Will a small server be faster than connecting a usb drive on E3200?

2 questions, rapid fire!  lol.
will i get better transfer speed on the local network if i have a small server running than by simply connecting a usb drive?

If the small server or file server is using a gigabit ethernet card and connected to the router's gigabit ethernet port then then the local transfer speed should be faster compare to the transfer speed of an external HDD connected to the router's USB port. The theoritical transfer speed of an extenal HDD connected to the router's usb port is about 10-15Mbps, provided that the computer was using a gigabit ethernet card and if wirelessly connected then it will be less compare to the wired speed. Not sure with the transfer speed of a file server though but a device connected to the ethernet port should be much faster compare to a device connected to the usb port.

  • Is raid 0 faster than a 10k rpm drive?

    Hi everyone
Are two 7200 rpm drives in raid 0 faster than a 10k rpm drive?
    /p

Most people assume or think in terms of only two drives for a RAID, but that isn't a given. RAID adds latency and some overhead having to assemble and write to multiple drives.
WD still sells the 150 and 74GB Raptor but it is harder to justify today with fast 7.2K drives, or against the 300GB unit (won't slide into the stock drive bays as is).

For boot drive? for scratch? using 1TB drive perhaps? Would you partition your RAID drives so you are using the outer half?
I've got 3 MaxLine Pro drives in stripped RAID (they do much better in RAID than as single drives). I still use 10K Raptor for boot drive and stripping a pair of Raptors did not make any appreciable difference.
A dedicated boot drive (OS and applications only) helps. My system is really really small and doesn't need anything larger than 135GB, if even that.
Having /Users/account on a 2nd drive (or stripped RAID) is what I have always used.
And obviously scratch for CS3 can be on stripped RAID.
Same, too, for data if you need fast saves while working.

  • Will not recognize the Lucid LG when connected with USB

My Dell  will not recognize the Lucid LG when connected with USB. Both the computer and phone gives a split second prompt that they are connected but then goes away immediately.  After reconnecting it several times however it will finally recognize the mass storage. How can I get away from the hassle of multiple re-connections before it finally recognizes that connection?

That's some helpful information about your issue samrmusso! Some recommendations that I have for you is to try a different USB port on the computer to see if it isn't an issue with that specific USB port.  Are you using the cable that came with the device (recommended) or a 3rd party cable (may not support data transfering properly)? You can also try restarting both the device and computer and retest. It's possible that there's a driver conflict on your Dell. Here's how to check for these types of conflicts: http://goo.gl/qH4m5

    Hi mate,
Sadly the Nokia C2-01 does not support USB OTG functionality. There is no method AT ALL to connect a USB device to this phone in the way that you have stated. If you require storage then instead of a USB drive you can use a microSD card up to 32GB, as the phone supports it.

  • T40/iPhone Syncing: "Device can run faster if connected to USB 2.0 port."

Each time I sync my iPhone 3G with the T40 (2373-73U), a baloon message appears saying the device will run faster if connected to a USB 2.0 port. I thought it was so connected. I've reviewed the ThinkPad article entitled "Troubleshooting USB Devices" as well as the Microsoft article kb/310575, "Advanced Troubleshooting Tips for General USB Problems in Windows XP." I use Windows XP Professional with SP3.  I confirm that BIOS is enabled for USB 2.0.  I saw something that said IRQ 11 is being used for the USB ports. Pursuing the baloon message, I'm told to unplug the device from the current port and plug it into one connected to the enabled USB 2.0 hub, showing six such ports. But my T40 has only two places in which to plug the iPhone USB cable, and neither will eliminate the message that things will work faster if I use another port. Can any one offer a suggestion?

  • Can I connect any USB drive to download photo, songs to ipad2

Can I connect any pen drive to ipad2 to download songs, photo?

I'm not sure what you mean by "download". If you want to put content onto the iPad, then you can import photos though the Camera Connection Kit, as long as you correctly set up the USB flash drive. Search the web for "ipad import photos from usb drive" and you'll find instructions. You cannot load songs or other content onto an iPad from an external drive.
If you mean that you want to save photos or other content from the iPad onto a USB drive, there's no way to do that I'm aware of.

  • Lost Connection to USB Drive

I have a 1TB USB Drive on my new airport extreme. it work very good ... but .... no each day. some day (after 1 up to 3 days) my airport lost the connection to the usb drive. i must restart the drive (cut power) and restart the airport extreme (cut power).
is this an official bug ? what can i do ?

I am having the exact same problem with a 1TB Glyph 062 drive. it seems like after a day or so the Airport just loses the drive, forcing me to power cycle the drive or disconnect/reconnect the usb cable, which immediately fixes the problem. I'm running the latest firmware on my airport (7.4.1). Is there some setting that i'm not aware of?

  • If I have a large photo as my lock screen and home screen will it drain the battery faster than if it were a smaller image?

If I have a high resolution / large sized image set as my lockscreen / homescreen will that effect the battery life of my iPhone 4S?

I do not believe so. Either way, the display of your iPhone is just showing a picture as a wallpaper, if you had no wallpaper or just a black or white one, your phone would still be displaying something (the pixels are still on). Your pixels don't know what they are displaying, so your phone is still using the same amount of battery. Hope this helps!

  • Will my dual 500 go faster? Harddrive & external hard drive issues

    I need some advise, please!
    I have a Dual 500 MHz PowerPC G4. Memory: 1.38 GB SDRAM. Harddrive 40GB
The memory slots are a follows:
    256MB
    128MB
    512MB
    512MB
    1. I would like to speed things up as it is sooo slooow! If I replace the 2 smaller cards with 512MB each will that make a substantial difference or not? I work mainly in PhotoshopCS so I am working with big files, and I am begining to get the feeling someone's sneaked OS6 on here when I was asleep - yes its that bad!!!
    2. On start up I get a folder with a question mark in it. Not an immediate problem as it always finds the drive. However I have noticed that when I go to the disk utility to repair permissions the name of the drive in the left hand pane doesn't match the name of the drive on my desktop. Is this the cause? If so can you tell me how to solve it. My desktop harddrive is called MAC, the one showing in disk utilities is called disk0s9 ...that's a 0 not an O in disk0s9
    3. Finally I shutdown my computer without ejecting the external formac 500GB harddrive first. On reboot this morning it says it doesn't recognise the disk and gives me the options to format, ignore, eject. Obviously I haven't tried formatting. I have tied all reboot senarios including restarting, shut down, both with and without the external drive plugged in, switched on/off to no avail. HOWEVER the external drive DOES work on my powerbook. How do I make it work again on my desktop computer? It seems to me to be the computer at fault not the external drive.

    Hilary-
Here's a doc to explain target mode:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
Should you not be able to restore DVR or ext. drive access, Target mode is a great option to have.
It sounds like you better get a copy of DiskWarrior FedEx'ed ASAP.
Like I mentioned previously, I think you have directory problems (and possibly worse). That would explain the question mark folder at start up, and the different ID for your internal drive. The internal drive, if the origional, is old, tired and wants a break.
I'm glad to hear you have a possible backup solution with the ext drive.
    Don't delay.
Along with back up, I have some things I think you should try.
Because you have possible directory problems, I think it would be good to try a "safe boot". This explains how:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393
This explains what safe boot is:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392
Basically, you force the system to look at itself (directory check), and it simplifies the start up items. Note that some things don't work in safe mode, but you can check other items such as drives and FW.
Also, with the various devices not mounting, you might try a PRAM and NVRAM reset
This link explains doing so via the keyboard at start up
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
If that doesn't help, reset the PMU. It's inside the computer, on the motherboard, back by the little battery (that should be replaced every year or so)
This link explains how to reset the PMU manually
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=95037
Doing the above may help to restore the DVD drive and the Firewire.
Also, when resetting the PMU, of course, shut down the computer, then, unplug ALL cords- power, USB, FW, etc. Also, don't pace around in stocking feet, or anything that causes static before reaching inside. Before unplugging the power cord from the back of the computer, touch the metal on the computer (this goes to ground) to safely discharge your built up static.
Most of all, don't panic. Be methodical, and you'll get through this.
    Good Luck-

  • Can you connect a USB drive to Airport Extreme or an Airport base for TM

Would like to backup MacBooks in 2 different scenarios with Time Machine. One is a USB external drive attached to Airport Extreme and the other is doing the same with an Airport base. Will both work? Also, I have been partitioning the direct USB attached hard drives so that I have a Time Machine partion and a copy of the internal hard drive. This allows my kids to boot from the external drive and still work in case the internal drive has failed or becomes corrupted. So far we have experienced 3 internal drive failures, one during finals and this has saved them. Can you boot from an external drive copy of the internal drive if it is connected to either an Airport Extreme or Airport base?

I am confused as on another site I saw that the Time Machine backup to Airport Extreme was working than broken by an update in 2008, then fixed again by another update in Oct. 2008. So is it officially supported or not. I cannot say that I am impressed with Apple's documentation and updates to what is supported and what is not.
Kappy, I do not see the concern with partitioning a drive and then taking backups to one partition and having a Restore created copy of the hard drive in another. The drive is partitioned and that should keep one partition from overlaying the other. The windows world had used partioning successfully for many years. Apple does have a slick ability to boot from a copy of the OS which is on an external drive. It has saved my kids multiple times when something has gotten hosed up on the internal drive, including a Mac mini with a drive failure during dinal exams and two drive failures on a Macbook. It lets the kids access the internet and get theri work done albiet with a static copy of the OS taken some time in the past. My son was even able to copy to the external drive all of his documents, music and photos off the internal drive that would not boot. Of course he had not learned the value of Time Machine at that point.

  • Connecting an USB drive is causing the status light to turn yellow on 2013 Airport Extreme

I recently purchased a new Airport Extreme ac to improve wifi performance in my house. It has been working fine. Today I decided that I would try to connect one of my USB backup drives to the Airport Extreme. As soon as it is connected, the status light goes yellow. It appears to be trying to read the drive, which has only a timemachine backup folder on it. But the status light never comes back to green.

Well, I unplugged the drive from my laptop and plugged it in to the airport extreme again and this time it stayed green and I now see the drive in the airport utility under partitions. Very odd. Going to try restarting the airport to see if it will go green.
