Will BlackMagic Intensity Card capture straight to ProRes422?
I am getting a Mac Pro with FCStudio2. If I get the Intensity card is the prores422 codec included with FCP?

Yes....as long as you install it into an Intel Mac Pro. It won't on a G5 Quad.
BUT...did you know that FCP 6.0.2 supports HDV conversion to ProRes via firewire? And it works on a G5?

Blackmagic Intensity card questions

Two big questions involving the Blackmagic Intensity card and using it with FCP and an HDV camera:
If you are not shooting tethered to the computer to completely bypass HDV's compression, are there any advantages to capturing using this card? $250 seems like a small price to pay to be able to digitize pre-recorded HDV footage directly to DVCPRO HD, though this leads me to my second question ..
Is it at all possible to log footage and batch capture with this card, or would you need to do the equivilant of a 'capture now' when importing through HDMI? This would obviously be a huge hassle.
For anyone interested, I'm strongly considering the combination of a Brevis35 adapter and a Canon HV20 camera which appears to me to be the cheapest possible interchangeable 35mm lense HDV solution out there.
Love some thoughts and/or advice!

No hdmi devices detected on HD TV with blackmagic intensity card

Im on my Macpro - 2x3 GHz Qaud-Core Intel Xeon with 8GB ram OS 10.5.8
I have installed a Blackmagic Intensity PCI card and using the HMDI connection to my Sony Bravia 21 inch HD TV so i can monitor HD footage for FCP 7 . When i=I go to HDMI setup on the TV I get the message "no hdmi devices detected" with blackmagic intensity card.
Anyone have any ideas or come across this before?

Make sure FCP is running and that you have chosen View menu > External Video > All Frames and the appropriate Blackmagic Intensity preset from the View menu > Video Playback presets.

I cannot make it work at all, is there a way?
On BlackMagic Media Express it works fine, but no luck on Connect... In fact, it did appears an option like "Something" Stream, but doesn't work too.
Any help on making it work?
Or any other suggestion to use a high def camera on Adobe Connect?

You can locate the flash settings dialog by right clicking anywhere inside the meeting room then selecting settings. Then select camera tab (which is the last tab).

BlackMagic Intensity Pro Capture Card & (3) 1TB Internal Hard Drives

Hello,
This is my first time using BM Intensity Pro. Prior to tonight all I used was FW400 & iMovie/iDVD.
I have now upgraded to Final Cut Studio with a BM Intensity Pro Capture Card and Three 1TB Hard Drives (7200 RPM with 32MB cache) - Striped as a RAID set to create ONE 2.7 TB HD for Video Storage.
I have a few questions that I would like some help with.
I would like to capture at the highest video quality possible.
I'm worried that Hard Drives wont be able to handle the capture speed or file size?
I ran the BM Disk Speed Test. I'm just not sure what all these numbers mean?
Can someone please explain to me what the following information is telling me?
Do the results mean that I'm good to go with uncompressed HDV via HDMI?
The first is my OEM Mac Hard Drive. The second is my 3TB RAID set.

I would invest in an external RAID controller.
You can find a variety of such from AMUG in RAID5/6 that will support higher sustained thruput.

True or False? Blackmagic Intensity Card on G5 Quads

Hi: After digging around a bit, several weeks ago I ran across a message board thread that indicated someone had successfully installed Blackmagic's Intesity card on a G5 Quad. The post claimed the Intensity card works G5 Quads, since they are PCIe capable.
However, although the G5 Quad has the newer PCIe slots, I haven't found another thread that claims as much. Can anyone confirm if this is an HDMI input option which is now available for G5/PCIe Macs?

Conecting a SOny PVM-14N6E to my BLACKMAGIC Intensity card???

Tryng to connect the two...the problem is that the Monitor had a ONE BNC input for composite and the card has 3 outs ??????
I am using it with Final Cut Pro...

I have not used my Intensity card with my MAC Pro yet; I only had multiple issues trying to use it with my unsupported PPC G5. Your first question seems like a familiar issue though. As to the second I do know that changing firewire setting on the Sony needs to be done while the firewire cable is disconnected. This may be part of it.

Blackmagic Intensity Pro Card - Best Use With HDV

Hello
Given the choice should I use my Blackmagic Intensity card on my Mac Pro to capture HDV footage via HDMI or YUV Component. Or should I stick to firewire.
The card was initially bought for realtime previewing whilst editing HDV footage in FCP. My plans are to connect the card to a 21" LCD monitor via HDMI connections.
One of the Panasonic reps told me to stick with YUV as it does not compress the footage during the transfer stage as much as firewire?
Is this true?

With all due respect, your Panny rep was on crack.
Capturing over Firewire — whether it's DV or HDV — is a raw-data-stream copy from the tape. It's not actually a video operation at all; the signal is in no way changed. It's just copied from the tape directly into your computer.
Going out of your camera or deck via the component analog ports will give you lower-quality results than transferring over Firewire. Whether you can tell the difference depends on what kind of footage you're capturing.
Another point to keep in mind is that HDV is 1440x1080 with non-square pixels. Capturing it either via HDMI or component analog scales the footage to 1920x1080, introducing some softness in the image. This softness is even worse in the chroma channels, since HDV is only 4:2:0 to begin with. It's better by far to keep your footage in its native format throughout the editing process. If you're going back out to an HD digital master or to an HD tape, you can decide whether to scale to 1920 at that point. If you're shooting on HDV to deliver on SD DVD or over the Internet at less-than-full HD resolution, you're better off staying in 1440x1080 forever, never scaling up to 1920, and just doing a single down-scale at the end.

I have already captured the footage to miniDV tape.
Can the intensity card get the full 1920 x 1080 video ?
I now use Premiere to capture my video and my HDV is in mpeg2 and my SD is in DV type 2 AVI
What format does the intensity card capture at ?
Are there other ways to capture that would make the footage better.
From what I have read allot of people have had problems with these cards.
Im just looking for the best way to get the footage off my camera with the best resolution.

I have posted this before in the PC Buying Guide (post #23 and later), but have a look at this diagram:
The problem is that once recorded to tape, the material is compressed to MPEG and there is no way to get the data back, that were lost during compression. The only thing you achieve is that you lose device control, lose all timecode information, lose all metadata like date and timestamp and exposure data and lose the capability of scene detection. There are no gains to compensate the losses.
Compare it to a glass of orange juice, that was made by heavily compressing oranges. How do you think you can reconstruct the original oranges that the juice came from? Were there 4 large oranges or 6 small ones or a mixture? Were they light colored or were they dark or a mixture of light and dark?
BlackMagic in their marketing may lead you to believe otherwise, but the truth is they can only guess at how many oranges were used, their size and color. It is nothing more than a guess.

Blackmagic Intensity HDMI cards and FCP

I was hoping someone has had a chance to try out or see the new HDMI blackmagic Intensity cards? I have a 1.25 DP G4 and am trying to monitor
my HDV video though a CRT HDTV, but don't have the $ for the more expensive cards (Kona, etc...).
This card is HDMI but less than half the cost. I fear, though that my old
G4 will not accomodate the card. Thanks in advance for your time.

Blackmagic Intensity Pro Question

I am working on simple tradeshow videos... mostly type and stills. They will be played on Blu Ray. I am building the videos in 1080p. Right now I am viewing the work on the Canvas on my 24" single monitor FCP system. Sure would be nice to better see what I'm doing.
I have a 26" 720p Sony TV available. I'm wondering about buying the Blackmagic Intensity Pro to drive the Sony TV for better viewing. Will this work? Will the Intensity card/720p TV display the 1080p image. Is there a better idea without spending a lot more $$?

It will work - HDMI from the intensity card - you will preview the canvas window at 720p. Not sure if this is while though. I mean, you can simply view your canvas full screen on your 24 inch monitor. So you are not gaining much in terms of size and I am sure the Sony will not be better quality than your Apple display.

Blackmagic Intensity 24p Monitoring

I'm looking for a low-cost way to monitor HD and the Blackmagic Intensity card seems almost too good to be true. The thing I can't figure out is how it works with 24p timelines. I know that it doesn't capture or output 24p, but neither does my DV deck and I'm perfectly happy monitoring with pulldown added. If I were editing, say, DVCPro HD at 23.98 fps, would FCP or the Intensity card be able to add realtime pulldown on playback?

That would work fine. DVCPRO HD 23.98 is sent out over a 59.94 signal (you choose DVCPRO HD 8 bit 59.94 in the VIEW>VIDEO PLAYBACK option)...so pulldown is added.

Problem with video capture with Blackmagic Intensity Pro card

I have just installed a blackmagic Intensity Pro card to download analogue VCR tapes to DVD. I have set all the input parameters to the Blackmagic card in both Premiere and the input routine for the card. I am using the breakout cable for NTSC input with the green Y input for the video and the L & R audio inputs. When I try to capture I get snow in the premiere capture window, but it does record the L & R audio. When I stop the tape deck I momentarily get the blue screen with STOP showing and then back to snow. I am hoping it is just a setting somewhere but where????
The computer is running Vista 32 home premium with 3G ram

BlackMagic is offering the Intensity Pro card that they claim is enhancing the quality of video compression for better results than software driven compression, even with Standard DV in addition to HDV, and at a surprisingly cheap cost (less than $300).

7-8 years ago, we said that analog video was at the low end and DV was at the high end.
Uh, DV was NEVER on the high end. Digibeta and Beta were analog, and were HIGHER end than DV. Just because it was digital doesn't mean it was better. DV is compressed 5:1 and has 4:1:1 color sampling. Beta was 4:2:2 and better than DV...and Digibeta was and still is the high end SD format. DVCPRO 50 a close second. No...DV came in on the low end...like HDV comes in on the low end of the HD spectrum.
If this Intensity card does not help to get better compression than software driven compression, is there another card which can do so ?
Well, I answered this, but you must have missed my answer, so I will bold it for you: *THERE IS NO CARD OUT THERE FOR THE MAC THAT WILL AID IN DVD COMPRESSION.* I don't know about the PC side, so I make the statement to include MAC only. There are several hardware solutions for encoding DVDs that distributors use when making the theatrical DVDs like OCEANS 13...but those are separate hardware encoders. And no, again, those encoders are not available on a Mac.
What I mean at the end is to find ways to have higher quality DVDs than when using software such as Compressor. Do you follow me ?
I follow you....you aren't following me. Since I am an editor and not a distributor, I don't know what those solutions are. They exist outside of the editing world, so you have to GOOGLE this or look elsewhere. Needless to say, the Intensity does not aid in this. No capture card does. That is not what they are designed for. They are designed to capture non-firewire formats and to output to non-firewire formats...not to aid in DVD compression.
