Will an 8GB RAM in a Retina Macbook Pro from 2014 hold for 4-5 years?

Hi.
So, I'm fairly new when it comes to Macbooks or apple products in general, so sorry if it seems like a bit of a strange question.
I am buying a Macbook Pro Retina (newest one available), with standard i5 and 256 GB storage. The question is whether I should get 8 GB or 16 GB of RAM.
It will be used for studies and personal use. Mostly a lot of text-programs, like word, iBook, PowerPoint and so on, a lot of internet browsing, watching movies, listening to music, light photo editing, sims type game. My worry is that I have several things up at the same time, and also that I would like to upgrade the programs I use, as well as the OS, and need the Macbook lasting 4 years or more. Basically, nothing very heavy, but at the same time I want it to run smoothly for these years, without lagging.
I feel hesitant about getting the 16 GB as it is my understanding from reading the forums, that more ram means more wear on the SSD which may then give out early. Also, will I need it, or is the 8 GB sufficient for me?
Edit: It will be in use a lot of the day, if this is of any importance.

I'm a normal user, using cad programme, not using my laptop for games, my question is: do I need to get 16 gb ram in my retina macbook pro or 8  gb ram is pretty enough?
    Thanks for support.

8 GB may be sufficient for CAD but 16 would be a much better idea.
All the Macs I have ever owned were eventually upgraded to the maximum amount of memory they could use. Considering that as of now, the RAM you specify is all the RAM you will ever have, get as much as you can. That is the only way to maximize its economic life.
If Apple offered a 32 GB version I'd get it.

  • How do I perform a "Suite Product Activation" so that Acrobat will start working on my new Retina MacBook Pro?

How do I perform a "Suite Product Activation" so that Acrobat will start working on my new Retina MacBook Pro?
Like others, I have recently upgraded my MacBook Pro to the next generation and migrated all my information from old to new. Everything works seamlessly EXCEPT Acrobat. Photoshop, Indesign, Bridge and Lightroom all seem functional. Acrobat hangs with an error message "Suite Product Activation Needed. Acrobat was installed as part of a suite. To enable Acrobat, please start another element of the suite (such as Photoshop)." Needless to say, starting another element of the suite has NO impact on Acrobat.
This has to be a common problem. Now that Apple has made it really easy to migrate information from old to new machines, it has to come up all the time. What surprises me greatly is that I can't find any coherent answer in these forums.
So how do I get Acrobat running again?

    Hi Anubha,
I do not understand what you said below.
I am running Adobe Acrobat Pro Version 9.5.5. I do not remember whether it came with Photoshop or InDesign.
When I open Photoshop, it opens without my having to follow any instructions to activate the software. As a matter of fact, I cannot find my Photoshop serial number anywhere in the Photoshop program itself. I do know it from my profile at Adobe.com. Are you suggesting I deactivate Photoshop on the new computer and then reactivate it using my serial number? Will it reactivate?
    When you say
"/Library/Application Support/Adobe" at the root level of the startup disk (not the Library folder inside a user's Home folder)
what do you mean? I do not have a startup disk. I have the original installation disk but that version of Photoshop has been updated a few times.
After staring at your instructions for a while, I realized that you might be talking about the Library/Application Support folders resident on my Macintosh HD, although why you called it a startup disk is unclear to me. IAC, I went into those folders and duly moved the three folders into a new folder I called “Acrob1” and restarted Adobe Acrobat 9 and got the following error message: “AMT Subsystem Failure  The licensing subsystem has failed catastrophically. You must reinstall of call customer support.” with a small (6).
By undoing my actions I am back to the staus quo ante.
    Now what?
    Regards, Robert

  • After sleep, retina MacBook Pro (Mid 2014) does not recognize usb connected mouse movement

After sleep, retina MacBook Pro (Mid 2014, on 10.9.4) does not recognize usb connected mouse movement. I have tried a generic usb mouse and my Razer Deathadder usb mouse. Both mice work before sleep; but after sleep, the computer no longer recognizes mouse movement while still recognizing the mouse buttons when pressed. Any idea why this is occurring?

Can i expand the SSD on my late 2012 Retina Macbook Pro from the current 128GB to 256GB or more?

You can look here to see if they have anything available for your model, but be advised even opening a Retina voids the warranty.

I have a 1st Gen, MacBook Pro from 2006. For the last few years I've had to us my power adaptor as my battery no longer works, and shuts down after 30 seconds it. Now my power adaptor looks like it's coming to an end. Even though it's securely fitted, it often switches off.
I am planning on buying a new MacBook Pro later this year, but for the meantime I'm not sure if I should buy a new power adaptor, or if this is a problem with my MacBook Pro. Also does anyone know where I can buy a battery in the UK for 1st Gen MacBook Pro.

OWC has batteries for 1,1 generation MacBook Pros and they ship internationally - http://eshop.macsales.com/.
Your best bet for a power adapter is to get one from Apple. Third-party adapters just don't seem to be reliable (or safe). You can also buy a replacement battery directly from Apple, of course, but they're a bit more expensive.
    Good luck,

  • Will upgrading the nVidia driver in Windows 7 on my Retina MacBook Pro eliminate the ability for Windows to scale resolutions?

Got my Retina MacBook Pro a couple days ago, and at first after installing Windows 7 the resolutions scaled fine. I imagine that the issue started after updating the nVidia drivers to the latest (313.95 beta at the time) and now my resolutions no longer scale, they show as an IPS monitor normally would; at actual size relative to the native resolution.
Can anyone offer any insight? 2880x1800 looks awesome... but I need the resolution to scale.

I solved the issue. Upgrading the nVidia drivers doesn't make any difference except to optimize the graphics card more and more. There are scaling settings in the nVidia control panel that affect the scaling (or lack thereof) when switching resolutions.
nVidia Control Panel > Display Heading > Adjust Desktop Size and Position > Set Scaling Mode to "Full-Screen"
I highly recommend upgrading the nVidia drivers however, especially if you're a gamer, the optimizations they add each driver update can make some dramatic improvements.

  • I cannot load logic studio into my retina macbook pro from disc

I am trying to load logic studio from the upgrade discs that I brought when it first came out and it's not loading on my retina macbook pro. I'm loading it through the external superdrive. any help would be great.

Could it be because you are trying to install from upgrade discs?  Do you have the installation media for whatever version you upgraded from?  If so, you might try installing that version and then doing the upgrade installation over that.

  • 8GB RAM upgrade fails on Macbook Pro even though RAM is ok

I've bought two 4GB RAM sticks for my Macbook Pro (2.4 Intel i5 running 10.6.7) and they failed the Hardware Memory Test. I tested them individually and they passed and I retested my original RAM and it passed. I sent the RAM back and got replacements and the same thing happened. Both sticks in fail... put them in individually, they pass. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

    tbux wrote:
Do you see much performance improvement after the upgrade?
    Hi t,
Although that question was asked in reply to my post, I suspect you're asking Paulos42 . . . .
One way to get an idea whether more RAM will help or not, is to check Page outs and Swap used. First, use your Mac as you normally would, the longer the better (checking this right after starting up isn’t likely to show you anything). After you’ve used your Mac for awhile (again, the longer the better), go to Applications > Utilities > open Activity Monitor > in the top menu at right, select All Processes in the drop down menu > near the bottom of the window click on System Memory. If Page outs is more that about 10% of Page ins, and/or Swap used is large, chances are good that adding RAM will help. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342

  • Brand new Retina MacBook Pro (mid-2014) overheating ( 200ºF)

Bought this MBP yesterday, installed all my regular apps, no problems. Today I started a Google Hangout in Chrome and within 30 seconds the CPU Core temperature on all 4 cores had jumped to 203ºF (as reported by iStat Menus). The fans slowly ramped up until they hit max RPM (about 6100-6200rpm) but the CPU core temperature stayed between 198-203ºF for the whole call.
I know the temperature is bound to go up when the MacBook Pro is under load, but it seems ridiculous and possibly dangerous for it to be running at >200ºF with the fans on. Is this just the new normal for Apple laptops, or is this going to slowly kill my $2400 laptop?

VMWare and Chrome are not running at the same time. I'm describing two separate tests.
I'm saying any program that uses a moderate amount of CPU (15-25% of total available CPU capacity) causes the MBP to exceed 200ºF with fans running full speed. Chrome is not the problem, it's an example. VMWare is not the problem, just another example. Probably if I fire up iMovie and start rendering video the same thing will happen. I just don't understand why the MBP can't keep its temperature below 200ºF with the fans on full speed.
If I max out all 8 cores by running 8 instances of "yes > dev/null" in Terminal the temperature reaches 213ºF.

  • Using the optical drive of a MacBook Pro from new iMac for iTunes

Can I connect my macbook pro to my new iMac (no optical drive) with ethernet cable and use the optical drive of the macbook pro to upload CDs to iTunes on the new iMac?

On my 17" MacBook Pro I use the eSata port for Black X Duet Hard Drive Docking station where I put 2 1TB Hitachi internal drives. They are swappable and are about $80.00US. I use the USB port for my system backup and a G-force 500 MB bus powered portable drive on the FW800 port just for the heck of it. It works out really well for me.

  • What will the new high end 15" Retina Macbook Pro be like for gaming?

With Nvidia Geforce GT 750M 2GB GDDR5, what kind of performance can I expect? I must stress that this is not my main concern, but I would like to know that in my down time I can enjoy myself and not got worried about frame rates etc.  So what sort of standards for the "average" game will I see? I will be using Windows 7 via bootcamp.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Read some benchmarks in the Internet > http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-750M.90245.0.html They will tell you how games would work with this GPU, but note that this may change depending on your screen resolution, GPU drivers...
In general, you shouldn't have any problem with that GPU to run games in medium-high settings. Be careful with the MacBook temperature, as it may get hot quickly

  • What is the best method for moving to a new Retina MacBook Pro from an Early 2011 15-inch MacBook Pro using Migration Assistant?

I'd like to transfer all data to the new MacBook as seamless as possible. Don't want to reinstall software. Using Migration Assistant in past was successful, but I always used Firewire or Ethernet.
Apple's Thunderbolt cable is too expensive at $49. Wifi is way too slow. (Transfering my 500GBs was going to take over 100 hours.) Do I need to get a Thunderbolt-to-Gigabit Ethernet adapter and cable? That's about the same price as the Thunderbolt cable. Is transfer over USB 2 possible? Would I be better off restoring from my Carbon Copy Clone on my USB 2 external drive?
I do not use Time Machine.

Stephen Coles wrote:... Do I need to get a Thunderbolt-to-Gigabit Ethernet adapter and cable?
That's what I used, although I already had the ethernet cable. Just directly connected both machines (after turning off Airport on the old one), no router or anything else, and ran Migration Assistant on both ends. Transfered a user account with about 30Gb data, nothing else.
