I currently have the 500 GB Solid State Drive in my 2014 15inch Macbook Pro. Due to my usage requirments (videography). I was wondering if i paid for it, could i get apple to install the drive in my macbook?

No. But you can add an external drive for storage uses. However, if you bought it within the past 14 days from date of purchase you can exchange for the model you prefer unless it is a CTO model.

None, at that price it would be so small as to be practically worthless.
You need about 500 GB to future proof and grow into, and those run about $1200-$1500
SSD's really don't offer that much more performance, it still takes the computer 20 seconds to boot and programs still have to set themselves up so. So although the computer and programs launch a bit faster, it's not instant.
Then to really take advantage of SSD speed, you need to have to have a large amount of files to transfer constantly, to another SSD (or else the slow hard drive slows everything down)
So if you have 500GB to transfer to another 500GB SSD, then that would take about 30 minutes compared to a hour if you had a hard drive instead.
And if you transfer a large amount of data often with a SSD, it wears it out prematurely. SSD's don't even have secure erase ability because allowing that would prematurely wear it out.
So the only thing SSD's are good for are OS boot and program only drives, where little changes, place one's user files on a external 7,200 RPM drive with more space and can handle a large amount of writes and rewrites.
Unfortuntly in a MacBook Pro you have only one space for a drive, you could use a kit to remove the Superdrive and replace it with the hard drive when you add the SSD. Problem with that is you can't boot from any OS X or Windows install disks that way.
So there you have it, SSD is crap.

Yes. I have used and recommend OWC's Mercury models and OCZ's Vertex 3 models. They do work in Macs. Depending upon the model you have you should get either 3 Gb/s or 6 Gb/s drive. That will depend upon your computer's disk drive bus support - SATA II or SATA III, respectively.

That is a question only Apple can answer and the purchaser must decide if the price is worth it. Apples pricing for upgrades in the past has often been such that third party RAM and HHDs/SSDs were less expensive. However those options are no longer available with the retina MBPs.

Will a Hybrid or Solid State Drive improve my FCP Editing experience?

hello folks.
i want to improve my macbook pro video editing performance and hope that upgrading my 5400 rpm internal hdd to at least a 7200 rpm drive will do the trick.
BUT then i began considering SSD and Hybrid and wonder INSTEAD of just a regular 7200 rpm drive. unfortunately, all i read about is improved boot up times with Hybrid and SSD, which don't really concern me.
questions:
1. Will i experience increased write and read speads with the Hybrid and SSD over a regular 7200 rpm drive?
2. Will my FCP 7 and Compressor work smoother (ie smoother playback of files, faster rendering/compressing) with the Hybrid and/or SSD drive orver a regular 7200 rpm drive?
3. Are there any other suggestions on upgrades that are resonably priced? (By the way, i am interested in upgrading the INTERNAL drive because i love the ability to video edit without being weighed down by cables, external hdds, etc, even if its just for a couple hours. i AM still open to external options though).
Problems/Purpose i hope upgrade will address:
- currently, FCP 7 stutters when playing back Prores 422 (hq) at 1920x1080 footage from the bin or time lime. QT also seizes up after a few seconds.
- i use my laptop for editing prores 422 (hq) at 1920x1080 and compressing XDCAM and H.264.

Will apple replace a faulty or bad logic board on my 2013 MacBook Pro?

I have a late 2013 13" macbook pro that has been diagnosed, by a non apple provider, with a bad logic board. The place where i took it suggested getting that confirmed with Apple. I have an appointment tomorrow at my local apple dealer...
but am worried that this practically new laptop is toast or going to be very costly since I don't have applecare!! Any help for me????

my late 2013 13" pro also has a bad logic board. The diag said it was a memory failure. I'm 3 months out of warranty and had it sent to the repair center for $280 plus tax. I don't feel like the logic board was defective I just didn't catch it in time. I tried a restore a few months ago and it worked better because i was in Yosemite beta since the developers beta and I thought the issues were because of the betas. It has constant panics and restarts but I was trying to get by until now it wouldn't turn on and disk utility said the hard drive was not mounted and it wouldn't let me restore It. maybe there are a few more people with problems then there should be so soon.

HT1751 I cannot seem to get through this process. I believe I have copied the library from my old to the external drive, and then to my newer MacBook Pro; but the result is the same number of songs that were originally transferred via the transfer proces

I've tried for a few days to figure out why I cannot be sure that my iTunes back-up to an external drive has "worked" or not. I finally decided to try to transfer the content from the external drive to my newer MacBook Pro. I already knew that the number of songs on the newer laptop were fewer than what are on my older one. (I basically only use my older MacBook Pro now for iTunes.) But today, still had not luck. There is still a difference of over 100 songs appearing on the iTunes of the newer laptop than are on the older one.
I'm pretty sure that I just don't undertand the Apple article very well: "ITunes: back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive."
This would not be so frustrating for me did I not have over 3000 songs, imported from CDs that I myself own, in my old laptop. The thought of redoing this import is, well, tiring to say the least.

iPhoto on the iPad and on your Mac ar completely different programs. They do not sync in both directions.

When you upload photos to your iPad bysyncing albums and events to it using iTunes, and then edit some photos, and connect the iPad again and sync again, then the synced albums will be replaced on the iPad by the new set of albums. The changes will not sync back to iPhoto on your Mac.
If you want the edited image to appear on your mac, savea new copy to the camera roll and then connect the iPad to your Mac. Import selected photos from the camera rolll to iPhoto.

Considering upgrading to solid state drive for Macbook Pro 2010. What are the specific requirements?

I am starting to experience some problems (very minor issues w speed) w my 2010 MBP. I decided to try and reformat w the install disk but it stalled on the grey screen and when I took it to the Genius Bar and they said they could do the re-install but that they think there could be a problem with the hard drive and it may crash completely after a re-install. They suggested an SSD. I found one on the iFix it site (SanDisk's top of the line X210 256 GB SSD) and am wondering what are the features I need to look for in an SSD if I go this route? Are there other parts in the MBP that will probably break in the next couple of years anyway? Will I see a big improvement in speed?

yes, you should definately swap the drive out, but be sure that the ssd you wish to purchase will be compatable with your mac.
yes, the mac will seem a lot faster. also give a thought to adding more ram, i believe your model is capable of quite happily handling 8g. 2 x 4g sticks.
no one can be sure of the future, so, if your mac is running well apart from the above then dont be concerned untill a problem occurs.

500 gb 7200rpm hard drive vs 128 gb solid state drive

I am considering buying a macbook pro laptop the 15 inch with the i7 processor. I will probably get the anti glare screen. What I am on the fence about is whether it is worth the extra money to get the solid state drive or the 7200 rpm drive. I would like something that might be faster than the standard 5400rpm drive, I have read these are laptop drives & they are a bit slower than a 7200rpm drive which seems to be standard in desktops. With performance & speed being very important to me; (I will be doing video editing in both standard def & high def) I would consider upgrading the hard drive to the 7200 rpm or the solid state. Another factor is the hard drive capacity, this is not as big an issue as I keep most of my content on external hard drives.
I need a little help in deciding, I am new to macs I am coming from a 7 year old windows xp home desktop PC. this will be one of my biggest purchases.

I bought a 160 Gbyte Intel SSD, replaced the internal drive and that in a case to use as an external. I also have an SSD in my Mini. Using an SSD is a major improvement. Fragmentation is no longer an issue. Applications start up very fast, some instantaneously. The computer starts up in less than 10 seconds. In short, all operations requiring disc reads are lightning fast. There really is no downside, unless you are bothered by using an external drive for very large files (but then, you would probably use an external drive for that purpose regardless).
The Intel SSD may be above your budget (it is about twice the price for 160 Gbytes than the built to order with 128 Gbytes). If that is the case, just get the built to order and you can add an external drive for very little money if an when you need it.
I bought a 15" i7 and used it for a couple of days before I swapped the drives. In comparison, the stock drive made the computer feel sluggish. With the SSD, it is snappy, fast and responsive.
Others may disagree, but personally I do not believe that you will get anywhere near the improvement with a 7200 rpm drive. The SSD is tops. Also, by the way, they are silent, which I like.

Solid State Drive .vs. 2TB Hard Drive (Finder Sidebar)

Hello all,
I just purchased a new 27-inch iMac, which comes with a 256 GB Solid State Drive and a 2 TB SATA Hard Drive. Before purchasing the iMac, I had read that the Solid State Drive was designed to be used for the System and Applications, while the SATA Hard Drive would be used to store all application data files (Pictures, Movies, Music, etc.).
However, the Finder Sidebar icons (Documents, Pictures, Movies, Music, etc.) are linked to the associated folders on the Solid State Drive. So when I click on any of the Sidebar icons, I am directed to the folder contens on the Solid State Drive.
How do I set up my iMac so that the 2 TB SATA drive is the default storage drive. I'm guessing that there has to be a way to configure the Sidebar such that when I click on one of the icons (Documents), I'm directed to the Documents folder on the 2 TB Hard Drive and not the Solid State Drive.

I went through a similar issue with a Seagate Momentus 750GB HDD/8GB SSD with my late-2011 MBP. No matter what I tried, the machine would not recognize the drive.
To test it, I installed the drive in an old ThinkPad, and it worked fine. Then I tried installing it in my PS3, and the drive worked fine there, too. It was only the MBP which had issues.
I don't *think* Macs have a BIOS to update. But I know my MBP has issues with certain HDD's (including another external which works fine on other Macs and all Windows machines).
You might be able to find my thread by searching under my username, perhaps something in there will offer a tip. Otherwise, you might have to go the same route I did: install a WD Scorpio Black instead. Or upgrade to an SSD.

Select the Recovery partition. It should boot to a screen like this:
Select Disk Utility and reformat your boot drive, formatting with a single GUID partition as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". Once the partition is erased go back to Reinstall Mac OS X and install the OS on your newly formatted partition. It may take a while and if you downloaded Mavericks from the Mac App Store (duh!) you may need your Apple ID and password handy.
Installing the OS may take quite some time as it will necessitate downloading the 5GB+ OS file.
Now you'll be able to make a clean installation of everything.
