Will DVD Studio Pro 2 work with Quicktime 7.1.2?

Greetings all ~
Recently purchased a secondhand (and legal!) copy of DVD Studio Pro to run on my G4 iMac running OS 10.3.9. The primary purpose is to burn occasional DVDs of short movie files I'm creating which are visually simple, but have surround sound audio imported from Deck.
When I went to install DVDSP2, I moved too fast and took the manual's advice of updating to the latest version of QT - in this case QT 7.1.2. But the key for QT that came with DVDSP2 is, I discovered, for use with QT6. And as I've learned from other threads, QT 7.1.2 appears to be the only version of QT for which Apple has not made available an uninstaller allowing you to revert to an early version of QT.
From those threads, it appears that one answer is to backup and reinstall OS 10.3.9 with its earlier verison of QT. I'd much much much rather avoid this given all the software I'd need to reinstall.
It would be well worth it to me to pay the $30 to upgrade and get a key to QTPro 7.1.2 — if I knew that it would work with DVDSP2. But from another (unanswered) thread, it looks like there may be compatibility issues.
So ...does anyone know definitively whether or not DVDSP2 will run properly with QT7.1.2 on OS 10.3.9?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Gary ~
Many thanks for this quick and helpful response. Unfortunately, that uninstaller doesn't seem to work with QT 7.1.2 ... it says it "will remove QuickTime 7.0.1" and when I try it on 7.1.2, which I now have, it tells me "You cannot install this software on this volume. This disk is dimmed because it does not contain an appropriate version of QuickTime."
Any other thoughts? Is my only option to reinstall 10.3.9 with its earlier version of QuckTime?
Thanks again ...

We are still on FCP6. We never upgraded to 7, and we have just upgraded our iMacs.
FCP6 does not work with the new iMac and we would like to continue using the older version of of FCP.

You should refrain from repeating this suggestion about Rosetta (especially since you have no direct experience with it).  Much has changed since the time of its discussion back in the introduction of Lion days.
The fact of the matter is that Rosetta has no valid function installed into Lion or Mt. Lion and users have reported serious system problems and crashes after further subsequent modifications and System updates.
There are two safe methods to install FCP6 (FCS2) into Lion or Mt. Lion:
    Use Pacifist:

    Use Jeremy Johnstone's Terminal method:

  • Will DVD STUDIO PRO dvd's play on P.C.'s?

Will DVD STUDIO PRO created dvd's play on P.C.'s? If not how can I create projects that will play in DVD players on P.C.'s MAC's and in standard home DVD players?

In my experience (not big productions) all PC playback problems were related with the DVD playback software, and more specifically with customers trying to use Windows Media Player as DVD player.
Have you personnaly saw one of those machines? I mean, have you "see" by yourself a computer that can play comercial pressed DVDs and not your DVD-R discs?
You can ask to a confident customre with such problems to install the free and crossplataform VLC Player to check if he can play your disc using this software.
An after all your authoring/burning workflow can affect your discs, i.e. are you using labels? What brand of media are you using? What burning speed
are you using? . . . and so, and so.
    Hope that helps !

  • Will DVD studio Pro convert Real Media

I have some real media clips and I want to convert them and burn them to DVD. Will DVD studio Pro convert them. IF they will how long will it take for 50 mins of video. Thanks

To convert RealVideo you will need to download a shareware tool named ffmpegX located at http://www.ffmpegx.com
When you venture down this path get your favorite beverage, and make sure you have plenty of time to READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!
On the download page near the bottom you find will instructions and links that will eventually lead you to the libraries you need for RealVideo which have to be downloaded separately.
Once you d/l them, locate your ffmpegX support folder located at:
    systemHD>Library>ApplicationSupport>ffmpegX
    and install the libraries
You will then be able to convert RealVideo using the mencoder to something that's useable in DVDSP or FCP.
I have had extremely good results to date. Basically same old story... garbage in, garbage out. if the RealVideo is good or excellent quality you will get like results!
    Hope this helps! Post back.

  • Will DVD Studio Pro 4 work on dual 1.25 G4?

I need to get a version of DVD Studio Pro to author DVDs but I know it requires 10.4 (or 10.3.9 but you can't buy that) to run. I'm reading all of these horrific posts about how 10.4 is mutilating computers and so forth so I'm a little nervous. I also notice it requires a particular graphics card which I don't think i have. I'm not doing HD so is this card really necessary?
Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

  • Importing Compressed Video into DVD studio Pro: PROBLEM WITH SYNC

    Hello,
This post regards software from Final Cut Studio 3
So, I have made a 2 minute clip in FCP7, exported it, compressed it using compressor, and then opened up dvd studio in order to burn it.
I have made sure the lengths of the audio and video were equal in FCP.
The problem is that when i drag the M2v and AC3 files into the DVD studio pro timeline, The audio is slightly longer than the video track.
I am creating a loop and want to duplicate the tracks within DVD studio to make use of the full dvd....so after i have added the files into the timeline a few times, there is a noticable lag, due to the discrepency between the length of audio and the length of the video.
I have even tried to change the length, under 'duration'in the track menu, but this makes no difference.
    any help much appreciated.
    THanks, Bradley

    Bradley Zero wrote:
The looped clip in question is APPROXIMATELY 2 minutes. Infact, the DVDs are for an art installation, with numerous clips all Approx 2 minutes long, set to loop using dvd studio to around 20 minutes. (snip) However the loop is fine tuned so cutting frames to allow for the different frame rates of Ac3 and M2v is not an option.
So far I have only made a test batch, next time to avoid these problems I will Loop the files within FCP7 before exporting and compressing to avoid frame rate discrepancies. good idea??
I'm not surprised to hear that the clips are for an Art installation. I once helped my partner with multiple looped VHSs for a Degree Show & believe me DVDs make life a whole lot easier!
In conclusion I would recommend that you do a separate sound & vision edit, so to speak. Once you have finished your vision edit, lay down the single (compressed) vision clip on a track in DVD SP. Loop it to taste, and make a pencil note of the number of loops. Go back to FCP & duplicate your original final edit (ie the 'lock down') & loop the sound to match. Play out just the complete soundtrack at the new ~20 minutes and encode the resulting mix to AC3. Add it into DVD SP3. Voila! Really this is no different from making a movie; when the sound is going to be worked on by a whole different set of people from the pictures and both added together when complete.
... is there an alternative sound format to export in that is compatible with dvd studio pro that will sync perfectly in the sequence?
Of course uncompressed .aiffs don't suffer from the frame-based problem and are compatible with DVD SP. However using uncompressed sound is not recommended as this can lead to playback problems - especially with DVD-Rs - because of the high bit-rate.
BTW where is the show? Regards, Stedman.

  • How to export subtitles create in DVD Studio Pro into a Quicktime file?

    Hi,
My film was edited in Final Cut, then exported to DVD Studio Pro to make dvds. Subtitles were added in DVD Studio Pro.
I need now to make a Quicktime file of the film for web streaming and the file still needs to include the subtitles (or the option to make them appear)
but how can I export the subtitles (dvd studio pro type of files) to my Quicktime file, for streaming?
I read that this is possible but how?
    Please help!!
    Thanks!
    Paula

A DVD uses VOBSUB aka. idx/sub format subtitles which are bitmap images. QuickTime itself does not support this format but Perian can sort of allow them to work. However firstly Perian is Mac only, and secondly I would not expect this work in a web-browser. In fact I don't think there is anyway to control subtitles in a web-browser.
If you have the subtitles in a text format, preferably .SRT format, then you may have more options but again I would think you would still have problem in a web-browser.
In general terms, the best utility for adding text subtitles to a QuickTime compatible file is iSubtitle details are available here http://www.bitfield.se/isubtitle/index.html
What would be possible would be to 'burn' permenantly the image of the subtitles in to the video. This means they would always be visisble even in a web-browser but could not be turned off. You would also be limited to a single language. There are several tools that could do this including Handbrake (to convert directly from the DVD), and SubMerge also from Bitfield.
There are some tools for Windows that use OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to convert the bitmap subtitles in to text ones.

  • Video won't play in DVD Studio Pro, works in QT

I cannot get a m2v file to work in DVD studio pro. I compressed to Best Quality 120 min from FCP and opened up the DVD studio file and inserted both the m2v and ac3 files from Compression when it was finished. I can hear the audio but the video is just black. The video plays in the finder and in Quicktime Pro. I saved these two compression files over previous files because I was just updating the video and wanted to use the same DVD studio pro file I had already designed. I am re-compressing as I type this but if it still doesn't work I am at a loss of what to do!

Does the m2v asset preview in DVDSP? If it does you may need to rebuild the track that it's in.

  • DVD Studio Pro - Problem with video size

    Hello all,
I'm having a problem with dvd studio pro.
I have a project that I edited in FCP, then compressed to the default DVD setting in compresser, then imported the video as an asset in DVD studio pro. I'm trying to create a SD dvd, and whenever I simulate the dvd, the video plays with some of the left side cropped out. I have text that is cut off because of it. This has never happened before, and I have checked again and again to make sure its all set on SD. I'm pretty new to fcp studio, i'm teaching myself as I go and this is driving me crazy. I have made a bunch of dvd's prior, and this has never happened, so I have no idea what I did to mess things up.
For all I know, the problem may not even have to do with dvd studio, it may be in compresser. I have also played around with that, to no avail.
    Thanks for the help!
    Thomas

    Thanks Javabob,
That is a way good idea. While trying your suggestion i stumbled upon the problem, I have no idea why i never noticed this before. When i got to the step of importing it as an asset into dvd studio, i clicked on the video track and the inspector box for it showed up, then i noticed it had a display mode drop down menu set on '16:9' pan-scan. I then changed it to 16:9 letter-box and the simulation video fits correctly onto the screen. I don't really understand the reason why pan-scan blew it up like that, but it is fixed now. I still don't recall ever having to do this before, but oh well. I will pay attention to the inspector window for the videos more carefully from now on.
    Thanks for the help Javabob!

  • Will DVD Studio Pro support dual layer media

I have a project that is 1 hour and 46 minutes long. DVD Studio Pro 2 has built the project but it reports that a 4.7 DVD will not hold the build. Other than the Data Meter, is there a way to find out how much the project is over 4.7? What are my options? Is it possible to lower the compression settings to get this to fit without sacrificing too much quality? Does DVD Studio Pro 2 support dual layer burning? Sorry about asking these questions, but I am on my laptop which does not have the program or help/manual and I would like to find out ASAP so I can order dual layer media if that will work.
How sketchy is playback of home burned dual media in ordinary DVD players?

You should be able to get your project on a DVD-5, you would need to adjust your encoding settings and depending on the footage you may not see a big hit (You can build the project to see how far over it actually is)
First if you have not made the audio AC3, do so, will save room
As to the video , take a look here for calculator
    http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm
Usually I tweak a bit lower than the calulator. For instance if it says an average rate of 5.2, set you average to 5, chances are you will not see the differene between 5 and 5.2 and can save you reencoding heartache/headache down the road. Max rates really should not be higher than 7.4 or so - do not set max video rates to 9.636 as shown in the calculator. In theory it works, in practice can cause playback issues.

+R DL works fairly well DVD SP 2 did not support DL burning if I recall correctly, but if you have Toast you can burn from there.

  • Output Audio from DVD Studio Pro works on some DVD's but not others

    Hello All,
Would really appreciate any help here.
My project in final cut pro 6 has audio and it plays fine on the computer as well as the dvd studio pro simulator. I send the final cut pro file to compressor and then to dvdsp to burn. Everything works fine except when I play it in some dvd players I get no sound. I have another dvd player that plays everything with no problem. This is a big problem as I can't determine what kind of player a client has.
Is there something I need to fix in final cut pro, compressor or dvdsp?
Thanks a bunch in advance for any help anyone can provide.
    Please help. Thanks

  • Switch off screen while DVD Studio Pro works

I want to encode a DVD overnight with my iMac G5 but somehow DVD Studio Pro seems to override the energy settings.
Even though the display is set to turn off after 1 minute it doen't... ever...
The great shortcut I have found in this forum Option Apple Eject puts the whole computer in sleep, not just the screen. At least my DVD encoding was stuck at 11% for the hour I tried this.
The script I have found in this forum which sets energy save to 1 minute does not help either, as energy save does not work with DVD Studio Pro...
How can I solve this problem.
    Thanks
    Whodany

a partial fix, however, is to set the program to background encode, then i think you could just leave the program idling overnight with no problems with the power saving, and it should have encoded enouth overnight to make burning nice and quick in the morning

  • How can I cut off part of a movie in DVD Studio Pro  created in Quicktime?

I created a project in iMovie, then exported it to a Quicktime file to import into DVD Studio Pro. Now that I have imported it to DVD Studio Pro, it is too big to burn onto 1 disc. I would like to be able to chop off a few minutes of the movie in DVD Studio Pro, but Im not sure how to do it. I am assuming there is some way to chop off part of a movie in the Track editor - can anyone please help with this?
    Thanks

Yes, you can trim a track, but it is a rudimentary control, and not frame accurate.
I think Hal has oversimplified: the process is frame accurate - it is just that your choice of edit points is limited to 'I frames' only. 'I frames' occur about every 12 frames, or 1/2 second, for a typical PAL mpeg2 video track, and every 15 frames, or 1/2 second, for a typical NTSC mpeg2 video track.

  • Will dvd studio pro solve my disc playback problems?

    Hi folks-
I have to say I love my G5 and the very easy to use iDVD and Imovie apps. However I find that dvds I make will not play in many dvd players. This seems to be a known issue and I have tried various fixes without consistent results. Anyway, what I want to know, if anyone can tell me, is if upgrading to dvd studio pro will solve/help with this at all. As you all know it is very very disappointing to spend many hours and $$ creating a great video only to discover it is unplayable on random dvd players. It is also makes me look stupid, and I don't need any help in that regard.
    Thanks for your attention.

Need more details. Do they freeze and stutter or not do anything at all in these players?
If they freeze and stutter, are you sticking on labels? If so, this is most likely your problems. If they do nothing at all it could be a number of issues such as: bad drive, cheap media, etc.
