Will Canon return to an articulated screen when the G16 is upgraded? The lack of one is infuriating.

I recently returned from leading our annual week-long photo workshop in Umbria (www.GVRphoto.com), and happily found myself using my G12 as my primary shooting and teaching tool. I loved its compactness during long walks through Umbrian hill towns, and the fact that I could work so well with it in manual mode. BUT I also loved its articulated viewing screen for making Hail Mary and low-level shots with precision and ease.
This is something I definitely could NOT do with the new G16 since Canon has foolishly decided to eliminate this feature on this camera (and earlier on the G15) as a way, apparently, to make the camera slightly smaller and lighter, as well as to lower the cost.
As a professional photographer and photgraphy columnist, who in the past raved about the groundbreaking G9, I find this to be false economy and a simply boneheaded move that needlessly eliminates a key feature on a potentially great P&S camera. Here's my take on it: www.TalkingPhotography.com
When, if ever, will Canon come to its senses and restore the articulated viewing screen?

Frank,
I certainly agree with you about the G12. I love mine and have no interest in updating it with any of the new offerings in the G series either. The articulating screen was what sold me on it when I was deciding whether to get the G12 or Nikon's P7100 with longer focal length, bit with only a tilting screen. I don't use the viewfinder much, but when I need it, I really appreciate having it. I agree that larger sensors aren't always needed, unless you do a lot in low light. But the Photoshop Elements software really pulls a lot of detail from the G12 images (I shoot in RAW). I am always amazed at the capability of this camera, and hope that Canon will return to what made the G series so special. Like you, I love the layout of the G12 and the available buttons and dials make this an easy and quick camera to use and enjoy. Shooting in manual is a breeze with all the controls so readily available, yet the newer G16 seems to have moved some of the items back into menus.
I've even been on the lookout for lighty used G12's to get as a backup to mine if and when this one dies on me. The new models seemed really nice at first glance, but actually using them reveals a lack of the same control and feel I'm become accustomed to with the G12. Plus, I am not really happy with the overall image quality of the new G1X II and G7X and the lack of the articulating screen is mind boggling to put it mildly! I'm afraid that too many people subscribe to "smaller is better because I want to carry it in my pocket" theory, so somethings got to give to keep them happy. Hence, my summation that the G7X will replace the G and S series in the future. Too bad, since the G12 is one of the greatest cameras out there in my opinion!

About 30 minutes ago, I was adding some music to the ipod Nano.  Everything was working fine.  Now, the ipod will not turn on at all.  When I connect it to the laptop with the USB, the computer does not even recognize it.  The screen has a fant image of the plug on it and it says connected.  I followed the procedures for disconnecting it when I was finished with it earlier.  Any idea what is going on here???
    Thanks

It probably needs to be reset. The procedure is different for different Nano models: http://www.apple.com/support/ipodnano/assistant/itunes/

I'm sorry your pictures appear different in your gallery sillyymom. I know its frustrating with viewing important images. Are you using a 3rd party picture application? do you have any apps that may be conflicting with your pictures. Have you tried to review your picture settings?

No, it won't revert to the prior OS X but you you may have third party apps installed that were compatible with Lion that may not be compatible with Mountain Lion.

Why does my cellphone keep saying that "estimating time remaining" when I try to upgrade the system?
Is there anyway to fix this situation?

    Hi Eric_Sun,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
You may want to update your iPhone using iTunes on a computer if your device only shows "estimating time remaining" when you try to update wirelessly:
If you can’t update wirelessly, or if you want to update with iTunes, follow these steps:
If you use your device's Personal Hotspot for your computer's Internet connection, update your device wirelessly or connect your computer to another network.
Install the latest version of iTunes on your computer.
Plug in your device to your computer.
    In iTunes, select your device.
In the Summary pane, click Check for Update.
    Click Download and Update.
If you see an error message while updating your device, you can learn how to resolve iOS update errors in iTunes.
You can find these steps here:

I have an iPad and iPhone but am stuck with Tiger and Leopard on my old powerbook G4.  Will I still be able to get my email on my PowerBook after I upgrade to iCloud?  I don't have the cash to upgrade the mac right now.  Just wondering what my email options are.  Thank You.

You will be able to get your mail on the PowerBook. The calendars (iCal) will not sync; any events added to iPad and/or iPhone will not sync with the Mac but will sync with each other (that is: the mobile devices which are on iCloud). My  MacBook Pro (Lion) and iPad2 (iOS5) sync fine; I still get my Mail on iBook G4, MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard) and iMac (Snow Leopard).

I am looking to upgrade to the entire CC suite from the Lightroom/Photoshop package. The packages page says the complete suite is available to existing customers for 29.99 monthly. But when I try to upgrade I only get one option for 599.99 yearly. Can I get clarification on the $29.99 offer and who it is available for. Thank you

    Hi there
The 29.99 introductory offer is for existing CS customers ie customers with a CS3-CS6 product (suite or individual product).
    Hope this clarifies matters.
    Thanks

  • Iphoto 9.5.1 shows mpeg-4 files as a thumbnail, but will only show as a black screen when you double click on it, other video files are able to be played and are viewable.  Why?

iphoto 9.5.1 shows mpeg-4 video files as a thumbnail, but will not play the video.  When try to play video it shows as a black screen.  Other video files play ok- (mpeg, .mov).  What do I have to do to view them?   If I use imovie they will play, but I sometime like to view them in iphoto.  It worked before I upgraded to 9.5.1 and 19.9.2 of the operationg system.

Select the thrumbnail of one of the videos and use the File ➙ Reveal in Finder ➙ Original menu option.  That should take you to the original mpeg4 file.
If it does then try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.

  • Blue Screen when Logging in after Upgrade

Hi, I upgraded to 10.5.5 yesterday and had no problems.
Until today, just a few minutes ago when I started my iMac. A blue screen simply appeared and stayed instead of the login window. I tried out all kinds of keyboard commands but no reaction. Then I clicked the power-button on the back of my iMac and suddenly the login screen appeared, and then suddenly disappeared again as the iMac went into sleep mode.
Then I was able to wake it by clicking the button again, and the login screen was there. So nothing bad happened, but it got me very worried and disappointed. I am used to a lot more stability and perfection from Apple...
Please tell me if there's anything I should know relating to this incident, or if you want to know more.

What I said doesn't in any way say something about my interest. It's how I feel about the new version of Mac, and why I don't have backups. You bet ya I'm still interested in solving Mac issues, because I love Mac. I am constantly helping my friend who has just recently switched from Windows to Mac with technical/usage issues and I wouldn't come here in the first place if I wasn't interested.
But if this glitch doesn't happen to me again, then yes, you're right, I wont be interested in solving this particular mystery anymore, even though I hope Apple stumbles across it sooner or later and fixes it despite its harmlessness. Because if you go too far without noticing ugly, yet small things about the OS, it might turn into an OS with the reliability of a Windows.
However, above all of this, I am quite confident that Leopard, or rather "Snow Leopard" in this case, will bring back the stability and reliability to the Mac that I felt with Tiger.
I've read your signature, but try not to be too short/quick on determining my interest in topics that I start myself
Besides, everyone is in a bad mood at some point in time of the day/week and since pure text can't convey these feelings as an eye-to-eye conversation would, try to cut everyone some slack before coming to conclusions; being supportive is the best you can do when communicating with a person whose state of emotions you just cannot tell through this type of medium!
And in any case, I respect you. Seeing that you have already made thousands of posts in these discussion boards gives me confirmation that you also love Mac and that you also like helping strangers with their computers; that's something I can understand, not only from my past participation in topics here, but also from helping other people with web development on IRC.
Point is that if you felt like I disrespected you, or disrespected your offer to assist me in finding an answer to the original topic of this thread in particular, I didn't mean it. Hel, I appreciate the fact alone that you even wrote a response to my original post, so I hope I made my attitude to this forum and the people here clear.

  • Strange mark on screen when darker colors appear over the area

I just noticed this today. When I view an image with a black screen or darker shades of gray a weird white mark appears in front of the color. I realize this is most likely a problem ON the physical display. Basically, I'm wondering if this can be fixed and if it would be covered under warranty. You can see a picture of it here: http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d19/footballman2399/IMG_0001.jpg

If you are talking about that ghostly, banana-shaped crescent on the right side of the picture you linked, that looks like what happens when there is crush damage to an LCD's light spreader. I have seen that kind of pattern on notebook screens where people have accidentally dropped something on top of the closed lid, or else even accidentally stepped on the closed notebook getting out of bed or under a pile of newspapers or something like that. Or another scenario is putting it in a case and packing it into the trunk of a car and piling heavy things on top of it and taking a trip with the case packed like that.
Is the lid on the MBP dented from above in that area? If it's under warranty and shows no signs of external abuse, you might be able to get the LCD panel replaced by Apple for free under the assumption that it left the factory in that condition, e.g. a manufacturing defect. But more likely than not Apple will claim it is abuse and won't fix it under warranty. But you can always try.
