Will a new iMac be suitable for my 69 yo PC loving dad?

Hello,
I'm thinking of buying a new iMac for my dad as his PC is a PC of crap.
Thing is he downloads movies and tv shows sometimes using Vuze other programs.
He also uses Ashampoo software, video converters and burns dvds of photos or a film to discs.
I mean he's not a maniac downloading stuff all the time but he does like to watch his shows before they come out here.
Apart from that he uses the internet and a photo app.
Is there anything he can't do on a Mac that he currently can do on his pc.
The computer he has is rubbish. I mean the worst, it's always breaking down and getting viruses and just gets slower and slower. When browsing you end up with 10 pages open and the one you want is all over the place with the page not being displayed correctly.
He spends his time 'defragging' and fixing it. I don't even use it as it's so slow.
My dad's 69 and after i set it up with his mail account and time machine will the iMac be able to cope with his downloading and other nonsense?
Thanks.

Yep, get him a new iMac or Macbook AND Apple TV and he will love you even more. Teach him to use Airplay streamed to Apple TV and he will be in heaven. One piece of advice from an old time Windows user who came over from the "Dark Side" several years ago. Try to get him out of "Conversion" mode. Think about it from the inch -vs- metric argument, it is easier to just start using one or the other but a pain to try and convert back and forth all the time, so don't try to convert everything. Just teach him to start using the Mac and over time he will never want to go back to the old PC. If he tries to constantly convert everything he will get frustrated.
Also, Apple's web site has all sorts of useful tutorial videos that will help ease the transition.
Good Luck

Just bought a new iMac, with Lion, for my wife.  When is was wifi with her old iMac on line with it's printer, HP C6200, no problems printing.  Now that it is by itself it does not recognize the C6200...It recognizes my laser hp 1012 and laser hp 6300 but will not print to them wanting an autenication

How is the C6200 connected to the iMac, is it via USB or Wi-Fi? If it's via Wi-Fi please make sure it's connected to the router using the printer's Network Wizard. Then click System Preferences - Print & Scan and assuming the iMac is on the same network as the printer, if it is the printer should be seen. If it's not then click the + sign and add the printer. • Will the new iMac's be able to play encrypted HD content or not?...

    My first post!
I, like most people, am very impressed by the new iMac's, especially the 24" model. I would buy one today if it wasn't for one unanswered question: will the new iMac's be able to play encrypted HD content or not?...
    See the following text:
"Interestingly though, neither Apple nor Nvidia would comment on whether either of the graphics chip options for the 24-inch iMac come with HDCP support enabled, which would make the iMac a viable link in HD video's copy-protected chain. HDCP support is an option for those GPUs, which makes the fact that we couldn't get an answer intriguing."
This worries me. The screen resolution is sufficient for 1080p, but it seems that I may not be able to play encrypted HD content... An upgrade to the GPU at a later date seems difficult (impossible?) too...
    Any comments?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
This is new to me. Where have you heard HD Encrypted content will be provided from? You can buy an Elgato EyeTV Hybrid that will allow you to watch HDTV content (i.e. Freeview HD) when it comes out properly. I thought HDCP was aimed at preventing copying of content from a HD-DVD or Blu-ray disk (I may be mistaken) - and at £550 for the cheapest desktop size drives we are still a long way off seeing one of those drives in Apple's consumer line-up.
The iMac 24" is unique in that it does have a removable graphics card. Whether any replacements ever hit the market is yet to be seen.

  • WHEN WILL THE NEW IPHONE BE AVAILABLE FOR ON-LINE PURCHASE?

Ordered the first iphone on-line and want to order the new one the same way. When will the new model be available for on-line purchase?

Maybe never, but doubtful anyone here has any idea before Apple makes an announcement.

  • Will the new iMac support FCStudio2?

This may be a dumb question, but I did a search on the forums, and they talked about only G4s and G5s.
The Apple web site confuses me; it says "An AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card" is needed, but the iMac has an "ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB memory."
Does that mean FCStudio2 can be installed only on a G5, where you can install different graphics cards?

Hi, I have had pretty good experiences using the new iMac (2.4GHZ, 20" screen, 2GB memory, ATI 256MB videocard) with FCStudio2. Below details my experience.
Final Cut Pro: works great, everything is pretty smooth and it hasn't failed me yet (most likely you will be limited to working with DV footage however, as you can't add a standalone capture card for HD).
DVD Studio Pro: works great with no problems
Compressor: when I am doing large batch exports, it is noticeably slower than my tower (to the extent that I just do them overnight).
Motion: works fine if you work with files with a small duration; doesn't run as smooth as my tower
    Soundtrack Pro: works great
Color: I've been tinkering with this program. Seems to run fine, but I am no expert in it.
    Hope this helps!

  • New iMac software change for mac book air

I have just bought a new iMac but not from the apple shop or online. It came from a dealer.
I would like to update my software on my other apple computers to Mountain Lion. Do i have to pay for this or is it available because i have effectively bought it on the new machine and normally if you buy an app it is available for more than one machine.
I have registered the mac for three year applecare.
Not sure really if this question is not appropriate but thought i would ask it before buying the program.
    Thanks in advance.

This program will make a bootable DVD/USB Flash Drive and the program is free. Saves you from downloading the installer twice. When you download the installer, stop the installation, make the DVD/USB drive, and then start the installer.

  • Will the new iMac run MSOffice 2004?

I have been running MS Office 2004 for Mac on my Macs since, oh, around 2004.  I'm completely happy with it.  I don't need any new features.  I know it inside and out and I don't want to learn a new version.
Will a brand new iMac run my Office 2004 software?  Or will this software be obsolete on a new machine?

No, except by running it through Mac OS X Server 10.6 in emulation.

  • Will the new iMac run Motion 3?

I can't really afford to go to the Mac Pro. I am looking at the new iMac (24 inch, 2.8 processor model), and wondering if it will run Motion 3? I know it won't be ideal, but still I hope that it will suffice for a high-end amateur user.
I currently run Motion 2 on a Macbook, which is obviously not ideal, but at least somewhat works.

No, except by running it through Mac OS X Server 10.6 in emulation.

  • Is the new iMac really faster for video coding?

I recently bought the new Imac 27 inches, 3.2 GHz. I mainly need this speed to edit and to code my bluray movies from African safaries journeys
Until last year use an 2008 iMac. Editing was fine but coding was very long (up to 6 hours for 40' with the best performace parameters und 2 passes)- I use Adobe Première.
With my new Imac editing is more convenient but coding ist not much shorter (up to 5 hours 30' for 40' with the same parameters). I was exepecting a much shorter coding time. What the purpose of  nice marketing specs like high speed und turbo boost if they cannot really be applied in specific applications like video coding.
    Or am I mistaken?
    Regards
    Patrice

    Hi Patrice,
Within Apple’s slim new 21.5- and 27-inch iMacs are NVIDIA GeForce GPUs, based on our new Kepler-class architecture, which helps make them up to 60 percent faster than last year’s models. This follows news in June that Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display uses Kepler GeForce GPUs.
The new 27-inch iMac offers the GeForce GTX 660M as its base GPU, with even faster GeForce GTX 675MX or GeForce GTX 680MX GPUs available. The 21.5-inch model comes with the GeForce GT 640M GPU, with an available upgrade to the GeForce GT 650M GPU.

So, any Apps that use the GPU to assist GPU should be much faster.
Though I don't see it listed here, it may be too new, I suspect it may be supported...

  • Why does my new iMac keep freezing for no apparent reason?

Why does my new iMac keep freezing? This usually happens when it is not being used and is particularly frustrating when I do need to use it and ahve to switch off and then on again and wait for it to reboot.
I am not computer literate so keep any answers as simple and idiot friendly as possible. I treat it like a car. If I put in the key and turn the ignition on and the enginesprings into life I am content. If not.............. well!

In order to provide any help we need to understand a little bit more about the problem you are experiencing.
You indicated the issue occurs when the sytem is not being used. Does this mean that you stop working on the system and the system 'goes to sleep' where the screen goes black, but when you need to wake it back up by pressing keys on the keyboard or clicking the mouse the system doesn't wake back up? To test for this issue open the System Preferences and click on the Energy Saver preferences. See the 'Computer Sleep' slider to the far right 'Never' setting. You can set the 'Display sleep' setting to any number you prefer. With these settings see if the issue still occurs and let us know the results. If it resolves the issue then give Apple a call and let them know you are unable to wake the system when it goes to sleep. You shouldn't be having that issue.

  • Any Thoughts on New iMac Fusion Drive for Editing Video

I was wondering if there were any thoughts about the new iMac for editing 720/1080 HD video from say an iPhone 5 or Canon Power Shot camera. The drive speed is now only 5400 RPM in the 21.5" model. I was curious if the the combo SSD/5400 RPM HDD had the same editing power as as a 7200 RPM drive.

Thanks, I've read it, well I should say I've tried to read it. Somewhat over my head, but not totally. I'm just curious if some of the video editing tasks would be done on the HDD or faster SSD drive. I'll have to go back to the article and see if there is any mention of that type of task.
I'm a little disappointed that you need to move up to the 27" iMac to get a 7200 RPM Fusion Drive. Do not need a 27" desktop.

  • How will decide which method is suitable for uploading data

    Hi,
How will you decide which method is suitable for uploading data

    Hi,
<li>If you haver very few records, even entering manually is also an option.
<li>In most cases where we need more than 20,000 records , BAPI or Direct input would be the fastest. Here error handling is tough here.
<li>You can use BDC(Session and Call transaction methods), where we can write code to identify error records, if you get error records, those can be reprocessed.
    Thanks

  • New connection not suitable for needs

I had total bb installed a few weeks back for my sons online gaming and ever since being installed he has had constant packet loss and dc's meaning that the line is not suitable for what he needs it for. I went ahead and called technical support and they went through the mumble jumble that I expected them to such as check master socket etc...etc.. at the end I was told the problem would be elevated and someone would be in touch, nobody got intouch and I called the cancellation department today only to be told that I'd be charged £400 if I tried to cancel and that the line speed was fine. I tried to explain that the line speed was not the problem but the quality of the line and the constant packet loss and dc's from any form of gaming.
Anyone any ideas on how I can get my problems through to someone that will actually help me, I refuse to pay £400 to cancel a service that is not working correctly.
