Will connecting a firewire HDD to 2Wire 2700HGV-2 modem works as a common H

My iMac is now connected WIRELESS to my 2Wire 2700HGV-2 modem/router and my Windows PC is connected WIRED to this modem
I still have 2 unused firewire slots in my modem/router.
If I buy a firewire external HDD and connect to this modem/router, can both my Windows PC & iMac retrieve & saved files to & from this firewire external HDD ?
Or do I need to get the Airport Extreme to do this ?
Thanks

Hi
Thanks to you guys for your help. the main problem was the absence of a net work card. This is now in place and I can make a connection tp the internet via the BT Hub. However, there is still one problem and this is as follows.
Computer A (windows XP) and computer B  (Windows Vista) are connected to a small BT hub home network via ethernet cables.
On computer B (which has been successfully connected to the hub for about 2 years) clicking on network places > " view workgroup computers" shows a map which includes the BThub, it's self (B) and computer A.
If I do the same on computer A, it shows it's self but not the othe computer or the hub. Despite this it works perfectly well accessing the internet.
Because I need to transfer files via this network I need to see the othe computer(S) and open files on them, however, I have spent some time trying to establish the presence of other devices on computer A without success.
I have checked folder permissions are granted and I have tried to view the other devices with the firewall switched off but so far no success.
Suggestions gratefully received.
Regards,
David

  • I replaced an old airport extreme with a new one.  None of my wifi devices will connect - always say incorrect password.  Reinstalled old device, works fine.  Any ideas?

I have a 5 year old airport extreme.  I bought a new one to upgrade for better range.  I connected the new one to the internet with a few problems, but a phone call to my internet provider resolved them.  With an ethernet cable from the new airport extreme to my iMac, I'm connected.  However, none of my wifi devices will connect.  They see the network, but it either says "incorrect password" if I'm trying a new network name and password, or it repeatedly asks me to reenter the password if I use the old ones.  I reinstalled my old airport extreme and everything works fine.  I'm about ready to box up the new one and return it.  Any ideas?

It is extremely difficult to fix these issues.. remotely.
If none of your wifi devices work.. that does sound unusual..
Have another try.. This time deal with the COMPUTER only.. leave everything else turned off.
Unplug the Extreme from the router.. reset it to factory.. do this full setup.
Unplug power from the Extreme.. hold in the reset button.. plug in the extreme to power and keep holding in the reset.. 10sec or so the front led should flash rapidly.. release the reset and wait a couple of min.
Now in the computer does the Airport extreme show up under wifi as new device??
Please make sure IPv6 is set to link local only to go further but it should work no matter what the settings are.
No luck clear out all the old wireless names from the computer.. reboot the computer and try again to scan for new wireless devices.
Hold the reset and try again.. it must appear in the wifi to be setup.
No sign of it the unit is faulty and can be returned.

  • Will connecting an external hard drive through an airport express work?

Using an airport express can an external hard drive be used successfully to store photo files directly to be used with Iphoto?

The only way a network drive format can be relevant is using a virtual disk. Otherwise it is not offering HFS+ or FAT32 or NTFS or anything else.. it is offering a network protocol for file storage. You can of course create a virtual disk space using methods pondini mentions here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/TCQ3.html
I know TM requires HFS+ to work.. and I do have it working on an SMB drive in a NAS.. the NAS has formatted the drives XFS I think or EXT3.. but it will be some linux format.. TM creates the sparsebundle on the disk.. the sparsebundle is a virtual disk which is HFS+ as required..
Whether that is required ofr iphoto I don't have experience with to know. You could well be right.. in which case it explains why iphoto gives so much trouble if people even use TC as a place to store the library.
Nevertheless the NAS itself cannot use HFS+.. the only device that i know of that uses HFS+ for internal format of the disk is Time Capsule. There is no other NAS on the market that uses it because Linux cannot reliably write HFS+.. it can handle HFS. Almost every NAS in existence runs Linux.. again the TC is unusual running NetBSD. Which is probably a requirement so it can run HFS+ on the disk. And so Time Machine can work reliably.

  • After I installed Firefox Beta....My original Firefox and the beta give me a connection error. Neither will connect to any website. Internet Explorer is happily working fine

I have windows xp with service pack 3
My computer is well taken care of - no problem there
I have plenty space and memory available.
The problem happened when I downloaded the new beta version of Firefox

Firefox 6 won't settle down as the next release Firefox 7 is already planned to be released later this month.
You shouldn't be using Firefox 5 because it doesn't have the patch to disable the DigiNotar certificates that was the reason for Firefox 6.0.2.<br />
Using unsupported Firefox versions is at your own risk and makes you vulnerable to attacks.

  • IMac shows firewire hdd as "unknown device"

    Hi,
I have an Iomega firewire hdd, that a few months ago worked fine with my powermac. Now I have an iMac Intel and it shows the firewire as "unknown device". I've tried plugging the firewire hdd into two different iBooks and got the same result.
When the firewire hdd in plugged in, its blue light comes on. But I can't hear the hard drive working (though I can't remember if it made a noise when it was working properly).
Unlike another post that was similar to this, I cannot change the jumpers, as it is a closed unit.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

hmm, sounds as if either the HD has died/ has a loose connector, or the firewire controller had gone kaput, its not that common but can happen, and seing as you have tried it on 2 other Ibooks and still have unknown device that seems to be the case.
I have had an external enclosure that had firewire and it stopped working but when i took the HD out it worked find, just the box died..
as yours is a sealed unit id hope its still under warrenty
Sorry i couldnt be more helpfull

  • No connection with Firewire but will connect and discharge with USB2.0

My 3rd generation 40gb iPod no longer appears on my desktop or iTunes window when connected via firewire. While connected, to 3 different Macs so far, it behaves as if its plugged into the AC adaper- the charging icon appears after a few minutes but will not mount.
However, when connecting with USB 2.0 the iPod mounts fine but it receives NO power, the battery discharges within 5 minutes and shuts off.
I've known about the USB 2.0 problem but never worried about it until, suddenly ( and apparently others are having this problem ) I am no longer able to mount the iPod via firewire.
I've tried resetting in all its various forms including toggeling the hold button and plugging into the AC adapter and I have thoroughly read the trouble shooting pages.
Has Apple "orphaned" firewire? Is the 3rd generation iPod doomed to 5 minute or less connection times? Is this just a glitch that an update will fix?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
    Mirror Doors G4   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

Its not the cable. I have cables and other Macs all over. I've tried the other Macs and different cables plus different cables and diferent dock connectors.
Sorry, I should have mentioned that I already eliminated that possibility.
The firewire problem just started Sep 1, 2006. I'm wondering if the last iPod update that occured the last time I was mounted via firewire initiated the problem. This seems more likely than it might have becuase of other posts complaining of firewire connection problems.
    Thanks for responding though!

  • What firewire will connect 27 inch IMac with Cannon GL2 digital camcorder

What firewire will connect 27 inch IMac with Cannon GL2 digital camcorder?

According to the Canon spec's a > 4 to 9 pin firewire cables is what you will need, provided that you have a slightly older 27" iMac that still has a FireWire 800 port.

  • Protools doesn't want to open a session from external firewire hdd ;/

  • Can't "find" other computer (running 10.4.11) connected via Firewire

I have a new MacBook Pro running OS 10.6.3 and tried to connect it via Firewire to our Mac Mini running OS 10.4.11, but it isn't working. I used to make a firewire network between the Mini and our PB G4 (both were running OS 10.4.11) all the time to transfer files back and forth. Now with the MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, I cannot get the MB Pro to "recognize" or "find" the Mini. The Mini is able to "mount" chosen volumes from the MacBook Pro, so it seems to work in that direction. (Although I have an issue with the Mini's permissions but that's a different issue.)
    What I did:
Two computers connected via FireWire cord.
On the MB Pro (10.6.3), I went to System Preferences -> Network, clicked the padlock icon, entered my password, clicked the + button, from the pop-up menu, chose "FireWire" then clicked "Create."
Then I'm supposed to repeat those steps on the Mini, but OS 10.4.11 doesn't have the same set up. As I remember it, though, I went to the Mini's System Preferences, Network, Network Port Configurations FireWire is check marked "on" and at the top of the list. I go to a finder window sidebar, look at "network" area and find the MacBook Pro and click connect, and follow the instructions.
Mini connects and "sees" the MB Pro.
MB Pro is set up, but doesn't "see" the Mini.
    What do I do?
Please note, the MB Pro has only Firewire 800, not 400, so I have an Adapter which plugs into the Firewire 800 port on the MB Pro, then plugs into the Firewire 400 cord, which is connected to the Mini. Could this be an issue or factor? Seems it wouldn't be since the Mini is able to "find" the MB Pro.

    What am I missing?
As far as I know, the installing software still checks the "Library > Receipts" folder to read a history of which package updates have been installed rather than searching to see if the actual app is installed. Have you deleted the receipt ".pkg" files equal to or newer than the one you currently wish to install. However, remember this approach assumes that any "patches" applied in the ordinary upgrade process will not create a conflict within the embedded QT structure when reinstalling an older version--which may or may not be true here. (I.e., QT is no longer an independent application or software package but rather an integrated part of the operating system.) The safest approach is to re-install an older version of the entire OS and upgrade the system as it was meant to be updated to the level at which you wish to operate.

  • Connecting Printer and HDD to Airport Extreme (windows)

I have gone step by step and the bonjour keeps freezing when I tell it to finish the printer setup. The computer will recognize the printer but will not print. I also tried connecting a usb hdd to the AE and in the utility it shows up but not under my computer. I will say I am pretty dumb when it comes to network drives so a little help would be big!
    Thanks

  • G3 Wallstreet, 10.2.8. Trouble with FireWire HDD.

    Hi!
    I have G3 Wallstreet (233Mhz, 384 MB RAM, 4Gb HDD) witn Jaguar 10.2.8 and PCMCIA-> FireWire adapter.
I try connect my external HDD (external box for 2 HDD with USB, FW400, FW800 + SATA HDD ~600 Gb) to this Mac.
In "About ths mac" I see FireWire adapter, External box and HDD in box.
In "Disk Utils" I see Disk without partition. If I try create partition, "Disk Utils" show progress bar, but nothing happens.
I connect this HDD to Mac mini, create 6 partition (100 Gb/partition) with MacOS Extended FileSystem. And copy some files to first partition - nothing troubles, all work correctly.
After this I connect HDD to WallStreet. In Finder and on the Desktop I see six partititon, but if I can browse this partition - they "unmount" (I can't see this at Finder).
In "Disk Utils" I can see this partition, but if I try Verify partition I see message about B-tree error.
If I create (using Mac mini) partititon bigger than 128Gb (or 256Gb? Sorry, don't remember) Wallstreet's Disk Utils not show they, only HDD.
If I use small (~100Gb) partition in Terminal no error about disk and filesystem. If I use bigger partition I see in Terminal messages about size of partititon.
I want install MacOS 9.2.2 on Wallstreet at evening and test this External HDD.
Have any ideas about my problem?
    Thanks!
    PS Excuse my poor English

    jpl,
I tried new combinations and received new facts:)
    I used my PB G4 (MacOS 10.4.11).
    Step by step:
I connected FW HD to G4.
I created 3 partitions (198Gb/partitions) with MacOS Extended filesystem (journaled), Apple partition map.
I copied some files to 1st partition. One of this files was *.dmg.
I connected FW HD to G3.
G3 showed all 3 partitions in Finder and on Desktop. I used files from 1st partition - I copied all files to internal HD and successfully mounted *.dmg. But I could copy files to this partition. I could unmount this partitions. OS said "... disk in use".
    Disk Utils (G3) showed 3 partitions: ~201Gb, ~201Gb, ~61Gb. It's strange, isn't it?
I connected FW HD to G4 and created 4 partitions (149Gb/partitions) with MacOS Extended filesystem (not journaled), Apple partition map.
I connected FW HD to G3, saw partitions in Finder, but they disappeared in itself. Disk Utils closed in itself with error.
I couldn't unmount partition - "disk in use".
I connected FW HD to G4 an verified partition by Disk Util - "Invalid B-tree node size"
    I rebooted G3.
I connected FW HD to G4 and created 1 partitions (149Gb/partitions) with MacOS Extended filesystem (not journaled), Apple partition map.
I connected FW HD to G3, saw partitions in Finder, but couldn't use this partition - "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code -50)".
I'll use terminal and textedit tomorrow. I'll try all variants and copy/past system logs.
PS: jpl, can you use "Kirill" instead "kirill"? It's my realname:) Tnx!

  • Is there a comprehensive list of compatible cameras to connect via firewire?

is there a comprehensive and up-to-date list of compatible cameras to connect via firewire that will work with FMLE?
    I saw this -http://www.adobe.com/support/documentation/en/flashmediaencoder/FME_DeviceMatrix.pdf
but it's out of date and limited in scope... any more information?
    thanks
    Josh

I'm in the process of trying to get this information for a client. Even with a paid AppleCare agreement, the only answer I'm getting is "look in the forums" and "look on the developer site" (although I have to give credit to the Tier-1 rep who's trying to help me.) The impression I'm getting is that they consider an exact list of header names to be proprietary information for some reason, and are going to great pains to try not to give out the information, but also to not create ill will amongst their customers by explicitly saying "that's proprietary".

  • HT201338 Can I connect a firewire 400 to firewire 800 adapter and then a firewire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter(standard Thunderbolt to firewire adapter) together to digitize video from a miniDV video camcorder?

I have a 10 year Canon MiniDV camcorder that I used to connect via firewire to digitize the data.  Now my IMac only has a Thunderbolt connector and my camcorder uses the older firewire 400 standard.  I would like to digitize the video into my IMac.  How can I do this?

I did a little looking around and found a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter, and then a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter, but no Thunderbolt to Firewire 400. Amazon and Apple stores had the Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 cable and Amazon had the Firewire 400 to 800 adapater.
Wherever you get the cables, ask them if it will work OK with what you want to try and do - if they don't know make sure you can return if there is a problem. I think it will because the Thunderbolt side is so much faster than what the camera can pump out to it. If it were the other way (Thunderbolt device to a Firewire computer I would expect that to fail since the Firewire could never keep up with the data rate of the incoming Thunderbolt device).
Maybe if you have a local Mac user group or a friend with an older mac with a firewire 400 port you could do it this way too?
    Good luck

  • External Firewire HDD causes hangs on my Mac Pro & HDD lag using finder

External Firewire HDD causes hangs on my Mac Pro & HDD lag using finder.
I have an 2008 Mac Pro 8 core 2.66hz, 10GB Mem, ATI HD4870 with 4 internal 1 TB Drives. I have 3 external HDDs (2 USB + 1 FW400). The 2 USB HDDs are for Time Machine and backups.
The external FW HD is a 1TB bootable clone of my Internal 1 TB boot HDD.
I have 2 problems ... somethimes when using finder or opening a folder, copying files, starting or quiting a program, I get the spinning beach ball that seems to hang the Mac.
I power off the external FW HDD and everything starts to work. I get an error about the device going offline, I then power the FW HDD back on and all is good.
It seems the external FW Drive tends to hang the system. It occurs pretty frequently.
    Any recommendations?
The other issue is that when I use finder to go to a folder, I seem to have to wait for all these drive to spin up. You can hear them all start whirring.
is there a way to remove that lag?

If you recently moved to Snow Leopard you might look for new firmware for your external drive. I would also get DiskWarrior and run that on the external and consider programs like Drive Genius. You might also back it up and wipe it and restore the data. After that I'd consider looking at a new external.
Sleeping drives that take time to spin up after waking....I'd like to learn how to stop that myself. Be sure the Energy Saver in System Preferences is set to not put drives to sleep when possible. Even then my drives will go to sleep and I have up to 6 external added at times and they take quite a while to all spin up. I've never found a way to prevent that.
BTW...external USB drives on a MacPro? Really? Even for backup....
