Will archive and install save my music and photos?

I had to do all this because my iMac wasn't going past the grey screen with the Apple logo
after turning off my computer after installing an apple security update
which i've noticed a lot of people had problems with. I tried the disk repair thing and it showed no problems but still didn't work. Then I saw in a dis ussion that doing this would help.
Right now it's on the first disk of instalation and I am now wrried that this won't work and my stuff will be lost.

corin4, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Now that you have installed the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Since you did an Archive & Install, all of your settings (internet, mail, etc) should also be retained.
 Cheers, Tom

  • Will Archive and Instal erase my version of iLife?

If I decide to use the archive and instal method as will it completely erase iLife because I do not have an installer disk because it came pre-installed into my Mac Mini

Archive and Install doesn't erase anything. It merely renames the old System folder Previous System folder.
And if available the save user network settings if unchecked will move the old users folders into the Previous System folder.
Erase and Install does just what it says.
If you are missing the discs that came with your computer, it should have come with some even if software was preinstalled. If you got it from a non-authorized vendor, ask them to give you the discs.
If they lost them, they should call AppleCare, and give you the discs. They belong to that machine.
If you bought the machine from an authorized dealer, or you can't reach the original seller anymore, call AppleCare:

  • Will Archive and Install fix my Print Problems?

Was running 10.39, all was fine.
Repaired Permissions, used Tiger Update DVD
to update from my 10.39 to Tiger 10.4.
Rebooted, repaired permissions from Tiger Disc.
Rebooted, installed OSX 10.4.4 Combo update to
    get up to latest Tiger.
Ran all patches I need from Software update,
    rebooted to Tiger Update DVD,
    repaired all permissions.
Rebooted back, now I cannot print to my Canon i560 USB printer.
I get the dreaded "services-" error.
    I re-downloaded the driver from Canon's Website
(disc is misplaced right now). Tried to load it, got to
a part in the installer, and hung. After half and hour,
force quit it, rebooted, tried the "Printer Repair Permissions" fix, Printer Utility now shows the Canon Printer as a USB printer, but the driver selection gives
me a lot of "BJ-Gimp" printer selections, but no "i560".
Now the kicker: I took the printer and disconnected it
from the Mac, and connected it to my wife's iBook,
which runs 10.4.3, and it found and connected flawlessly,
and I could get a PDF printed.
My other issues on this mac is that Compressor has stopped
working, but I have got it to the point of where it
at least run somewhat using a Terminal fix I found
on the forums. But I'm strongly thinking that to get this
baby into shape and running smoothly like the iBook
does, I should do an Archive and Install of OSX 10.4,
then patch up to 10.4.3, then possibly 10.4.4.
Any thoughts before I make the attempt?

Thanks, after a looooong night of re-installing
back from DVD to 10.4, then up to 10.4.3,
    (why press my luck?)
then re-installing FCP 4 and DVDSP 3, and doing all patches, both my Compressor 1.21 works great as before, and I got my printer settings back. I did have a bit of a bout with the
"blue screen of death" but all is great now!

  • Need some help archiving and photos that are in multiple collections.

After creating a new catalog for photos from a collection, I'd want to remove the photos from Lightroom and keep on disk.  In the collection, there are some photos that are in multiple other collections and I'd want to keep those images in their other collections and so not removed them from Lightroom.
Need some advice on how to easily identlfy those images that are in other collections and thus might not want to remove those images from Lightroom.

Well, Bob, that works, but agreeing with Geoff, I don't think this is the best solution to the problem; in fact I don't even think this is a good solution to this problem.
If there isn't a lot of space left, and the user wants to do something about the photos in those collections, then the photos should be moved (in Lightroom, or via this process: http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm) to a different drive. This generates more free space on the SSD drive. The photos remain in the Lightroom catalog, and they remain in the multiple collections that they are in now.
MrhoniKeith -- your photos probably should not go on the SSD in the first place. Photos ought to be stored on a normal hard drive, not an SSD. You can move them to a regular hard drive en masse, freeing up plenty of space on the SSD via this method: http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm. This is the BEST solution to your problem -- keep everything in a single catalog, with photos on a normal hard disk. The idea of having multiple catalogs to help free up space on one drive works opposite to the best practices of using Lightroom, in which most people recommend using a single catalog for all of your photos, except in special cases where the photo's contents are completely non-overlapping, for example Personal and Business catalogs.
Removing photos from some collections but not others will NOT free up space. That's not how Lightroom works. Lightroom has not made multiple copies of your photos for each collection. Deleting photos from collections will NOT free up space.

  • Archive and Install/ original settings

I keep having various problems with my G5. I want to archive and install again. I want the original settings/default settings for everything. While I have tried to "fix" all my computer issues, I have tinkered with my computer so much that I just want to start fresh. Will archive and install do this or do I have to erase everything and start all over? I can't seem to find the answer anywhere else. Thanks
    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

An Archive and Install will install a fresh System (folder) but preserve your User's folder, which many or some of the preferences are kept, so your app after launch, its look, settings etc will still be the same.
This may be good or bad, depending if it is the preference files that maybe corrupted or damaged that has been giving you problems. But one thing for sure is this install will not "bring over" any 3rd party "hacks" that you have installed (they appear in your System Preference Pane, e.g. Norton, Wacom, etc)
Do the A&I Install first, then slowly move, re-install and re-configure any (creditable) 3rd party software you have, try and stay away from too many "hacks" and enhancers for the time being, especially if you have use them in the past, 'cause it may be one of those, or between 2 or more that causes conflict and problems for your mac originally
The worst-case would be a complete reformat and re-install of everything, but I don't think you need to go to that extreme
    Cheers

  • Archive and Install help

After getting the blue screen when installing Leopard, I've decided to re-install using the "Archive and Install" feature. After reading the documents here on Apple's site, I'm a bit confused. Can someone please give me a Coles Notes version of how Archive and Install works? Mainly:
What do I need to backup myself? There's a document on Apple's site which discusses the steps for backing up your address book and such... doesn't Archive and Install do this?
I also have Adobe CS3 on my Mac. Will I have to re-install this?
And my wife has some widgets on our computer... I'm thinking that this could be the third party apps that aren't Leopard compatible. Will Archive and Install clear these too?
Message was edited by: Paul Ouimette

    Hi Paul Ouimette;
Yes, the Archive & Install does back up the previous system so saying that you should backup may seen a bit redundant. The only problem with that logic is that it assumes that the A&I will go perfectly. If for any reason it doesn't, you can be left high and dry. Most time it does go well but personally I am a bit of a belt and suspenders guy so I always create a clone before doing anything as major as an A&I.
I did an A&I recently and my applications were there. I did have to enter the serial number for CS3 and Aperture again. My dashboard widgets were there though.

  • Failed 'Archive and Install' - will CLI ditto or rsync save me?

I've done an 'Archive and Install' that ran properly, executed the restart, and then presented a message saying the installation can not be completed because of insufficient space on the target volume. To be clear, the computer restarts in the 'Installer' and displays the error message. I click 'OK' and it does a little loop and reappears. I can't properly quit the installer, force-quit, restart, anything. So I eventually power down.
    More info :
I can boot from the install disk and in the system profiler I see 9.5 gigs free on the HD. The SMART status is verified. In fact the 'Hardware' section and 'Network' section seems okay, the 'Software' sections reveal the faults. Here I see no mounted applications, no extensions, no frameworks, etc. It's as if I can see where the install gave up. I have run disk utility and repaired the disk, the permissions, and it returns no errors and a nice green message. I ran DiskWarrior and it found nothing to repair. I was able to see my files in the preview, including my sparse image, but decided not to go ahead with a re-build, because I don't think that's going to save my system folder that's split in two. (From the failed A&I)
I am using FileVault and I am aware that these forums advise that I should have disabled it before trying the installation. Alas, the drive-space overhead was not to be found. I did, however, have room enough for the install, I thought. (And I do have my most critical data backed up, but not the whole system.) When I ran the install from the OS X DVD it indicated 15.6 gigs necessary for installation. I had in excess of 18. I know, I know, too close for comfort, and the FileVault image probably needed more overhead, and...
Chalk it up to knowledge and change.
So now I've got that external FW drive I should have had in the first place and I want to clone my whole HD over so I can start anew with an 'Erase and Install'. (Unless somebody thinks of something better. Bless the previous system?)
I'm not an idiot, but new to the command line (at least since the GUI has existed). I'm wanting to try this :
    ditto source target
    or
rsync -xrlptgoEv --progress --delete / /Volumes/target
Do I need to be in 'single user mode' (root - which I can access), or should I execute from the terminal via the install disk?
I just want to be sure I get this right, I'm confident that my data is there I just need to finesse it out.
Advance thanks to Kappy, your posts have saved me before...

Doesn't really sound like archive and install would be of much benefit to you, with as fubarred as everything sounds. However, you would at least have what you had before, just in case there's some unixy or other obscure thing that you did in the past that you need to reinstall because of the reversion to an OEM state. After 10.4.0 is reinstalled from DVD, then apply the OS 10.4.11 combo ppc update to get you up to the latest and greatest in one fell swoop. I believe that QT7.4 came out later than 10.4.11 release so that should be okay. Don't know about QT7.3, though.

  • HT1710 If I click archive and install and it says moves existing system files to a folder named previous system , will this save my photos tol

I have to restore my Mac mini and i want to click on archive and install and it says it will move existing files to a folder but I need to know wether my photos will be moved too because I have 5 years worth of photos on there. If my photos will not be moved could I take it too a store and they could put them onto a USB stick for me.

"Archive and install" is an option in early versions of OS X installers. It moves some parts of the previous system to a folder called "Previous System" and installs the new OS.
There is also an option to presever user data and settings. See this document. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1710
If you have 5 years' worth of photos and you do not want to lose them, then you NEED to have a backup. Hard drives can fail. Suddenly. Particularly on aging hardware. Computers can get stolen, set on fire or have drinks spilt over them.
If you do not have a backup, you should EXPECT to lose your files.
You should not need a store to make a copy of your files. Get an external drive, or use DVDs and move the files in the Finder. If you're using Leopard already, then you have Time Machine.

  • After Archive and Install, music and photos lost

    Hello, I installed Leopard yesterday on my Imac desktop and it went fine, but then somehow it locked me out of the hard drive, and then...the blue screen. I put the orginal Tiger disk back in and re-installed the previous software, opting for 'archive and install'. It worked but my question is this;
Within the previous system folder, my music and photos are still missing. All I see is the iphoto icon which opens to a completely empty program. (Yet the info on this Icon says it is a 1 gb in there). Are my photos lost, really? And if not, how may I retrieve them? Thanks in advance.

You may find it in the Previous System Folder created during an Archive and Install that contains your old system. Assuming you have no need for its contents you can delete the PSF and recover the disk space.
Of course if the hard drive is corrupted then you may have performed an Archive and Install on a corrupted drive which will result in a corrupted installation. Consider doing the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • After Archive and Install, will I lose all my contacts and apps?

I recently had to do an Archive and Install of OS-X 10.4 and I'm in the process of getting everything up to date.
I need to know if after this process when I try to sync my iPhone if I will lose all my contacts, music, and/or apps?
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you,
    Matt

    Hi JTatro
An Arhive and Install will keep your documents, photos, files, etc, in a folder called previous system, so no, you won't lose them.
But to be safer still, it would be even better to backup these precious files to another location, like to DVD or another drive.
If this answered your question, please consider awarding stars.

  • Will an archive and install solve account problems?

I want to remove old accounts and create a new one. Currently, I have to authenticate whenever I want to save any of my files. Somehow I fouled up the user library. Will an archive and install of the OS (10.5.8) correct this on my iMac PPC?

Backup all of your data before starting anything.
If you go with Niel's solution,  be sure to get a copy of all your data.
There are several way of proceding:
    1) fix permissions on your account.
    2) You could copy all your files to a flash drive.  Delete on the hd.  Copy files back to hd.  This will adjust the permissions.
    3) create a new account.  copy old data to flash drive.  Copy data to new account.
    I'd create a new account.
Download BatChmod 1.51.  Will allow you to change your permissions.
    Works on 10.5 and 10.6
I am using 1.51 on Mac OS 10.4.11
    Download BatChmod 1.37
(for previous system versions as 1.5 has not been tested on any other system, though may work.)
    http://www.macchampion.com/arbysoft/BatchMod/Download.html
    Create new Account
    blue apple > system preferences
    clicks on accounts icon
click on lock icon if locked.
    enter logon password
click on + icon ( left side of screen just above the lock icon )
after creating new account, you need to logout of your current account.
blue apple > log out ... current count name ...
log on to new account. see if problem goes away.
if it has gone  away, some preference file got messed up on your account. Rename the appropriate  Preference file. You will have to figure out the name.   They are .plist files.  Look for these files in Preferences folder which is in your Library folder [ more formally ~/Library/Preferences ].  ... reboot.
    Post back for more help.

How can I get them back on my Iphone 4s and scrap this stupid icloud that I did not want or ask for in the first place. Why can't rotten apple ask if you want the dam icloud rather than just stealing everything without permission and then you can only have access to it through wifi.

Wow, just posting and it seems that there is a solution that is working for me...
What I've did is I turned off iTunes Match on my iPhone, then turned in on again. Now in my iTunes library on my mac I can get the duplicates to be matched or uploaded to iCloud with a right-click, add to iCloud. iTunes Match starts to check the songs and everything is done correctly. Pretty nice!

Unfortunely, all movies and songs purchased in iTunes will be lost...you'll have to purchase them again! Any applications you've purchased, you can download again for free.
Music Rescue is a program you can use to transfer any and all data (music, movies, pictures..) from your iPod to your computer, and iTunes.

I tried to install an itunes update yesterday on my Dell Laptop.  I kept getting an error message.  Now I cannot access itunes and it says I need to reinstall itunes.  Will I lose all of my music?

Installing, and uninstalling, applications never touches or removes the data.
Clean out and uninstall all the apple programs and software thru Programs and manually.
Might want to use Revo and CCleaner
I always use manual standalone installers (and keep a couple backup versions)
itunes 10.5 may affect iTunes media playlists, not sure, depends on what you have.
A search of these forums will show some threads.
I'd clean up vista, you need SP2 or later, and specific error message?
I wonder as you arenot the first with a dell if maybe the OS or included software.
Security programs like Norton and older versions of Kaspersky have been implicated.
Also settings in IE that affect pop-ups and plug-ins.

I'm having problems with install version 11.1.4. If I uninstall and reinstall will I lose all my downloaded music?

Hi, so did I.  It seems to be a huge problem with everyone.  I opened a folder on desktop and called it target.  I copied all my songs into that folder.
I uninstalled Itunes completely.  Rebooted.  Then I installed a fresh install.
I then dragged all the songs back to Itunes and it worked.  I hope that helps.
I read an article the other day and apple is suppose to come out with some genius fix for this problem, it really seems to be global.
    Good luck,
