Will an iMac G4 support a newer OS than Jaguar?

I am asking for a little bit of advise and opinions if possible.
I have to opportunity to buy a G4 pretty cheaply and I just want to know if it is a good deal and worth the money.  My current laptop is very very old and very very tired and no longer copes with much.
The Mac currently has Jaguar on it, my plan would be to eventually buy one of the mini's and use the G4 as a screen.  However, having done a wee bit of research I was wondering if the G4 would have the capability to update to something more recent than Jaguar?
And also is it worth it?  I would basically be replacing my aging laptop with a Mac which is not spritely and I am not sure what to do.

If it has a 700 or 800 mHz processor, it can run up to OS 10.4.11 "Tiger." If the processor is 1.0Ghz or faster it can run up to OS 10.5.8 "Leopard."
And also is it worth it?
Depends. If you are trying to improve your web experience, likely not. Many websites now use technologies that stopped supporting Macs made before the change to Intel processors in 2006.
Caveats:
1) Legitimate retail install disks of OS10.4 and 10.5 are hard to come by, so much so that some sellers are demanding twice the original price of US$129, making it more costly than many used G4 iMacs.
2) The first G4 iMacs did not have DVD-capable optical drives, but the OS versions I mentioned come on DVD. That does not mean they can't be installed but complicates installation.
3) If the computer can use Leopard 10.5, it will need all the RAM you can put in it. Early G4 iMacs can handle only 1GB RAM, the absolute min for 10.5 to be happy. Later models could take up to 2GB RAM. However, regardless of model, fully upgrading the RAM on a G4 iMac is not a trivial matter. You can get to half the RAM slots, ones to which Apple wants you to have access. Getting to the other half requires a serious teardown of the computer that, if not properly executed, can cause the computer to overheat with the possibility of fatal damage.
If you like the styling of the G4 iMac over performance, by all means go for it. I also think they are a very cool computer. However, if you need performance, especially with web browsing, find a lightly-used Intel Mac of some flavor.

  • How do I upgrade my late 2012 27" iMac to support the new 802ac wifi?

I want to buy the new Airport Extreme to get super fast wifi, but as I understand it theres no use at the moment as the current latest versions of the iMac's only support up to 802n. Is this correct or will I need to upgrade the wifi chip in my iMac to be able to use the super fast capabilities of the new airport extreme?

I have to say thaat this is the sort of thing that reaally gets me! I've had my new iMac for a couple of months now so why oh why didn't they build it with 802.11ac? It's ludicrous that the only thing that supports it is the new MBA's!! Surely the new TC has been on the design table long enough that this could have been thought of in the latest iMacs and MBP's.
So I'll not be buying the latest TC (too tall to fit in my space anyway) but luckily there are some refurbished last gen TC's in the store for a reasonable price.

  • Will After Effects CS6 support the new EVGA GeForce GTX 680 for Mac?

With this new graphics card out will Adobe/Mac OS X add support for it in AE CS6 for excellerated graphics and ray traced 3D? Also, will Adobe bring back live 3D from Photoshop to AE?

Sorry, should have been more specific. I was referring to this desktop card the Gforce GTX 680 (mac edition) http://www.evga.com/articles/00730/. I just saw a recent article about its release but not sure how long it has been out and not sure what evga is. I'm in the learning phase of all the ins and outs of graphics card compatibility and the manufactures intent. I'm curious about inserting it into my Mac Pro 2010 and getting improved performance along with accelerating my processing in After Effects CS6 since it has an ATI card with no CUDA architecture. Want to beef my RAM too. So I'm wondering if this card is A. Compatible with my machine/OS and B. If Adobe will add it to its list of supported CUDA cards. Again, not sure if this is an Adobe thing or an OS thing, I heard on some tutorial video that Mac OS is part of the issue. I am aware of the current state of limbo Mac Pro users are in with Apple's hiatus from a major update to this line. But even with a major new release my employer won't be in the market for that kind of investment which sucks because I'd like to move to thunderbolt for my video storage. Personally, I'm investing in a MBP with the 650M card which I've done tests with and it beats my Mac Pro with having CUDA. As for 3D layers from Photoshop to AE it is just kind of makes sense as well as being a price point issue. If you can draw and create 3D objects in PS why not be able to animate them in AE? Just like being able to animate AI and PS layers, it should be one big happy Adobe family, no? Why pay for Cinema 4D if I don't need it for everyday advanced 3D work? I do however love the Element plug-in from Video Co-pilot and it works great so that is my solution for now, then 4D if I get into more advanced custom 3D. But still you should be able to make 3D objects in PS and bring them in to AE, it just makes sense.

  • HT4757 When will Apple iPhoto/Aperture support the new Leica V-Lux 4 camera RAW format ?

I just bought a Leica Vlux-4 and found that the current verisons of Aperture and iPhoto do not reconize the RAW files like they do for earlier versions and all of the Canon & Nikon DSLR's.  I see from the support doc that Apple supports the Vlux-1 and 2, so when will RAW support be added for the Vlux-4 ?
I dont want to move to Lightroom but it already supports the Vlux-4 camera !
    Thanks.

while this all may be true,
it is all speculation, and we are not supposed to speculate here; Apple does not publish the reasons for missing raw support, and for the Vlux-4 it is early days yet. There may very well be a raw update including your camera soon. The only difference I see, is that the the Vlux-1 & 2 did not come with Lightroom included, only with PSE, and the support stopped, when Lightroom was included - the direct competition to Aperture.
Send feedback to Apple to let them know!

  • Will Windows XP/iTunes support the new Nano I bought last week?

I went to the Apple store last week (Nov. 2012) and the tech there told me the new 16-gig Nano would not link to iTunes on my Windows XP desktop.  However, a clerk at a nearby electronics store, where I actually bought the device, said it would work as long as I have the latest edition of iTunes.  Both guys told me that I could network iTunes from my XP desktop to my Windows 7 laptop, although I have no clue how to do that.

*I bought my Nano in Dec 2006. Assuming it is 2nd generation.*
This will tell you about the different models: Identifying different iPod models
*Now the Nano battery charges when I connect the USB cable to the Windows XP Pro system but Real and iTunes is not able to "see" my Nano*
Have you had a chance to look at these troubleshooting pages? They may be of some help:
iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes
iPod missing in My Computer and in iTunes
iPod is not recognized properly by computer when USB drivers are not installed properly or are out of date

I hv lost my icon for iphoto on my Imac Mac OSX10.5.8.   I still hv my pics but can no longer creat albums and events.  If I upgrade to the latest Mountain Lion, will my pics go into the new iphoto?

From where did you lose the iPhoto icon? From the Dock? If so, then it's still in your Applications folder. Find it there then drag the icon back into the Dock. If it's no longer in Applications perhaps you've moved or renamed it. Use Spotlight to search for "iphoto."
Upgrading to Mountain Lion will not affect your iPhoto Library unless you erase the hard drive first. Be sure you backup before any system upgrade.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
             7. Xserve (Early 2009)
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Am I eligible for the free upgrade?
See Apple - Free OS X Mountain Lion upgrade Program.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

  • When will Adobe support the new Canon S100 RAW format in Lightroom (& Camera RAW)?

Just bought a new Canon S100.  It generates RAW files, but Lightroom would not import it as it said it was unsupported.  Any ideas when Adobe will start supporting this new RAW format?

Got mine yesterday and discovered LR and PS didn't recognize the camera.  To make maters worse the Canon software and manuals are on the included disc.  Unfortunately my iMac wouldn't recognize the the disc.  I called Canon and they told me the camera was too new and they couldn't help me. They didn't have another disc they could send me or I couldn't download the software on line.  They told me to check back in a few weeks.  Before I hung up, the rep asked me if there was anything else he could help me with.  All I could do was laugh.

  • Will I be happy with a new iMac & FCE4?

I am considering upgrading for the primary purpose of being able to edit AVCHD video in FCE4.
Your thoughts are appreciated... am I correct in my assumptions below? I do not have the $$ for a new MacPro, so...
I have a Power Mac (Tower) Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 with 2G of RAM and about 750 G of HD space.
I am thinking I want to sell it and get a 20" iMac. Why? A couple of reasons:
    1 - Faster (am I right)
2 - Better for video editing (intel) with my new AVCHD SONY SR11
    3 - Smaller footprint
4 - I anticipate next OS to be intel only and want to sell before that turn of events lowers the value of my tower even more
5 - Looks like I can get nearly 1k for my current setup, thus only being out about $400-$500
    Your thoughts?
Are their any reasons I shouldn't make this switch? Will FCE4 work fast on a new 20" iMac? Of course, I will need to buy an external BluRay burner, but oh well...
    Dwaine

"Fast" is a relative term, but FCE4 will run fine on this iMac. It would also run on your G5, but working with AVCHD footage requires an Intel processor.
There's no BluRay support in iDVD. I think Toast offers it.

Assuming that "original" means a G3/CRT iMac, not wireless. The G3 iMacs didn't have Bluetooth. The good news, though, is that any standard USB keyboard and mouse will work with them, even the ones designed for Windows that you can pick up for ten bucks or so.

We're not allowed to speculate on future or rumoured Apple products, but we all know there'll always be newer tech coming along.
The iMac you have is an excellent machine, be happy with it and get a good few years use out of it. By the time your machine is slowing down, whatever comes next will have been updated numerous times.
    I had the 2011 i5 27" delivered about 3 weeks ago. It's a cracking machine
