Will a macbook late 2008 will run Snow Leopard 64 bit?

hi, just wondering if my macbook aluminum which i bough this february, but assembled in november 2008, will be able to run Snow Leopard 64 bit?

No one will know that until Snow Leopard actually ships. However, Apple has already published a list of Macs that will run the 64-bit version of Windows Vista and MacBooks are not on that list (only the latest MacBook Pros and the Mac Pro are named). Here is the link:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1846
Of course, Snow Leopard and Vista are two completely different "animals," so we'll just have to wait and see. I'd guess that there is a chance that your MacBook will support 64-bit, but I wouldn't claim that it would be a certainty.

  • Is there a way to down grade my Mac Pro 5,1 firmware so it will run Snow Leopard?

If so will it still run Lion?    I believe this machine is the same hardware that ran Snow Leopard 6 months ago.   Brand new Mac Pro 5,1 two months old.

HURRAY!!!  Houston we have Snow Leopard!!
FatMac your post of the firmware data got me digging deeper....   To sum-up
Prior to the death of the old Mac Pro1,1.  I was in the process of re-building my emergency boot disks.
As a result my Snow Leopard Emergency Boot Disk (SL EBD) was a fresh 10.6 install.
The old MacPro died before I was able to update the SL EBD to 10.6.8.  This I of course forgot.
The new MacPro would not boot from the old MacPro hard drive (10.6.8).  (It must have gotten taken out in the crash).  And obviously would not boot off of the SL EBD.
Initially Apple told me that the new MacPro would run SL.  But later conversations with tech support emphasized that it would not and it was standard practice to not make new machines backward compatible.
    I assumed I was done-for.
Thanks to FatMac's firmware info, I investigated deeper and found my SL EBD was only 10.6.
The 10.6.8 combo updater will not run from Lion.
Now if I could somehow boot into Snow Leopard  so I could do an update.
I stumbled across a Carbon Copy Clone sparse image of my old MacPro 10.6.8 start-up disk that I had made DAYS before the crash and burn of the old MacPro.   (Am I lucky or what?)
CCC'd the old sparse image on to a spare hard drive, restarted & Bingo!  I was running Snow Leopard!
Ran the 10.6.8 combo udater and updated my Clean Snow Leopard install.   Now I have a virgin copy of Snow Leopard to boot from.
I guess I can toss out my Leopard 10.5.6 Boot disk.
Now I need to make a sparse image of the virgin Snow Leopard boot disk so I can re-install it at anytime in the future.
Anyone know how to burn an 8 Gig sparse image onto to several DVD's for archiving?
FatMac,  the screen capture was the old fashoned way... I pointed a camera at it.
Thanks to everyone for their contributions.
    Today was a good day!!!

  • New 2009 Macbook - Can it run Snow Leopard 64 bit?

Just bought the new unibody white Macbook. I intend to run VMWare Fusion 3 and found some online suggestions to run it in Snow Leopard 64 bit. Will this new macbook support to boot Snow Leopard 64 bit as default?
    Thanks.

    Pancenter,
I tried my macbook, I cannot boot to 64-bit. I tried boot with "4" and
6" pressed and even modified the com.apple.Boot.plist file as said in http://macperformanceguide.com/SnowLeopard-64bit.html
neither works. So the result on Late 2009 MacBook is same same as Compactc9 in his early 2009 model.
May be Apple may have lock the OS to 32-bit on Macbook ?
    Reinstalling will not help.
It looks like Apple limits the Macbooks to 32-bit even though some are apparently capable of loading the 64-bit kernel. Probably another way to differentiate between the Macbook & Macbook Pro which as I understand it, will boot into the 64-bit kernel.
I think the best you can hope for is an EFI firmware update.

  • Which later IMacs can run Snow Leopard?

I am planning on getting a new (or refurbished) 27 inch IMac soon, to replace an older Mac. Problem is, I will need to dual boot between Snow Leopard, and Lion, because I must still use Quicken. I assume if I pick a 2010 IMac, it will still run Snow Leopard. However, if I decide to get the newest IMac, will it still boot with Snow Leopard? I'm wondering if the i5 and i7 chips will boot the old system.

It totally depends on what the firmware is set up to work with. Any iMac issued before July should dual boot. If I had to do it, I'd get a refurb one that's guaranteed to boot w/SL. If the seller can't guarantee that, don't buy it.

  • What's the earliest gen macbook that will run snow leopard adequately?

...and what's the ballpark on how much one would cost used (e.g., on ebay). just want to be able to run the latest/greatest for a reasonable price.
    cheers!

I can't tell you anything about pricing. And, I can't provide you with the exact answer to your MacBook model/Snow compatibility question, but I can say that I probably would not buy a MacBook not having a 64-bit EFI. The only issue with such a MacBook (e.g., the MacBook 5,1) is that you would not be able to boot directly into 64-bit kernel mode. But, I assure you that nothing of significance is lost by not being able to do so.
That is, if one has a Mac that can boot into 64-bit kernel mode and 64-bit programs, then the programs will run exactly the same way whether in 64-bit kernel mode and 32-bit kernel mode. So, again, you would lose nothing by not being able to boot into 64-bit kernel mode. In other words, if you have a 64-bit processor, then your machine will run 64-bit programs just as any other Mac with a 64-bit processor will--having booted into 64-bit kernel mode or not.
Note, however, that a machine might startup and shut down a tad faster that if started in 64-bit kernel mode rather than in 32-bit mode. Some report such results, but I am yet to see a test that adds confirmation.

  • Have a New MBP with Lion preinstalled. Need Snow Leopard instead. Have time machine from old computer running Snow Leopard as well. PLEASE HELP!!

I have a brand new Macbook Pro with Lion preinstalled. I haven't even turned it on yet. I desperately need Snow Leopard because my music software is not Lion compatible yet. I also have a Time Machine backup from my old Macbook that is currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. How can I get Snow Leopard on my new Macbook Pro? Also, will Time Machine replace the applications on the new Macbook Pro with the older versions I have in the backup or how exactly does that work? I've been staring at the box for 2 days now worried I won't be able to use any of my software. PLEASE HELP ME!

It depends on the build of your machine; normally, no Mac can ever boot from a system older than what it came with. However, there are exceptions: right around the time the new OS is released, there may be some machines which will be able to run both OS's.  Here is some information on software builds:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159
You may have to call Apple to figure out if you can use SL on yours or not.

  • Run snow leopard AND mavericks

Is there a way to have older OS's on a machine?  I just got a new iMac and it came with Mavericks.  Now none of my games work because it doesn't support "PowerPC" games.  On Snow Leopard they worked just fine. Not that I play them often but every now and then I'd like to play Age of Empires, Age of Mythology, etc...  I won't even get started with Sim City 4.
    Thanks

Parallels will run Snow Leopard Server with no troubles... and (if you go through a WHOLE SERIES of convoluted steps and make a specially modified ISO or DMG of it) Snow Leopard. Same with VMWare. BootCamp is for Windows only.
Also, if your machine is old enough to take a Snow Leopard install on the Mac HD, (it would have to have come with SL), you can partition your Mac HD and install Snow Leopard on one partition, Mavericks on the other.
I had a G5 iMac with a 500Gb HD and I had OS10.3, 10.4 and 10.5 ALL installed on it in separate partitions.

  • I have a new l7 macbook pro running snow leopard.  When I try to boot into windows7 32bit, I get either a blue, black, or flickering screen.  Then I have to physically shut down and try again.  At that point it will load correctly.  Any help?

I have a new l7 Macbook Pro running snow leopard.  When I tried to to install windows 7 32 bit on bootcamp, I kept getting a flicking black and blue screen when it tried to install. (Tried several times).  I finally downloaded the bootcamp windows support to a flash.  I inserted that and finally got it installed.  Now when I try to boot into windows I get either a solid black (sometimes blue) or flickering screen and windows will not start up.  If I then physically shut down the mac and restart, it will finally boot into windows where it tells me that windows was shut down unexpectently and once I click start windows normally, it will boot up.  That will generally let me boot into windows for the remaining of the day.  The next day, the same thing happens again.  I have tried reinstalling several times, and the same thing keeps happening.  It is not my windows disk because it installs flawlessly on the mid 2008 macbook pro.  Anyone know how to fix this?

I own HDM 2011. But they have products that aren't listed or hard to find too.
