Will a QT movie play on other computers if . . .

Hi,
We're using a FCPro timeline set up as 422 Prores. If I export a SC QT movie of our master . . . will other computers be able to play that QT movie if they don't have FCPro loaded?
I know when we were using DVCPRO HD timelines, other computers had to have the DVCPRO HD codec installed - which they normally wouldn't have to do - but with that codec, the exported Self Contained QT movie would NOT play on a computer with regular QT on it. (They needed that special codec.)
But with a Prores 422 export - I thought all computers would play that QT? Or am I wrong?
Thanks
Larry

Doug, you're a GEM! And I thank you for your response - because of you - I dug deeper and learned more! Hohoho and a very funny response, too.
Actually, I'm pretty experienced with FCPro - but I do seem to have huge gaps of knowledge! Very huge, sometimes!
And you are quite right - you'll never go wrong with h.264 - although if I drop it on a timeline and render it - it'll edit fine - but you KNOW that! But for many without FCPro - they couldn't - so it was a good answer!
Meanwhile, here's some test footage I shot with a new camera about 2 years ago - I'm sure you'll enjoy the footage . . .

  • .mov to DVD to play on other computers

I have a .mov file on my desktop that plays just fine with QT.
If I burn the file using the Finder's Burn Folder or make a data disc using Toast, the resulting .mov file on the burned DVD will not play on my computer.
    What am I doing wrong?
I simply want to put the .mov file on a DVD so that it will play on other computers, not so it will play on a DVD player.

Toast no longer supports crossover copying of Mac and PC DVD's. The older versions (Toast 10.2) did because they embedded "autorun" data so the DVD would be read by Windows. According to the techs at Toast, the only way to get a Mac made .mov (etc) file to play on a PC or Mac/PC is to include some type of PC autorun software with the transfer. This is done by options-more-add autorun. Of course, the catch 22 is that there is no easy way to do this. I'm done with Toast.

  • Inability of dvd disc to play on other computers

After burning a disc using premiere elements 2.0 it will not play in other computers.
It will play on stand alone dvd players with a tv. but not on computers
Why?? Am I missing something in the process?

    Jim,
I see that you found the PE forum.
As I mentioned in the PrP forum, it is likely that the computers do not have DVD software players. If they do, then it might be that Autorun is off on the multi-drives. I have mine turned off on my workstation. If there IS a DVD software player available, you might need to navigate with it, to the multi-drive. Cyberlink's PowerDVD needs this for me. If I pop in a DVD, nothing happens. I open PowerDVD and point it to the multi-drive with the DVD, and it plays fine.
If your DVD's play on set-top players fine, you have a good DVD. You need to explore those computers to see what they have, or do not have. Many computers do not come with DVD software players installed.
    Good luck,

  • "Export as Quicktime Movie" -- won't play on other computers

When I use the "Export as Quicktime Movie" option and try to play it back on a Mac without FCP installed, it is missing components and won't play back in Quicktime Player. Of course, I can export with various compressions and then it's fine, but sometimes I want that big "original" file. Any thoughts? Thanks!
    Message was edited by: elisenew

You do need the codec you are exporting to installed in the other machine if you wish to play the exported file. A variety of codecs are available only with FCP installed.
A couple of possible solutions are a very high res H.264 or Download [ProRes decoder|http://support.apple.com/downloads/AppleProRes_QuickTime_Decoder_1_0_forMac] to share a prores file between machines.

  • Why won't QT movies play on some computers?

when i export from FCP 5 using H.264 or mpeg4, i'm getting mixed results with windows users - most can play the files just fine, but there's been a few, with QT 7 installed, that report seeing the QT player but not being able to see and/or hear video/audio. however, when i convert using Sorrenson3, that solves the problem but i'm still baffled why the issues on some windows machines and not others, all w/QT 7.
any insight would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks,

hmmmnnn... am i the only one having these issues? seems odd 'cause i've spoken with another FCP user who had the exact same problems with their QT files on the web.
could it be a speed/memory/video card issues on the windows computers? i'm throwing that out there 'cause the 2 machines i know of that are having the problems viewing the movies are run-of-the-mill dell boxes... nothing fancy just standard workstations, both bought in the last 2yrs.

  • Will a Quicktime movie play on a TV?

I am using OS 10.3.9 and Quicktime pro 7.0.2. I also have the MPEG2 plug-in installed. Can I make a move that will play on a regular DVD player and a TV?

I ain't no expert; I'm just a learner and experimentor. That said...
I play any and all QT movies from my laptop to pretty much any TV. I've been experimenting with compressing movie files in different formats so they are not so large a file size. Most currently I am encoding in AVI (DivX- free downloads) and in Toast's Video CD format. I just don't burn it to a CD or DVD disc. I leave the newly encoded Video CD (which is now a MPEG-1 muxed file) on my hard drive. Likewise if I created an AVI file. This works with other export options, you don't need Toast. (Read more below).
All you need to do is connect a video-out source from your computer to any cheap old RCA type plugs and plug those into the video-in port on most TV's. Likewise with the audio. (On the computer side, for audio, I use the headphone or Mic out port). Then open your QT movie and from the Movie drop-down menu, select Present Movie. It's great!
That said, here are the hurdles:
You need to be able to get the video signal out from your computer. My G4 laptop has a video-out port that has a small connector that on one side, fits the computer port, and on the other side has one standard RCA output port and one SVideo port. By RCA plug I am referring to the regular old cables you use in the back on most stereos. Super cheap in Radio Shack. And most TV's have input ports for those, some on the back, some on the front. If not, you can plug into a regular VCR, which would be connected to the TV. All VCR's have RCA ports. To view, set the TV or VCR to the channel or port where your cable is plugged in. On my VCR I select Video 1, which camoes after the last channel I get. On a TV, I select something similar. Fiddle around.
Older Macs had RCA ports. Newer ones have ways to do it but need some form of adaptor. You might even get by using your regular Monitor out port, with a adaptor that has RCA plugs at the other end.
Once past the hurdle of cable connection (not a big deal) the playing of the movie to TV is easy. For this reason, I recommend not creating too high a quality file. You won't need it. I took a 15 GB iMovie file and exported it in QT 6.5.2 Pro using the Toast (6.0) Video CD option. It produced a 400 MB (yes, MB, not GB) file. The only hitch with that is it produces a 320x240 movie. Blown up too large looks poor. So I use QT>Movie>Present Movie>Double. That shows the movie in a black border but pretty large and very clear. Or if you encode/compress using other means - like DV stream, or MPEG-4, you'll be able to play the movie in QT Full Screen mode. Either way, I like what this does. And I'm still experimenting/learning. Good luck.

  • HT3819 why wont some music tracks play on other computers

I cant get itunes to play some tracks I imported from itunes on my other computer in home sharing. Does anyone know why this happens and how can i fix it?

Wow, there is more to this that I thought.  I tried all sorts of things, saving as various files.  I ended up saving as a mp4 file and it worked fine on the other computer.  But the quality is really poor.
    In answer to Martin's questions.
I have a brand new MBP, Lion, FCE 4HD
clips came from a sony HD camera, default settings.
FCE is set up for HD Easy Set up, using the AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1440X1080i50 setting
I did render the sequence, didn't help with .mov export
To export I went to File, Export, QuickTime Movie.  That didn't work, so then I went to File, Export, QuickTime Conversion, that still didn't work for the .mov file, so then had to choose MPEG 4.
I just want an easy way to export a movie clip, and allow anyone I send it to, to be able to view it.  I wish I could do it with .mov as the quality is better.  Is there a way?  What codec should I use?  And how do I change my settings to that codec?

  • IPod shuffle will not charge when connected to other computers.

A girl I work with had me load her shuffle on my computer. I set it up and synced with my itunes and everything worked well. Then the battery ran out and she tried to connect it to a computer at work and it said that it was already synced with an itunes library. She left it plugged for a few hours anyway and when she unplugged it there was no charge in it. Both computers are iMacs and it was plugged into a usb on the back of the computer. Thanks dudes.

In Settings in iTunes (while shuffle is plugged in) UNcheck "Open iTunes when this iPod is attached) and click apply... This will allow charging w/o iTunes involvement.

  • HDV 1080i60: Output high quality video that will work on other computers?

    Hi,
I just made a quicktime movie (not conversion) of my HDV 1080i60 video project, but it will not play on other computers...
    My question:
What is the best workflow for outputting a HQ HDV movie, from FCP6, that will play on other computers/platforms?
    Please help! On a deadline.

    Thanks Studio!!!
    I will use H.264.
I also discovered that copying the AppleHDVCodec.component (from my HD >> Library >> Quicktime folder) to the other Mac, will allow me to play the video too... But optimally, I would like to not worry about codecs.
Anyway, many many many thanks Studio! You rock!
    Have a great night.
    Cheers,
    Micky

    Hello:
This is not an area I have much experience in......I rarely insert DVDs and I have never had a similar problem.
When the DVD is in the drive (and DVD players is open) click on File>get disk info.

  • Exported movie will not play on other computer

I made my first FCE4 movie today asa test, just to get teh hang of the basics of LiveType and rendering effects. I exported as Quicktime Movie, and the .mov plays great on my MacBook.
I transferred the file to my Windows XP desktop, and the file will not play on any player at all, including quicktime. I have the latest version of Quicktime and VLC, and also Media Player Classics, and all of them will play the audio but no video. VLC gives an error of "VLC does not support the audio or video format "icod"."
Any help here? I also tried re encoding the movie using handbrake on windows, and handbrake will not recognize it either. I transferred the file to my PC a second time to account for data corruption during transfer and same result.

I imported a couple clips from a camcorder in AVCHD 1920x1080 29.97 fps.just added some effects such as an insect eye and an earthquake for experimentation purposes, along with a quicktime transition between the two clips. Also a LiveType sequence in the beginning.
Using "Export quicktime movie" will allow the video to play on either QT or FCE4 on the originating machine, no problem, but no other player on the originating machine can play the video (audio is fine), and no player at all including latest version of QT can play it on other machines. From reading it sounded like an issue of "make movie self-contained" was checked or unchecked but i have tried both ways and it didn't correct the problem.
I attempted to export with quicktime conversion. I have tried 3 different codecs, and different setting that retained the 16:9 ratio, and each time the clip gets cropped on both planes like a zoom effect even though it does indeed remain 16:9.

  • No sound cant play videos on other computers, movie maker doesnt work VADO HD

well not much good as a camcorder:
wont play HD video on other computers even if codecs are downloaded
wont play sound ANYWHERE (sound is there if i put in Windows moviemaker, but no picture)
Movie maker software errors out when tryin to load videos
Uploaded new firmware, no resolution to issues
Also, if i change the name of a file in windows it no longer shows up on the vado or vado software
    Ideas anyone?

Q On my new Vista machine, I decided just to install K-lite codec pack (Standard edition). This installs ffdshow and a nice media player.
When my codecs get messed up by some other video product installation, i just reinstall it. Works well so far.

More than likely your clients aren't all running the recommended minimum Mac G5 dual 2.0MHZ or Windows 3.0 Intel Pentium D platform required for "unlimited" data rate playback of H.264 HD content. Try limiting your video data rate to something in the 4.0-8.0 Mbps range (2.0-4.0 Mbps for even older, slower machines) and see if clients get smooth playback.

  • Cant play burned CD's on other computers/cd players

The last few cd's I have burned will not play in my cars cd player. It will load and then play track one, but no sound comes out and I cant move through tracks. Any ideas? Help!!

I have the same problem - but, regretably, no solution yet in sight.
Up until a few weeks ago, I had a perfectly serviceable Pioneer DVR-109 Combo drive in my Dual 1GHz G4. It had given good results consistently until it finally failed to either read DVD-ROM or write anything at all. No complaints there, as it had given me nearly 6 years of service and "owed me nothing", as we say over here.
I rang my local Apple Reseller (Galmac Computers of Galway) for a replacement and was sold a Liteon LH20A1P Superdrive.
This will read DVD OK (haven't tried writes yet - reasons will be clear) but will not write an audio CD which can be read in anything except a professional Denon DN4000 deck (costing over €1000). A replacement of the same model gives the same result. Previously, the Pioneer would write, even at 48x, and every disc would play in every machine in the studio, house or car. No change in media has occured in the meantime. I use very reliable PMD Magnetics Audio CD-R media, as suupplied by StudioSpares of London to all leading recording establishments, and have never once had a bum burn with any of them.
The clue comes when I look in System Profiler and find that the Liteon drive, sold to me by an Apple dealer, comes up as "burn unsupported" ! ! !
Beware the Liteon LH-20A1P drive, folks.
I think I'll stick to names like Sony and Pioneer, even if it means ditching my Apple reseller as a source ............
