Will Captivate 3 meet our needs?

I work within a training and development department, and have
been asked to research Captivate 3. We do a variety of training
including soft skills (leadership, communication, presentation
skills, etc.) and some "harder" skills. We want to create online
supplements to our instructor led courses. We rarely train on
systems (e.g., how to use a learning management system, a
time-keeping system, etc). We're Adobe fans, and recently attended
a session on Captivate given by a trainer in a different division.
That individual was using an older version of Captivate, and it was
suggested that if we wanted to do training that focused on
non-system skills, perhaps another Adobe product would do a better
job.
I thought I present my question to the Captivate 3 pros (you
:-) and get your input. If we want to have supplemental training on
topics such as giving presentations, diversity, leadership, etc.,
will Captivate 3 best suit our needs? What specific experiences in
this arena have you had? Are there other Adobe products better
suited to our needs?
Thanks so much,
Ed

Hi Ed,
I'd certainly recommend considering Captivate if you are
developing e-learning materials in which you'd like to include
examples of applications, movies, audio instructions, etc.
However, I think Captivate is a little restrictive if you
want to use your developed materials like you'd use PowerPoint to
develop and show presentations. There are many reasons... The
materials in Captivate do not scale "full screen" (well) without
changing your resolution (PowerPoint tends to handle this nicely).
It is also rather expensive to develop using the tools vs.
something that presumably most people have on their computers
already (PowerPoint). There is a bit of a learning curve with
Captivate (as there is with PowerPoint with some of the more
advanced functions). Adobe does sell an plugin/addon for PowerPoint
(Presenter) that may be nice for you too, though I think it is now
packaged with other software. You can read about it
here.
Captivate presentations also do not work as well with
"remotes" you'd commonly use for presenting. There are some
workarounds with Captivate, but PowerPoint makes this very easy.
My recommendation would be to look at what you are going to
be creating and using the presentations for. It really depends on
what you'll be using them for.
Do a little research - try downloading the demo of Captivate
and see how it works for you...
Good luck,
David

  • Can someone confirm if this will work for our needs?

I downloaded and installed the Acrobat 9 'free 30-day trial' version to confirm whether this software will do what we need for a given requirement before purchasing it but the functions that I need to test are inactive in the trial version.
We need to be able to:
Distribute blank or partially completed forms to external contacts who can open the files without needing to purchase software. (no problem)
External contacts must be able to add attachments or paste screen-shots and photos into the form, fill-in fields and submit the form back to our e-mail address. (not sure)
We must be able to distribute the (partially-completed) returned forms internally for mark-ups and/or approvals and be able to track their progress. (not sure)
Some completed forms will need to be returned to the external contacts, where they must be able to open and print the forms. (I think so)
We need to be able to collect and sort and filter the forms based upon form field inputs. (not sure)
The information in these forms is security-sensitive, so we would like to manage the information locally, not on Adobe.com.
It looks like we can add attachments to the files, but I can not test how it works because this function is disabled for the trial version.
I am also not able to test the sorting/filtering/tracking of forms. I believe this is done using the ‘Distribute’ and ‘Collect’ functions where returned files are ‘collected’ in a master file. The trial version does not allow me to distribute the form, so I can not create the master file to see what it does.
I called customer support to ask about how it works but he would not answer my questions unless we purchase the software.
The descriptions of the software on the website sound like it is possible to do what we need, but I can’t tell for sure, and I don't want to buy it unless all of our requirements can be met somehow.
Can anyone explain to me how this works and let me know if it will do what I need?  Is there another product we should be looking at?

Since no one has given a go at an answer, I will try some. I am surprised that things are grayed out in Acrobat. If you create the form in Designer (the FORMS menu), then you can no longer modify it in Acrobat. That may be one issue you have. The modification can still be done if you do the form in Acrobat using the form tools uner the TOOLS menu.
For your questions: We need to be able to:
Distribute blank or partially completed forms to external contacts who can open the files without needing to purchase software. (no problem)

    1. Yes, that is not an issue.
    2. This is an advanced feature that requires current versions of Reader. At least I think photo clip capability has been added -- you will have to wait for others for a confirmation. The form can be filled in and sent back to you. There are 2 aspects to be aware of. If you submit the form, not just the data, then you are limited by the license agreement in quantity based on seciont 15 of the license (available online at Adobe.com). Also, you mention sensitive data. That would normally eliminate e-mail submission right up front due to the lack of security for sensitive data in e-mail. E-mail submission also has problems on many machines due to the client e-mail configuration. You are best to use a web script for submission of the data only (eliminates the license issue that requires saving the form).
    3. I am not sure of an answer on this one. I think the answer is at least partially yes.
    4. Once you get the form data back, you can import it into the form and save the form with the data for sending it back.
    5. Collecting the data is the best manner for the collection on the web with the capability of adding the data to a database or other manipulation. I think the FDF toolbox can send the data directly to a database.
My answers are not complete, but at least they give you a start on your thoughts. There are many here who are form experts and should have no problem answering the questions, once they have time. Just wait a bit.

  • Will this fit our needs?

We are a local startup hospice in Arizona.
We currently need about 9 Macs networked together. Services that must be supported: file sharing, internet, email, calendar, iChat, and printing.
We are looking at 6 iMac's, 2 MacBook's, 1 Mac Pro, 1 Airport. Does 1 Mac Pro have the ability to handle this load? In the future we would like to add more desktops, how many can a Mac Pro handle by itself? What's the best configuration for the Mac Pro? Is there a better choice for a server than a Mac Pro? Budget is not much of an issue.
    Thanks,
    Michael

You will need to setup Open Directory to use the iCal Server. Your Mac Pro would be the Open Directory master. From what I have read, it is a very good idea to have a 2nd OS X Server to act as an Open Directory backup. I have not used Open Directory yet, but I thought it would be worth mentioning this.

  • I want to upgrade my 2008 Mac pro to the latest one, will it meet the requirement for the future Software that's coming out for the next four years?

I want to upgrade my 2008 Mac pro to the latest one, will it meet the requirement for the future Software that's coming out for the next four years?.

I'd wait. What can't you do that you need? You mean you want to buy a new model, then why not wait for an actual new one, not the two year old 5,1, when you need to and have outgrown.
Yours will run Mountain Lion. yours is 4 yrs old and still supported and has life left.

  • Will Captivate 4 fix my FMR issues, using Flash 10

    Hi,
I currently have Captivate 3 and we recently upgraded to Flash 10. I work in a large organization so I cannot control the Flash version, downgrading to 9 is not an option.
I need to do minor drag and drops of folders (not the window itself, cuase I found a method of doing this using only the keyboard).  But when I hit End to end my recording, captivate freezes.
My question is will Captivate 4 enable me to do these basic drag and drops, using Flash 10?
(I saw the link about the FMR editor, but this is not an option for us)
    Thanks :-)

    Hi Jacksig,
The answer is YES. Adobe captivate will allow you to do your drag and drops with Flash Player 10. Infact that is the least Adobe Captivate could for you...

  • I am looking into Lightroom (Creative Cloud) to allow a Team Member access my Catalog to keyword search which images will work for our Social Media platforms.

I am looking at LR Creative Cloud to allow a Team Member access my catalog so she can keyword search which images will work for our social media campaigns. My catalog has both personal and business images (which are in separate folders), however, I only want them to access the business images. What is the best way to do this?
and a second question as I am new to the Cloud LR product. I am assuming that my images still stay on my external drive...how am I or her able to view these images if I am out of town on another computer?

My catalog has both personal and business images (which are in separate folders), however, I only want them to access the business images. What is the best way to do this?
I think the only way in Lightroom to make this happen is to use two catalogs, one for business and one for personal, and then prevent access to the personal catalog via putting it on a disk or location that your team member does not have access to.
I am assuming that my images still stay on my external drive...how am I or her able to view these images if I am out of town on another computer?
Situations like this require you to put the catalog file AND photos on the external HD and then move the external drive to whatever location and whatever computer is needed. An alternative is to put the photos on a network drive and the catalog file on a local disk and access the catalog locally and the photos via network, but that limits you to using a single computer.
I am looking at LR Creative Cloud to allow a Team Member access my catalog so she can keyword search which images will work for our social media campaigns.
As far as I know, this does not require Creative Cloud, nor does Creative Cloud help in this situation. Furthermore, if you are thinking about a situation where you and your team member have simultaneous access to the catalog(s) of interest, this is not possible in Lightroom. Lightroom is a single user application.
If you are interested in a true multi-use application, where more than one individual can access a catalog at the same time, you might want to look at Daminion. Note: I am not endorsing or recommending Daminion, as I have never used it; I simply point out the that it has the feature being discussed.

  • New to DAQ, need to know if it will do what I need before I spend

I am looking at Labview and a DAQ board for my aplication. Starting from scratch.
I need to make an automated life cycle tester.
    My test routine sequence:
    1) Switch circuit board on (120VAC source)
    2) Square wave (Pic) out at 20hz for 10 seconds (200 pulses)
    3) Switch the circuit board off for 3 seconds
    4) goto 1)
I would like to count the number of cycles completed on my display(1-4 above)
During the cycle I would like to indicate the number of missing output pulses from my square wave at 2 or 3 points and display that number missed.
Later I might like to add a thermistor and drive a heat source to monitor test under extreme temp conditions.
What I'd like to know is if Labview and something like the NI DAQPad-6016 meet my needs to accomplish this?
My needs are pretty modest. Nothing we make is running very fast.
I'd like to drive a relay from the DAC board to power the circuit board.
Evetually I'd like to make some multi-head automated exercisers for my circuit boards for pre-packaging test purposes. I want o monitor voltages in a few key places as well.
Will Labview and DAQ boards get me there?
    Appreciate any help

a digital out will not have the current sink rating to drive a relay directly, unless it is a very special relay, so you need to look at options there, like the use of a solid state relay or a transistor driver for the relay.
Other than that, you can set up those things in MAX, either as tasks or global channels, and call them from LabVIEW, and it should be quick to get going.

  • Will Captivate 7 be added to Creative Cloud?

Been researching into the new Captivate model and it'd be excellent for my business. As CC licence holder it'd be great to have it included in the package.
Anyone know whether this is something that will happen?

I like the subscription price for Captivate because it is an 18month break-even compared to buying the upgrade and you get all of the updates in that time frame.  So for about $20.00USD per month ($240.00USD per year), you get Captivate 7 and all updates as a subscription.  OK so far.  I also use Adobe Connect and that subscription is about $45.00USD per month ($540USD per year).  Now I might use Audition or Photoshop CS6, but upgrades would be nice.  So the Creative Cloud would be one-stop shopping at about $50.00USD per month or $600.00 per year.
The disconnect is that Adobe Captivate is evolving (thank you Adobe for stopping the madness through CS4) and it plugs into Adobe Connect.  But pardon the sad pun here... There is a huge Disconnect in having Captivate as one product, Connect as another and then not having either of those two in the creative cloud.
Modern on-line training includes Group-Live (PowerPoint and software applications live, college instruction, Etc.), Group-Live Internet with tools like Adobe Connect, WebEx, GoToMeeting or GoTo Webinar, Etc. and self-paced learning with tools like Captivate.
But Captivate has evolved from screen capture to include PDF's, video, sound, images, interaction objects, Etc.  But note that the images and video are edited with other tools like Photoshop or Premiere (or the Elements versions of those).  I see a disconnect here where the programs are now in different "islands" that are not connected and require separate purchases.
My ideal solution would be to have ALL of these in the Creative Cloud so that I can perform Group Live Internet training seminars and edit my Captivate projects as needed for one subscription price and with one-stop shopping.
Right now, the three purchases of a Captivate subscription plus Adobe Connect Pro plus the creative cloud to get Photosho, Audition and Premiere are not appealing from a price standpoint.  Integration of these to the Cloud family would be ideal and it would probably help Adobe to grow in the e-learning space.

How do I know if a login site is secure? In Safari or Explorer there is a visual lock icon in the web browser window, but not so in Firefox. Is there an add-on that meets this need?

The padlock only shows that there is a secure connection and doesn't guarantee that you are connected to the right server. So you might still be connected to the wrong server if you make a typo in the URL and someone has claimed that mistyped URL. The functionality of the padlock has been replaced by the Site Identity Button on the left end of the location (address) bar.

This has actually existed since Firefox 3.0

    No.

  • Does this Macbook configuration meet my needs (school/gaming)?

    Hello,
I am considering making the change from PC to Mac just to try out something new and I could use some help deciding if this Macbook configuration would meet my needs.
I am a working student, so I spend most of my time commuting either to and from campus or to and from work. Because of this, I need something that is fairly portable and good for both reading and writing.
I also have an interest in gaming. While I'm by no means a "pro gamer" with an interest in playing only the most demanding games on max settings, I would like to have the flexibility to play some older games I like (Team Fortress 2, Civilization 5, League of Legends) as well as some newer games (Dark Souls 2, Elder Scrolls Online, etc.) without sacrificing too much in terms of performance.
My current configuration looks like this -
13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display
2.8 GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7 (boost up to 3.3 GHz)
    4GB RAM
    128 GB flash storage
whatever GPU comes with the MacBook
While I'm by no means computer illiterate, I only have an amateur understanding of computers and the performance of various hardware.
If this configuration won't meet my needs, can I get any suggestions on what could? I know Macs aren't optimal for gaming. However, I've never owned a Mac and I would like to see how it works out for me.
    Thanks

You're right in saying that MacBook Pros are the best when it comes to gaming. But I don't think, based on your specs, that you're going to have enough RAM to even play some games. And you have to look down the road - while 4GB might work today, it might be a minimum requirement in the years to come. Since you can't replace RAM in a Retina mode, I would order at least 8GB.
And I'm assuming that you'll be using a portable external USB 3.0 drive to augment the 128GB flash storage? That's not a lot of storage space - you'd be best to install the system and application on the 128GB drive and get a larger drive to keep your user files.
My 2¢... upgrade the RAM to 8GB and purchase a USB 3.0 external drive of 1 terabyte or more to store your user files.

To play some games installed from the app store, they ask for our apple ID and password. Will this compromised our appleID and password?

There is no featured tab in my iTunes store. . . and everywhere it shows me signed in. I had downloaded an app for my mother on HER ipad, and that is the only app I have done for her. It shows up on my phone, and now I cannot update any of my apps. I uninstalled that app on my phone, but when I want to update ones I have installed on my phone with my appleid, she keeps showing up.

  • If we switch from Time Warner to AT&T, our e-mail address(es) will also change. How will this affect our use of Firefox? Will we have to re-register?

We intend to rid ourselves of anything TimeWarner. AT&T will probably be our next stop.
If our e-mail addresses change, do we have to re-register with all things "Firefox"?
What changes should we prepare to handle?

If you have e-mail thru Time Warner servers, they may be shut down if you
cancel them. Check with them to be sure.<BR><BR>
If your e-mail changes, you should go to '''every site''' that has your profile and
change the e-mail they have on record.<BR><BR>
While using the e-mail service of a provider is good to have, what happens
when you no longer use that provider? A good thing to do is to check out
and of the '''free e-mail providers''' that are around. With them, you don't have
to worry about keeping a provider just for the mail box.
