Will Compressor 4 give me ProRes 422 LT,HQ,Proxy even if i'm still on FCP 6?

I have fcp6 which means that the only prores option i have for converting dslr footage is prores 422. I know that the other pro res options (IE: HQ,LT,proxy,444) came with fcp7, so im wondering if by downloading compressor 4 only i'll be able to get these options.

Oops cancel that, Compressor 4 doesn't have a preset for Pro Res LT (in the Pro Res Settings Folder) but it does seem that you can make new setting for Pro Res (LT) using "Adding a new Video Codec" (from Compressor 4 Help) - I haven't tested this.  Sorry to have jumped in a bit early on that one.

    I am using Compressor (3.5)to create a MP4 file from a Final Cut Pro 7.0 three min sequence(H 264 Mov converted to ProRes 422) on a 3gb IMAC. When the file finally converts I play the MP4 file in QT and the sound is out of sequence with the video. When I convert to 800kps QT file sound is synched as well as on the timeline. Do I need to use some other type of player to view and hear the video in synch
    Can some explain why that is happening

    Instead of going to Compressor directly from FCP, try exporting a Quicktime movie from FCP, then take that file to Compressor. See if that helps.

  • Browser showing Compressor as Apple ProRes 422.

    I am working with HD clips from a Canon using AVCHD codec so I am wondering why my Browser, Compressor column shows Apple ProRes 422. Keep trying to find something in the manual or online video tutorial but no luck. Does this have something to do with how the Setup was handled and should some settings be changed?

    I wish I could answer your question but I sort of don't understand it. When I open my Log and Transfer window there is no option I can find to select preferences on Transferring. I don't see anything like this in my User Preferences, System Settings, Easy Setup, (this is the only place I can find the Apple ProRes 422 codec) Audio/Video Settings window - Sequence Presets and Capture Presets.
    Could it be I had selected the ProRes 422 in Capture Presets at one time because in the Summary window of Capture Presets states "Use this preset to capture from an HDV device and transcode to Apple ProRes 422." and FCP remembers this every time it deals with this HD information?
    Thank you very much for your help. I have been using FCP ever since V1 came out but even with a three day class and video tutorials I get really lost sometimes.

  • Can ProRes 422 be read by standard iMac Quicktime?

    I'm prepping a drive to give to a producer/director who wants to look at his footage on his iMac.  He has an older version of FCP (not sure which) but he is more or less FCP illiterate.
    I shot the interviews for him in XDCam, which I suspect won't play on an iMac Quicktime without a very specific plug-in ... which would be beyond his skills to find and install.
    The final film will all be done in ProRes 422.
    Will the standard Quicktime Player in a 2 year old iMac be able to handle ProRes 422? ... without having to find and install specific plug-in?

    I'll go look right now.  But is that an easy download that a non-computer old-school director could handle?  He can use a word processor, and I'm sure he's installed some stuff on his computer (I think).
    Mmm.  I wonder if I could download the install file myself, and stick it on his drive for him ... no having to go on the web, no having to figure out anything?

  • Apple prores 422

    Hello,
    I have a question about importing a movie file.
    When I import a 5dm2 Movie in Final cut pro X 10.1 and select that I want to encode it to Apple prores 422  or a proxy file it still imports as a original movie Quiktime -H264.
    I tried all sorts off setting and prefferences but I never succeeded to import the file as a Apple prores 422.
    With compressor it is possible, but then I have to fill in for all movies about 50 what export file I want. Not very practical.
    It must be possible with Final Cut pro X.
    Any help is welcome.

    I am still wondering about one thing.
    When I imprt my 5dmark2 video intoo a nw library then after importing I select ttranscode media I check on
    apple pro res and apple ro res proxy than the encode high quality files goes intoo the library folder called transcoded files.
    Now question is will final cut pro x now automaticly uses these high quality prores files?????
    because I allready asked before the movie info in the project sees the movie as H264.
    sorry if I ask the same question but I am just wondering about this.

  • Why is the image brighter after converting H264 to Apple Prores 422 in Compressor ?

    Very strange situation, keep reading please!
    I am using Compressor to convert H264 1080p footage from a D600, to Apple Prores 422HQ for editing. Normal.
    I am using the default Quicktime Settings named "Apple Prores 422 (HQ)".
    The converted file is a bit brighter than the original... Why is this even possible! I find this a bit problematic because I'm loosing some details in the whites, at a way too early stage for signal alterationt!
    So I tried different other stuff that you will find interesting:
    • changing gamma correction in the codec settings had no effect
    • I can see the change happening already in the Preview window
    • and this is the best one : if I apply a resize, to anything, like 1919 X 1079, or 1280 X 720... then the color change does not occur, even when exported! If I apply a resize to the same size, then the output is brighter again.
    I am proof checking in Quicktime 7 of course, with "FCP compatibility" enabled and disabled.
    I know this is a hot topic and there are many unsolved aberrations like this around this topic, but maybe there is something I don't get ?

  • Does CC 2014 eliminate the need to have Final Cut Pro and/or Compressor installed to access Apple ProRes 422?

    Hello:
    Just today, I was working on a Mac system that does not have any of the applications that I would have expected to need to have installed in order to do more than just decompress movie files compressed with Apple ProRes 422.
    I was expecting to have to install Final Cut Studio 3, Final Cut Pro X, Compressor 4, and/or QuickTime 7 with the QuickTime Pro key; however, none of those applications are installed and I am able to create custom QuickTime Apple Pro Res422 Sequences in Premiere Pro as well as export using Apple ProRes 422.  After Effects and Adobe Media Encoder also show all the Apple ProRes variations.
    Does CC 2014 eliminate the need to have Final Cut Pro and/or Compressor installed to access Apple ProRes 422?  Is it something happening on the OS or QuickTime level that would affect CC or CS6 in the same way?
    I've done a web search, but haven't really come up with anything other than older articles about needing to have FCP installed (and I typically work on systems with Final Cut Studio 3 installed as well as CS6, CC, or CC 2014).  If more detailed information is available, it would be great to be able to read up on it.
    The system is a 21.5-inch iMac running Mac OS X 10.8.5, QuickTime Player 10.2, and Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014 (8.0.0 - I know an update is available for PrPro, but it's not my system to make that change).

    I use ProRes all the time as well, but I have Final Cut Studio on my workstations.
    I had not come across MindPower009's YouTube video.  That explains how ProRes could be showing up without FCP or Compressor.
    So, the answer to my question would be, "No, CC 2014 does not eliminate the need to have Final Cut Pro and/or Compressor installed to access Apple ProRes 422; however, if you are willing to be in violation Apple's terms of use, you can install the ProRes codecs anyway."
    Even though MindPower009's YouTube video comments claim "FREE and LEGAL", it's clear from both the Apple download page and the ProRes codecs installer that Apple expects you to own at least one of their applications.

  • Compressor ProRes 422 (L/T) to FCP

    Howdy!
    I'm taking .mov H.264 files and throwing them into compressor, and on the other end receiving ProRes 422 (L/T) files just perfectly.
    When I put the ProRes footage into a FCP timeline, I still have to render the audio!! Why is this? I actually don't find default settings for Compressor for audio. I just have it set to ProRes 422 (L/T)
    Anyways, the audio associated with these ProRes clips is "AAC, Stereo, 48.000 kHz."
    Is there a way to change these audio settings in Compressor so I don't have any red bars?

    Tom is right. Codecs are shared software system-wide ("Core Video"). If you cannot find the option with any software (such as MPEG Streamclip), you won't find it in Compressor or FCPX either. The Quicktime ProRes codecs is part of the FCP menu > "Download Additional Content" you need to make after install FCPX (or Compressor.) These "pro video" codecs are part of all "ProApp" licenses for video related software from Apple (QT7Pro, Motion, Compressor, Final Cut, etc....) [you can also download them here: http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1396]
    Most articles/tutorials you read by "long time" users are apt to assume the reader has been working with pro-video on Macs since the days of disk installs (like they have). In those days, the installation of those codecs wasn't even really an option (well, it was if you did a custom install - but who *didn't* install all available codecs??), it was automatically installed with the main software. Since the "App Store" venue... things have changed somewhat.

  • How to get MPEG 4 with correct apect ratio from ProRes 422 sequence?

    We are trying to get our web person an MPEG-4 of a mixed format sequence (HD and SD) set at 1080i29.97 ProRes 422. We have used Quicktime Conversion and Compressor in just about every possible setting but the only one that gives us a 16:9 is MPEG-2 which is undesirable. Any suggestions? We are editing in FCP 6.

    In Compressor, in the INSPECTOR, in the GEOMETRY tab, in the DIMENSIONS area, choose CUSTOM 16:9, then type in the first number, and the second will adjust to make sure that your output is 16:9.

  • Can't make a workable custom codec with ProRes 422 (HQ)

    I've only just now found that there is a Support Community for Compressor.  Wish I'd known sooner.
    I see my version of Compressor is 3.5.3.
    I've been on a little saga.
    I started out with the challenge of converting some MP4 files from a Blackberry Playbook into ProRes 422 (HQ) for editing in Final Cut. I used Compressor and the task looked fairly straight forward. I used the ProRes setting in the Compressor, converted my files and imported them into Final Cut. Video was fine but I soon found out that the audio needed rendering every time I put a clip into the Timeline. I went on-line to various chat rooms with this problem. Pretty soon a fellow was telling me that the ProRes 422 (HQ) setting in Compressor had "Audio Pass-through" as default and that this was the cause of my problem. Change it, he said, to "Linear PCM".
    It took me a fair while to figure out that the ProRes setting in Compressor did not allow itself to be modified and that I'd have to create a custom preset if I was to make these changes. I set about to do that. I was able to select "QuickTime Movie" and then in "Video/Settings" choose "ProRes 422 (HQ)", in "Audio", "Linear PCM". This did solve the audio problem. Now files imported into Final Cut did not need rendering. But another problem became evident.
    Whereas the ProRes 422 setting that came with Compressor in its summary page listed: "Width" and "Height" as "(100% of source)", the custom ProRes 422 (HQ) setting I'd just created has "Width" and "Height" as "320" and "240". In short the 19:9 aspect ratio of the original footage was lost. What I got both in the conversion and in Final Cut was a squished SD image.
    I've played like heck with Compressor trying to see if there was some place I could get this custom version of ProRes to correspond to the aspect ratio seen in the Audio Pass-through version that came loaded in Compressor. No luck. All very mysterious.
    My next step was to look to create another custom codec that would have the proper 1280 X 720 ratio. Turns out  "HDV 720p 30fps" does, so now I've been converting to that. Looks fine in Final Cut - proper picture and sound.
    I've been playing around a bit more and see now that I can create a custom setting using "Apple Intermediate Codec". I've tried it and it works too.
    So after all this, my question: Should I be using that codec instead? Or does it really matter what codec I use for editing? Is the only real issue what codec I decide to use to output?
    And while I'm at it: Does anybody have ideas why trying to create a custom setting with ProRes 422 (HQ) does not work - for my purposes at least.
    I must admit this converting codecs is pretty new to me. Hopefully with time this experience will get easier and clearer.

    Setting a Compressor ProRes Custom Setting:
    1) Pick Apple ProRes 422...
    2) Drag the PreRes 422 setting to the Bach Window. You can only make a custom setting from the Batch Window...
    3) Select enable for the audio. Click on setting to make sure it is set right. Uncheck Allow Job Segmenting... Make sure Streaming is set to none*....
    4) Select the Geomenty tab... Pick Custom (16:9):
    5) Click Save As and name your custom setting...
    6) You new custom setting will show up in the Custum folder for later use:
    Another thing you can do is make Droplet of this custom setting. Menu... File... Create Droplet... Save the Droplet into a folder somewhere on your computer.
    A Droplet will start the transcoding automatically. Drag the Droplet onto a video icon and let it do it's job.
    * ProRes doesn't need the Fast Start setting. If this is set it will take almost twice as long to do the encoding. Same with Allow Job Segmenting using Qmaster.
    I did the above on the fly and hope everything is clear for you to understand.

  • Help needed in exporting a ProRes 422 clip out of CS5 AE

    First, I have very limited skills in AE, but I just used it to rescue a scene from a high profile interview.  The subject had taken a sip of water that left a incredibly shiny reflective spot over is mouth and I was able to use the clone tool and paint over the affected frames.  I could probably have used the Motion Tracking tool and a mask...but I've probably learned the hard way. 
    So here's my question...
    This project started in Final Cut Pro.  The footage is 1080p 29.97 ProRes 422.   I duplicated the affected ProRes clip (about one minute) and started an AE project with it.  The clip resides as a layer in the composition.   The clone tool changes that I made are recorded in the Effects tab that is now part of the dropdown menu in the clip.   Although I probably should have done this on an adjustment layer (so it's non-destructive), but will make a note for next time.
    I have reviewed the clip in AE frame by frame and the results appear to be great.
    The question is...how do I get my corrected ProRes clip out of AE so I can use it in Final Cut?   Is the way that I did this did I end up baking in these changes to existing ProRes 422 clip and I don't have to render it, etc.?
    Or do i have to go in to the AE project and toggle something within the composition, highest quality, collapse something...and then possibly do a render output?   I want to end up with how it began...ProRes 422.
    Any detailed advice would be extremely helpful so I can preserve the high quality work I've done in AE!

    Well, I answered my own question.  Rendered out the clip with the lowless animation codec Quicktime movie.  Then used Apple's Compressor to convert it back to ProRes 422.  Brought it back into FCP and it looked great.   You can't tell any repair work has been done on the image.  
    I would have used Adobe's Media Encoder to convert it to ProRes, but from tests I've done previously, and in fact did a thread on it in Premiere's forum about one month ago, the Media encoder tends to slightly soften a ProRes image.  And this is something I've reported back to Adobe...along with a chroma tearing issue as it encodes back to ProRes.  Hopefully there will be a patch to correct this behavior.

  • Media Encoder changes the timecode when converting to Quicktime ProRes 422 (LT)

    After spending the majority of my day searching for a solution to this problem, I am hoping someone here will know how to resolve this issue.
    After encoding several hundred clips of various file types to ProRes 422 LT at 23.976fps in Media Encoder, we discovered that the timecode of the source clips and the LT clips varies significantly when we bring the quicktime clips into FCP 7 or Quicktime 7.  This is also creating issues for the EDL.
    The source clips are XDCamHD, H.264, and .R3D files. We set up a batch in AME with a preset for ProRes (LT) at 23.976. After the batch processes, we import the clips into FCP 7 then export an EDL from the sequence.  The EDL shows timecodes that do not match the source clips.
    The timecode is off by several hours, not just a few frames. If we look at the LT clips in Premiere, the timecode seems to match the source clip. In Final Cut, not even close.
    Any ideas on where to start on this one?
    If we use RedCineX to convert the R3D files, things seem to work. Also, compressor seems to have correct results. We were hoping that media encoder would be the solution as it processes these clips much faster.
    We are looking for a solution that doesn't involve re-transcoding all of the footage.

    I need to put a timecode window burn on the entire movie for a web clip. So I exported a ProRes master as a QuickTime movie using the sequence settings. I then imported that clip and slipped it into a new sequence with identical settings (hereafter called TimeCode burn sequence) and was surprised to see the red render bar across the entire sequence.
    As an experiment, I exported a brief (one minute) clip from the same master sequence. I then slipped that clip into my TimeCode burn sequence and it does not need rendering (it shouldn't).
    I shouldn't have to render the Master clip first, only to have to re-render it once I but the window burn on. The movie is 30 min. long and the file size is 34GB. Is there a file size limit on ProRes HQ clips that don't need rendering? Why don't the shorter clips from the same sequence need rendering. I don't understand this. Very time consuming.
    EDIT: I will probably end up using the Timecode Generator option in Compressor, so please don't suggest this, as I am aware of it. I want to figure out this mystery.

    No, you're absolutely correct to use HQ. Just checking.
    The Red footage is has 4:4:4 subsampling, so HQ's the way to go.
    If you generally use Recompress All Frames on Export then you probably know that it's pointless to render your timeline before an Export, since your Render files won't be accessed. Unless you need to work in that same sequence with the timecode - but, you could just use your exported master for that.
    I know the recompress all frames option is probably overkill for a sequence with only one effect, but I'm also thinking about drive space. With those huge Red files, your render files have to be eating up quite a lot of it.
    So, I'm suggesting that you don't need to render this sequence before exporting. Just export the unrendered sequence with Recompress All Frames. That saves you the space the render files would be taking up.

  • Prores 422 to H264 Mp4 to get the greatest size reduction

    I have a 90 minute ProRes 422 PAL sequence that needs to be delivered as both a SD DVD and an Mp4 for Internet publishing. After exporting the timelin as a Quicktime movie I've used Toast in the past to make a DVD using the best settings and MPEG Streamclip to make an Mp4, the DVD looks okay but has some motion edging artifacts but the mp4 looks good but is very large (1280x720p form 1920x1080i original) it ends up over 1.2Gb. Is there any way to reduce it further with out losing too much quality. I could I suppose accept MPStreamclip's default setting of 50% quality...
    This is on a Mac mini Quad 2.7 with 10Gb of RAM. Compressor seems to just spend hours doing the same things. I have actually had sucess making an Mp4 straight from the timeline but it's a very large file. Is there a better format to use?

    Thanks guys, I've run out of time so I exported as a Quicktime Movie with current settings (Prores422) and I then used QT7 Export to make a Quicktime .mov at the same quality and resolution. That came out at about 27Gb. This is just for a screening with the mixed track and the mixer doesn't like MP4s. I hope his system will replay this large .mov okay... I also used MPEG Streamclip to make a 2Mb/s Mp4 just out of curiosity to see if his system will play that. I take your point about Compressor Michael - no matter what the task it seems incredibly slow, I may use it however to make a DVD for Gallery display of this doco. I use Toast 10 to burn discs because it's quick and easy and seems to produce reasonable DVDs. I suppose Compressor is better?
    One small point, the QT Prores movie straight out of the timeline has a 1.1.1 colour space profile, I used MPEG Stream clip and Log and Transfer to import the original Canon DSLR .mov files, I believed they were transfered at 422, whwrere has the colour space gone? How do I get 422 out for a color frade??
