Will aperture run off an external firewire 800 drive?

Hey All,
I have an iMac that has firewire 800 as its fastest port and my aperture library is getting too big to have on my maun hard drive. If I were to get an external enclosure will I be able to move my aperture library over and still have the same fluid workflow or am I going to get lag going over firewire 800?
Thanks
Ruwan

Adding to Williams advice:
You might consider leaving your Library on your system drive and moving most (or all) of your Images' Originals from inside your Library to an external drive.  Aperture calls Originals stored outside your Library "Referenced Originals" and has robust tools for managing them.  Read some of the posts here (and check the User Manual -- start here) and ask any questions you have should you choose this route.
As William said, FW800 with a good drive is usually fast enough, but keeping your Library on your system and storing your Images' Originals on an external drive will be faster.  OTOH, it makes administering your Library and Originals more complex, and leaves you to back-up your Originals separately from your Library.

  • Computer crash with iTunes - Using external firewire 800 drive

I am using an external firewire 800 drive (2TB Lacie) to store all my music for iTunes... At random times this crashes the computer, the music "skips" and the computer has a grey notice telling me to shutdown immediately. I am not sure why this is happening, but think this must be some sort of conflict issue... but no clue how to resolve... Any advice would be great!! Thanks!

Oh no, sounds like kernel panics. Time to head directly to The X Lab to read the FAQs and get started with maintenance and troubleshooting. Unfortunately, this problem goes way beyond iTunes, so for additional support, you should post in the appropriate OS X forum.

  • External Firewire 800 Drive Shuts Down

I am using an external Other World Computing hard drive enclosure with a Seagate 2 TB Barracuda XT drive formatted as a single volume. The drive seems to be in proper working order and I haven't lost any data. However, every once in a while the drive power light will go off and the drive will go off line. Then it attempts to mount, but isn't able to.
I have experienced this behavior with 2 Seagate drives in different enclosures, so it doesn't seem to be a problem with the drive or enclosure itself. Could this be a problem with the Firewire 800 port on my Mac Pro?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    -Michael

Do your external enclosures use an external Power Supply? You may be drawing too much power from the FireWire cable. This problem is much more common with unpowered USB drive enclosures that have limited ability to get power from USB.

  • Can't boot from clone on external firewire 800 drive

    Hello,
I have a 24" mid-2007 iMac 7,1 running Snow Leopard. I recently changed my set up to put a clean install of OS X 10.9.1 on a partition of an external SSD. I also moved the 10.6.8 start up system to a partition on the SSD. My internal iMac hard drive now has no system folder, only my data files. I have additional firewire drives for Time Machine, other data and media drives. Finally, I just bought a pair of 3TB drives that I partitioned into enough partitions to be able to clone both operating systems and all my data files for a rotating pair of offsite backups. All moving/cloning of drives was done with version 3.5.4 (Mavericks-compatible) of Carbon Copy Cloner.
I can boot from my external SSD (either Mavericks or Snow Leopard) fine and all external drives mount correctly in either case. After cloning all the partitions onto the backup drives, I tried to test the clones but I am not able to start up using either the Mavericks or the Snow Leopard clones when the backup external drive is connected via firewire 800. This is true whether I select the clone volumes in the Startup Disk preferences pane or hold down the option key during start up (note that the external drive with the clone partitions does not appear in the list of disk choices with the option key method). I get the "question mark in the folder" sign that the start up system is not being found.
I have changed the order in which the external drives are connected (normally the SSD is first in the chain), including trying when only the backup drive is connected directly to the iMac. I get the same result no matter what.
Curiously, the Mavericks and Snow Leopard boot clones start up via firewire 800 when the external backup drive is connected to my wife's 2009 13" Macbook Pro, indicating that the clones and the enclosure (an OWC Mercury Elite Pro quad interface, newer version with USB3) both support booting. Furthermore, if I connect the backup drive to my iMac using USB, the boot clones both work to start up the iMac.
This all points to an issue with the firewire bus failing to recognize the boot clones somehow during my iMac's start up process. I am rather puzzled about how to fix this.
I can get by booting via USB in an emergency but because my system is old, this is of course USB2 so its slow. If I had to use the clones to recover I'd rather be able to operate and restore at FW800 speeds.
If anyone has any ideas what might be going on, I'd appreciate hearing them.
    Thanks in advance.

Did you ever get this resolved, Greg?

  • Bus Powered External Firewire (800) Drives and iPod?

I bought a WD Passport drive, and was pretty upset when i found out that the usb ports on my powerbook cannot power the drive. crap. can the firewire 800 port on my powerbook power these drives:
    http://www.kanotechnologies.com/products/SF800-40.cfm
    http://www.g-technology.com/Products/G-DRIVE-mini.cfm#Buy
I really want a bus powered drive. does anyone know if these will work with my 15" powerbook? one better than the other? oh, and i'm getting it to keep my itunes library on...so will my powerbook have any problem with reading the fw800 drive and the ipod in the fw400 port at the same time?

Well the second linked drive says it is bus powered and does not require a external power brick. Usually most of external 2.5 inch notebook drives (in a 2.5 enclosure) can be bus powered. The 3.5 inch ones are generally not bus powered.

iMac suddenly stopped recognizing my firewire 800 gdrives. worked this afternoon, and the drives worked on my macbook pro. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Reset the SMC > Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Then the PRAM > About NVRAM and PRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
    Reconnect your FireWire Drive.

    Hi
I've just purchased a Western Digital Mybook Pro 500 gig. It only cost me £180 and Its works excellently with large DV files and heavy graphics. File transfer rate is rapid using Firewire 800! They even have a 1TB model that's RAID 1/0 capable. Check out:

  • Logic Studio - Presonus Firepod w/ Firewire 800 Drive (Firewire Issues?)

    Hi all,
Having a problem on this end. I had picked up a Lacie 160gig bus-powered external HD. I had wanted to run this over Firewire 800, but it's not working.
Whenever I open the HD, my audio cuts out and remains cut until I reboot the system. The Firepod is running off Firewire 400, still get a connection (blue light), but no sound.
The problem only exhibits itself when I open up the HD.
Anyone else having issues running an external audio interface via Firewire 400 and an external Firewire 800 drive?
    Thanks,
    -B

Have a FW400 Focusrite Saffire Pro and a WD HD on the FW800. They wont work together on the built-in FW400 and FW800 ports of the MBP. Had to get a FW400 Expresscard and put the Saffire on that and the HD on the built-in FW800 port to get them to work together. Also please notice how professional using a lot of capital letter acronyms makes me seem.

I notice quite a difference in two of my externals because of that (the 5400 rpm drive was a warranty replacement and I had no idea it wouldn't be 7200 rpm - but that's another subject.....).

  • External Firewire 800 or Ethernet?

I'm in need of more Hard Drive space for my video footage but, have a lowish budget.
wondering if it would be better to buy an ethernet External or Firewire 800?
which transfers data faster and more efficiently and do you have one that works really well for you?
    that i should look into.
    thanks

A good fw800 RAID 0 drive will allow for 7 or so simultaneous streams of DV or HDV video and will run ProRes422. A firewire 400 drive will run 3-4 streams of DV/HDV but not ProRes422.
An ethernet (aka network attached drive) is not designed for video and may choke on 1 stream of DV.

  • Time Machine Server - external firewire 800 RAID array incompatible??

    Hi all
I originally posted in the wrong forum... so here I go again...
I have an XServe G5 connected to an 8TB RAID array via firewire 800 (running latest version of leopard server) purchased solely to act as a time machine server for a whole bunch of machines. A lot of money and resources went toward this as this is a vital part of our office. One of the machines is a completely decked out Mac Pro with 4x500GB Hard Drives striped for multimedia processing. (Thats why I need a HUGE backup partition on Time Machine)
Now, this was working for about 4 months. Some computers still see the backup array as a destination, but can't write to it, (just sit there for ever "preparing backup") and one machine successfully is still backing up to it.
But for the majority of the machines, when I try to set the Xserve external raid array as a Time Machine destination for the network, it comes up with a yellow "!" sign and "This disk drive may not support Time Machine over the network. Get more information about compatible drives" with a link that points here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306332
As you can see, that was completely not helpful, and now i'm wondering if I'll still have a job after the boss finds out I've just wasted his several thousands of dollars...
When selecting a backup destination for time machine backups, the array appears, but it always says "Failed" with an "i" next to Latest Backup in the system preferences, with the message "Backup volume cannot be found". Thats not true because i've so much as gone to the effort of actually mounting the dang drive in the finder... so its just not looking hard enough!
Here is some info about the external device:
It looks like a PC tower thing, with 8 firewire 800 ports on the back and 8 internal SATA slots. I purchased 8x1TB drives and inserted them in, and software partitioned them to create a giant striped drive (I understand that this might be a little unstable but its just a backup drive).
I daisy chained the firewire 800 ports on the back to output 2 cables, both going in the back of the xserve. Formatted fine, and works a treat. Except for the silly time machine thing....
I think what I am going to do is completely and utterly start again... go nuts one weekend and erase everything, every computer, every wireless router, everything, and start fresh. Since there have been so many little glitches here and there I just want them dead.
Well, if anyone has a quick fix, i'd appreciated it before the weekend

Hi everyone, Just thought I would give you all an update on how things went.
Lets just say that I got everything working fine... this is what I did.
    1. I went through, completely un-raided and formatted the external 8 Bay firewire 800 drive
    2. Completely reformatted XServe and reinstalled fresh (Probably not an option for a few, but I had a spare weekend)
    3. Completely reformatted all client computers and reset all client accounts (Once again, probably not an option for most)
Essentially, I was starting out with a completely virgin setup and setting up for the first time. I installed the firewire 800 drives, and made them into a RAID again. Then installed Leopard server. Brought all the backed up files across, and when I plugged in the drive in Finder, it asked "Do you want to use this as a time machine backup" to which I said "Yes". It proceeded to create a backup.
When that finished, I went into server preferences, and selected the external as a time machine backup for the network. It worked...
I then went about everything like business as usual, and everything worked great. Still going... for now.
So thanks for all that helped, maybe try completely reinstalling everything and it may work.

  • Can't run Firewire 800 Drive and Firewire 400 Camera at same time?

I just bought a 1TB firewire 800 drive for time machine. Works great. Problem is, when I plug in my Canon DV via firewire at the same time the 800 is connected it doesn't work. I have to unmount the HD, turn it off, and even THEN it wont recognize the DV camera. I have to physically unplug the firewire 800 to get my Canon DV to mount. Amazing. Never had problems with the DV before. Is there some hardware reason why I can't run an 800 and 400 firewire at the same time? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Some DV cameras won't work with anything else connected to the FireWire bus (the FW400 and FW800 share the same bus)
... in particular Canon cameras (Canon firewire implementation) are very sensitive to other firewire devices.

  • I have a Power Mac G4 (2004) and want to transfer all my files to a new MacBook Pro 15.4". Can this be done thru firewire cable or do I have to transfer to an external Firewire 800 hard drive first?

I have a Power Mac G4 (2004) and want to transfer all my files to a new MacBook Pro 15.4". Can this be done thru firewire cable or do I have to transfer to an external Firewire 800 hard drive first?

Do it with a Firewire cable (buy a 800/400 adapter if you need it) - the USB transfer takes a much longer time.
Start up your old PowerMac G4 holding down the "T" key, for target disk mode.
On your new MacBook Pro open "Migration Assistant" in your utilities folder.
Connect the 2 computers by firewire cable and follow the prompts in Migration Assistant.

  • Will Aperture run OK on iBook G4?

Hi everybody! I am new to this forum, and I'm hoping for great answers!
Well, I've had a brief look at Aperture, and it looks perfect for my every-day photography. The only "but" is that I'm running an iBook G4. I am not a professional photographer, but I am going to use RAW files in Aperture. I know that it will install in the first place, but will it run OK? It doesn't have to be supersmooth, but a certain speed is required.
Will Aperture run OK on an iBook G4?
    Thanks for all answers!

Aperture a waste of money: absolutely not!!
I think you are looking at the issue at end for the opposite end of the telescope.
As I said there are many things you can do with it even on a modest configuration, as long as you are not dreaming about doing real-time 16bits/color image adjustments.
10 megapix RAW images are tough files to handle. They are a new frontier. With my trusty copy of Graphic Converter it took 35 seconds to get a simple preview on my PBG4 15". Unusable. Nikon capture ran slow, so did DxO. Even photoshop ran slow on large images.
Aperture is interesting precisely for that kind of files. It solves the problem of handling those pesky RAW files that I had completely given up on because of the software and computer end. I shoot RAW again, and the result is often way better.
But up until yesterday, you needed a powerful desktop machine to handle serious photo work, or had to restrain yourself to 8bit/color images (jpeg) which are often inferior looking (especially if the picture was not exposed perfectly and you needed some exposure compensation afterwards).
Recent mac laptops are levelling the playing field and allowing laptops to be a viable alternative to a desktop again.
Of course with a slower machine you can always "develop" RAW files one at a time, with this or that. but the true magic of Aperture is to manipulate RAW with as much flexibility, comfort and long-term anticipation of future needs as if it were JPEGs. I think that's priceless but it does cost more CPU cycles....
So this is why I'm saying you might be looking at this from the wrong end: the G4 is basically a 5 years old processor. It won't get any better soon, and it will never get up to the precise challenge at hand here...
Aperture (and other tools emerging now such as Dxo etc) need us to rethink our approach to computer processing of photos, and this is not just a marketing gimmick, it's real...
Hope this helps putting things in the right kind of light..
    yours truly
