made, I have to believe most other 1066 memory using voltages other than 1.8 will work.  Below is the response I received from AMD several months ago on this issue concerning another manufacturer's board that is now in the trash for other issues.  The manufacturer in their qualified vendors list stated the memory would work, but it never did.  The e-mail is several months old now so one of the links no longer works.  Not knowing the forum rules here very well, I did block the manufacturer's name and the tech's name.  In the e-mail and in a follow up phone call, AMD is saying if the memory doesn't work, the motherboard manufacturer needs to fix the bios.
    Dear Customer,
Thank you for contacting AMD Customer Care.
AMD Phenom processors are able to support four DDR2-1066 memory modules which are JEDEC certified to operate at 1.8V.
Please be informed that the Kingston memory modules that you have is only certified to function within Jedec specification at 800MHz at 1.8V.
The 1066MHz specification validated by Kingston is out of spec and may not work.
You may either wish to check with A*** for updated BIOS support or run the 4 modules in DDR2-800 mode.

  • DKA790GX platinum problems

hi there, please bear with me as i am pretty new to building computers, i recently bought and installed a 25.g phenom, and a dka790gx platinum board.
i also have a radeon 3850 hd card installed. since doing this, formatting my hard drive and using a clean install of windows vista i have been plagued with programs crashing, one or two blue screens and other such instability. i only have 3 1 gig ram sticks installed, do i need to use pairs? i ran the windows memory checker as i play world of warcraft and when that crashes it said memory could not be wriiten, or read, on two diff occasions.
i would really appreciate some help on this. firefox seems to be a program that has a lot of problems, as does windows live messenger and yahoo messenger, these problems do see intermittent though.
    regards, and hoping for help.

What works good on one board doesn't always work on another.
Take a look at the other user signatures on this and other forums and look for users with the same motherboard, see what memory they're using.
Don't mix and match memory, pick a brand and part number and stick with it. If you change brands, or part numbers within a brand, change ALL
of your memory to that brand/ part number.
If your running dual channel, buy matched pairs,  They're matched at the factory to work together, and will have closer to identical specs than two sticks
    you buy separately.
Check your memory manufacturer's website for compatibility with your motherboard (OCZ doesn't list your motherboard on their site, but it's a new board , so it might be worth a call).
Search for reviews of your motherboard or the memory your thinking about purchasing and see if any of the sites have used your motherboard and/or memory for a review.
If it's a popular motherboard, odds are somebody will be using it as a test bed,  If your lucky, they used or reviewed the memory your interested in, on your board.
Hang out here for a bit and see if anyone is using or tried your motherboard/memory combination.

  • DKA790GX Platinum & USB +5V Standby Voltage.

    Hi All,
Has anyone managed to get USB Standby +5V to work on a DKA790GX Platinum?
All my other MSI m/boards allow 5Volts to the USB, so that wireless mice can be charged whilst off etc, but this board does not do that.
I contacted MSI and they said
' This is the BIOS spec. And we will not supply the 5V standby voltage when the motherboards is powered off.
    Sorry for any inconvenience caused.'
Anyone know why the DKA790GX Platinum is the exception? Should I request a BIOS update?
    Any help welcome.
    Affable99

    Many thanks Bas & Aramus8.
It works, thank you - but my users are asking 'How much power gets consumed in Standby?', to which I have no answer.
I guess things have moved on. All my boards are MSI, even my old KM2M Combo - and they all gave 5V at power off.
Looks like Standby is the future.
Any ideas how much power is being used? The standby obviously keeps the memory going, as the emergence from standby returns you to the same user instance!
    Any thoughts welcome.

  • DKA790GX Platinum, Unable to delete Raid set.

Back in mid February I wrote in with an issue regarding side port memory, this problem evolved to where the system would shut down even whilst in Bios. I used your wonderful flash utility to update the Bios from 1.1 to 1.3 and finally to 1.6 with no improvement, thanks again to Bas and Walker X for their kind input.
The board was returned and six weeks later a replacement arrived, this new board is now up and running with a fresh installation of XP pro and latest drivers from MSI.
The problem I have now, two of the samsung drives were setup as Raid 0 on the old board, when connected to the new board, bios changed to accommodate, from boot the drives are scanned and reported as ID 01 Mode 2+0 Raid 0 LD Size 639.99 Track-Mapping 65535/255/63 Functional. when I press Ctrl F to enter fast build utility, I am taken to the Bios setup screen? and not fast build.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
I would like to format these drives for re use, can I do this in windows or must I delete Raid set first via fast build utility?
The fresh installation drive is disconnected during the above process.

Thanks Svet for your fast responce, please excuse my lack of knowledge on Raid, the above was the first Raid set ever configured.
With Raid set to IDE in Bios, this shows as one drive (E) in my computer, do I format this?

  • MSI DKA790GX Platinum and AM3 CPU - BIOS Update

    Hi,
I am going to upgrade my current computer from an older AMD socket 939 setup to an AMD Phenom II based system
I am thinking of the MSI DKA790GX Platinum motherboard and AMD Phenom II X3 720 (Black edition) CPU (AM2+ Motherboard and AM3 CPU), but I need to clear up the BIOS update for AM3 issue before buying the components.
The motherboard advertisement states that the BIOS has to be upgraded to support AM3 CPU
My issue is this: I do not have an AM2/AM2+ CPU, and I am looking to jump right into buying an AM3 CPU - so will the unit power-up/POST with the combination of the newer AM3 CPU and older BIOS to allow me to update the BIOS using either FDD or Bootable USB Pen in a DOS environment?
Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of this? Any help on this would be appreciated
    Thanks

The 1.74 Bios is one I got from MSI tech support.  We're trying to work through a problem with my new board. nothing major, but we're not quite there yet.
I know that Nvidia was The chipset to have for several years, but I think AMD has upset that applecart a bit with the 780 & now 790 chipsets, and with Intel
getting into the chipset game as well, Nvidia could see some rough times ahead.  They may even end up dropping out of the chipset game, since Intel's new CPUs have the memory controller built on die.  Hence, Intel has no real need for NVidia any more, Nvidia may end up just focusing on the video card market, unless?
My board defaults to 800mhz as well and I'm running a 720. You have to keep in mind that they have to make the boards default to the lowest common denominator as not everyone runs 1066 capable memory on their board (even though Manufacturers may spec the memory so). I also have to manually bump up the voltage, as well as timings and ratio for 1066.  But, my Mushkin ram plugged in and booted with no problems, but I did have to bump up the voltage and tighten up the timings even at 800.
Interesting (Abut BIOS version 1.74). I guess it is not yet available for downloads.
So now Intel CPU's have the memory controller on the die (just like AMD). So does this prove as an advantageous concept? I expect Intel to implement better memory management than AMD. AMD drops speed when all 4 memory banks are occupied... what is the use of utilizing max RAM capability if memory controller cannot sustain the max RAM speed?
I may agree with you on the concept that motherboard should support the lowest (RAM) denominator...
However if someone uses lower than 1066 MHz sticks, system should detect accordingly, and when 1066 sticks are used, auto-detect as 1066... I still do not see the issue here. On former nVidia based boards like my MSI K9A Platinum SLI (with an AMD X2 CPU), 800 MHz modules are detected as 800 on auto, no need to manually tweak anything in BIOS. I still have to see an nVidia EPP profile enabled board which is claimed to auto detect 1066 MHz capable memory sticks by default.
On my system it is also the same... I have to up the RAM voltage to 2.2V (otherwise system is not stable), as well as setting up the timings and of course the RAM/FSB speed ratio to 1:2.66.
I am running currently 4 chips of OCZ platinum 2 GHZ (for a total of 8 GB RAM, for 64 bit Vista and Linux). Also with mine (as we know Phenom II does not support 4 sticks of 1066 MHz) it drops to 800 MHz. As well as, I needed to bump the voltage to 2.2 V... otherwise in the middle of operation, system reboots. We know what this is about, dont we ?

  • DKA790GX Platinum and Phenom 2 1100T

    Hello,
    Currently i am running DKA790GX Platinum with BIOS 1.G0 and AMD Phenom 2 X4 965 Deneb C3.
I am going to upgrade my CPU to Phenom 2 X6 1100T Thuban.
The problem is that X6 1100T is not on the list of supported processor by that Board. http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=prodcpu2&prod_no=1552&maincat_no=1
Maximum Supported CPU only 1090T, according to that list.
    My question is :
I am in needs to upgrade to more powerful CPU.
    (Considering that, X6 1035T - X6 1090T are supported)
will 1100T be working on my Board?
    Thanks

When will MSI update the BIOS to support 1100T?
All six cores Thuban are already supported except 1100T.
I think it is not that difficult for MS to edit BIOS and add support for 1100T.
C'mon, i am your loyal customer. Pleaaseee...
    Thx

  • DKA790GX Platinum BIOS-settings?

I´ve recently upgraded my previous AMD X2 +4200 processor to a +6000. Everything seems to be working fine except Cubase 5 which now crackles, stutters and the ASIO-meter shoots through the roof. I know I maybe should be posting this in a Cubase-related forum, but I don´t think the problem is with Cubase itself. Before the CPU-switch everything was working just fine. After failing to find a solution I then opted to exchange my mainboard (from a MSI K9N platinum to a MSI DKA790GX Platinum) in hope that this would solve the problem. It did not.
I´ve gotten suggestions for problems with cpu, memory, graphicscard, harddrives and god knows what.
I´m a little confused as to where to start changing things?
Are there any general suggestions for BIOS-settings for this mobo that any of you have to share?
I´m now running it in fail-safe mode.

Quote from: Fredrik on 07-May-09, 20:45:35
Since the sound problems was not connected to processor or motherboard... Speaker, interfering signals (cell and cordless phones!!), CuBase/Windows (but crackle whatever that is is not easily associated to software).
Will check, but it seems unlikely since nothing´s changed regarding cables, power or physical position of hardware (speakers, interface or otherwise).
I should say that I previously used Windows XP Pro SP3 and recently switched to XP Home SP3, but since I´ve used the older processor with both OS´s and have had no problems that shouldn´t be the problem either. Besides, I´ve never heard of any problems/differences with audiointerfaces when switching from XP Pro to XP Home or vice versa as long as all drivers updated properly.

  • DKA790GX Platinum and memory issues

I've had my dka790gx platinum now for approximately 2 weeks.
    Build is as follows
    DKA790GX-Plat - bios v1.6
    AMD Phenom II X4 940
    2 x 2gb Corsair Dominator 1066 (5-5-5-15 @ 2.1)
    Gigabyte HD 4870x2
    Creative X-Fi Extreme GF-PS
    Tagan 900BZ
It has been working fine but all off a sudden I started getting the dreaded BSOD in vista 'apc_index_mismatch' and 'memory_management' - I've ran memtest and on the first test @ 45% the system reboots with 4gb of memory in. This happens whether it is running @ 800mhz or 1066mhz, I've also tried 4 x 1gb of corsair xms2 ddr 800mhz and get actually the same issue. If I run 2gb of memory then all tests are ran without any problems and again this is for both the dominator memory running @ 800 and 1066mhz, and also the xms2 memory.
I've then ran another test using the 2 x 1gb xms2 + 2 x 512mb xms2 (all ddr2 800) to give total of 3gb and ensuring all 4 memory slots are populated, and again all tests run fine.
I've tried the memory in ganged mode and unganged mode, but it doesn't make a difference, once i go over 3gb I have the problem, so is this a motherboard fault (i've opened support ticket but had to miss some info as it meant fully stripping down the pc to get hold of the sticker on the side of the pci slot) or a cpu fault seeing the memory controllers are on the cpu?

As far as overheating is concerned, it really shouldn't be a problem. Before getting a cooler for my RAM, it would get too hot to touch during full load, but would never run into any sort of problem. If you don't believe me have a look at what a SUPER*TALENT Stick looks like: http://www.pcstats.com/articleimages/200702/supertalentT1000UX2G4_full.jpg - Compare that to the dominator, The SuperTalent has to be just about the ugliest MEM-SINK you could ever lay eyes on  EXCELLENT RAM though
Kind of a really silly question here: when testing below 4gb, you are testing both sticks, right? I mean they look identical, a small distraction & you're putting the same one back in...happened to me...
yep memory was tested as single chips, also as stated previously testing 4 x 1gb of other memory caused memtest to fail, but 4 x 512mb passed, so did 2 x 1gb + 2 x 512mb
memtest fails all the time when have 4gb of memory in this mother in any combination, but using pc-check all memory passes, if my works had a ddr-2 memory checker then I would have also teste the memory in that as that will pick out memory faults better than any software
Also when the dominator is in slot 1 there is about 1cm between heatsink and dominator fins at the most, so this be a possible cause of the memory getting too hot especially as I would leave the machine on 24/7, but as I've re-setup another machine to do the stuff this machine was doing then i'm hoping i don't see the problem..

  • OS 10.9.2 will not allow me to update my old iPhoto app.

OS 10.9.2 will not allow me to update my old iPhoto app. I upgraded computer from a PowerBook G4 to a MacBook Pro and migrated my data onto the new machine. I had iPhoto '09 installed running on 10.5.8.Now on 10.9.2 and I get  get a message that iPhoto was registered to another user and that I will need to purchase my own copy. Not sure why since I've always used the same account and its my only account. Isn't Mavericks supposed to come pre-loaded with the latest version of iPhoto?

    This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto qualify for a free upgrade to 9.5.1 and which require a purchase;
If you're having problems with the App Store you might try this:
1 - enable the Debug menu in App Store:
    open the Terminal application.
copy the command below and paste into the Terminal window:
defaults write com.apple.appstore ShowDebugMenu -bool true
    followed by Enter.
    launch App Store, login.
2 - select the Debug ➙ Reset Application option:
    3 - try again.

  • Will Windows 7 Pro run with 16GB of Ram in Macbook Pro Early 2011 13-inch?

Will Windows 7 Pro run with 16GB of Ram in Macbook Pro Early 2011 13-inch?, Does the brand of the Ram matter ?
I installed Crucial 16 gb and the Mac runs just fine but Windows won't start. It gets to the login screen then it turns white.

I decided to make another try today after some reading and googling the internet.
I started windows with my old 4GB memory and changed the bootconfiguration with msconfig. I typed manually in max memory tp 16384 MB and saved the settings. Then I turned it off and inserted the 16GB ram again. Then it started really but when looking at the properties of my computer it says 16 GB installed but I can only use 2,16GB. So I opened msconfig again and changed the settings once more and restarted. Now it says 16GB installed but I can use 14,2GB so I guess it is ok now for some strange reason. I suppose the lost 1,8GB is for the system ?? Do I dare to turn it off again :-) what will it say next time ?
I am so happy and greatful for all your help, I really really appreciate it and I hope my solution will come to use for someone else with same problem.
    Thank You all :-)
