my old computer died on me, so i've now got a new computer... will syncing the phone to the new computer cause me to lose apps, music and contacts?

Unless you included your iTunes library with your computer's backup along with all other important data such as documents and photos, etc. stored on an external drive or some other external media used for backup purposes only, all iTunes content on your iPhone and all photos on your iPhone that was transferred from the computer that died will be erased from your iPhone when transferring any iTunes content and photos from the new computer.

I don't know about MacBook, but when I plug my iphone into my windows HP laptop a message pops up (part of AutoPlay). It asks which action I would like to take. I would open the folder (device) to view files. Then you can locate any or all your photos from your device and manually import them to a file you create on your new computer. In Itunes, do not select sync photos. You are correct, this will import itunes photos back on your iphone. If you do not get an autoplay message, you can locate your device by finding it through your drives (C is for your computer, F is for a DVD -- at least on mine).

How is it done?

1. iTunes prefs > Devices > Prevent .... from syncing automatically
2. iTunes menu > Store > Authorize This Computer
3. iTunes menu > Store > Sign IN
4. Connect phone with iTunes open
5. iTunes menu > File > Devices > Transfer Purchases
6. iTunes menu > File > Devices > Back UP
It's now safe to sync your phone without losing content. However, music/media on you phone obtained from non-iTunes Store sources (i.e. ripped CDs) will not transfer to your computer and will be deleted from the phone when you sync.

The photo sync is one way only - computer to iphone.
Copy them from your backup copy of your computer.
When pics are synced to iphone they are reduced in size/quality. You can e-mail them to yourself, but they will never be of the original quality.

But I cannot sync the music because it will delete all my songs from the phone. iTunes includes an option to transfer content that was purchased from the iTunes Store from an iPod or iPhone, but this is for content that was purchased from the iTunes Store only.
Without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
The iPhone is not designed for or intended to be a backup device.

I have previously transferred music form my ipod to an old laptop, both have since broken or been updated.... so lost the info for the website yamipod...I have had a look to help move everything but for some reason it doesn't work on my computer!! Wrong file and I tried installing two of three recommnded programs (FinalTorrent was one) it still wont let me do it....
I also checked out (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1202) but it doesnt give me the options as shown on screen...
I don't know if I'm being thick (pregnancy brain!!) or not but i really need easy to follow help to save my music on my iphone!

Hi Jules,
You must use iTunes software only for syncing music to your iPhone. Yamipod is a third party iPod manager not supported by iTunes.
Since iTunes is dependent on your internet connection, I doubt that FinalTorrent will work.
Make sure your computer meets the minimum requirements for an iPhone 3GS.

I currently have an HP with Windows Vista. I'm getting a new computer and need to know what will happen when I connect my iPhone to the new computer. Will it sync with the new computer and transfer all the information to the computer? If not is there anything I can do. I won't have access to the old computer anymore.

All the iTunes media content will be deleted from the iPhone. You should copy the iTunes library from the old computer to the new computer (with an external hard drive, DVDs, etc.). Calendar/contacts can be transferred from the phone to the new computer, but you must have at least one new contact and event on the new computer, then you'll be prompted to Merge the data (choose that option).

The iphone is not a backup device. The music sync is one way - computer to iphone. The only exception is itunes purchases. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases.

iMessage is different than Facetime. iMessage will work as long as both phones, or iPads have some type of data connection, it doesn't matter if it's wifi, or 3G.
Facetime, however, will only work on wifi connections, so to use it both phones or iPads would have to be on a wifi connection.

The release of a new product does not necessarily affect existing apps.
It is common for developers to redesign/update their apps when a new version of iOS is released, and this can mean a particular app is no longer compatible with a certain phone if that phone can't run a new enough version of iOS.
When iOS 7 was released, many apps were redesigned for iOS 7 and were only available if you had iOS 7 on your device. This left the iPhone 3GS and older iPhones in the dust, if you will.
The existence of the next iPhone will not necessarily mean existing apps will stop working/be pulled.
