Will a Genius look at my computer?

My iMac stopped working, it turned on but didn't load the hdd. My roommate was on the computer when it happened so I don't know what was done to it. I took it to Apple and the guy I saw plugged in an external and booted the computer from that, the computer booted up exactly as it should. He then opened Disk Utility and started wiping my drive, so I think he assumed it was corrupted data. I took it home and restored from Time Machine and it worked for a couple days and died again, so I did what he did; I put in a SL disc and booted from that and wiped and restored, but it died after a couple days again. I did this a couple more times, then it stopped working altogether; So I decided to take a look at the hardware. FYI I'm an Electronics Engineering major, I've been building computers since 2003 for profit and I'm certified to build circuit boards and program microchips.
Before I opened it up, I ran some test. I know from the Genius at Apple that it will work perfectly fine booting through usb on a working HDD with Mac OS, and it runs fine from the SL disc. I also did a verify disc in the Disk Utility on the SL disc, and I get red writing, errors and such saying the drive wont work. So I'm thinking, and hoping a little, that it's a dying HDD; I open it up and it looks okay, I mean there are no obvious burn marks or anything like that. I take out the HDD and plug it into my laptop via usb and boot my laptop from that drive and run Disk Utility; It boots up perfectly fine, where as it didn't boot up at all on the Desktop comp, and Verify Disk tells me the drive is perfect. All my data is intact. I run some other tests and determine the HDD is not failing. I don't have the equipment I need to test all the parts at my house though, so I'd still need to take it in.
Now to my question, I was talking to someone about this and they said "I guess we'll never know, if there is any sign you opened it they probably wont touch it even for money." this statement doesn't make any sense to me, why would they care if I don't have insurance. I can't think of a reason why they'd have a policy to only work on computers that have been untouched by people who don't work for Apple. I can understand it for if you have insurance, because most people don't know how to handle computers and could break something and Apple doesn't want to be financially responsible for ignorance. But I do know how to handle them and can prove it, and I'm financially responsible for it whether it's my fault or a factory defect because it's not insured. So what business is it of theirs if someone say upgrades their HDD? Or in my case, tests it to see if its working alright, so that when I do take it in I can tell them I've already crossed it off so it saves them some time.

I don't understand it, I ran every diagnostic I could think of on that drive and it all indicated that it was working perfectly, and it was working perfectly. All day yesterday it ran like normal, I installed Lion today and it ran, to my surprise, quite smooth, possibly better then it did on SL, but then again I wasn't doing much on it. Then my roommate gets on it to upload a picture while I'm making buttered toast for lunch and I come back, he's done and gone, the install I had going was finished and I clicked done on it, then it lagged for 5 minutes, and every time I tried to access any content it lagged another 5 minutes. That's how it acts when the HDD is disconnected, the content stays up because it's already been loaded into the computer but new content doesn't come up. I turned it off and then it was just dead, white screen flashing folder with the "?" on it. I tried holding option to boot from my SL disc or my external but nothing would come up, blank screen. I couldn't even get it to eject the disc at first, I ended up rebooting and holding eject for 5 minutes to finally get it.
So I pull it out and plug it into my laptop and the partition I made (50gb) is still intact but the main drive is dead, greyed out not mounting and appearing as empty. Then it started crashing, the HDD itself, it shuts down randomly then starts up again. The problem is it's not on long enough to do anything, I ran a verify disk and it gave a red message saying to repair the drive immediately; But I can't repair or wipe the drive or anything because of the crashing, it's not on long enough. It's just a heap now, I guess I need a new HDD. This is better then a circuit board problem though, I just hope that the HDD problem wasn't caused by another hardware problem.
I need to test the computer with another HDD to make sure. The only HDD available is my external (that I use for Time Machine) so I'm going to partition that and intall Lion on the partition and pop it in. It's a 78% chance that the HDD just died of old age at this point, 3% chance it died from malicious code.

  • White screen upon booting. Already took it to the "Genius Bar" and they wouldn't even look at the computer.

I have an older model MacBook that all of a sudden just stopped working. I originally got the apple logo but it would load no further than that. After reading other posts I tried the Command-Alt-P-R reboot option. It worked a few times and I was able to reboot the computer but now it just loads to an all white screen. I took the computer into the Genius Bar at my local Apple store and the "genius" did not even try to turn on the computer or look at anything. He just suggested I try to sell it on ebay for the parts and purchase a new computer. He said it was pointless to do anything else. I was pretty disappointed by this response especially since he didn't even look at the computer at all. Just hoping someone has a suggestion as to where to go from here!
    Thanks for the help.

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
Or if you are running 10.7 Lion, boot from the recovery partition (Command +R on boot) and use Disk Utility to repair your OS 10.7 partition.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • Will Apple Genius Bar run Diagnostic tests on my computer or do I need to set up a special appointment?

I got my Mac OSX with Lion about 9 months ago. Two months after I bought it, it crashed. Apple gave no direct explanation and ended up wiping the computer. Two months after that it happended again. That time they gave me a knew hard drive but they still didn't give me an explanation. Then recenty it crashed (kernal panicked) after I downloaded the thunderbolt application. That time apple was able to restore everything.
Unfortunately, my computer is now showing many of the same symptoms (slow loading, safari freezing, applications needing to be forced quit...etc) as it did before it crashed the first two times. I should mention that when I say "crashed" I mean my computer wouldn't turn on again. Now I am afraid to turn my computer off or even let it go to sleep. I know this isn't good for it but I don't know what else to do.
So my question is, will Apple Genius Bar run some diagnostic tests for me or give me a special lesson? Or do I need to pay for a special lesson? I just want a trained person to run some diagnostics and go through the basics of updating, shutting down, and restarting my computer with me. That way if anything goes wrong they see it first hand.
One more thing, could it be something I am doing. I have downloaded Flash Player but only from the Flash website. But I have heard Flash/Mac problems. Or is there anything else I could be doing or downloading?

With Apple you Always Need to Make an Appointment. Otherwise they will turn you away. Even if the place is empty.

I just bought a new laptop and my ipod nano will not stay connected to my computer. When I first connect the ipod it starts to sync on my ipod but not on itunes. The ipod is initially connected to my computer, I can see it when I look on devices in my computer. However, when it finishes syncing it is no longer detected to my computer. I cannot transfer any of my songs to my new laptop because of this. I have tried to reinstall itunes, reset my ipod and use a different port. None of these things worked. Any ideas?

How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer

  • Computer will not recognise ipod and crashes computer

Working on windows xp, I have reset the ipod but it will not come up on the side bar, therefore I cannot download music, instead it just turns off the computer.
I am lost somebody please help!!!!!!!

Sorry I haven't a clue re the computer it was made to my spec.
Fair enough. Okay, we'll try analysing minidumps of the crash with Windows Debugging Tools to see if that can tell us which component or driver is causing the issue.
Open "My Computer", and see if you can find a directory called C:\Windows\Minidump. (That's where minidumps usually go on a PC, so long as the Systemroot hasn't been set to some other folder.)
If it's been collecting minidumps, there should be files in there with names like "Mini(number-numbers).dmp"
(If you have "Hide filename extensions for known file types" enabled in Windows, the ".dmp" extension may not appear on the dump files. The numbers in the file name will be different for each minidump, if minidumps are present.)
Once we've tracked down some minidumps, we can have a go at analysing them.
    1. Download and install the Windows debugging tools from here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86.mspx
    2. Go to Start, All Programs, Debugging Tools For Windows, Windbg
Once you open Windbg, you will presented with a blank screen.
    3. Click on "File > Symbol File Path". Here you will enter the symbols
path. Symbols are needed to effectively debug.
    The path will be:
    SRVc:symbolshttp://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols
    4. Enter in this path and click OK. Now, go to "File > Save Workspace"
so that your symbols path is saved for future use.
    5. Go to "File > Open Crash Dump" and load the file.
(An "Open Crash Dump" screen will appear ... doubleclick "My Computer", doubleclick "Local Disk", doubleclick "Windows", doubleclick "Minidump", and doubleclick on one of the minidumps in there.)
You will/should get a message to save base workspace information. Choose no.
Now you will get a debugging screen. It takes a little bit to run it,
as the symbols have to be downloaded as they are needed.
After the "bugcheck analysis" part of the screen comes up, look for the component that seems to be causing the crash. (It'll say "Probably caused by" ...)
Let us know the precise name of the component. (Include any file name extensions like .dll or .sys.)
If you can, have a look at several of your crash dumps. Are all the crashes being caused by the same component? If not, could you let us know the names of the various components being cited in the various crash dumps?

  • Iphone will not sync all music to computer.

I have the newest version of iTunes and my iphone4 is upto date. Now my "Purchased music" from itunes snced with a little bit of messing with but all my"un-purchased" music will not export to itunes. When I click,"on this phone" the "un-purchased" songs are on there, but it will not goto my itunes library. When I gotto sync, it is saying it will erase all music files on my phone, which is the opposite of what i want. i want to put the rest of my "unpurchased music" on my itunes on my computer. PLEASE HELP!

    Trobinson
The sync for music is a one way sync from ypur computer to iPhone and not  the reverse.  If you can't move the original music into that iTunes library, and that is the best answer, then you will have to look for a 3rd party app to help you.
I have used Senuti when I had a PC disaster to do what you are trying to do.

  • Problem synchronising calendar - warning - will delete iCal appointments on my computer

    Update:
I found the answer to my problem below on this forum - please, for anyone with the same issue, look under the topic "calendar delete" - you will find that a user JamisonF (Jamison Firestone) answered it perfectly - it works. You have to delete your blackberry 'history' first and start with a new 'first time' synch. I got into new trouble for a bit, as I deleted the blackberry app, before I found and deleted the folder Mr Firestone suggested and so got a new version of the Bberry software that then didn't recognise I had the iCal at all - I had to add a new calendar (someone else's suggestion on this forum!) - now I think it is all ok. But goodness me - what an incredibly, painful, unnecessary ad overcomplicated process for SOMETHING THAT WE RELY ON BLACKBERRY TO PRESERVE - OUR PRECIOUS DATA THROUGH SYNCHING! Sorry - but it is an enormous, gi-normous, huge, unforgiveable failure on the part of Blackberry that it is so badly messing up synching and making us all live in fear of losing our data - SYNCHING WITHOUT FEAR OF DATA LOSS IS FUNDAMENTAL!!!. It makes me see red. Does anyone remember Palm Pilots - synching was beautiful - you saw the synching happening, you resolved conflicts as they occured, no double entries, no failures. It is possible - and this was years ago!!! The technogeeks are making it worse - they are overcomplicating and costing people time, anxiety and headaches. I now feel LUCKY if I even get my data in the right place - I don't even care anymore if I have double entries - THAT MY DATA IS STILL THERE SEEMS TO BE LIKE A BLESSING. IT SHOULD NOT BE THIS WAY. Is this why Blackberry is about to go out of business. There - said it!
Hello - I wonder if anyone can help me.
When I synch my blackberry curve with iCal on my mac using the bberry software, I see the following message.
"A large amount of your organizer data has been deleted from your device. If you continue, this data will also be removed from your computer. Are you sure you want to remove this data from your computer?" The options presented are "Delete data from the computer,  Add data to device orCancel"
I can see on the blackberry calendar some shadowy appointments from several years ago that look like they used to be there - some calendar items must have been deleted from my blackberry in the past in error. I want to put all the old records of appointments from years ago that are in my mac iCal back on my blackberry. Yet the warning above sounds final  - "if you continue...this data will also be removed from your computer" which would be a disaster.  Yet that option - "Add data to device" sounds promising?? Could anyone help and tell me what happens if I press "Add data to device"? Will that put my computer calendar data back on my device or will that simply be me "continuing" and will all my mac calendar data be erased?
Many thanks in advance - I am afraid to synch in case I lose all the calendar appointment records I have stored - some from when I had my son, which are precious memories. Any help would be very gratefully received. Sam

I was finally able to reset iCal on .Mac

If they are both using the same iCloud ID (assuming you are running your mail from iCloud), then yes, the email will disappear from your Mac after you delete it from your phone and after your phone sycs with iCloud and your Mac syncs with iCloud.
I use a windows phone, but it works the same.

If things seem to be going haywire with your phone, it seems that it MAY be a software issue.
Now, that being said, that does not necessarily mean that it is a virus. Software issues do happen sometimes. It is probably just coincidence.
What you need to do is restore the device using iTunes. This will fix any software issues. After you have done this, you can restore from an iCloud backup.
iCloud does not back up the actual software, so no, the "virus" would not have gotten into the backups.
The link below provides steps on restoring your device using iTunes as well as how to restore from an iCloud backup.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
Don't worry! Everything should be back to normal if you follow these steps.

You can sync with onee at a time. Syncing to another will erase the current content.
Copy everything from your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.
