Will a ram upgrade help this computer.

My family has a 2008 iMac that I never use but my father uses for pictures, Skype etc. The specs are as follows
iMac
  Model Identifier:           iMac8,1
Processor Name:           Intel Core 2 Duo
  Processor Speed:           2.66 GHz
  Number of Processors:               1
  Total Number of Cores:               2
  L2 Cache:           6 MB
  Memory:           2 GB
Its running OSX 10.10.2 will a ram upgrade drastically help the performance, it is currently using 1.98 GB of 2 GB of ram when idle, any help would be appreciated 4 GB of ram needed or push it to 6 GB I read on OWC that it can accept 6 GB clarification on that would help. Sorry for the weird question I am a linux/windows user and I am not very knowledgeable with OSX.

2GB of RAM is the minimum system requirements to run Yosemite, 10.10.x. To get a better user experience upgrade the RAM on the 2008 iMac to 6GB, OWC (www.macsales.com) makes a kit for doing so. The link is listed below. You can also contact Crucial.com and they will sell a 1x2GB DIMM and a 1x4GB DIMM (6GB total) however they don't sell the two together as a kit.
The machine currently has 2 x 1GB DIMMs installed, therefore to get to 6GB both DIMMs need to be replaced.

I'm sorry to see that no one has answered this. I'm hoping Apple with reply to my support request, as I'm having the same issue. I really don't want to continue with iCloud at this point.

Having the same problem here. As a first time mac user, Apple has certainly made a bad first impression.
For me, the issue seems to occur when transferring files between computers that are connected to the same access point (when transferring files from wired computers on the network there is no issue). My vista laptop and every laptop I have tried has worked perfectly fine with this access point so I am 100% convinced it is the mac. Basically when I copy the files, after about 100mb, I am unable to access anything on the local network or internet until I restart Airport. The weird thing is that even though I am unable to access anything, the airport utility says it is connected. I might also note that the wireless signal strength is full.
If I can't get this figured out in a few days, this computer is going back to the store where it came from and I will officially label myself anti-mac. This type of issue is just unacceptable for something so main stream.

  • HP Envy 13 1030nr. Windows 7 64-bit. RAM upgrade help.

I just purchased a RAM upgrade for my Envy 13 and I was trying to figure out how exactly to access the memory module.  I couldn't find a youtube video for the Envy 13 and reading the maintenance manual provides only partial instructions to access the memory module.  It tells you what you need to do (Disconnect the TouchPad cable 2 from the low insertion force (LIF) connector on the system board) but not how to do it without damaging the computer.  I don't want to permanently sever a cable or anything so I'm looking for help via a link to a video or more detailed instructions on exactly how to safely access the memory module.
I was under the impression that this would be a quick replacement, but the more I read the manual, the more I think that this is going to be a little more complicated than opening up the bottom and removing the current RAM chip and replacing it with the one I have.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

    Here is the Manual:

Memory is indeed on the motherboard and getting there requires nearly complete disassembly. See Page 4-26. Not sure how this qualifies as "easy" and if you have not done this before you should get some help. And yes, keep careful track of those screws.

  • Please help - this computer already associated with an apple id

We have 5 family members all using the same mac, each with their own login and password.  Each person also has a seperate apple id/ itunes account - and we want to download all the music onto the hard drive.
When I go to do that for one of my daughters - it worked.  Now I am trying to do the second one - and it says that
this computer is already associated with an Apple ID
You can download past purchases on this computer with just one Apple ID every 90 days.  You cannot associate this computer with a different Apple ID for 83 days.
Any ideas...I am sure that this was developed for a good reason - but certainly not a family friendly policy where we are trying to upgrade and save everyone's stuff!
Any help or guidance is welcomed....

I don't have a good suggestion, but I can offer some educational material:
This article discusses what assocating a device to your Apple ID means.  It also talks about the differences between associating and authorizing.  That difference is probably the key to your success.

Hi! I just purchased a HP 240 G3 laptop, and would like to upgrade RAM to 8 GB.Here are the laptop specs as obtained from HP support assistant: Model: HP 240 G3 Notebook PCProduct No.: M1V30PA#ACJProcessor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU  N3540  @ 2.16GHzOS: Win 8.1Current RAM: 2GB  Hynix Semiconductor 1333MHz (DDR3) Can I go for a 8GB Transcend 1600 MHz, or should I just get 1333 MHz?Laptop supports upto 8 GB as per seller's brochure. There is only one slot. Any help would be greatly appreciated!Cheers.

Here is the Manual: Service manual The Manual actually says if I am reading it right that the Bay Trail models have 2 memory slots. I am skeptical. Does yours have a service cover for the memory? If not, it is going to require motherboard removal to get to it.  It appears that DDR3L-1600 memory is compatible with all versions of this model of laptop although some will downclock to 1333.  The Official HP Part number for an 8 gig module is: 8-GB (PC3L, 12800, 1600-MHz) 693374-001  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

  • Mac Mini Ram Upgrade Help!

    Hey Apple Users
Just bought my first Mac computer about 7 months ago, The minimac. Now this little monster is fast still for only 1gb of ram, and i'm running all high end Adobe softwear that requires 2 gb or more on regular computers, but she started to lag alittle using Adobe Premiere Pro cs4, so i decided to buy 4 gb of ram from ebay(brand New). I got the ram took my mini apart, did everything proper, destaticed myself etc and installed the 2 ram chips. after i went to boot up I got 1 Beep and a light every 10 secs maybe? So first thing i thought the ram was defective, So i tested the ram with my 1 gb in one slot and a 2 gb in the other and she booted fine and showed 3 gb ram. I tested the other 2 gb as well and worked fine. Don't understand why they wouldn't work together. So i said *** i'll just use 3gb instead and have a back up if the other 2 gb fails. Now after 2 hours of using my computer she froze solid, so i restarted and then i got a grey screen, 3 lights/3beeps. This means ram not recongized as far as i'v learned I may be wrong, so now i'm back with just my 1 gb in my comp running fine. Any ideas what could be the problem here?

  • Will the 'back up to this computer' setting in iTunes allow for storage of PDF files, etc. (non-iBooks content) on my computer for later retrieval, if need be?

Up until now, I have had the 'back up to iCloud' setting enabled in iTunes for my iOS devices. However, when I recently had to restore my devices 'as new', I discovered through the process that the only 'iBooks' app data that is stored in the cloud are basically iTunes book and Kindle(?) book data. None of the PDFs that I pulled off the web and stored in iBooks were backed up to iCloud.
If I change this setting to 'back up to my computer' will iTunes go ahead and back up those other PDFs, etc. on to my Mac or will I, going forward, have to make sure and back up all those items onto my Mac manually and individually?
*Note: I know about Docs in The Cloud with Pages and iWork on iOS and I use these services as well. This question, however is centering around iBooks and iCloud.

Syncing with your computer will delete data from his phone but you should be able to restore his backup.
    iOS: How to back up
However, he won't be able to play music purchased under a different iTunes account than the one his phone is signed into.  He can change the account to yours, but any apps he purchased under his account will no longer update, and any purchases he makes will go on your account.

  • Battery not recognised after ram upgrade - Help!

I just attempted a Ram memory upgrade that worked fine, but my battery stopped being recognised.
The battery was fine before, even so -  I bought a new one (I tested in a different computer - it worked there) - still doesn`t work.
I decided to put back the old RAM - still no working Battery.
Reseted the SMC and the NVRAM 500 times and nothing changes.
Already have the latest Firmware (Efi and SMC) for quite a long time, can`t reinstall it or downgrade it  (due to apple.). Apparently CD firmware restauration not available to my model ( original installation cd don`t work beacuse it is  a previous version of firmware?)
    What else can I do?
Is there any way to force a firmware installation ?

    Run an Apple Hardware Test:

Note an error free AHT is not definitive.
Check the connections on the MBP and the charger for dirt, debris and discoloration.  The pins on the charger are spring loaded and should move freely.
    Ciao.

  • I am not allowed to use upgrade on this computer ???

Itunes 7.6 keeps telling me, that I am not allowed
to use the Jan-update on my computer ? ? ?
It does not allow me to sync the upgrade
to my ipod touch FW 1.1.3 eventhough my Vista-PC
    is activated to Apple.
    Need help - thanks

    It works for me now.
I had to delete the folder C:\ProgramData\Apple Computer\iTunes\SC Info
Subsequently, I had to authorize my computer from the administrator account.
Seems that VISTA messes something up when you try to authorize the computer from a non administrator account.

  • RAM Upgrade Help for Acer Aspire V5-551-8401

I only see 1 RAM slot for my Acer Aspire V5-551-8401 and it has the factor 2GB RAM card loaded into it, yet my computer shows 4GB of total RAM, In not sure how. I'm running the factory installed Windows 8. Can I load a 4GB RAM into that slot instead? Am I just not seeing the 2nd slot? There appears to be soom copper thing screwed into the location where I would have expected to se a second RAM slot, and the copper continues up to the cooling fan. I wanted to increase the RAM to 8GB to see if it helps with performance (which is slow) but now became confused when I saw what I described above. • Envy M4-1015dx RAM Upgrade Help

    Hi,
I recently purchased 2 sticks of 8GB ram to replace the 2 sticks of 4GB currently in my Envy m4-1015dx notebook. But, I'm not sure where I need to open the laptop at. I would prefer to do this myself so if someone could perhaps detail or walk me through where I need to unscrew things, I would greatly appreciate it.

You'll need to eject the battery and then remove the service panel on the bottom.  You can see the illustrated parts in the manual posted above.  Let me know if you need anything else.

  • Will more ram speed this machine up

I have 1 gb of ram in my 1.67 powerbook. It has an 80gb hard drive. I have a fair amount of programs downloaded and pictures/songs in my itunes. If I double the ram will it speed up the computer significantly to where I'll really notice a differance. Its pretty fast overall, only when I switch from program to program and such that I see the circular colors spinning in the ying yang way or whatever that is.
How much does it cost to have an extra gig of ram installed? Is it possible? Will it help this computer?
    Thanks

A better test would be to open up (and open files with, if appropriate) the apps that you tend to use when you're "busiest" on your computer, and then see how your Activity Monitor reacts.
Note that the yellow area is actually not "page out" - it's the amount of RAM that your applications are actively using. The blue area is RAM used by a program but not active - so it's available to other programs or the system. The green area is completely unused. When you think about it, there's actually no point having completely unused RAM - it doesn't benefit your computer in any way if it's not being used. A good balance would be to have all your RAM used by your apps, but have enough blue (inactive) area that if you needed to open more apps without a speed penalty, you could.

  • Where can I go to in Apple to get my RAM upgraded?

I'm still under AppleCare, and I have 4GB of RAM already.
It's a bit laggy, and I was thinking of upgrading to an SSD hdd and more RAM.
    Is that something worth doing?
Will I void my AppleCare? Else, where do I go to upgrade and yet still keep my AppleCare?

I understand that you can do the ram upgrade yourself. this is considered a user option and will not affect warranty provided you take the usual precautions of disconnecting power and if the battery is removable do this also. Then make sure that you touch the case of the MBP before handling the ram - to discharge any possible static on your body. Don't touch the pins of the chips as this can damage the chips.
I'm not sure whether replacing the hdd with solid state comes in the realm of user replaceable. If it fits in the same mount & uses the same connectors I guess it might.
The advantage of solid state is that it is very fast and unlikely to fail as there are no moving parts.
