Will E72 be upgradeable to Symbian^2

Since Symbian S60 is E.O.L. (end-of-life)  I wonder :
Will Nokia's new E72 be upgradeable to Symbian^2 OS ? Or am i buying legacy stuff when i buy E72 ?
Would be nice if there would be some official statement from Nokia about that.

The E72 Developer Platform is: S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2.
The Operating system is: Symbian OS v9.3
It will be that when its released and most likely when its discontinued.
No Nokia has ever been upgraded through Feature Packs or OS revisions, bugs are updated on the platform, but I'd imagine that new hardware is required or they would have done updates between platforms already.
To be brutally honest, I keep my phones for around 12-18 months depending on how I get on with them or if I see a new one that I like, I don't see any other new platform phone available yet, so it will be 6 months or more before it comes to market anyhow, and by that time I'll be looking for a new phone anyhow.
Shunts...
I will mostly be communicating with a Nokia E72 Zodium Black
Nokia E72-1 with Vr 051.018.207.04 Software

  • Will These Applications Run? (Updating from 10.6.8 to 10.8)

Hi. I have a Mac that is running OSX 10.6.8.
Processor: 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Startup Disk: Macintosh HD
I am going to be getting SimCity on Thursday and when I went through the game specs I had everything except it said I need OSX 10.7.5.  I thought I might as well go and upgrade to 10.8 instead. But I have a few questions.
    1. Will SimCity run at all with 10.6.8 (Ex. Maybe it will have bad FPS)?
    2. If I upgrade to 10.8 will Minecraft, Steam (I have Left 4 Dead 2, Civ 5, Garry's Mod, and Don't Starve), and Google Chrome all work?
    3. Are there some applications that might not work when I upgrade? I have Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.
    4. What do you think I should do? Upgrade to 10.7 or 10.8?
    Thanks in advance.

    1) No. It requires 10.7.5. It will not run on Snow leopard.
    2) Yes.
    3) These applications will all still work. For the most part, applications will work on upgradeed OS X as they are backwards compatible in many regards.
    4) It depends on your system specs. ML uses much more memory than any of its predecessors because it runs of a 64 bit kernel exclusively. The minimum required is 2 GB RAM, but that will not cut it for your purposes. If you have memory limitations,   I would stick with the lion upgrade.

  • New apps for symbian belle

Hi. When will new apps available for symbian belle phones?. We can see that in android phones are flooded with apps.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

There is a huge number of apps for Symbian.
Up to about 2010 it was the leading operating system in smartphones.
What Nokia don't have is the Apple IOS type of well organised app shop. A lot of Symbian app developers sold their apps directly, and a lot have withdrawn the apps from the shop for some bizzare reason. Those in the latter group who don't sell them directly are a problem and you have to google for the .sis file and eventually you will find one that installs.
Both the Nokia app shop and the Apple app shop are 95% useless garbage, however, and that will always be the case for smartphones because there are loads of app developers who think they are going to get rich by writing some near-useless app and selling a million of them for €0.50 each.
"Symbian is in the late stages of it's "death" now"
That's interesting. Can you post the date my phone is going to stop working? With 26,746 posts you are probably well connected and know the exact date.

  • SMP3.0 Kapsel support for SOAP and REST services(not ODATA) and Symbian platfrom

    Dear Experts,
Can we develop apps using Kapsel on SOAP and REST services?
As phonegap supports Symbian platform, will Kapsel apps work on Symbian???
    Regards
    Srini
    7730801444

I think you should reconsidering the Phonegap supports Symbian part.
As Phonegap is based upon Cordova, PG basically supports what Cordova supports. Cordova dropped Symbian a while ago. The latest release does not support Symbian: Apache Cordova
The Platform section does not mention Symbian, but does some "exotic" ones like WebOS, Tizen, FirefoxOS.
Same for PG: PhoneGap API Documentation -> no Symbian
Sure, PG 2.x listed Symbian, but 2.x is based on another architecture than PG 3 and Cordova 3. As Kapsel is a set of SAP plugins for Cordova 3, Kapsel needs Cordova 3.
As long as Symbian is not in the list of platform Cordova runs on, there won't be Kapsel for Symbian.

  • Skype for Symbian Belle

    Hello.
I'm wondering if skype will be ever available for Symbian Belle. If I'm visiting m.skype.com, it says "Skype isn't available for your device". They say also that they'r working hardlly every day to add new devices, but it seems like they do nothing to add Symbian Belle. I had some version of skype that was "available" for Belle, but it was wery unsable, so it's better to use nothing instead of that version. So can't Nokia do anything about it? Or does anybody know if  Skype will be available for Belle?

  • Scandisk for Symbian

Do we have a scandisk / fsck utility for Symbian?
Just for the E: drive and the memory card will do.
Google does not seem to find anything useful.
I went through a bit of trouble on my N8-00 with an mp3 file and a picture that got crosslinked on the memory card - symptoms were stutters and hesitation and a slightly higher standby power consumption - but apart from that, no indication from the phone that anything were wrong.
Windows 7 were unable to do anything about the error (said it did, but didn't!), with the memory card in a card reader, so I ended up formatting the card in the phone and copy the content back. All is well, but I would like to save a few hours of trivial work if it ever happens again.

I'm not sure what you're asking about/for, but the N96-1 is a rather old model, and has not been manufactured or received any firmware updates for a long time (2-3 years, or so).
Otherwise, the N96-1 is  bit of an "odd duck" even among the S60/Symbian based phone models by Nokia, as it is using a different, limited processor (so some software will not run on it, that will run on other S60/Symbian device based on the same S60/Symbian versions).
As it is an old, no longer really supported device, with limited hardware capabilities, was never a big seller, and the development tools are also "archived" by Nokia, it probably is not of interest for any application developers these days.

  • Symbian shutting down?

ok whats the deal with symbian shutting down its website, are they about to fold up?  if so, whats going to happen with all the nokia symbian phones and support for them and also o/s upgrades and app development???
is it worth buying n8? c7? or even e7??
or should we just wait n see what meego has to offer?

Nokia have changed the way symbian works because basically the symbian foundation method wasn't working the way nokia needed it to.
Instead of having other companies involved in the development (samsung and sony ericsson were members for example) Nokia has taken direct control in an effort to speed up development. As part of taking direct control they have closed the symbian foundation as we know it making symbian a Nokia product.  I believe other manufacturers will be able to use symbian if they license it (it's quite popular in Japan on non-nokia hardware).
This is actually a good thing for Nokia customers as it means that we should see updates far quicker than ever before. They don't have to wait for other parties to agree on features any more so they'll be able to pass new ones on quicker.
The N8, C7, E7 & C6-01 will be the first models to see the benefits of theis new way of working with major updates due early next near that should significantly improve the user experience.

  • New Symbian OS compatibility with s60v3 existing p...

    Hello everyone!
Coupple of minutes ago I red about new Symbian Foundation OS.
It was mentioned that new OS will be compatible with existing Symbian phones.
Does someone knows it will be possible to use our nowadays phones, for instance E90, E75, N96 with new OS? Can we upgrade it with the new OS?
    Thanks in advance!
    Best regards.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It is highly unlikely that S60v3FP1 and FP2 phones will get the new OS.
Various rumours suggest that newer S60v5 phones may get the new OS, but no exact details are known.
It more likely that the only models that will get the new OS are those that have yet to be announced.
All you can do is wait until more details are released to the public from nokia and symbian and hope that the news is good.

  • Will re-setting my Iphone make me loose all my pictures and apps

Will re-setting my husbands i-phone make it loose all the pictures and apps ? Also on my husbands phone he has an old email address that is no longer active and cannot access the email account to get the reset password when apple emails it. Does re-setting the i-phone enable him to change his apple id and password ?

Then tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. This will clear everything in settings of the prior user so he can set it up as a "new" user. No apps are deleted nor is iOS. However, apps you have purchased under your Apple ID will not be upgradeable under his Apple ID. They will continue to work, however. If you have your own separate device, then each of you needs a separate Apple ID or you will be getting each other's mail, iCloud syncs, etc. If you use the same computer you should each have your own separate user account.

  • Symbian 9.5

Recently Symbian 9.5 has been released. Our N95 running with the Symbian 9.2. There are lots of improvements within the Symbian 9.5. I would like to know it will be update to the Symbian 9.5 by the future release of the firmware.

I am so disappointed with that massage , because Symbian 9.5 got the solutions for the present problems of the high end phones like N95. We all know power consumption of the n95 is too high, so we can’t keeps our phone live with out recharging more than two days. There are many improvements with considering Symbian 9.2. They says Symbian 9.5 CPU and RAM usage is much more lower than other Symbian OSs, so updating to Symbian 9.5 it is possible to make our phone faster and improve the response time without changing our hardware. I just pointed few things only, there are lots of improvements in Symbian 9.5.

  • In Praise of the N97

Just for a change can i praise the N97 while I understand some users frustrations can I just add this is not every N97 user. I have owned many phones and gadgets over the years from N70,N80,N95 Iphones Archos and Ipods
and to be honest I think the N97 is the best yet
Things i'm loving most about the N97
1.The memory 32gb = lots of movies and music makling it a one gadget in your pocket
by the way if you use dvdvideosoft video to ipod convertor on the ipod highest quality setting it gives great video files supported by N97 and its freeware
2.the radio transmitter fab with the ipod and iphone this you have to pay extra for
    3.the internet access is great
    4.iplayer with download
only bug on this is sometimes the download option isnt there
but ive found if you restart the phone the next time it is
5.camera is good as it was on the N95 its down to the lens not the MP
    6.widget options are good
    My wishlist for the N97
1.coverflow or something like it for the music player
2.N gage games I believe this is happening in september
3.The picture gallery to be fixed as for some reason the download picture
file only updates when phone restarted and for some reason you cant delete from this file via the phone
    only from mass storage
overall though am a very happy N97 user like all technology sometimes you have to learn to work withthe nuances and behaviours of a device compared to my early experiences with a spv its a breeze

Me too, me too!! And so you don't think I'm a teenage geek jumping up and down in excitement, I'm a geek in her 50s jumping up and down with excitement.
I've just been having coffee with a friend who was given an iPhone by his employer as a work phone. He doesn't like it much at all. One of the problems he finds is the mute button is often activated by his ear – I thought that was amusing! On the other hand, my daughter and her husband like their iPhones – but they also have a house full of Apple computers!
I love my N97 – I did a lot of research and weighed up three phones – the HTC Touch Pro 2 (I know someone who has got rid of his already and swapped to the N97), waiting for the Samsung Omnia i8000 or the N97. While the iPhone is perfect for many, many people it was never an option for me. Capacitive screen too restrictive, no multi-tasking, no FM radio, low grade camera, no flash, no personalisation to speak of. Above all else a phone has to fit the needs of the user and I was very clear on my needs.
I've not had mine for 2 weeks or anything, but I love it. The keyboard is perfect for a mobile phone (we use phone keyboards differently to PC keyboards), the touch screen is extremely accurate, it feels good to hold (as in comfortable), was dead easy to upgrade and personalise, and I've had no bugs. Call quality is excellent, my daughter's description was "just like a landline, maybe even better". The speakers (for music) are not 7.1 digital sourround sound, but this isn't a stereo system, it is a phone - and the quality can be improved by fiddling with the equaliser.
Now I just need to send Nokia my invoice for the advertising spiel, but I am really happy with it.
I've had a few Nokias, so I suppose I am used to the Nokia world, therefore easier for me to adapt.
Thinks I'd like to see: Fancier transitions, but I'm hopeful we will get the upgrade to Symbian 2 which looks great - a litle worried about the RAM required for Sym 2, but we shall see - they say we are compatible.
More useful apps - but that will come in time as developers get stuff happening.
A few odds and ends, mostly usability that I posted on the thread about the next release of firmware - some I've already found apps for, like auto-scheduling the profile changes. I'd like to see the virtual qwerty keyboard as was in early videos - handy for a quick SMS. Abiliy to edit contact detail labels (not sure where that disappeared to, was on my old phone).
Like fowler1969, I'm very happy I went with this phone.
I will say this: I have noticed quite a few posts here and in other forums where the "issues" were not phone issues, they were user issues. This is not a phone for someone who isn't a little technically literate. The phone can be highly personalised, therefore the user needs to know at least a little about the basic concepts of smartphones and computer technology generally. If a person doesn't know the difference between the C: drive and the E: drive, or understand that an internet connection is needed to get email, then possibly this is not the right phone. Don't buy this phone because you want the lastest and fanciest - but it because it fits YOUR particular needs.
Clearly some people have had some issues, but I do believe these are the exception rather than the rule.
I agree Nokia didn't test the firmware it was shipped with well enough before release.
