Will an Intel iMac read transfers from a PowerMac?

I have over 3000 photos in iPhoto on my QuickSilver (2002). Can I transfer them to my Intel iMac? If so, how?
Thank you

Yes. The easiest way would be to copy your iPhoto library to your Intel computer. You can do this any number of ways. The library will be located in your /Home/Pictures/ folder and should be named "iPhoto Library." In addition you may want to copy the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist preference file as well.
1. If you have an external hard drive or large enough USB flash drive you could copy the files to them and then transfer to your Intel computer.
2. You can connect the two by Firewire cable and use Target Disk Mode to transfer the data.
3. If you have a home network you can transfer the data across the network via File Sharing.
4. You could burn the data to a CD or DVD to transfer from one to the other.
5. If you have a high speed internet connection you could upload the data from the QS to one of the many online storage sites that offer some free storage (many offer at least 2 GBs without charge) then download from the same site to the Intel computer. You could do this via a .Mac account if you have one by using your iDisk.

  • Can my Intel iMac read double-layer DVDs?

What are double-layer DVDs as opposed to regular ones, anyways?
A friend wants to send me several DVDs worth of files on "double-layer DVDs". Can I read them?
    I have a Intel iMac (dual processor) with a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846 CD/DVD Drive.
I don't want my friend to go through this and then I can't read them. Especially since he makes it out like double-layer DVDs are maybe new or advanced?
    Huh? Anyone?

    Yes.

These DVDs contain a second writable layer, which doubles the DVD's capacity.

  • Upgrade Intel iMac's RAM from 3GB to 4GB and change Graphics Card

    Hi,
I have 20" Intel iMac (November 2008) and it has 3GB of memory as of now. I would like to upgrade it to 4GB. I need to know if Apple will do this for me at my local Apple Store and how much this will cost. Also, I want to change my video card from ATI to Nvidia. Is this even possible? If so, please give me some details about it. I am more concerned abut the RAM issue.
    Thank You!!!

They almost certainly will be willing and able to do that, but you'll have to get an estimate from the store on the cost. To get a ballpark figure, check Apple's website and see what 4GB of DDR2 SO-DIMMs would run you, then add about $100 for labor. Honestly, there's no real point to paying someone to do this. All you do is take a Philips #2 screwdriver to the screw on the little panel at the bottom of the iMac. Once you losen that, the panel comes off, and there are little black plastic flaps that let you pull the RAM out so you can grasp it with your hands. Then you just push the new RAM in until you feel it snap into place, fold the black plastic tabs over it, and put the panel back on. Once you have the RAM, it'll probably be a 5-10 minute job, tops. Just be sure not to do it while the system is on or plugged in. If you do it yourself you can buy DDR2 SO-DIMMs anyone. Apple will charge a hefty premium because they have to cover the costs of potentially having to replace them under warranty.
As for the video card... It's technically possible, but it would be so ridiculously expensive for just swapping the equivalent nVidia card for your ATI one, it would be downright stupid to pay to have it done. So for all practical purposes, it's not possible.

  • Will these intel iMacs still offer flawless performance?...

Or will there be problems like PC's have? I have a PC right now...and I'm fed up with the lousy performance of it.
I want to get an iMac...will the new intel iMac be a better choice than the standard iMac?

As Timon mentioned, the problems with Windows PCs are related to Windows, not the x86 architecture.
As for which iMac is the better buy... it really depends on what you need right now.
If you want access to the entire library of Macintosh software today and throughout the near future, then the iMac G5 is your choice. In the short term, you have a marginally wider selection of software available to you. And it's still viable in the long term; there's a huge installed base of PowerPC Macs, and we won't stop seeing new software for them for likely at least a couple years.
If you want the performance benefits of the iMac Core Duo, then you give up some compatibility in the short term. Some current applications won't run on the Intel processors, and pricing and target dates for updates are all over the map depending on what title you need. If, though, you never intend to stray beyond the apps that ship with the iMac and maybe Microsoft Office, then you'll probably never notice the difference between now and wider availability of Universal applications.

  • Does Intel iMac read/write the mini DVDs

I just want to know if the slot loading DVD/CD in the Intel iMacs handles the small 3 inch Discs? I don't want to insert the small disc and then find out that it can't handle them like the tray loading drives.
    Thanks

  • Intel iMac RAM: Different from normal 200-Pin SO-DIMM PC2 5300?

    I've got two questions here:
    1. According to this KB doc, "mid-2006" iMac memory should be upgraded in pairs "for best performance." That much I get; however, it also says that "The iMac (Mid 2006) ships from the factory with at least 512 MB of DDR2 SDRAM, in two 256 MB DIMMs; one in each of the memory slots." But according to the Apple Store, current iMacs still ship with one stick. We are in mid-2006, aren't we? So is the article wrong, or the spec page? My brother just ordered a 17" iMac, and we need to know what the RAM makeup really is before ordering more.
    2. While researching RAM upgrades for that machine, I found that NewEgg has two identical-spec Kingston RAM modules that are $30 different in price: Kingston 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Notebook Memory - $88.99 vs. Kingston 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Notebook Memory - $119.99. They've got identical specs, except the more expensive one specifically states Apple compatibility, and is the one recommended for the iMac on the Kingston site. (However, it recommends it for "early 2006" iMacs, and doesn't have a "mid-2006" recommendation, which gives me pause.)
So I'm curious about the price difference -- shouldn't either one work fine in the iMac? -- and the inconsistency between the KB doc and the spec page. Does anyone who very recently ordered a 17" iMac know if it shipped with 1/512MB module or 2/256 modules?
    Thanks, all.

The mid-2006 iMac refers to the education only iMac released in mid-2006, not as far as I can tell the one that was released in January which is the current spec'ed one. The education iMac has very different specs as you can see here:

Being you are in France go to http://www.crucial.com/ or http://www.macsales.com/ where they will make sure you get RAM for the right model.

  • My 2007 Intel iMac is waking from sleep on its own during the early morning hours. Not sure why. Is there a way to find out by looking at some sort of log files or something else?

I'm wondering if someone else is having control of my iMac as it randomly wakes up from sleep while I am sleeping sometime during the night. I've woken up with the light from the monitor brightening my room. Need to find out what is causing it to wake up and stay on. Any suggestions?

I've had this same issue lately. Here's one thing to check: System Preferences > Energy Saver > Wake for Network Access should be unchecked.
Mine is unchecked, so the only other thing I can think of is that it might be Time Machine backing up. My iMac is backing up to an external hard drive, and also sharing that drive over the network so two other Macs can back up as well.
Should be an easy theory to test. Turn off AirPort, unplug Ethernet, and let the iMac sit. See if it still happens.

  • Very Specific; Will an Intel iMac run FCP6?

I don't do HD, not intending to. Just want stunning Mini-DV output(hence FCP)
Capture to ext 7200rpm FW drives will be the only issue I think? but I use ext FW drives at present on a G5 1.8DP and it works but is getting slower by the day.
I don't need PCI slots (only use G5 ones for add'l FW ports)
I know power users will pooh pooh it, but I can't see why it shouldn't be a perfectly good edit machine?
If someone out there is using one I'd love to contact.
A 24" would be intention, but the mid range model views appreciated?
    Thanks in advance

  • Help, Kernel Panic transferring HD to new Intel Imac

My Imac 500 has a Kernel Panic error and I will need to get my files to my new Imac Intel. Can I do this without resolving the Kernel Panic error? Will my Intel Imac see the HD on my Imac 500 while it is in this error mode?
    Any help is appreciated.

You should be able to use the Migration Assistant to move your user account to the new computer as long as there is no problem with the old computer's disk drive.
Shut both computers off and connect them via a Firewire cable. Boot the old machine into Target Disk Mode. After the TDM logo appears boot the new computer normally. The old computer's disk drive should appear on the new computer's Desktop. Open Migration Assistant (Utilities folder) on the new computer and use it to transfer your user account to the new computer.

  • My G5 iMac died how do I move  iTunes that I bought to my new Intel iMac

I was able to save the hard drive from my dead G5 iMac and it's now a bootable image on an external firewire drive.
How can I move all my iTunes that I bought to my new Intel iMac?
BTW from what I've read you shouldn't use Migration Assistant when moving from a PPC to an Intel Mac so I don't think I want to go that route.
Any ideas as to how I can do this and not lose all my iTunes that I bought?

    i think this should work:
    1) boot from the image.
    2) use these tips to move the library from the image to another external HD. from the iMac, use the +choose library+ operation below.
    or
    3) if you have a suitably sized iPod, click here.
    or
    4) drag & drop the entire iTunes folder to the iMac. put it in the proper location on the iMac in HD/users/your_name/music (overwrite the iTunes folder there - presumably void of any content right now). when done, on the iMac, launch iTunes with the option key pressed. you will see this window
click on +choose library+ and navigate to the +iTunes library file+ (inside the iTunes folder you just dragged & dropped).

  • TV remote waking up my Intel iMac?

This is really odd: in the last week or so, I've noticed my iMac waking up from sleep when I turn off my TV with its remote or when my roomie in the next room does likewise.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any fix for it?

You posted in the wrong forum. Since you have an Intel, you will need to repost in the Intel-based iMac Forums.
This area is for G5 iMacs which are an entirely different model than an Intel iMac.

Should work. Keyboards are keyboards. I'm using an iMac G5 Keyboard with a new Intel iMac.

  • Reading Data from SCXI 1600

    Hi Experts,
I am new to this SCXI Interfacing. Kindly help me in the context
I am developing an application which is going to be use  SCXI 1125 module and SCXI 1600 controller. In the application I want to allow the user to configure various Task in the front panel.
What are the controls needed in the front panel to allow the user to configure Task
How to read the data from SCXI 1600,
How to differentiate eight channel data coming from SCXI 1125 thro SCXI 1600
    Thanks in advance
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

True, you cannot simulate the SCXI-1600. This means you will not be able to run your code without the hardware. For simulation purposes you can, however, use another device that would function in a similar manner to the SCXI-1600 in terms of triggering, resolution, and sampling rate.
As for the programming, you would use DAQmx as I had mentioned. There are no examples that are specific to the SCXI-1600, but you don't really need them. The SCXI-1600 is fundamentally a data acquisition module that happens to be in a SCXI form factor with a USB connection. As far as your software is concerned you will use DAQmx to read data from it. So, take a look at the DAQmx examples that gather data from data acquisition devices.
Your task will define how many channels you will be reading. Since you are reading a mixture of measurements (temperature, pressure, and possibly just plain voltages) you will need to decide whether to create separate tasks for each of these measurements that are configured to be specific to that measurement type, or to create one task that simply reads all unscaled channel values (i.e. raw voltages) and then you scale the values in your code. If you open the Example Finder and navigate the tree to Hardware Input and Output -> DAQmx -> Analog Measurements you will see categories for the different measurement types. Many of them have graphs.
If you have not already done so, you may want to start here: http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/3116
