Will anything be deleted during installation?

I'm about to install Snow Leopard 10.6.3. I have some pretty important pictures and documents. Will any movies, pictures, or documents be deleted during installation?

They shouldn't be lost or deleted during the upgrade, but as a precaution one should always have a backup of some sort on an External Hard Drive.

Personally I started using > Carbon Copy Cloner - Home way back in Tiger and Leopard and still use it today in Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion

  • Will anything be deleted when i update to OS X Lion?

I have been thinking about updating my mac to the new OS X Lion. But I am afraid that if I do something will be deleted from my mac? Have anyone else done this and does anyone know if anything is deleted?

It shouldn't delete anything from third parties or any of your personal files. But it will remove some Apple apps, like Front Row and iSync.
I have heard of people's custom Desktop backgrounds being deleted, but I cannot confirm that is is true. Make sure you make a complete backup of your whole system in any case.  DO NOT install Lion if you have no backups.

  • Will current projects delete during upgrade

    Hello,
If I upgrade from iPhoto 6 to '08 will I have to start my photo book projects again from scratch or will they be okay during the upgrade?
    Thanks.

    thanks.
if I copy the iphoto library to an external drive, does that include the book projects. is that what you mean?

  • Updated itunes, error message about mobile popped up during installation, then after installation, tunes will not start. gives error that a dll file is missing.

I downloaded the new Itunes version. During installation, there was an error message that said no Mobile access.  After installation, Itunes would not open.  Gave an error message that a DLL file was not found. Removed itunes from computer and initiated new download.  Same problem with new download. Still does not open. I'm stumped.  I have over  30,000 files in itunes and use it every day HELP

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

    error writing to file: C:\Program
    files\ i tunes\ i tunes.Resources\ja.lproj\AppleTVStream
itxib. Verify that you have access to that directory
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • Itunes 7.6 installation Fatal Error during installation

I successfully installed Itunes into my account - as the administrator. However, my other computer users users can't install the new version. The get a window that pops up: Problem with shortcut, fatal error during installation. I have tried removing and re-installing, I even followed all the steps in the trouble article #93976. I also deleted the user, created a new on, made that user an adminstrator and still can't install. HELP!

I found on another post that concerns this same topic that someone has responded with the following solution:
I ran into the same problem, but I think I have the solution. First, the problem isn't with iTunes, its an access problem with Windows XP. I tried to run the iTunes program from the Program Files, and I received an "Access Denied" error.
If you try to open the Program Files in My Computer\Local Disk(C:) and receive an "Access Denied" Error, that is why you are receiving a "shortcut problem/Fatal Error during installation".
Here is how I corrected it:
    1) Shut down the computer and restart it in "safe mode". I had to look up how to do this, but I pressed F8 when it was restarting and I highlighted the "safe mode" and started the machine. The icons will be large, but ignore it.
    2) Open a user that has administrative access -- I used the one user that has access to itunes.
    3) Go to My Computer\Local Disk (C:) and right click on the "Program Files" folder. Select "properties" at the bottom.
    4) Go to the Security Tab
    5) At the top you should see one or two users that have access to the Programs File. One will be the user that itunes works on. Click Add, then click Advanced, then click Find Now.
    6) At the bottom should appear a list of users. Select a user on which itunes doesn't work. Click Ok, then click OK again.
    7) Give that user full access to the Program File by putting a check mark in the Full Access box.
    8) Repeat for the remaining users.
    9) Restart computer in normal mode.
    10) Go into a user that had problems and click the itunes icon, and it should run.
It worked for me, I hope it works for you.
I have not tried it yet, but when I have the time to sit and actually do it, and if it works, I will definitely let you guys know!

  • Errors occurred during installation, install failed.

So recently I got into a bit of trouble when my web browsers got hacked and started installing some adware on my computer... I'm still getting that sorted out, but I think while I was going through my "Common Files" folder and deleting things that looked suspicious, I accidentally deleted some kind of file for Apple's many programs that install with iTunes.  I realized my mistake when, at the next reboot, Windows gave me an error that some program could not start due to a missing .dll file and then gave me the program name, which as it turns out was Apple Application Support.  I uninstalled the support program to attempt to correct the issue, but when I did it only broke things further!  iTunes claimed that it could not work without the support software, so I tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes to get the Application Support program back.  Sadly, this did not work either as iTunes did not uninstall correctly, freezing windows explorer.  Then when I downloaded the install file to try again, it gives me an error almost immediately saying "Errors occurred during installation, your system has not been modified.  Run the installer again."  (I'm paraphrasing)  When I run it again, the same thing happens.
In conclusion, it appears that by deleting one simple file, I have broken iTunes permanently and I can no longer use it on my computer.  Ugh.  Can anyone help me get it back?  I can't believe I'm even asking this... I'm not really an apple fan but I do use it to put videos and stuff on my iPad and I have a bunch of playlists in there that I've spent time organizing, so I still use it as my "main" mp3 player.  This is very inconveinent!

Windows gave me an error that some program could not start due to a missing .dll file and then gave me the program name, which as it turns out was Apple Application Support.  I uninstalled the support program to attempt to correct the issue,
Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you?
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

i bought htc 8x verizon employee edition and when i update it and during installation with my error phone get off and now phone stuck on some wheel running thing and wont get on please tell me if i could download the rom or anything also

Hi mnomi! Sorry to learn of the trouble you're running into with your new phone! Have you already switched the device via your My Verizon : http://vz.to/16lkVUY Once you have done this, and verify the sim card is inserted securely, the activation will begin. If the phone is stuck on the wheel and you cannot move forward, you may want to do an alternative reset. Please follow the below instructions:
    1) Ensure the device is powered off.
    2) Press and hold the Volume Down button (located on the right edge) until instructed to release in step 4.
    3) Press and hold the Power button (located on the top-right edge) until the device vibrates (approximately 2 seconds) then release.
    4) When the restore screen appears (exclamation mark), release the Volume Down button.
    5) From the restore screen, press then release the following keys to initiate the reset process:
    1. Volume Up button
    2. Volume Down button
    3. Power button
    4. Volume Down button
*Allow several minutes for the process to complete (rotating gears appear on the display to indicate that the reset is in progress).
If you have any further questions or concerns, please let us know. Keep us posted if this resolves your concerns. Thanks!

  • Ilife 08 crashes during installation

during installation, when the installer gets to iphoto '8 segment it just crashes. other softwares got updated (idvd and imovie '08). anyone with similar experience/solutions?

    isn:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It could be a damage installer disk. You can try the following:
1 - boot into Safe Mode and try installing there. If there is anything installed in your account that was the culprit it is not loaded in Safe Mode and the install should work. If the install fails at that point again I'd suspect the disk.
2 - a second confirmation of a bad disk would be to use Pacifist to locate, extract and install just iPhoto from the iLife disk. If it can't extract iPhoto then I'd bet it's the disk.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Holding the power key on your computer should allow you to restart your computer. You can also try to force quit the installer.
