Will any Cat5 Ethernet cables work equally well for Gigabit ethernet ports?

I'm almost embarrassed to ask this, but I must. Are some Cat 5 Ethernet cables designed for Gigabit Ethernet? The Airport Extreme Base Station(b/g) uses Gigabit Ethernet for its LAN and WAN ports. I think my Comcast modem's single Ethernet port does, also. Currently, I use a Cat 5 100Mbs cable to connect the modem to the AEBS. So, I'm wondering if I can get faster throughput with a Cat 5 1000Mbs cable (if such a thing exists).

In addition to Bob's comments, it's important to understand that Gigabit Ethernet requires using all four pairs of wires inside the cable ... regardless of whether that cable is CAT-5, CAT-5e, or CAT-6 certified. The real difference of the categories is how high of a frequency can they support. For example CAT-6 is rated for 10 Gigabit traffic. It's not that CAT-5 won't work, but it's not guaranteed to do so.
If you have any Ethernet runs in home that is supplying connections for both data & phone lines on the same cable, you will NOT achieve Gigabit speeds on those cables as the installer used at least one of the necessary pairs for the phone line.

I need to work on Adobe Premiere on my 2013 Mac Book Pro (with thunderbolt port) and display it on my 2010 iMac (with Mini DisplayPort) using Target Display Mode (TDM). I tried using a thunderbolt cable plus Option F2, but it didn't work. Will a Mini Display cable work? Any other suggestions?

2010 iMacs do not have Thunderbolt, they have mini-display ports. You are using the wrong connection, you need a mini display port to mini display port. Please read up on what Apple says in Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Will 5th gen sync cable work with Touch?

I haven't tried it, because the 5th gen cable has the little squeeze-and release-feature on it. Will it work with the Touch? Or will I risk breaking pins if I attempt to use it?

I've used that on my touch before and didn't notice any problems using it. I have a 3rd party charger which was the same. I didn't even think it could possibly break the pins but I can't say I noticed the ipod touch not charging or anything for that reason.

  • Will a 10 point touchscreen work as well on a mac with windows 8 (Bootcamp) as it would on a normal PC?

I'm just on the verge of purchasing a touchscreen monitor and a Mac Mini and installing Windows 8 using Bootcamp. I was just wondering if anybody knows how well supported Windows 8 is on Macs?
I have a Macbook Air with Windows 7 and it runs exactly as it would on any other Windows only laptop, but I wondered if this will be the case with Windows 8 as it's a newer OS, especially the touch control?
I would use windows 8 75% of the time and specifically rely on the touchscreen interface so I would really need the touchscreen to be flawless while in Windows 8. Alternatively the monitor I'm looking at can be purchased as an all in one but I'd really prefer the Mac Mini for the awesomeness of Apple Care and to have the best of both worlds as far as OS's are concerned.
Any info or advice from anyone that's using Windows 8 with Bootcamp and specifically with a touchscreen monitor would be awesome!

  • Will 10 meter HDMI cable work without dropouts with Intensity & MacPro?

Has anyone had experience with a 10 meter cable and capturing thru HDMI using an Intensity card and Mac Pro dual core?
Unsure if I can get away with a 10 meter cable.
Also, curious if I can capture to ProRes without issues onto a non-RAID Western Digital Caviar RE2 WD7500AYYS 750GB.

could I add two drives to my Mac Pro dual core and use them as a striped RAID - just to capture?
Capture, edit with...everything. As your MEDIA drives...where you store the media...not just for capture. And RAID 0 is always risky....which is why I back up all my media onto cheaper firewire drives. OR, you can get a Raid 5 solution (if a drive dies, your media is still fine).
what is the sustained write speed I'd need in case I moved to a RAID card?
Depends on the ProRes setting you choose. BUT, err on the safe side and assume the HQ setting. 25MB/s, so a simple 2 drive raid stripe will get you 65MB/s for firewire, and 80MB/s if internally. A single SATA drive might handle this, but it won't have a lot of head room (extra speed in case of...something)...so it might drop a from on occasion. That is why a Raid is good.
Apple does make a RAID card, but it doesn't do RAID 5....AFAIK. No, for RAID 5 you need an external drive case.

  • I have down loaded the Yosemite system at the constant request of Apple Inc.  My computer, that has worked very well for the past seven years is now unusable.  It is so very slow taking some ten minutes to start.  How do I get back to where I was?

What am I to do?  I have stupidly downloaded Yosemite and now I have a useless piece of Junk called a MacBook.  Somebody help me please, in words I can understand

You could post the output from EtreCheck
    <https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6174>
Many times Yosemite performance problems are caused by 3rd party additions that do not play well in the Yosemite environment.  EtreCheck will list these 3rd party addtions.
Also Yosemite really needs 4GB, if not more RAM.
You should also look at Applications -> Utilities -> Console and see if there are frequently repeating log messages.  This might indicate a sub-component that is having problems.
If you have anti-malware software, Mac cleaning software, or memory cleaning software, these frequently cause problems.

  • Will any of a WiFi iPad work without WiFi?

IF I bought a WiFi iPad mini, will it work at  all when not on WiFi. I go in and out of hotspots on my way home from work and school. Or do I need the 4G as well?

If you need Internet access on the go then apps that need data from the Intenet via just WiFi won't work.
You would need an iPad with both WiFi and 4G.
Interestingly, The only exception I have found is that when using the Apple Maps app,  as long as you plot a route over Wifi before you head out to the road, and as long as as you leave WiFi active, Apple Maps will show and track your movements on the map in real time.I am not sure how it does this, but it works real well for me.

  • Will a US vision M work in the

    Hi,
I am considering buying a Vision M when i vist the USA next month. Can anybody tell me if it will be ok in the UK. I have been told that the radio player will not work when i bring it home. Can anybody help??Thanks

I purchase dmy Vision M at Fry's in the US last week and took it to the UK and South Africa on the way home to Australia. I never tried using the radio function in either the UK or SA, however I can confirm that the radio function worked fine in both the USA and is working fine in Australia. I am 99% sure that Australia uses the same frequency increments on the FM band that the UK does.
Also the power adaptor for the player has a voltage range from 00 to 240V. You will only get the US plug adaptor in the US package, however this simply unclips from the adaptor, and you can then insert a standard figure eight power lead such as the one shown here http://www.accesscomms.com.au/Products/K3762UK3.htm
I love my player, it is working very well for me. Make sure you buy a screen protector. I bought an iPod video electrostatic screen protector duty free at Heathrow just before departing for South Africa. It cost me about 4 pound. It has made a world of difference. No matter how careful you are, you are going to get minor scratches on the screen unless you find it some protection.
