Will a second line help my Internet speed?

I'm thinking about moving house, which is in a rural location! But the broadband speed is not that great there. I work from home and the kids are always on line, so my fear is that we grind to a stop if we are all using it at the same time. If I was to put in a second telephone line (one for work, one for pleasure) and used two different hubs, would this help to even the load? This may have a big influence on the purchase of this house as there is no plans for upgrading the local exchange to improve the broadband speed.
I'm open for any other suggestions on how I could keep the conflict of home and work broadband demand separate, as the house is perfect apart for this.
Many thanks
Andy

Thanks for this, this helps. I will just have to get my company to pick up the extra line rental.
Get them to provide you with a business line as it will probably be a bit faster, mine always was when I had one.  You will also get better fault fixing and help as well.
What county are you proposing to buy in ?

  • Help with internet speed on WRT54GL.

Just got my WRT54GL v1.1 firmware 4.30.13 a week ago.  My AT&T (bellsouth) DSL is much slower when connected to the router.  I have a Westell 6100 modem which is in bridged mode and DHCP is off.  Connected direct to the modem, I get 700-800Kb/s(down).  When I am connected through the router, I only get around 300-400Kb/s(down).  I get the same results both wireless and wired.  I have tried turning the firewall on the router off, enabling QoS on a specified port,  and disabling wireless.  Any other ideas that I can try would be greatly appreciated.    I was trying to fix this with the stock firmware, but would going with tomato be the best fix?
My setup is a desktop, laptop, and ps3 (all wired connections).  PPPoE setup with always on enabled.  DHCP setup for 3 ip's.  Need more info, let me know if I am forgeting something.  THanks again.

Basically when you update the firmware of your Router, it solves all the problem...
Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in serach tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop...
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
While you Re-configure all the settings on you Router... On the Router setup page, you need to change the MTU size from 1500 to 1365 and click on Save Settings...
On the Wireless Tab.... You need to change the Wireless Channel to : 11-2.462GHz to avaoid Interference.... And your Computers will work perfecly fine...
Set the security on your Router to WPA....
Click on Advance Wireless Settings... and Change the Becon Interval to 50, Fragmentation Threshold : 2306 and RTS Threshold : 2307 and save settings...
Now you can test the Internet Speed on your Computers...

  • Why is my second computer's (wireless) internet speed slower than my 'base' computer's (non-wireless)?

My son has a Macbook that  he uses in another room of our house. The router is at my desk, and is wired to my desktop MacMini. Why should his internet speed be slower than mine? Is there a remedy such as switching providers or routers?

According to the manual for the router you said you have, the maximum supported speed is 22 Mbps for 802.11b and 54Mbps for 802.11b/g - since that MacBook supports 802.11a/b/g/n, 54Mbps is the best case scenario if it's negotiating an "g" connection or 22Mbps if it gets a "b" type connection. So what is your internet connection speed? And that 22/54Mbps is best case - depends on how many wall and other obstructions it goes thru by the time it gets to his MacBook.
If he holds down the Option key and clicks on the WiFi icon in the title bar he should see what type of connection his MacBook has negotiated with the router. For example here is what mine shows (the connection type is listed as a 802.11/g, 2.4GHz, 54Mbps, channel 11, 20 MHz, etc):
Another thing to try and make a quick measure of the speed between his MacBook and the local router and your Mini is copy a big file from your computer to his. That will give you a good idea of the speed of his wireless connection to the router.
    Good luck...

  • Internet speed to access oracle apps in cloud

    Hi all,
    EBS R12.2 Cloud
What is the minimum internet speed (measure using > Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Tes
such that our client process connecting to EBS cloud is stable?
Some users sometimes is complaining their forms or processes is loading very slowly and is blaming on the cloud server.
But if I check on the server, the CPU activity is little only. So I need to tell them to reboot their laptops, which sometime works.
But can it be  caused by their internet speed, if it is not stable? Because they are using wi-fi.
    Thanks a lot,
    mk

    Thanks Kj, Bashar, and all,
Yes they are independent consultants ( less that 10 people) using their own mobile phone internet to access our app in cloud.
Some of them are complaining that the  app seems so slow they wanted to bounced the server apps & database. But I told them that the problem was their laptop or internet speed.
I explain to them to close other applications they are opening and that they might have plenty of other apps opened. I also advise to reboot their laptops.
In addition, I will ask them to measure their internet speed if the have minimum of 1Mb download speed using www.speedtest.net.
By what is the difference of having a 256Kb line or 512kb line or 1Mb line? if they have the same 1Mb download speed?
    Thanks all,

  • BT Infinity and second line

I am having infinity installed on monday along with a new second phone line, i cant seem to get a straight answer from anyone, all i want to know is will the second line and my infinity be installed on monday or will i have to wait a week or two for the new line to be setup.
I have rung customer service and they said the whole installation will be done on the same day.
I did order on the 13th March if that makes any difference.

The majority of issues being reported on these forums with regards to installation relate to people who are transferring their existing line from another provider back to BT. Who then find there is a delay between transfer and Inifinty installation.
Don't think I have yet read an issue related to delay on a new line. Hopefully your be ok.

  • Does Airport Express decrease internet speed?

Right now I use wireless DSL in the home & the speed is very poor - 1.5 Mbps is the fastest available in my area. I have purchased an AE for airtunes and also want to extend the range in my house. Will using AE reduce my wireless internet speed when I connect to it? This would make a big difference to 1.5 mpbs.
    Thanks,
    J

    Thanks for the info.
You will be able to configure your AirPort Express to "join" the wireless network created by the 2-wire for airtunes.
Unfortunately, the Express will only "extend" a wireless network that has been created by another Apple base station, so it is not compatible for this use with the 2-wire.

  • My Mac Book Pro suddenly will no longer connect to the Internet at my house. Help?

My Mac Book Pro suddenly will no longer connect to the Internet at my house. My son's MacBook connects just fine. My MacPro connects at work, at Starbucks, etc. just fine, but not at my house. My son's however has no problem whatsoever. I assume that since his computer connects that the router and modem is not the problem. And since my computer connects everywhere but here . . . . it is not a hardware issue. When directly connecting my MacBook Pro to the modem or router the problem was the same. . . no connection. Help?

    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ About This Mac
Below the "OS X" legend in the window that opens, the OS version appears. Click the version line twice to display the serial number. If the number is missing or invalid according to this web form, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service center to have the problem corrected.

"How do I find that IP address because I put in the 192.168.1.8.."
That's not the router's IP address. Most likely it will be 192.168.1.1
    System Preferences>Network>Advanced>TCP/IP should show it.

  • Upgrading internet speed, will it change my settings

hi all. my first macbook pro is about a month old now and i like it so much i was thinking about upgrading my internet speed. i have att medium dsl, but i may get the faster one. my question is: will this cause me to have to change anything around in my airport? i don't know if this is an att specific question or just anytime anyone upgrades any speed do they have to redo anything. i'm not real good at this stuff and in fact never had wireless in my house til i got this macbook pro, so if it's gonna mess everything up, i'll just leave it as is. thanks, this forum is very helpful and i read it daily just to pick up tips.

    Hi,
Upgrading your internet speed through your service provider will not affect any settings you have set up between your wireless router and your MacBook Pro. It will be a silent and seamless upgrade.

    Hello Elliiee,
The steps detailed below can help stabilize your iPhone.
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.

  • Will the WRT400N help my internet?

I'm having issues with my current network. I live on a military base in Japan, and have the highest internet speed available, which is 15mbps. My setup is kind of unique. I have my modem connected to my Vonage modem. I then have that connected to my router. During online gaming I always experience moderate to severe lag. Will upgrading my network to N help with this problem? I've tried running my modem into my router, and hooking my Vonage modem into that, but the Vonage modem refuses to work properly if I do that. Is there anyway at all I can improve my current conditions?

So basically your Modem is connected to your Vonage Phone and then your Vonage is Connected to the Linksys Router...Basically this setup is called as a NAT Behind NAT setup.... So basically in kind of setup you might face some problem while playing games... May be in this case you can Cascase your Linksys Router behind your Vonage Router....
Connect the Vonage Router to the Linksys Router on the LAN Port 1 then you can connect your Computers to the Linksys Router On Port No.2 , 3 or 4...

  • PAP2T second line will not connect

I have two voip accounts with the same provider and I have two PAP2T adapters (one for each account).  I can get either one to work by themselves.  I need to get both lines working on the same router.  If I hook both PAP2T devices to the router, the second one can never login to it's server.  If I load the line 2 of either device with the other account, the second line can not login to it's server.
Ideally, I would have just one PAP2T connected using line 1 and 2.
How do I set up line 2 with the other account?
    Thanks,

    Hello,
sounds like some of the ports may have been blocked.
May you test those simple tests :
    1) Swap ports 5060 and 5061 between Line1 and Line2 - watch which line will register, if any ...
    2) IF line with port 5060 registers (Line2) and line with port 5061 (Line1) NOT, may you contact your Internet provider (ISP) if for any reason the port 5061 is blocked, also you may contect the VoIP provider, if registration FROM port 5061 is also accepted ...
    3) You may try "nasty trick" and setup SIP ports totaly crazy - for example 5261 and 5262 - or simply any two numbers. There is, in fact, no restriction on SIP SOURCE port (just uzus, that those are USUALY 5060 and increasing), SIP DESTINATION port is (almost) alwayws 5060.
I use my SPA-1001 on with ports 5261 and 5262 on Line1/Line2 with no problems.

The 10GBASE-T standard allows for max 10Gbit/s. Gigabits, not gigabytes.
