--- Window couldn’t be loaded
--- Window Repair and HP Recovery were tried but not functioning
--- OEM Hard Drive was then removed & formatted few times by using other computer
--- Hard Drive was then tested by other computer; it can be installed Win XP & Win 7
--- So, Hard Drive was eliminated from the suspect list
--- Replaced with other good RAM from other computers & put back the OEM Hard Drive to my HP G62; everything worked fine, such as: able to reinstall Win 7; listening to music files; got Internet to download latest BIOS from HP support site; connected to my 42 inched TV as my monitor; and even smoothly updated the BIOS from v.17 to v.37!
--- Also, able to receive Window Updates from the Internet; and seemed that all problems were nicely solved
--- Once I believe my system got stabilized; I went back to test the 2 supposedly problematic RAM to see whether they were both faulty or not, then the whole thing has turned around! Completely screwed me up until this moment …

Procedures performed for troubleshooting:
Tried hard reset for more than 5 times (removed battery, AC adapter disconnected and then hold down the Power button for more than 60 secs) and tried reseating memory too; same result with Blank Screen with blinking cursor after each reboot.
Connected to an external monitor [Fn + F4/F5] to see whether there was any display, nothing has showed on the external monitor, it seemed that no connection established between the two.
Finally, took the long journey to follow the Service and Maintenance Guide of HP G62 to remove the CMOS battery for well over 15 minutes and put it back. But the result was again disappointed. Tried 4 times already. The latest error message is:
The CMOS checksum is invalid. The CMOS will be reset to the default configuration and will be rebooted. Please check your BIOS Setup options to see if they change.

After this message, the same Blank Screen with blinking cursor came back. And pressing the ESC key couldn’t bring up Startup Menu when booting up …
Note: the fan is still running; the Power button is functioning but seems stuck here forever!
I’ve already carefully read this HP Support document titled “HP BIOS Application Selected is Corrupt or Missing”:

If really is the BIOS problems, then I will have the difficulties of updating a Window-based BIOS when I couldn’t even load Window!
(Note: Boot from USB has no point because right now I couldn’t change the boot sequence because the various “Startup Menu” options are not showing up!)
Secondly, I am still stuck with the Blank Screen with a blinking cursor after I passed the first screen of “Press the ESC key for Startup Menu” when re-booted again!
Thirdly, I have formatted my Hard Drive more than 3 times during the last few days for testing; I don’t have the OEM pre-loaded Win 7 with me anyone … and I don’t think I have the UEFI installed previously on my system. I did try hold down the Win Key + B with the most updated BIOS in the attached USB …, it came back with the same blank screen with a cursor blinking after reboot.
Note: the Blank Screen I’m experiencing right now is not completely black, in fact, there is background light from behind the screen and on each reboot, I can see the HP logo and the left corner message of: “Press ESC key for Startup Menu” … So, I suppose that my computer screen is not physically broken at least.
Requests:
Please explain to me that what are the problem areas and the root causes if is possible?
What steps or other tests can be done to make it work again?
Do you think replacing the entire MotherBoard can cure the Blank Screen with blinking cursor?
[Warranty: expired! I am the original purchaser & the end-user of this HP G62; acquired 2 years ago directly from a trustworthy source: staples (in Canada). Would HP Support still willing to service it for an extra charge?]

Bootcamp 5.0 installation: Blank Screen with blinking cursor after restart
I have a late 2011 mbp with 16gb ram, 2 750gb hard drives. I'm trying to install bootcamp on the 2nd hard drive. I'm using the cd drive in an external usb housing to install windows 7 ISO burn. I've used this cd several times in the past with no issues. After creating the partition with bootcamp assistant, my mac restarts automatically then when it boots, it goes to a blank black screen with a blinking cursor. I have restarted and repeated this process several times, as well as let it set there for about 1 hour and still nothing...I've also tried sudo ram reset and command option p r but still nothing.
Anyone have any idea what's wrong?Ok guys, for those of you who are having the same problem...here are the instructions on how to get past the blank screen and install windows 7 bootcamp with TWO hard drives installed.
1. With both hard drives installed, start the bootcamp assistant (you need a usb optical drive with windows dvd inserted to do this). Partition your SECOND hard drive for windows.
2. When your computer restarts and your at the blank screen with the blinking cursor of doom, manually shut down your computer.
3. Remove both hard drives from your MBP. Put the "Bootcamp" partitioned hard drive in the main HD bay. MAC OS DOES NOT NEED TO BE INSTALLED ON THE "BOOTCAMP" HD TO DO THIS.
4. Install your optical drive back into its factory place. (Where the "BOOTCAMP" HD was just installed at)
5. Power back up your MBP while holding the alt/option key down. Make sure the windows DVD is still in the optical drive!
6. Click on windows cd to boot from.
7. Start installing.
8. When finished, replace optical drive with "BOOTCAMP" HD and put MAC OS HD back in like it was before this process.
9. Your finished.
10. Now enjoy! -

On the black screen, press Ctrl, Shift, ESC to open the Task Manager window.

Right-click the task, and then click the End task button. Windows should start normally.

From the Windows Control Panel, go to Programs and Features or Add/Remove Programs.

I work for HP, supporting the HP Experts who volunteer their time and technical knowledge to help others.This is not what happens. The screen goes black, no curser or anything, then it comes right back on to the same page I was on when it went out. It doesn't happen when I login, it happens as I am on a webpage or playing a online game.

I have a new Dell Inspiron 15R. I closed it without shutting it down and when I tried to start it up I get a blank screen with my cursor. What's wrong.

I bought and downloaded the windows 7 ultimate edition 64 bit iso, then proceeded to perform a correct burn to a DVD one at the slowest speed and one at the fastest. all went well. so I open Boot Camp assistant and follow the instructions to the letter, downloaded the driver support to the flash drive. partitioned my drive with more than enough room 150 gb. its starts its install. I get through everything seamlessly where I put in my info all with the exception of my activation code. yet it still continues to finalize the install and does another restart. boots back up to either A. black screen saying press any key to boot to my install disk. B. if I take it out just a white curser. also I read it may be because I had the flash drive in while I was trying to boot so I removed it as well, same result. any input would be much appreciated.

New Install - startx results in blank screen with mouse cursor
I installed Arch on my desktop last week with no issues, so I wanted to install it on an old THinkpad R31. Everything with the installation went smooth, but when I try to 'startx' all I get is a blank screen with a mouse cursor that I can move around. I've installed xorg-xinit, xorg-twm, xorg-xclock, and xterm.
I'm not getting any significant errors in the logs, or even the terminal I issue 'startx' in.
I'm not sure what the problem could be...

To run twm, you need to install xorg-twm from [extra] (I am not sure if it installs by default). Do you have xterm installed?
According to his first post he has both xorg-twm and xterm installed.
I do indeed.
I went ahead and installed LXDE anyways, just to see what would happen. Exact same thing, it looks like everything is about to load but only the mouse cursor shows up. My Xorg.0.log is the same, so I won't post it again.
I do get an error in the console about the openbox menu.xml file missing but I doubt that's related.

Black screen with blinking cursor when installing win 7/vista x64 osx 10.6
i am using bootcamp 3 to install windows 7/vista x64 on osx 10.6.6.when i select install mac reboots and then all i get is a black screen with white cursor.
i have created a 20gb partition with disk utility in fat32 and i had installed windows successfully when i was on osx 10.5.i tried erasing and creating new partition but same problem.
any help will be appreciatedThis solved it for me!

I have been asked by friends of mine to help them fix their L300D. Their son got to it and they are not sure what he did, but now when it loads into VIsta, all they get is a Black Screen with a mouse cursor in the middle. The cursor looks as if it is at a lower resolution than the normal display.
I thought this would easily be fixed by running a restore, but it does the same thing when I load the restore function (via holding 0 on boot), and even the copy of Windows 7 I tried to install as well.
I think it might be a hardware issue, but before getting them to contact Toshiba Service for a warranty repair, I thought I would post here and see if anyone has any suggestions on what it could be.Hello
Well buddy, if the same issue appears if you load the restore function and also with Windows 7 I think its a hardware issue.
You can try to load the default settings in BIOS Maybe it works.
To be honest I think the best way is you contact the nearest authorized service provider. The technicians can check the notebook and exchange the hardware if there is a hardware problem.

Black screen with blinking cursor while trying to boot from Win Install CD
I'm running Leopard with all updates on a brand new MacBook Pro.
I initially had no problems with Boot Camp - the Assistant partitioned my drive, I put in my Vista DVD and hit Start Installation and the MacBook rebooted from the Windows DVD just fine. I made a mistake, however, when I used my retail Leopard disc instead of the install DVDs from my new MacBook, so the wrong drivers got installed and things were a mess. It wasn't painful setting up Boot Camp, so I decided I'd just go back into Leopard, wipe the Windows partition, and retry.
The Boot Camp Assistant had no problem merging the boot camp partition back with the main one, then making a new boot camp partition (I'm not sure if this was necessary, but I did it). I then put in my Vista DVD again and hit Start Installation. The MacBook rebooted, but not into the DVD - it just sat at the black screen with the blinking cursor in the top left corner. After 10 minutes of nothing, I held the power button to shut the MacBook down and tried again - same thing. I booted back into Leopard and tried Start Installation again - same problem. I remerged the boot camp partition, restarted the MacBook, then made a new partition and tried the Vista DVD - again just that blinking cursor.

I tried everything mentioned previously (in this thread AND the link thread) and the PMU reset (shutdown, pull out power cord and other cords, wait 30 seconds, plug back in and restart) let me continue to install windows after partitioning the HD. Good luck! -

Recently my dad's Windows 7 (Ultimate 64-bit) on his Mac Pro has stopped working. It gets stuck at a black screen with a blinking cursor. I've waited at least five minutes and it doesn't do anything, I have to power it off.
However it starts up perfectly fine and intact in Parallels desktop. If I insert the original installation DVD and boot from the Disc that says 'Windows' it will boot into the partition and work fine, unless I press a key to boot from the DVD.
I find both these things to be strange. The partition is backed up, which is fine, but I'd rather not have to re-install it if possible.
I have booted from the DVD and tried to repair the disk. It said it found a problem with something related to startup and that it needed to restart to repair it. I clicked yes, and then held alt/opt and (I think wrongly) booted back into the disc rather than the Windows partition. However it now says that it can't detect any problems.
In the repair my computer section when booting from the DVD, it detects the OS as Windows Vista Business. I followed these steps I found online:
Fixed! Peroblem was I think using OEM, which Bootcamp advise against using... they advise to use retail only. Fixed like this:
1. Put the Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and then start your computer.
2. Hold down Option key till all available disks are displayed and select DVD. Press a key when you are prompted.
3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then 4. click Next.
5. Click Repair your computer.
6. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
7.In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
Type (these commands are safe)
Code: Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
Code: Bootrec.exe /FixBoot
Code: Bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd
*Press ENTER after each command.*
*Restart your computer.*
Done. Rockin'
FixMbr was successful, as was FixBoot. However RebuildBcd reported that it found no Windows installations.
Does anyone know what could be wrong here? I should note that recently I removed the drive Windows 7 is installed on and put it back in. Also Windows Updates probably have been done by my dad. Not sure if they could be the problem.Cult, welcome to the forum.
It sounds like you have a failing power supply unit (PSU). This will cause the symptoms that you describe. If the computer isn't getting enough power, it can cause numerous problems. I just ran `fsck` and found no errors.

New Hardrive and now blank screen with sleep light on
My warranty ran out on one of my mbp's, so I decided to install a new hardrive in one. I went through all the steps, and was very cautious. Now when I turn on the laptop the screen is blank and the sleep light stays on the entire time. I hear the cd-rom do some stuff but that's it. If anyone can help me figure out what happened it would be greatly appreciated.
Well problem solved, had to apply some pressure on top of the case by the left i/o and next thing you know I hear the beautiful chime

Hello my computer wont start up all i get is a black screen but i have a mouse cursor. after a little bit the computer will restart and do a automatic repair but nothing happens it just keeps on rebooting. i tired to do a bio update but it seems to not be working. there is no option in the bios to update or even in UEFI. i also did a harddrive test and got a Short DST Check fail (FAILURE ID: 909HVX-0007K0-WPU2XF-60WH03) but i still can get access to the harddrive using a Linux LiveUSB and all files are there. (Product Number Is : H5P60AAR#ABA)
It is possible to receive a false DST check but not common.
It doesn't mean your hard has failed but that it is in imminent danger of failing.
You can try again but this time using the Extended DST test.
But before doing anything I suggest you back up all your important data using that live Linux boot disk just in case.
Every hard disk manufacturer has their own diagnostic boot cd/usb. Google it.
You should create one and run it for your brand hard drive.
You should be able to determine which brand you have from the BIOS/UEFI hardware tab.
While your'e in there double check that your boot priority is set to hard drive first.
Your other issue seems to be the dreaded 'Automatic Repair Loop' which could be caused by your possibly failing hard dirve. I would fully diagnose the hard drive first.

7 months ago I got the recovery virus, CherylG helped me by recommending and giving directions to use the Kaspersky Rescue disk. I ran this and my Pavilion Notebook worked fine. Now it has returned. I tried re-running the Kaspersky Rescue disk. It said the databases were obsolete. I tried updating the disk and databases but still can't get it to work. Any suggestions?
I understand a recovery virus has returned.
Do you recall what the name of the specific virus is?
Did the rescue disk update successfully and not remove the virus or did it fail to update?
This version is the newest rescue disk from Kaspersky. Since the original one isn't working anymore, I recommend making a new one from this download.

Blank Screen with cursor after login Windows 7, Unable to start new tasks
My problem is similar to the well know Windows 7 Black Screen as referenced by Prevx, though different. When I boot my Windows 7 computer, the login screen appears as always. Following entering the password for default user,
the screen will give the impression of login, but the final result is a plain black screen with the cursor only. The black screen appears indefinitely and the Windows GUI never appears. The only available option from booting in normal mode with this is Ctrl-Alt-Del
(Task Manager). From analyzing another computer with Windows 7 Professional, my Task Manager is missing the following user processes: dwm.exe, explorer.exe, and taskhost.exe. Additionally, it is missing the following system processes (possibly irrelevant):
spoolsv.exe and wmiprvse.exe.
When I attempt to start a new process using Windows Task Manager, an error message will appear saying “Windows Task Manager has stopped working” and forces you to close Windows Task Manager. This includes starting
any process such as cmd or explorer.
I attempted to boot into safe mode.
The result was the same as above. Then I attempted booting into safe mode with command prompt. This showed some hope. Following authentification from the login screen, the command prompt appears with the same blank screen with a cursor behind it. Initially
I attempted to run msconfig.msc to run a clean startup. System Configuration Utilities opens briefly then displays the error same as above. “System Configuration Utility has stopped working” and again forces the program to close. Then I tried to
open regedit. This works with no error messages! So I have access to the registry, but have no idea what I should modify to get my computer running normally.
Things I have tried:

Restoring to last know good configuration. (No result)

Repairing Windows configuration. (No result)
3)
Scanning the drive 3 separate times for viruses with both Avast and Symantec. (No viruses detected)

You have know your desktop
#3 Go on add-remove programme
3a) Go on windows add-remove
3b) Remove internet explorer
ok-ok-ok - untill it's remove and ask to restart
#4 No more problem. You have to go on the net with chrome or firefox.
