Will a Quicktime movie play on a TV?

I am using OS 10.3.9 and Quicktime pro 7.0.2. I also have the MPEG2 plug-in installed. Can I make a move that will play on a regular DVD player and a TV?

I ain't no expert; I'm just a learner and experimentor. That said...
I play any and all QT movies from my laptop to pretty much any TV. I've been experimenting with compressing movie files in different formats so they are not so large a file size. Most currently I am encoding in AVI (DivX- free downloads) and in Toast's Video CD format. I just don't burn it to a CD or DVD disc. I leave the newly encoded Video CD (which is now a MPEG-1 muxed file) on my hard drive. Likewise if I created an AVI file. This works with other export options, you don't need Toast. (Read more below).
All you need to do is connect a video-out source from your computer to any cheap old RCA type plugs and plug those into the video-in port on most TV's. Likewise with the audio. (On the computer side, for audio, I use the headphone or Mic out port). Then open your QT movie and from the Movie drop-down menu, select Present Movie. It's great!
That said, here are the hurdles:
You need to be able to get the video signal out from your computer. My G4 laptop has a video-out port that has a small connector that on one side, fits the computer port, and on the other side has one standard RCA output port and one SVideo port. By RCA plug I am referring to the regular old cables you use in the back on most stereos. Super cheap in Radio Shack. And most TV's have input ports for those, some on the back, some on the front. If not, you can plug into a regular VCR, which would be connected to the TV. All VCR's have RCA ports. To view, set the TV or VCR to the channel or port where your cable is plugged in. On my VCR I select Video 1, which camoes after the last channel I get. On a TV, I select something similar. Fiddle around.
Older Macs had RCA ports. Newer ones have ways to do it but need some form of adaptor. You might even get by using your regular Monitor out port, with a adaptor that has RCA plugs at the other end.
Once past the hurdle of cable connection (not a big deal) the playing of the movie to TV is easy. For this reason, I recommend not creating too high a quality file. You won't need it. I took a 15 GB iMovie file and exported it in QT 6.5.2 Pro using the Toast (6.0) Video CD option. It produced a 400 MB (yes, MB, not GB) file. The only hitch with that is it produces a 320x240 movie. Blown up too large looks poor. So I use QT>Movie>Present Movie>Double. That shows the movie in a black border but pretty large and very clear. Or if you encode/compress using other means - like DV stream, or MPEG-4, you'll be able to play the movie in QT Full Screen mode. Either way, I like what this does. And I'm still experimenting/learning. Good luck.

Why do only some QuickTime movies play on the iPhone?
I have noticed that only some QuickTime movies play on the iPhone, does anyone know why?
    Thanks,

Depends on how the movies are encoded for Quicktime (i.e. which compression/codec). The iPhone supports only H.264 video.

  • My older M-JPEG quicktime movies play black in Quicktime and Keynote

I was just recently asked to give a presentation that I had put together 3 years ago in Keynote.  All of my quicktime movies that Keynote were using were M-JPEG and used to all play great the last time I opened my file.  Since Then I've updated my OS to 10.7.1, I have a Macbook Pro, Quicktime 10.1, Keynote 09,  but also have Quicktime Pro.
When I play my keynote, all of my movies come up black when they play.  If I try and open my quicktime movies directly and play them in Quicktime or Quicktime pro, they also come up black.  But I can open it in VLC and it plays fine.
I tried to start converting the quicktime movies using SmartConverter, but it's time consuming since I have over 50 quicktime movies that this keynote is referencing.  Some of the quicktime movies are also erroring out too when trying to convert them.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with M-JPEG quicktime movies that used to work just fine?  Anything I could do across the board to be able to use these rather than converting them all?
    Thanks,
    Dale

QuickTime in Lion is not reliable as of 10.7.1. The next OS update will fix this. Should be out tomorrow when Apple updates all of its software for iCloud.
See if your problems are gone then.

  • Quicktime movies play a half scrambled screen  in Windows XP with QT7

Sometimes the quicktime movies in windows xp will only play 1/2 screen and thats scrambled. The lower part of screen is usually a pixaly blue color. The Apple quicktime movies for fcp demos are like that. The same files play fine on my mac. What can I do to correct this if anything.
I am running the latest version of quicktime for windows
    Thanks,

Found info needed at another post here at the Apple Website.

  • Can a QuickTime movie play for more than 60 seconds per page

Can a Quicktime movie be set to play for more than 1 minute per page in Keynote. I have clips that run up to 3 minutes. For now I have pulled the clip into 3 different pages and set the times to match but I get a 10 second delay between the pages that is very distracting.

Yes I am trying to set up an automatic transition after the movie has played. I have still photos between the movies. I want the entire presentation to be self running. I did use the special builds in and out and have the action set at none. The movie clip will not run more than 60 seconds?

  • Why doesn't QuickTime movies play on iPad?

You can only use QuickTime Player 7 to play that 12 year old format.

  • FCP7 HELP - Exported quicktime mov plays differently than what I edited on the timeline. The playback shows the clips with ins and outs that are different than what I set in the clips when I edited - some are too early and the clips don't playback

    Please help ASAP.
    Specs: IOS 10.6.8
    Processor 2.4GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 -- Everything is edited, sourced, and stored on an 2TB external hard drive to make things go faster.
    Editing with FCP 7
When I export the sequence I edited with quicktime, the playback video is very different from what I edited on the timeline. The playback has the clips with ins and outs that are way off than what I cut, and some of the clips don't show at all or have changed transitions. However when I play in the timeline in FCP, the sequence is fine, just the way I cut it.
The source of the clips was one long .mov that I cut into clips for the timeline. Everything has gone smoothly but the exported .mov is just so different.
How can I get the time codes of the clips to be the same in the exported .movs? I just want the quicktime .mov to represent my edit exactly.
This video is due tomorrow - if the solution is too time consuming, can I play within the FCP player window and Log and Capture?
    Thanks,
    MV

What is your source material? Is it H.264? FCP does not work correctly with that material.
Click on a source clip in the FCP Browser, and once selected, type Command + 9 to see the item properties for the clip. Either report those properties, or take a screen shot of the item properties, and post that here.
Next, click anywhere in your timeline, and then type Command + 0 {zero} to see your Sequence Settings. Either report those Sequence Settings, or take a screen shot of the Sequence Settings and post that here.

  • Help! Quicktime Movies playing only five still frames

When I try and play quicktime movies on my PC (Windows Vista) they play back with sound, but only five still frames from the movie play on the screen. How do i fix the problem?
I'm running windows vista and Quicktime 7.3.1. The problem shouldn't be the video card as all my other video player applications playback fine.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi,
I have found the solution to this problem I presented.
Sorry, I didn't realize that a computer monitor cannot support these images accurately.
    http://library.creativecow.net/articles/rossshane/fcpfaq.php
I had a Canopus ADVC-110 sitting right here.
Plugged it up to the TV,
    and the images appeared fine.
But this brings up one more question:
Is there a way to have all these images from Final Cut accurately displayed on a computer monitor ?
I've got a lot of more of them around than TVs . . .
Sorry to have bothered you with this, but I would appreciate further information on displaying the images on a computer monitor.
    Thanks !

  • Quicktime Movies playing 4:3 in Widescreen Menus???

I have exported a 30 second Quicktime movie that was shot and edited in Anamorphic in Final Cut Pro by doing the following:
    1) File --- Export ----- Quicktime Movie --- Current Settings ---- Video Only
I then set up the Movie Theatre opening menu in DVD Studio Pro in 16:9 Mode. I then imported the 30 second Quicktime movie that I just made in DVD SP and put it in the menu's drop zone. When I went to simulate the menu, the menu was playing in 4:3 mode in the 16:9 drop zone. Heads are getting cut off.
What am I doing wrong? Am I exporting wrong from FCP or is there a menu button or drop zone button that I am not pressing in DVD SP that I should be?
All I want to happen is that the QT movie that I exported from FCP play in perfect widescreen mode in a 16:9 menu in DVD SP.
    Thanks in advance

If the material is anamorphic then turn on the check mark in the anamorphic column in the browser and the video should display as 16:9.

  • Audio Dropouts on H.264 Quicktime movies playing from CD ROM or DVD ROM

I've been consistently having trouble getting H.264 .mov files saved on a CD-Rom or DVD-ROM to play back smoothly on Windows computers. The files will open, but there always seems to be sporadic audio dropouts, every 5-10 seconds the audio will drop out for half a second or so. This doesn't appear to be affecting the video. When the files are copied to the hard drive, the problem goes away, and the problem isn't present at all when playing back on Macs (regardless of whether the file is on a disc or on the HD).
I've read elsewhere on this forums that this is perhaps a data-rate problem, but this really doesn't make any sense to me, seeing as these are highly compressed, very small files (5 fps on the video, audio is AAC mono, 32kbps). Unless my understanding of data rate is completely backwards, a DVD Video or Audio CD would have a much higher data-rate. Seeing as Macs have no problem with this, I'm inclined to think it's some sort of problem with Windows' ability to handle AAC audio. If anyone has any experience with this, and/or ideas for a solution, I would greatly appreciate some feeback.
    Thanks!

If the problem goes away when the file is copied to the hard drive, then the problem is almost certainly with the data transfer rate from the CD/DVD drive. If the problem were with Windows decoding H.264 and/or AAC, the problem would also appear for files copies to the hard drive. H.264 is a pretty data-intensive format, so it could easily exceed the available data rate of a CD or DVD. (note that file size will make no difference; it's the data rate, which comes from a combination o the image size of the video and the compression of the video and audio tracks) that's the only factor).
Run QuickTime Player, open one of the videos, and open the Movie Inspector for the movie (Window -> Show Movie Inspector). Then take a look at the data rate and compare that to the data rate of your CD/DVD drive. If the drive's rate is lower, you have your answer. If it shows that it should be able to handle the data rate, you may need to update or replace the drivers for your CD/DVD drive and/or update the drive's firmware.
    Hope this helps.

  • QuickTime .mov plays upside-down in Windows Media Player

I know the cause of this: If you record using an iPhone with the volume buttons pointed at the ceiling, the resulting video plays upside-down in Windows Media Player. QuickTime is smart enough to correct and rotate automatically. Not so WMP. I have several clips that were recorded with the volume buttons pointed up. If I use QuickTime Player to rotate the clips, then they are correct when viewed in WMP, but upside-down in QuickTime Player!
Is there any way to fix these clips so they are right-side up in both worlds? Or is there no choice but to re-record everything with iPhone's volume buttons pointed at the floor?

I know the cause of this: If you record using an iPhone with the volume buttons pointed at the ceiling, the resulting video plays upside-down in Windows Media Player. QuickTime is smart enough to correct and rotate automatically. Not so WMP. I have several clips that were recorded with the volume buttons pointed up. Your assumptions are only partially correct. When you record the clip on your iPhone, the clip is recorded just as you see it in the WMP—i.e., upside down. What the iPhone does is records an addition file value that tells Apple media players which edge to display as the "top" during playback. Since third-party media players ignore this value, they display the clip in its original orientation which, in your case is upside down. When you flip the video orientation using QT 7 Pro, you're telling QT media players to play the file with an "upside down" orientation. By exporting the "flipped" orientation, you are, in fact, re-encoding the original "upside down" to a "right-side up" display but simultaneously telling all Apple media players to play the file upside down.
Is there any way to fix these clips so they are right-side up in both worlds? Or is there no choice but to re-record everything with iPhone's volume buttons pointed at the floor?
Actually, you can do either. That is, you can either "fix" the original recordings or re-record the the clips in a manner that avoids this problem. To "fix" your original files, simple open the files in an Apple media player (like QT 7 Pro) and export the files. The player will note the current "top" orientation and re-encode the content using the current display orientation for both QT and third-party players.

  • Will a QT movie play on other computers if . . .

    Hi,
We're using a FCPro timeline set up as 422 Prores. If I export a SC QT movie of our master . . . will other computers be able to play that QT movie if they don't have FCPro loaded?
I know when we were using DVCPRO HD timelines, other computers had to have the DVCPRO HD codec installed - which they normally wouldn't have to do - but with that codec, the exported Self Contained QT movie would NOT play on a computer with regular QT on it. (They needed that special codec.)
But with a Prores 422 export - I thought all computers would play that QT? Or am I wrong?
    Thanks
    Larry

Doug, you're a GEM! And I thank you for your response - because of you - I dug deeper and learned more! Hohoho and a very funny response, too.
Actually, I'm pretty experienced with FCPro - but I do seem to have huge gaps of knowledge! Very huge, sometimes!
And you are quite right - you'll never go wrong with h.264 - although if I drop it on a timeline and render it - it'll edit fine - but you KNOW that! But for many without FCPro - they couldn't - so it was a good answer!
Meanwhile, here's some test footage I shot with a new camera about 2 years ago - I'm sure you'll enjoy the footage . . .

  • Quicktime movies play slow

Hi, i`m having a big trouble (well, at least for me) with QT.
Every movie I play on it, plays very slow, almost frame by frame.
    My PC has the following:
    AMD Duron 900Mhz
    354 MB RAM
    SOYO K7VLM-B Motherboard
nVidia GeForce MX4000 with 64MB memory
Seagate 40 GB 5,400 rpm HDD
    Windows XP Pro SP2
    Quicktime 7.0.2
My other PC works fine with it. Of course it does, it has:
    Intel Celeron 1.7 Ghz
    768 MB RAM
    Acorp Motherboard
nVidia GeForce FX5200 with 128MB memory
    Samsung 80GB 7,200 rpm
    Windows XP Pro SP2
    Quicktime 7.0.2
So what's the problem i've with my duron machine? I have al minimum system requirements for using QT 7
    Thanks.
      Windows XP Pro

Your older computer is too underpowered to play videos encoded using H.264.
The "minimum" requirements are only for the install. Your machine can also not play HD content without slow playback and dropped frames.
If more than one size is offered (like the Movie Trailers pages) pick the smallest. Avoid anything with HD in its name.
My G3 Mac also has troubles with the newer content but plays older formats just fine.

  • Quicktime movie plays in Firefox logged in as admin not as user

I am logged into my mac running 10.7.3 Lion and Firefox 12.0 and I am unable to view quicktime videos on websites. I get a "Q" white background with a progress bar. It's as if it's trying to load. On the same machine I can log in as the Administrator account and it plays fine. Both accounts are admins on the machine. Same plugins in Firefox. I have cleared the cache and the temp files, problem persists. Can anyone assist?

I think that is problem of you'r Quicktime, and the compability so you can try installing a old version of Quicktime!

  • Quicktime movies playing in Safari 4

Hi, when I used to watch Quicktime playable movies in Safari's web browser such as .mpg .avi .wmv I used to be able to save them as I have Quicktime Pro but since updating to Safari 4 I have not seen the small downward arrow to the bottom right of the movie that allows me to save files.
Also the Quicktime bar appears and disappears when I move the cursor over the movie and I cannot control the volume of the movie any more.
What has happened, why has it changed?
I tried on two different Macs running Safari 4.
Any help would be great cheers

Thanks; but, maybe the below link is better to illustrate my issue:

    and
    http://www.farzadsf1gallery.com/f1sounds/brmv16.mp3
I use to be able to download and save this clip via Quicktime drop-down menu on the far right-hand side; since the upgrade to Safari 4 the drop-down menu is not present. I'm not trying to be a pain, but, I actual spent money for the Quicktime Pro to save mp3/skateboard video/uTube clips etc. I hope you can help.
