Will a new router increase my broadband speed in this configuration

How much (if at all) can I increase my broadband speed by getting a faster router. Here's my config:
DSL line --> DSL modem --> Lynksys BEFSR41 Router --> Ethernet cat-5 wiring in house --> TimeCapsule WiFi
The computers using this network are an Intel iMac (10.6), a PowerPC iMac (10.4), and two Intel MacBooks (10.6).
The modem/router are located in an in-wall distribution box in a utility room. I want to keep the hardwired ethernet available in case the WiFi quits temporarily. The TimeCapsule is in a good location (top shelf bookcase on first floor) for coverage of my 2-story house. In principle could eliminate the Lynksys modem, and use the TC as the primary router, but it would be difficult to physical locate the TC where it could both distribute to the house ethernet and have good radio reception.
Testing via the hardwire ethernet (using Speakeasy and speedtest.net) shows download and upload speed 1.27Mbps and 0.32Mb/s. My ISP is pacbell.net. I get the same result via my W-Fi. Speedtest.net tells me my result is about 40% of the average for pacbell.net to my zip code 94301.
I've heard there are much faster routers than the BEFSR41, but I don't know if my internet speed is limited by my current router or by pacbell's DSL service.
Any insights would be appreciated.

Will a new router increase my broadband speed
No...your speed is only going to be as fast as your weekest link, which in your case is the DSL modem and the connection speed package you subsribe to.

  • Will increasing my broadband speed help my Network Extender Perform Better?

Hello,  sorry if this isn't posted in the correct area.  I'm new to this community and couldn't find a Network Extender specific category.
Background: I live in a "low spot" and have shoddy phone service in my home.  As a result, I purchased a Network Extender about 1.5 years ago.
I've been limping along for some time with my 1.0 Mbps basic internet service but am now working from home frequently and taking calls though the day and if my internet is being used by anything else in the home (PC, iPad, Kindle - etc).  my calls either get really choppy or I drop the call.  Since I'm working from home computer based this is quite annoying and I'm finally to the point that I'm just going to get a home phone if I can't figure out.
Question:  If I increase my broadband internet speed to perhaps a 10 or 12 Mbps will this help with the strength of the Network Extender and prevent calls getting choppy and/or dropped?
Also, I should add that my current internet service is advertised as a 768 Kbps but speed tests say it's 1.0 Mbps.  Also - between my husband and I we've had several different phones on the extender and all are the same so I don't believe it's phone-device related.
Thanks in advance for any input, it's greatly appreciated!

Verizon says the minimum should be 1Mbps, so even though a speed test might show that you get that speed, going on a rated 768Kbps sounds a little risky, especially when there is any contention for internet.
I would also check prices.  What will it cost to upgrade the internet speed vs getting a landline (perhaps as part of a bundle)?  Of course, upgrading the speed might have other benefits unrelated to calls (once you surf at higher speeds it is very hard to go back).
Also, doesn't the network extender still  use your wireless minutes for calls?  If so, you might want to look into other VoIP vendors where you use a landline type phone that plugs directly into your connection. This will still probably need you to upgrade your speed to work well, but you may be able to reduce your wireless minutes to offset the cost of the upgrade and the VoIP vendor.

  • Sudden vast increase in broadband speed

Hi, the last couple of days or so I've noticed my internet dropping off and when it happened again tonight, I ran a speed test, both on wholesale tester and speedtest.net, and instead of the usual 5meg that i normally get, im now getting 14megs.
my exchange (ESJED)is currently being converted to 21cn wbc (according to samknows) with an end date of this month.
is this whats caused my sudden increase in speed?

This is what I'm trying to find out though. Ive not been notified that I'm getting moved to anything new since I was moved to adslmax in august. Its only been because my broadband has been dropping maybe 4-5 times in the last week that I was concerned that I might have a slow speed. Sometimes Ive had to reboot the router completely, sometimes its came back on of its own accord.
In any case, I do in fact leave the router on 24/7 anyway. The only time it gets reset is when the connection drops completely and wont return, or if, for some strange reason, my house lights flicker.. then it kills my connection then too.

  • Will a new router improve download times?

I am new to apple tv and was disappointed when the first movie I rented told it would take 5 hours to download. After visting this forum, it sounds like that is pretty standard. I am fairly certain I have the fastest internet service my provider offers (I will check) though. However, are there other things I can do like upgrade my router? My wireless router is old probably at least 7 years old. Would a new router have any significant impact on download times? Also, what type of impact would connecting Apple TV via a wired connection have?
    Thanks,
    Ethan

A new router may help internal communications, it may even help with Internet speeds (but in most cases if it does help with Internet speeds, it would likely mean you could have achieved better speeds by adjusting settings on your older router)
Before considering a new router, there are a few things you could do to try to improve the current situation like changing location or channels or settings.
I certainly don't see any merit in the advice to try google tv, if you have download issues, you'll have them with other devices too.
What is your Internet connection speed.

  • Router killing my broadband speed

I'm running a Cisco E4200V2 router with the latest firmware (2.1.4.12284) on an iMac running OS X 10.8. My ISP is providing 15Mbps to my modem, which I've confirmed by connecting directly to it without the router. Once I put the router back in the path, my broadband speed drops to about 6 Mbps. Is this the best I can expect from this router?

There are factors why you experience this issue: ISP problem or the router. Try to connect it directly to the modem and check the speed test from there. If the modem is fine, perhaps you can update the router’s firmware to 2.1.39. After update, reset and reconfigure. It should fix this issue.

  • My Broadband speed - Is this normal

Just have a couple of questions about my broadband speed.
First of all, I am not using a homehub, Ive never been issued with one, and when my BT supplied broadband router died (voyager 205), I just went and bought a new one which allowed me to connect more than one computer to my internet.
However At the moment, I am running only one pc (and an xbox which is rarely connected to the internet) and I am getting just over 2meg internet as shown on http://www.speedtest.net/result/1870787988.png.
I am unable to run the online speedchecker from bt (it throws up an error) and the download version also starts throwing up errors.
Ive had BT broadband since 2005, so I am not a new customer by any means, But, is 2meg really normal? The exchange is less than a quarter mile from my home so its presumably not a distance factor for me.
If it makes any difference, I am on the Bt Total Broadband option 3 (unlimited), dont download much, and really only use the internet for Online gaming and general light internet usage (and for online gaming such as world of warcraft, I had to install Leatrix to significantly lower the ping or my game was bordering on unplayable).
The computer is connected directly to the router via ethernet cable, and the router is connected directly to the telephone wall socket. If anyone can shed any light on this, and let me know whether this is a normal broadband speed I'd be extremely grateful as it never deviates from that 2 meg, even though I am apparantly able to recieve up to 8meg, and a certain other internet providor has been cold calling lately telling me that in fact, I can recieve up to 24 meg from my exchange,

ive tried the speed test in Chrome, Firefox, and internet explorer, and its all returning that it is unable to check the speed for my line at present, and the download checker wont work in any of those either.
Looking at the router settings, and I hope this is the right information

  • Tried everything to increase BT Broadband speed ov...

Quick background story to my question
Used to live a few hundred metres from the exchange. Had BE* for years. Life was good. T'internet was superspeedyfast. In time, we needed a new place to live. Wife and I moved to new house almost just before Christmas 2009. Life was good. T'internet was crappysuperslow. Discovered exchange was in different town 3.2km away (by the road at least) from my new house. Not a huge deal, I'll deal with slower speeds. So I was happy with around 300kb/s+ d/l on the week of activation.
Then t'internet got quickly slower. I phoned BT India. They were actually quite helpful!  End result was engineer appeared in my house sometime later. Engineer and his apprentice were awesomewickedsauce and dead pleasant and helpful. They together discovered a few things such as star wiring, crappy old BT face plates, and dodgy extensions (put there by previous owners). I agreed that it could all be ripped out for the sake of making things better. Sync was up to around 2.6mbs (don't recall exactly, but was over 300 kb/s download speed as before).
I finished reading the BT Speed Wizard tonight. End result was mostly everything that it suggested had been done over the past year, but just to be sure, I spent time scrubbing around making sure the wire from i-plate to homehub is not running alongside or near to any power cables, phones etc (hence the short uptime on stats below).
    My Set Up
External wire enters property directly in to newly i-plated socket. No extension cables.  Phone (digital cordless) to the left and Home-Hub V2 to the right (about five foot between them). Cable to router is along the wall high up away from any other cables. Cat5e cable connects my PC to the router (plugged in to port 4). There is a wireless PC but it's switched off just now. I don't have BTFON enabled.

It has been like this for a while now more or less (have seen SNR up to 13.9), but I've been too busy to have time to think about it in any detail (<3 Christmas holidays).
I have been reading through various forums and links this evening.
I tried http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php which suggested I should have an IP Profile of 3000kbs.
Also, I read this thread, and the guy there has similar stats to me: http://community.bt.com/t5/BB-in-Home/Slow-speeds/td-p/92315 and he was syncing around 3200kbs.
I know it's never going be a blistering fast line with current crappy exchange and no FTTL in the foreseeable future, but a few hundred extra KB/s would be the difference during peak-time between my family not being able to go online at the same time without impacting one anothers experience, or being able to stream an 360p vid on you-tube without it stuttering onscreen.
    The Questions / TLDNR
Other than moving house is there anything I can do to increase the speed? I'm reluctant to call BT India. I don't think there's anything new to report on the internal setup since the BT engineer was on-site earlier this year. Waiting to see the profile increase doesn't seem to help as I've been sitting on this problem for months now. If anything was going to happen it would have happened by now surely? Should I just be thankful for what I got? Could switching ISP yield better results or would that be worse (not a huge choice at the local exchange)? what about upgrading the router? How about switching to a business tarrif to take advantage of a lower contention ratio?
I'll post another speedtest in the morning.
Any hints or tips you can give would be most gratefully received.

    Hi Imjolly,
Thanks for input, much appreciated. I'm still grasping at the fundamentals of all the stats and how to interpret them, so it really helps to have others input. The fact that a 3G mobile has a faster d/l speed is maddening. I'd like to ensure I've tried everything possible to improve the connection with BT before I start looking elsewhere or just wait until O2 mobile only will do the job and remove the landline completely.
I understand that with a longer line length, SNR margin is higher to allow greater headroom across the longer distance, but that each point of SNR is worth more than a few KB. If they are overcompensating at the exchange side and I have a higher SNR than is required, there is hope for me yet. Though with error seconds creeping up, perhaps that's why they have to maintain a higher margin
Also with respects to connection uptime. I was moving cables around just to ensure power cords that could be interfering with the wire from router to i-plate were out of the way. I had to unplug it at that point to untangle some of the cables. Previous to that I'd been away for Christmas, so was switched off.
Otherwise it stays on 24/7. Problem is that it's been connected for weeks at a time and it's never gotten back to what I witnessed early days and after the engineer visit.
here's the stats a few more hours on.

  • New Router Hub 3 & Broadband Monitor Suggests High...

I have just replaced my ADSL Voyager router with a BT Hub type 3.
I am a low Broadband user, about, 0.25/day but checking the usage monitor today my usage per day for July has increased to 0.3/ day
Has the hub caused this or have BT a problem?
    How do I evaluate?

Im reviving this thread, so far from the phone box upstairs Ive shortened the cable, It still goes into my room but now instead of having a ridiculous 15m amount of calbing unused Its a straight 3m from the other room to mine.
    This has slightly improoved things.
However the hub still suffers and drops the broadband connection when under "stress" when the phone rings it sometimes drops, and when downloading files it drops halfway through if the file is large which is a massive pain.
On the downstairs master socket I removed the facia and did a quiet line test on the inside socket, there was no noise. I used a corded phone. I wasnt sure if it mattered but I tested all other sockets using this method and none had any noise.
I phoned BT and was advised to take the hub closest to the master socket, but if i do this I have no wireless card in my PC so cannot connect, The obvious option is to get a wireless card but that will cost money. As will buying the power lines.
Any suggestions? I guess plugging the hub in downstairs and trying to connect to something is the best option.
    Any advice please?

  • Broadband speed slowdown recently

    Hi,
I used to get around 1.2mb/sec download speeds until a couple of months ago. Now I'm getting 600-700kb/sec download speed. Think my speedchecker gave me 8-9mbps before, now it's down to 6mbps. Not sure what happened but I'd like to know if there's anything that can be done to get my broadband speed back up to speed. I have not changed anything at all in my setup btw, just checked the filters too, replaced with a new one and still the same slow speed.

if you cannot maintain a 3 day + connection there is no point in getting a noise margin reset as the noise margin will only rise again
Have you tried the quiet line test dial 17070 option 2 you should hear no noise any noise heard should be reported to BT Faults on 151 with no mention of broadband in the call

  • Advertised Broadband Speeds.

I entered into a 12-month contract extension with BT on 21st April, 2014 with the promise of an increase in broadband speed to an estimated 17 Mbps from my present 6.7. The new contract started on 29th April, 2014, but the increase in speed never took place. Turns out there was a capacity problem in the local exchange, which was resolved today, and ADSL 2+ is now available. A neighbour had broadband installed by the Post Office at the beginning of July and he is testing at 17.45 Mbps. (We are 298 metres from the exchange as the crow flies.) I have been advised to post my stats here to see if anything can be done to transfer me to ADSL 2.

i have an old iphone 3gs which is backed up on itunes. bought a new iphone 4gs and need to back it up. will syncing new phone erase old 3gs data?

This is not very iTunes Public Site Manager related... but I was in the same situation as you a little while ago.
    1 - Sync/back up your old 3gs.
2 - Activatie your new phone when connected to itunes via cable and it will ask you if you want to restore our old phone.
    3 - ???
    4 - profitt!
might also work with icloud but i have not tried that method.

  • Broadband speed collapsed

I've had recurrent problems with BT Broadband speed falling this year. Had been able to get 5-6Mb, but it reduced earlier in the year to less than 2Mb. BT initially refused to admit there was a problem, but eventually did something to the line and I was getting 6-7Mb.
But after a month of that, the speed has now collapsed to 0.4Mb. Nothing's changed with my setup and I get just the same speed from the test socket.
I've had no response at all from emailing BT. Any ideas how to get someone at BT to look at this seriously?

More than 48 hours after emailing BT, someone called on my mobile. I wasn't at home, so she fixed a suitable time to call back - and, of course, she never did.
How does one actually make contact with these people?

  • Will broadband speed increase if i change to infi...

    Well here i am again.
posted topic on broadband forum will my line speed increase if i change to infinity - as infinity speed up to 78 Mb/s now available on my line - According to BT ?
was skeptical - but decided to order BT infinity and report back
     Herein is report.
Order accepted - line siutable for infinity.
Open reach engineer came to connect me this morning.
Guess what? back to my old broadband at 0.5 Mb/s
Unable to connect me to infinity, signal refused to sync apparently.
Openreach engineer thinks i have too much copper wire btween me and the fibre optic cabinet - 6.7 kms he reckons. whivch was my point originally but asuccession of BT departments assured me Infinity was available and would work on my line .
so iam back where i started. although i do know now where my nearest cabinet is
left with just a few questions really ?
Why did BT write to me suggesting change to infinity?
Why on BT site if i type number in does it say Infinity availableup to 78 Mb/s?
why did BT sales accept my order without apparently checking line speed?
Has anyone any thoughts on my next move?
Presumably Bt sales will come back to me .
The whole saga reflects badly On BT

i seem to be repeating myself here here is what the checker says:-

BT always offers you the best speed possible on your line. The speed prediction we have given here is an estimate, however download speeds can vary and the actual download speed will fall within a range. The range is an indication of the speed that other similar lines across the UK have achieved for their broadband service; this is generally within 1-2 Mb higher or lower than your single estimated speed quoted.
The actual speed is dependent on several factors such as the product option you choose, the processing power of your computer, how many people are using your broadband connection at the same time, whether you use a wireless or cable connection, the speed of the websites that you visit and how we're managing the network. Speeds can be lower at peak times - peak times are evenings and weekends.
In the first ten days you may see your speed go up and down. When using a postcode only (rather than a telephone number) the checker results are less accurate. It uses a best guess of where you live based on the centre point of the postcode and not the exact routing of the line to your address, and so the result must be treated with caution. When we are able to provide a date for future fibre availability, it is indicative only and subject to change.''
The fact is this is not the case , the Bt wholesale checker for my number gives a similar reply:

They are showing up now but when i posted all i could see was a blank triangle(which means the admin/mods hadn't approved them).
Is your line dropping the connection (lights on the router changing colour)or is it stalling (lights staying the same colour)?
Regarding a 5ghz router there are many dual band routers out there that will do the job your after just fine just make sure they support PPPoA.
And for future reference i will post the details below you can use to connect a new router to the Sky network(ignore that is says o2 as these were release by Sky when they bought o2/BE broadband so those customers could use their own routers on Sky).
    1. Enter the following details within the routers Graphical User Interface (GUI):
    Encapsulation: PPPoA (PPP over ATM)
    login/username: [email protected]
    Idle Timeout: 0
Internet IP Address: Get Dynamically from ISP
Domain Name Server (DNS) Address: Get Automatically From ISP
    NAT: Enable
    Multiplexing Method: VC-BASED
    VPI: 0
    VCI: 38
