Will an Illustrator class help me understand Photoshop?

Hi there,
I realize I may have put the cart before the horse a bit, but I recently bought a copy of Photoshop, in hopes of learning how to use it to explore digital art and graphic creation.
I know there are a ton of tutorials online, but I was considering taking a couple of inexpensive courses at community college too.  The school offers courses in Beginners Photoshop, but the next one is not until March.
They do have a course on Illustrator though, that begins next week.
I am wondering if it would be worthwhile to take that course, and if I could feasibly translate anything I learn in that class into Photoshop.  I figured at the least it would give me more of a feel for the Adobe programs in general, since I can't imagine their interfaces would be too terribly different.
Thanks

All Adobe programs have similiarites and I firmly believe that learning one will help you learn another.  Not only that, but Photoshop and Illustrator work well together, so it could be very useful for you to know both.

  • Illustrator Bevel, help me understand

    Hi all,
    Coming from photoshop background and are having some real fun trying to work out the 3D/Extrude & Bevel command in Illustrator CS3.
    Now I have a filled circle and simply want to get a highlights and shadows type edge on it, something like I would achieve with the bevel and emboss style command in Photoshop CS3.
    Could someone please explain how to best do this sort of thing in Illustrator.
    Any help would be great

    Here are some screenshots showing in particular the lighting effects that can be added to have multiple light sources which can be placed i different orbital positions to vary the effect.
    This one below is create by place a duplicate on top of the above 3D effect Circle and giving the duplicate a straight forward gradient fill and lowering the opacity. I removed the 3D effect from the duplicate Circle.

  • Does reading ACE certification study guides help me understand photoshop?

    There are plenty of tutorials online teaching people how to do this and that; but for a newbie like me, the biggest problem is, I can follow the recipes, but most of the time, I don't understand the reason behind them. I have been wondering if these things would become more obvious and intuitive if I have a fundamental understanding of the tools first.
    Adobe seems to give out certification exams.  I am just wondering if it would be helpful to buy a exam study guide and read it through (not necessarily going for the certification).  Has anyone done it?  What guide is the best? Or do these guides are just more advanced recipes without explaining anything either?

    I would suggest that you look at Adobe Classroom in a Book Photoshop CS5, Adobe Press.
    It does a good job of sharing the "why," almost as much as the "how." I feel that too many books, and tutorials skip the why, while only concentrating on the how. Many of the ACE questions come from the chapter review material, which is in Q&A form.
    Good luck,

    Is your scratch drive over 1 Terabyte? Photoshop 7 was never programmed for those sizes  and will return that type of error if you recently changed drives,
    Solution is to partition that drive to less than one 1 TB or find a smaller drive.

    Might be easiest to use a service like Dropbox and sync everything to a folder in Dropbox so you'll have it on your Mac and on your iPhone.

  • Need serious help about understanding settings on photoshop for the best quality- please reply is you know a lot about this.

    Ideally I'd like to speak to someone from the UK as I feel I can't write out everything I want to say because it's too confusing and it isn't just one question.
    I need help with setting photoshop so the images are the best quality on screen and for websites and printing and how I can change that etc I've heard different things and I just need some clarification and advice.
    Obviously I'm sure some of you wont want to give personal details out that's fine but I'm generally just in need of some advice, let me know if you can help:)

    I don't change any settings.  For 1X web images I always use Save for Web.  PS remembers which web settings you used the last time.   This doesn't effect other files or formats.

  • Need some help in understanding J2EE

    Hi guys,
    I have been doing java for the past 3 years... From OOP to WAD (Windows Application Development), however i didn't study EAD (Enterprise Application Development) which teaches J2EE, thus i have no knowledge of J2EE... i have tried to read the J2EE tutorial...but dun realli understand it...can anyone help me by providing some good links to learn J2EE

    J2EE defines a framework for server-side applications. It actually "sits" on top of J2SE, and extends the functionality of J2SE by adding services for managing web applications and managing beans that can be persisted/saved.
    The J2EE environment "hosts" web applications and persistent Java beans. Web applications run inside a web "container", which handles loading, initializing and dispatching requests to the web application components, and the persistent Java beans are managed by a separate bean container, which handles loading and persisting the beans.
    A web application consists of Java servlets, Java Server Pages (JSPs), Java tag libraries (taglibs), and any other Java classes. The persistent beans are called Enterprise Java Beans (EJBs) and are otherwise ordinary Java beans, except that they implement specific interfaces so that the bean container can manage them and allow applications running in remote JVMs to access them.
    A server that provides containers for both the web application and the Enterprise Java Beans is called a J2EE application server. One J2EE application server can host multiple web applications. To prevent each application from directly accessing or affecting the other applications on the server, each application runs in its own "context". The context is actually called the servlet context because servlets are the standard Java component for processing requests within a web application.
    While I'm sure there are purists who will disagree with me, most applications do not use, nor need to use EJBs, and can be ran comfortably with the web container alone. Tomcat is a J2EE web container you can download for free, and it comes with sample applications you can study. I recommend starting with Tomcat because it's free, it's easy to install, and it is just a web container, without the thousands of irrelevant features that vendors add-on that distract you from really understanding the core technology. Tomcat comes with fairly extensive online help, and there are probably as many books available today for Tomcat as there are for any other web application server, if not more.
    I hope this is helpful. There's certainly plenty of information available on the Internet about J2EE, and I've only scratched the surface here. If you have specific questions about J2EE, post them here and I'm sure someone will be able to help you out.

  • Can anyone help me understand "Continue Statements"?

    Hi,
    I was wondering if anyone could help me understand continue statements. I've been studying the java tutorials this weekend but can not get my head around the following explanation: (My thoughts are at the end of this message and it might be easiest to read them first!)
    "The continue statement skips the current iteration of a for, while , or do-while loop. The unlabeled form skips to the end of the innermost loop's body and evaluates the boolean expression that controls the loop. The following program, ContinueDemo , steps through a String, counting the occurences of the letter "p". If the current character is not a p, the continue statement skips the rest of the loop and proceeds to the next character. If it is a "p", the program increments the letter count.
    {code}class ContinueDemo {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    String searchMe = "peter piper picked a peck of pickled peppers";
    int max = searchMe.length();
    int numPs = 0;
    for (int i = 0; i < max; i++) {
    //interested only in p's
    if (searchMe.charAt(i) != 'p')
    continue;
    //process p's
    numPs++;
    System.out.println("Found " + numPs + " p's in the string.");
    }{code}
    Here is the output of this program:
    Found 9 p's in the string.
    To see this effect more clearly, try removing the continue statement and recompiling. When you run the program again, the count will be wrong, saying that it found 35 p's instead of 9.
    A labeled continue statement skips the current iteration of an outer loop marked with the given label. The following example program, ContinueWithLabelDemo, uses nested loops to search for a substring within another string. Two nested loops are required: one to iterate over the substring and one to iterate over the string being searched. The following program, ContinueWithLabelDemo, uses the labeled form of continue to skip an iteration in the outer loop.
    {code}class ContinueWithLabelDemo {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    String searchMe = "Look for a substring in me";
    String substring = "sub";
    boolean foundIt = false;
    int max = searchMe.length() - substring.length();
    test:
    for (int i = 0; i <= max; i++) {
    int n = substring.length();
    int j = i;
    int k = 0;
    while (n-- != 0) {
    if (searchMe.charAt(j++)
    != substring.charAt(k++)) {
    continue test;
    foundIt = true;
    break test;
    System.out.println(foundIt ? "Found it" :
    "Didn't find it");
    }{code}
    Here is the output from this program.
    Found it"
    Here are Woodie's thoughts........................................
    1) With the first program I don't understand how the program counts the number of "p's". Like for example how it stores the number of "p's". Shouldn't it say:
    if (searchMe.charAt(i) = 'p') then store it in some sort of containers??? 2) With the second program, I don't understand the test section. For example: Why does it have --? why does it have != after while and why does it have != after if?
    while (n-- != 0)
                    if (searchMe.charAt(j++) != substring.charAt(k++))
                        continue test;
                foundIt = true;
                     break test;Edited by: woodie_woodpeck on Nov 23, 2008 3:29 AM

    Woodie, I think they're just silly "theoretical" examples... ergo don't worry too much not understanding them, coz they don't actually make a lot of sense... as you've allready pointed out there are other "more normal" control structures which achieve the same thing, and which in this case (in my humble opinion) would make for clearer, more concise, more maintainable code.
    All you need to know about continue is "it means go back to the top of the loop"... If you're not comfortable using "continue" then don't.
    There's more than one way to do it.
      public static void main(String[] args) {
        try {
          final String s = "peter piper picked a peck of pickled peppers";
          int count = 0;
          for ( char c : s.toStringArray() ) {
            if (c=='p') count++;
          System.out.println("There are "+count+ " p's in '"+s+"'");
        } catch (Exception e) {
          e.printStackTrace();
      }Having said all that... I did use continue in anger the other day... I was reading Geometries from a shape file... the reader was throwing an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException given an "empty Feature" (ie a feature with the geospatial presence)... All I did was catch the exception and continue trying to read the new feature... the alternative would have been to rewrite the control logic of the whole reader loop... quick, simple effective... but I don't routinely build continue statements into new code... just a matter of personal taste.
    Cheers. Keith.

  • How do Standard class based exceptions understand an exception?

    Dear All,
    Can any one explain how does the standard class based exceptions understand and identify the specific exception. For example CX_SY_ZERODIVIDE is an exception class we use to catch the divide by zero exception. How does the class understand it. To clear my point  please refer the code below
    data: v1 type i,
            v2 type i.
    try.
    v2  = v1 / 0.
    catch CX_SY_ZERODIVIDE.
    The above code will work and an exception will be handled properly. But how??
    suppose if i write..
    try.
    v1 = Apple
    catch CX_SY_ZERODIVIDE.
    it obviously doesnt work.
    so my point is how does an exception class understand the exception?
    I have very poor knowledge about it, i have checked the class CX_SY_ZERODIVIDE and its methods. There is no code in it. .
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Abdullah.

    1) You can write your own log class. Call the log method from your catch
    2) Upgrade to JDK1.4.0 and you can use the Logger function
    3) Check jakarta for log4j

  • Can you help me understand the use of the word POSITION in TR and CFM?

    Hi,
    I am trying to have a view of typical BI reports in TR and TM/CFM so through my research I came to the following link:.
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/62/08193c38f98e1ce10000000a11405a/frameset.htm
    My problem on this link and other postings on this site seem to be the same. Can you help me understand the use of the word POSITIONS in these context:
    1. Our client has asked for financial transaction reports in BW, such as position of Borrowings, Investments and Hedge Operations (TM data).
    2. I have a requirement on, some reports related to Money Market (Fixed Term Deposits, Deposits at Notice) something on FSCM-Treasury and Risk Manager. These reports will be similar to that of Loans, i.e. Position statement, flow statement, etc.
    3. The set of position values for a single position or a limited amount of positions can be reported by transactions TPM12 and TPM13 in R3.
    4. 0CFM_C10 (Financial Positions Cube)
    Do you have some simple report outputs to help clarify how the word POSITION is used in such environments?
    Thanks

    If I future buy 10 shares in company at £1 per share - at the end of the day my potential value is £10
    The next day the shares drop tp £0.9 per share - I have a negative position - my shares are only worth £9
    I haven;t bought them yet - but I have a negative position - ie if things stayed as they are - I am going to realise (ie end up with)  a loss
    Now you can use this for loans and foreign exchange banks as well...
